Are you ready for some football? I expect the coronavirus to return this fall (if it ever goes away) and the fall football season to be either cancelled or played as Made For TV spectacles in empty stadiums.
The second most dangerous play in football is leaving your QB unprotected on the blind side. The most dangerous play is getting between the owners and their money. Bet on empty stadiums. Play ball!
The article details that the Chinese government is using people's cell phones to control them, and that part of their strategy is making sure that every phone is connected to its true owner, and that there are no underground or untraceable phones. It also details how the government is taking advantage of the virus to crack down even further.
My guess is that this was 21 million phones that Big Brother couldn't watch through, and that they are now gone.

They've already got the rest of the planet pissed off at them but instead of contrition they triple down by not just doubling down on ignoring their cover-up early on and presenting themselves as saviors but now antagonizing the one country that can hurt them most severely by trying to lay their guilt on us.
Population of world = 7.8 billion.
Population of china = 1.4 billion.
6.4 billion vs 1.4 billion doesn't work too well for them.

Worldometers look see
Total US cases 34,755, an increase of 7,877, for a rate of change of 29.3%.
Obviously the number of new cases each day are still growing larger each day, but the rate of change is slowing.
3/17 +39%
3/18 +45.6%
3/19 +50%
3/20 + 38%
3/21 +35%
3/22 +29.3%
I don't know whether to be hopeful as the rate of change decreases. One thing I noticed from the press conference is that there is still a back-log of tests without results yet. The order to prioritize testing for in-patients and health care workers is interesting. Obviously we want to protect the latter quickly, but the former suggests that some new cases will have already have been hospitalized and receiving treatment.

Viral shedding in coronavirus patients takes longer than thought
Researchers say median duration for expulsion in survivors required 20 days
A newly published paper identifies the risk factors and clinical course of patients who died from Covid-19 and suggests for the first time that surviving patients take far longer to shed the virus than expected.
The paper, produced by a team led by China-Japan Friendship Hospital Vice President Cao Bin and published on March 9 by the prestigious medical journal The Lancet, is the first research focusing on fatal cases of coronavirus disease. It may provide important clinical guidelines to help doctors anticipate mild patients turning into severe cases, Cao said.
Cao was part of the first expert panel dispatched by the National Health Commission to the city of Wuhan on Dec. 31 to investigate the outbreak. He is also in charge of clinical trials using Gilead Sciences' remdesivir to treat Covid-19 patients in China.
The study of 191 patients, of whom 54 died before Jan. 31, found increasing probability of death associated with older age, higher organ failure and higher d-dimer, an indicator that may signal a significant blood clot.
The paper also found that the median duration of viral shedding was 20 days in survivors, but the virus was detectable until death in non-survivors. The longest observed duration of viral shedding in survivors was 37 days, and the shortest was eight days.
Viral shedding refers to the expulsion and release of virus progeny following successful reproduction during a host-cell infection. Once replication has been completed and the host cell is exhausted of all resources in making viral progeny, the viruses may begin to leave the host.
The level and duration of virus replication are important factors in assessing transmission risk and to guide decision-making in treatment and quarantine, the paper says. In an interview with The Lancet, Cao said the median duration of 20 days completely overturns previous assumptions on the detoxification time for acute respiratory virus infection. Longer viral shedding also means longer treatment and quarantine times, he said.
Antiviral drugs seem to have little effect in shortening the viral shedding period, the study suggested. Among the 29 patients who received lopinavir/ritonavir, a medication for the treatment and prevention of HIV/AIDS, the median duration of viral shedding was 22 days.
Cao noted that these patients started the medication late. The median time from their illness to initiation of antiviral treatment was 14 days. This means Covid-19 patients may need stronger, earlier antiviral treatment. A combination of two or more kinds of antiviral drugs might be needed, (more)

narciso,
Most of the reports on Syria are focused on the northwest where the fighting and refugee flows occurred.
I think the generalized fears in Syria are related to the Iranian-backed militias in the area. These guys get shifted around the country.
There was a report of about a hundred of them traveling from Damascus via bus to al-Bukamal a day or two ago. And they probably flow in the other direction too.
These guys are fighting two battles - the one in the northwest where a new truce is in place and in the southeast where ISIS is reasserting itself.
The SDF have reportedly been closing crossing points into Iraq and the SAA controlled Syrian territory.

