Are you ready for some football? I expect the coronavirus to return this fall (if it ever goes away) and the fall football season to be either cancelled or played as Made For TV spectacles in empty stadiums.
The second most dangerous play in football is leaving your QB unprotected on the blind side. The most dangerous play is getting between the owners and their money. Bet on empty stadiums. Play ball!

That kind of thing is stupid.
The common cold and the flu CAN do many things to many people who are immunosuppressed or otherwise compromised.
Covid CAN do many things. Is it? And if it is how often?
I hate to go all Fauci here but this is the kind of the sky is falling sensationalism every crisis breeds that may or may not have much credibility and that prompts panic and irrational decisions.
How about some facts rather than conjectures?
Posted by: Ignatz Ratzkiwatzki | March 21, 2020 at 02:22 PM
I think Fauci should do all the double blind test he wants, with anyone who volunteers.
In the meantime, we should be pushing the drugs to the front lines, exploit the “compassionate care”, and let it rip.
It will become clear quickly if there is measurable benefit.
In the meantime, figure out what it takes to ramp up production.
Posted by: Buckeye | March 21, 2020 at 02:22 PM
Welp,
My county finally got its first case.
This is why I think a statewide hunker down approach is stupid.
All sorts of people from my little county go down to Sacramento county to shop at Costco and that is perfectly fine under the rules because shopping for supplies and groceries is of course not banned.
That seems to me a very good way to spread the bug from infected places to non infected.
Tell people to hunker down in their counties not their houses and you put up a better barrier to keep it from spreading.

I have a question.
We will run out of bar soap here soon. Does dishwashing liquid (in this case, Palmolive) work as well for hand-washing? I happened to stock up on that when Kroger had a great sale a couple of weeks ago.
Also, since I can't wash dishes in boiling water like if I had a dishwasher, does adding 1/4 cup of chlorine bleach to the dish liquid help?

hot water and dishwashing liquid works. i have a 3 quart bowl with clean water and 1/2 teaspoon of bleach for rinsing hands 3 times per day...nooks and crannies that soaping can miss. hydro peroxide works too.
we wash dishes by hand with a hot sink rinse. 1/2 teaspoon of bleach in the rinse. rubber gloves if your skin is sensitive. learned about it in high school doing restaurant dishes. no room for bacteria back then when health departments actually inspected eateries.

Why six days from today? The draft paper was from the 17th. People have been talking about the drugs for days, and surely some have been trying it. From the paper, infected people started showing signs of no virus after 1 day on the drugs, so there's at least 3 more days of data out there somewhere.
I'm guessing that China has been trying it, and if they had positive results they would have ridden to the rescue with the data. Seems like a bad omen that this hasn't happened, although maybe they're just waiting to place some stock trades first.

A first grade teacher was having trouble with one of her students. One day she asked Johnny what his problem was he replied, “I’m too smart for the first grade, my sister is in the third grade and I’m smarter than her too.”
The teacher took him to the principal’s office and explained the situation to the principal. The principal told her that he would give Johnny a test, and if he failed to answer one question he would have to go back to the first grade and be quiet. The teacher and Johnny both agreed.
Principal: “What is 3 x 3?”
Johnny: “9.”
Principal: “6 x 6?”
Johnny: “36.”
And so it went on like this, the principal asked him every question a third grader should know. Finally after about an hour he told the teacher “I see no reason Johnny can’t go to the third grade, he answered all of my questions right.”
The teacher asked if she could ask him some questions. The principal and Johnny agree.
Teacher: “What does a cow have 4 of that I only have 2 of?”
Johnny: “Legs”
Teacher: “What do you have in your pants that I don’t have?”
The principal gasps but before he can stop him from answering Johnny says, “Pockets.”
Teacher: “What does a dog do that a man steps into?”
Johnny: “Pants.”
Teacher: “What starts with F and ends with K and means a lot of excitement?”
Johnny: “Firetruck.”
The principal breaths a big sigh of relief and says “Put Johnny in the fifth grade, I got the last 4 questions wrong myself.”

Here on the south side of Indianapolis, public swimming pools would be closed when an epidemic appeared. Those were the years when my mom llet us fill a wading pool out in the yard or run through the sprinkler. (Summers in Indiana with no air conditioning were pretty brutal.)
That is why they lined us all up for polio vaccinations when it was introduced. And I think that it was paid for by the government (state, federal, or school system, I don't know).

Ok, this is long, and we’re all tired of reading about it, but this is the best thing I’ve read about the Chinese virus: lots of data, sound reasoning, and most important, he seems to agree with me. :)
A couple of excerpts:
Local governments and politicians are inflicting massive harm and disruption with little evidence to support their draconian edicts. Every local government is in a mimetic race to one-up each other in authoritarian city ordinances to show us who has more “abundance of caution”. Politicians are competing, not on more evidence or more COVID-19 cures but more caution.
On closing schools:
Closing schools is counterproductive.... Based on transmission evidence children are more likely to catch COVID-19 in the home than at school. As well, they are more likely to expose older vulnerable adults as multi-generational homes are more common.
Lots more here, read the whole thing. Seriously.
