I'm one of the old geezers alive in 1957. I had the flu, was a sophomore in high school. Lots of teenagers were sick (friends, etc.) What I remember was how hard it hit my system, how high my fever went, but no one else in my family caught it. Worst thing that always makes me shiver is zI had canker sores, roof of mouth, tongue, gums. Almost unbearable.

My dad continued going to the office. My mother was a librarian and opened the library and worked every day. Absolutely no talk of closing anything in my little area of the world. Life went on -- normal. Don't remember any politicians chiming in. My parents were conservatives and talked openly about politics, so think if there had been minute-by-minute coverage they did or didn't like, I'd have heard about it.

Here's the letter that Fr. Jenkins sent out yesterday afternoon closing the Notre Dame campus through the end of the semester:

March 18, 2020

Dear Students and Parents,

On Sunday, March 15th the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued a new recommendation that no gatherings with 50 people or more be held for the next eight weeks. Informed by this recommendation as well as conversations with state and local health officials, and in consultation with other University leaders, I have decided to extend the suspension of in-person classes at Notre Dame to the end of the semester. Distance learning for our students will continue until then.

I deeply regret having come to this conclusion, but it would be impractical and irresponsible to bring our students back to campus before the end of the semester. I urge faculty and students to do the very best they can through distance learning.

In a recent message, I pledged to our senior class that we will do everything possible, within the bounds of health considerations, to bring them back to campus to spend time with one another and to celebrate Commencement with their family and friends. We still plan to hold Commencement, as scheduled, on May 17th, a date that is outside of the eight weeks covered by the CDC guidelines. We recognize, however, that it may be necessary to change those plans.

I recently spoke with student government and class officers of the Class of 2020. As I said to them, we hope to know more in the next two to four weeks and, if we are not able to hold Commencement on May 17th, we will explore with academic and student leaders the possibility of holding Commencement at another date later in the summer. We will, of course, keep everyone informed.

Now, with the cancellation of in-person classes for the rest of the semester, the University will pro-rate room and/or board charges for the spring semester and make the appropriate refund to your student account. I thank our Notre Dame families for their patience and understanding as we address this issue and the scores of others that have emerged in the wake of this pandemic.

We are also working on ways that student belongings may be retrieved from your on-campus residences in a safe and orderly fashion. Students will receive a message on this from the Office of Student Affairs soon.

While the focus of this letter has been thus far on our undergraduate students, we also recognize the profound impact of these necessary decisions on graduate and professional school students and post-doctoral scholars. Additional information for these groups will be forthcoming from the relevant deans.

The Catholic Diocese of Fort Wayne – South Bend made the difficult decision yesterday to suspend the celebration of public Masses in the Diocese. Consequently, Masses will not be open to the public at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart. However, the Congregation of Holy Cross will continue to celebrate Mass daily and the University will make it available via live-streaming Mondays through Saturdays and via Catholic TV on Sundays. I hope some of you will be able to join us remotely.

We in the Notre Dame community, along with nearly everyone around the world, are enduring a difficult, uncertain and anxious time. I thank you for your patience and understanding as we sort through the many challenges and decisions that must be made. I know that, in addition to the many inconveniences of the current moment, many of you struggle with worries about the health and economic security of family and friends. Let us continue to strengthen one another by mutual support and prayer.

In Notre Dame,

Rev. John I. Jenkins, C.S.C.
President

It looks to me like 8 weeks is a really long time in this thing -- what happens if we find a treatment or the weather/whatever turns this thing around? It was only one week ago that the kids left campus. Two weeks ago that they cancelled their Europe trip. Heck, not even three weeks since Notre Dame evacuated their students from the Rome program.

Buckeye

Several years ago I was diagnosed with Sjogren's Syndrome. It's a nasty autoimmune disease that is genetic based. Common symptoms are dry mouth and dry eye with the worst symptom behind joint and muscle pain and stiffness similar to acute arthritis.

The doctor who diagnosed me put me on hydroxychloroquine (aka plaquenil) which happens to be the same drug that may be effective against COVID 19. Neat story on that drug. It was originally designed to be an anti-malaria drug. It was provided to all the construction workers who were building the Panama Canal to prevent/cure malaria. One thing the doctors starting noticing was that everyone taking the hydroxychloroquine were suffering from less joint and muscle pain. Turns out the drug had a beneficial side effect of being an anti-inflammatory drug as well.

Hydroxychloroquine is the only known anti-inflammatory drug that helps people like me with Sjogren's. If I didn't take it my hands and fingers would become mostly unusable due to pain and stiffness within a few days.

Jane

A study by the University of Southampton published this month tells us how China’s cover-up affected the spread of the virus:

The study estimates that by the end of February 2020 there was a total of 114, 325 COVID-19 cases in China. It shows that without non-pharmaceutical interventions – such as early detection, isolation of cases, travel restrictions and cordon sanitaire – the number of infected people would have been 67 times larger than that which actually occurred.

The research also found that if interventions in the country could have been conducted one week, two weeks, or three weeks earlier, cases could have been reduced by 66 percent, 86 percent and 95 percent respectively – significantly limiting the geographical spread of the disease.

A new report by the Future of Humanity Institute discusses innovative strategies for distributing the benefits of AI. It will require a portfolio of public-benefit agreements, limiting regulations (like recent EU proposals), and taxation that will help share the benefits and wealth created by AI-powered tech giants.

The world’s great religions have always preached mutuality. The predicted oscillations of complex natural and man-made systems suggest that it’s never been more important to recognize that we’re all in this together. This new chapter of human existence requires new rules of mutual support, access to learning and opportunity, and a focus on sustainability.

Senator Bernie Sanders might call this a socialist agenda. But this new opportunity platform is closer to European Flexicurity, with a big dose of solution-focused public and private investment that rewards entrepreneurship (i.e., spotting an opportunity and delivering value). We’ll need to invent our way out of this interesting mixture of opportunity and challenge, abundance and existential threat.

More than ever, the climate crisis and the rise of AI mean we’re all in this together. It’s time for community conversations about the implications of this new age of mutuality.

One thing I just remembered about having the flu, [Asian or Hong Kong, have seen it called both and I'm not going to research,] was when I recovered I ended up with a fever blister on my top lip that embarrassed me (I was a cheerleader, didn't feel good enough to yell, dance, or leap about), so I sat in the stands but still kept kept putting my head down so my friends wouldn't tease me.

The interesting thing to me is I never had another fever blister or cold in my whole life. My husband, when he gets sick, will sometimes have a fever blister, and he has colds every winter. I don't catch them. He also has had a canker sore a few times -- I've never had another one. We both take flu shots. In spite of the shot, several times he's still had a bad case of the flu over the years. I hadn't until last winter. I, caught the flu from him, ended up with bronchitis and it took me two months to get over it.

I've always thought the Asian or Hong Kong flu I had as a teenager must have been like a smallpox vaccination to my system. But, then, I am an old geezer and might be slipping. :)

Where are you getting that Burr "traded" on the inside info? I didn't see anything in that NPR article that wasn't discussed here at JOM 3+ weeks ago. I think the entire world knew 3 weeks ago that COVID19 spread more aggressively than any virus we have seen recently.

The article said Burr helped write the Pandemic and All-Hazards Preparedness Act (PAHPA) so what he told that gathering were actions he knew the government would take if it got serious.

But in his public comments about the threat of COVID-19, Burr never offered the kind of precise warning that he delivered to the small group of his constituents.

That comment in the article should have triggered everyone's Fake News BS alert. It's not Burr's or any Senators job to pass on that kind of information. It's Trump's job to determine what the government's public comments are.