Why is Cuomo being lauded?
He is doing daily press conferences packed with information and little personal anecdotes that are making the soccer mom set swoon. All the lefties around here who hate him for being too centrist (I know, I know) love him right now for his "leadership" in a crisis. Even my husband, who hates all politicians, is impressed. I do hope that my marriage will survive the current political state. Generally, we don't talk politics to keep the peace, but it's all you can talk about when the politicians go authoritarian.
Good morning. I apologize for not being responsive, but I've tried to stay offline to set a better example for the 13 year old.

And just for a test of the kind of comments coming to me privately:
She’s kind of obnoxious, but I’m thinking of relocating to Taiwan for 2 years so S&D and I can have guaranteed (really good) health care for the rest of our lives. Also? Any American who still thinks outsourcing our manufacturing capacity to Asia is a good trade off needs their head checked. (I feel more strongly - that Americans who ever thought this are ignorant at best, and probably outright mentally deficient, but that’s perhaps b/c I’ve not been ignorant about what happens in Asia since I was 8 or 9. So I’m biased.)
I responded with "Ummmm, not to rain on your parade, but you do know that this is why Trump is president now? Trade specifically. MAGA was about bringing industry back to the US, and I never understood why people refused to see this. If they had after he was elected, the political landscape would now be quite different."
Let's see what she says next.

And just in case you don't think the business about Cuomo is accurate:
https://www.nysun.com/editorials/what-about-andrew-cuomo/91058/
Vice President Biden is due Monday to begin giving briefings on the coronavirus crisis so as to appear like a shadow president. There’s just one problem. Sleepy Joe, as President Trump likes to call him, has been upstaged by none other than Andrew Cuomo. It seems the doughty Democratic governor of New York has emerged as a star, while Mr. Biden is still getting a studio set up in his home.
Maybe Mr. Cuomo is the one whom the Democrats should run against Mr. Trump. He has been out there every day of late with detailed updates, wise asides, references to his time in Washington, and commentary on the Constitution. He’s proving he can work with a Republican president. No less a sage than Bob McManus of the New York Post is likening him to Mayor Giuliani after 9/11.
Mr. Cuomo has easily taken command of the war against the coronavirus in the Empire State. He’s eclipsed Mayor de Blasio of New York City. “De Blasio Scares, Cuomo Soothes,” is the headline the Wall Street Journal put over an editorial that began “Thank you, Andrew Cuomo.” It praised the governor’s move to block Mr. de Blasio’s calls for New Yorkers to shelter at home. Mr. Cuomo then issued stay-at-home rules — on his terms.
Bob McManus is no fan of the governor, but even he is seeing the leadership aura emerge. Cuomo is definitely taking advantage of a crisis.

I'd rather we relax those orders, but if they're in effect, best to try to keep the economy afloat temporarily. It won't work if those goes on a lot longer.

Cuomo is also letting his inner fascist show. He went from one day saying that there was "no way" he'd quarantine the state, to the next day issuing his statewide "shelter-in-place" order. When the curve eventually bends (as it would have soon enough even without his destruction of the economy), he will accept full credit.

Anyone thinking of going to China for vacation any time soon.
Effin' idiots will destroy their own economy.
Commie is as commie does.

GUS,
My new policy is to avoid buying ANYTHING from China unless it is absolutely necessary. That goes for toys, dishes glassware, clothing, you name it.

Republicans and Democrats are at this hour still battling over the 1.6T coronavirus bill..
Bullshit, Greta. Senate Repubs and Dems were already working on it together and it was ready to go until Pelosi swooped in and gave the Dems their orders to kill it.

I can't believe anyone would close liquor stores at a time like this.
I'm starting to suspect my corner liquor store owners are closet Trump supporters from what they've been saying.

