My wife's brother retired and picked up a part time job at Cabela's. He told me they're opening an hour early tomorrow morning. I said isn't that nice, letting the old fogies shop first in a nice clean store. He said Hell No, we're opening early because gun sales are through the roof.

...this is about hurting the People as much as possible, and hoping they blame their suffering on Trump.

Same here with both our Doctors and Dentists. Telemed services, but not much else.

I rotate between my Dentist and my Periodontist office every three months for cleanings to keep everything under control with some gum issues.

The hygienist I see at each office both have 4 kids. Tough for them to not be working.

The docs just get to start golf season early.

The White House
Office of the Press Secretary
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
March 18, 2020

STATEMENT BY THE PRESIDENT

Today, I have signed into law H.R. 6201, the "Families First Coronavirus Response Act" (the "Act"). The Act makes emergency supplemental appropriations and other changes to law to help the Nation respond to the coronavirus outbreak.

One provision of the bill (division B, section 2302(c)) purports to require the Secretary of Agriculture, upon certain events, to submit a report to the Congress that includes legislative recommendations. My Administration, including the Secretary, will respectfully treat this provision in a manner consistent with Article II, section 3 of the Constitution, which provides the President the exclusive authority to "recommend" to the Congress "such Measures as he shall judge necessary and expedient."

DONALD J. TRUMP

A truly genuine (and somewhat groveling) apology - not for opposing Trump but for the venom with which they attacked not only him but his supporters - would probably go a long way towards rehabilitating NR.

Iggy,

I try to look at the same time each day so that I'm consistent, but right now the growth rate is 42& today as compared to 39% that I calculated last night.

It's an explosion of cases or more testing being done. Maybe both, but I'm inclined to more tests being done per day and faster results as the assembly line works out all the kinks.

Like I said the WHO report sucks. I need to see the next one. Worldometer is more current than Johns Hopkins. I'd go to the former for the latest numbers.

I'll go over the numbers again at my usual 2-3 PM time.

JPMorgan Now Expects A Global Depression In The Second Quarter.

Michael Feroli slashed his Q2 US GDP forecast to a staggering -14%, which he optimistically expects to form the bottom of a V-shaped recovery that then lifts the US economy by +8% and +4% in Q3 and Q4, respectively (at least until the next downward revision in his forecast).
However, if JPM's forecast revision for the US was catastrophic, than its latest global outlook is downright apocalyptic.

In a separate note by JPM's Bruce Kasman, has also taken a flamethrower to his global economic forecasts, and the bank's head of economic policy now anticipates Europe to implode an unprecedented 22%, the UK to crater by a depressionary and with the US plunging 14%, he sees the global economy ex China contracting by a whopping -13.7%. In short, JPM now expects no less than a global depression in the second quarter. This will follow a Q1 quarter in which China is expected to collapse by -40.8%, which however will somehow surge by 57.4% in the second quarter.

California Gov Gavin Newsom has asked people to not gather in large numbers and generally stay inside during the coronavirus outbreak, and so far most are obeying. Schools and businesses have closed, sports leagues have suspended their seasons and Disneyland has shuttered.

But what happens if, weeks from now, a restless population defies public health orders and violence ensues? On Tuesday, when announcing that he had put the National Guard on alert, Newsom said martial law could be used “if we feel the necessity."

“I don't want to get to the point of being alarmist, but we are scaling all of our considerations,” he said.

I did appreciate the fact that they always invited speakers - like VDH who disagreed completely with them. And to this day I wonder where Buckley would be on the issue.

https://www.foxnews.com/world/italy-coronavirus-death-toll-largest-spike-close-china

Italy's coronavirus death toll nears China's after largest one-day spike despite lockdown

There are at least 35,713 total cases in Italy, the country’s health ministry also announced Wednesday. There are 14,363 hospitalized patients with symptoms, with 2,257 in intensive care, while 12,090 are in home isolation.

40% of cases are hospitalized with symptoms and another 6.3& are in intensive care?

No wonder they hit a record number of deaths today.

A doctor just sent me a video by some guy who says breathing hot air (as in a sauna or from your hair dryer) will kill cold and flu viruses.
But what about Chinese viruses?
jimmyk

40% of cases are hospitalized with symptoms and another 6.3& are in intensive care?

I wish someone would report the Italian data by age group, so we could see how much of the high ICU and death rates are due to the large elderly population. I'm sure that can't explain it, but it often gets mentioned as a partial explanation. The numbers there are so shocking it would seem important to get a better understanding of them.

Italy's death rate per case is around 8%. Iran's is about 6%, the UK and Spain around 4%, France 3%. By contrast, Austria and Germany's is about 0.25%. What's going on?

The Infamous Ignatz

Anyone who hasn't read clarice's 10:15 should.
A team from Hong Kong in 2007 essentially predicted this virus based on the first SARS and the Chinese penchant for eating disgusting things.

Coronaviruses are well known to undergo genetic recombination, which may lead to new genotypes and outbreaks. The presence of a large reservoir of SARS-CoV-like viruses in horseshoe bats, together with the culture of eating exotic mammals in southern China, is a time bomb. The possibility of the reemergence of SARS and other novel viruses from animals or laboratories and therefore the need for preparedness should not be ignored.

Narciso

Did any of these countries have such a high infection rate with other pathogens

KevlarKid

Replying to

@JordanSchachtel

What if the baseline we now have if you believe the 1st case reported Feb 12 shows it is. 108 deaths in 5 weeks. 3.08 deaths per day compared to the seasonal Flu of 132 deaths per day. Somethings wrong.

https://techcrunch.com/2020/03/17/white-house-provides-an-update-on-covid-19-testing-in-the-u-s-says-theres-been-a-dramatic-ramp/

“As of today our public health laboratories, meaning the CDC and the public health labs, have reported out 31,878 tests so almost 32,000 tests. The clinical laboratories, the Association of Clinical Laboratories, have reported out about 27,000 tests, and most importantly of those 27,000 during the cumulative period of time 8,200 of them were yesterday.”

That brings the total number of tests conducted between these sources to just under 60,000, which Giroir said represents a “dramatic ramp as the high-throughput [testing] comes in.” He also noted that we don’t yet have numbers reported from individual hospital labs that are also conducting testing..."

So in a day or two we may be able to do 10,000 tests a day. That should give some room for the CDC to loosen the testing criteria. More and wider testing should spike the numbers. That will scare some people, but it will give us a much better idea of the scope and scale of the infections. And the severity of the infections.

KevlarKid

google it, lyle. truss me!

Another Bob

Could a run-of-the-mill internal medicine doc or rheumatologist be talked into writing a scrip for ten days of 600mg/day for Hydroxychloroquine to be stashed in case of COVID-19 infection?
