Tyler Cowen of Marginal Revolution looks at the variety of epidemiological models for coronavirus and stays with the "better safe than sorry" approach. I concur. He also links to this excellent non-firewalled FT piece by Tim Harford.
A major part of the controversy revolves around the question of just how many people could already have contracted COVID19 asymptomatically. We can test for antibodies so it should be possible to answer this question. A project is proposed in the UK and this Dutch blood bank study of donors should be interesting. I would guess we'd hear about results somewhat promptly. A few weeks, maybe?
(They're thinking.)

On Thursday, everyone was all over her for not being able to vote until Saturday. They were floating the unanimous consent idea in order to not have to call people back and delay further, but then Massie came out and took the spotlight off of her.
The actual timeline is spelled out in this interview with Cavuto:
•On Tuesday Massie found out that The Whip was telling everyone to stay home because that had a unanimous consent plan.
•Tuesday night Massie drove to DC and informed leadership that he was going to ask for a recorded vote.
•Leadership told Massie “if you ask for that vote on Friday, the vote will be delayed until Saturday.
•Massie told leadership that they better get people back by Thursday if they don’t want a delay
•leadership had indeed assembled a quorum by Thursday in preparation for Friday’s vote.
•Friday’s quorum correct voice vote went through on time.
•For the first time in Massie’s career a recorded vote, that doesn’t cause a delay, was denied after a successful voice vote.
I just think Massie screwed up by not communicating with the WH
This is covered, sort of, in the interview. Massie did talk to Trump but he said he failed to get Trump to understand the parliamentary issue and how it led to zero delay.
Some make think they need to defend Trump from being called stupid by me even though I said no such thing. I hope that worn out road doesn’t get traveled again..

Huge arguments over continuing garden services on NextDoor Sunnyvale.
Most fall into one of these camps:
1) shut up nanny state scold
2) order gardeners to stand down, if we don't follow instructions we WILL ALL DIE!
3) be noble and pay your gardeners not to come

Things have changed and will never be the same. I will never have under a month or two of stored food ever again, or other essentials, for example. (Go long on freezers!)
If the Mardi Gras and de Blasio's advice to party on in Chinatown for Lunar New Year contributed to NOLA and NYC being hot spots, we will be receiving distancing alerts in certain years, seasons and locations long after this thing is done.

Micellanious culinary notes:
There seems to have been a local run on coconut milk. MrsJ cooks a lot of Thai food -- in the last week we've had Red (beef) and Green (chicken/deep-fried tofu) curries -- and we just need it. No one seems to stock it, including Walmart. So we are trying some freeze dried coconut milk from our favorite NYC spice house.
I first had potato chops at the house of my late friend/roommate. His aunt was visiting from Baghdad, and was cooking. "What are you making?" we inquired. "Potato chops." "No, no, no. What do you call it in Baghdad?" "Potato chops."

Can anyone beat baked salmon, reheated knish and sous vide cabbage tonight?
Smoked/braised wild boar shanks in a broth of Italian tomato purée, veal stock, and red wine (and lotso garlic, natch). Gnocchi and broccoli blanched and finished with butter and white balsamic.
Opened a ‘10 Giodo Brunello a while ago and decanted it. Can’t wait! 😙🍷

Nice, Clarice. I love broccoli rabe. Lilia always called it broccoli "di rape" (dee-rap`-e), but my mom and aunts always said it like some guy named Rob.

Speaking of shortages...
We seem to be seeing sparser supplies of yogurt, cheese, chocolate, a few other non-emergency sort of things than typical here in Flyover.
I assume it’s a simple matter of it getting displaced on the trucks by currently higher-selling stuff.

BREAKING: Trump says he will not put a quarantine in place for New York, New Jersey, or Connecticut but will instead institute "a strong travel advisory"
Posted by: henry | March 28, 2020 at 08:28 PM
Massie did talk to Trump but he said he failed to get Trump to understand the parliamentary issue and how it led to zero delay.
That is sad. He must have bucked or challenged Trump in that convo or had other communication problems. I'm not blaming Trump for his message of "We have to get this passed" against Massie's double message of 1) a procedural objection, and 2) objecting to the content of the bill that 100% of R senators approved.

dr J, I always keep on hand some powdered coconut milk (My Spice Sage sells it). If you want it thinner add more water; if you want it thicker, add less. Takes up little storage space and lasts forever.

Happy Birthday Cathyf:
These meals all sound like gourmet cooking. How did all of you learn to cook such wonderful meals?
RSE:
Love hearing about your recipes and I want you to know I am praying for your mom and dad and your family during these challenging times.
Your girls sound so dedicated and happy to try new things.
MM: I agree completely with what you have stated tonight.
I take the long view, looking ahead five months from now.
People need this money now as students of politics for over 30 years, I believe you and I understand this. President Trump is doing a bang up job.
You and Porch were his first supporters so continue to champion him.
Prediction: Massie will lose his bid for re-election in November.
His constituents will see his stunt for what it was.Attention seeking behavior.
Pelosi had to pass the bill or be run out of town on a rail.
Another stunt on her part to appear powerful.
Just like her withholding the impeachment papers.
When she goes down in defeat in November, she will go down hard , just like Hillary.
Narcissists always do and never see it coming.
Cathy, the voting part and ballot harvesting are not in the bill.