Looks like the markets aren't too rattled. Dow down 300 (1.6%), NASDAQ down 0.5%.

Teaching Hospital in Marseille announces that it will prescribe hydrochloroquine to all covid+ patients, on the basis of "latest medical data." Release cites "Hippocratic oath", calling it "immoral" not to similarly treat all patients.
Exactly what I said several days ago and got no reaction. Fuck this shit about double blind testing. Let’s give your granny the short straw, asshole.

Kind of amazing that Xi allows his foreign minister to tweet absurd conspiracy theories. He must figure he's stronger than Trump because he doesn't have to worry about elections. I'd bet he ends up taking it in the neck, at least metaphorically and hopefully literally.

Fed action turned it around some. Was down 800 (limit down?) last night.

A picture worth 1,000 words ~
One of the south runway and some taxiways in Atlanta are closed so they can park airplanes... Imagine over a two mile runway wingtip to wingtip of parked planes.... 😢

jimmyk, was it you who asked about the globalization article in thenewneo? I kept meaning to tell you that I don't think globalization will become a casualty. I don't like to be a pessimist, hopefully I'm just being realistic, but the interconnectedness (is that a word? :) of world economies has gone too far to change. But, it all depends on Trump and getting back the house.
Here's one comment from over there that reflects what I'm thinking, think the guy's name is Ciscero:
"Note that an official organ of the CCP last week threatened the possibility of withholding delivery to the USA of the 90% (yes!) of ALL the antibiotics we use. Generics all, I expect. We like cheap; Big Pharma costs too doggone much.
"The CCP totalitarian governance model is of course adopted by Democratic governors who have declared their states Wuhan equivalents… CA, NY, CT, NJ; and DeBlasio is not to be left out.
"If Trump loses in November, the Senate will surely fall with him, the House will stay Democratic, and then America is undone forever. Guaranteed."

Bloomberg staffers: Dude. You promised us jobs and benefits till Nov no matter what.
BBerg: Discard unwanted detritus.

“Think about the potential of someone getting hospitalized on April 1, without coverage, fighting for their life and now being strapped with massive medical debt,” said a staffer in headquarters who fears they were exposed and shared the email with POLITICO. “The campaign's refusal to extend health care benefits is unconscionable and putting people at grave risk. This is not how you treat people who sacrificed a lot to work for you.

The Federal Reserve steps up with massive stimulus and fresh ideas. The news has turned equity futures dramatically and yet the folks in Washington DC are dragging their heels.
This is huge and goes to what I have said about the fallacy of limited arrows in their quiver.

What's the downside for them? Their media is 100% state-controlled, and they've bought a lot of our media and most Democrat politicians, and the media and governing elites in most other countries hate us anyway.
Posted by: James D. | March 23, 2020 at 09:54 AM
Also, I called Rick Wilson a moron yesterday and someone had another, maybe better word to describe him. Just to clarify, I'm running out of words. I need serious words to describe the democrats, the left, the media, and the democratic voters. Moron, to me, wasn't calling someone a simpleton. It was trying to say he/she was a drooling, immoral, piece of flesh still throwing off toxins and working to damage the people who won't submit to his/her ideas, his/her power lust, and his/her hatred.
Posted by: joan | March 23, 2020 at 09:57 AM
The downside for them is what Grenell hinted at the other day in a tweet. Something like, "Our allies know what they did and are furious. Just wait."
Every time Trump says "Chinese Virus," Xi should be more afraid. Obviously they're watching how the free world is behaving, and it must look to them like we're ripe for a fall, but I don't think that's how it'll work out when this dies down and Trump finally retaliates.
Posted by: Extraneus | March 23, 2020 at 10:04 AM
How many coup plotters have been indicted?
Is that the Trump retaliation level (aka none) Xi expects?
Posted by: henry | March 23, 2020 at 10:06 AM
henry, Trump has already amply demonstrated that he's willing to use what's in his arsenal against Chyna. Arguably, Xi's fear of that arsenal is the root of this crisis.
