amom,
Gorgeous down here on the First Coast. A mere zephyr of a breeze, calm and silersver sea, very sunny. At 74F already.
Mrs. JiB is on Whale Watch dutyon the dunes cross-over. Perfecet day to catch a Right Whale breaching as there are no waves to speak of. Waters are warm approaching 80F and saw lots of people in the surf when I drove through Flagler Beach yesterday. Last few days of Bike Week (thank God:). A lot of bikes sporting Trump stickers or flags.

One thing I have been doing is getting extra sheets of purell from by door to keep wiping hands as I touch things in the store to put in cart. Then get more as I leave grocer. Easy to do, but not something I am seeing.

With the sports pundits out of work, and time to enjoy other pass-times, what games offer the least amount of opportunity for contagion?
Cards? Dice?
With Go you could have each player remove his color of captured stones and sequester them to be counted at game's end. Then you could wash all the stones in soapy water for two choruses of 'God Save the Queen'.
Or I could go rake the yard.

Consider this, if the Wuhan virus really did come from someone eating a bat and the Chicoms had their knickers wadded over the whispers it came from their lab, would they cook up some crazy crap about Dog Faced Pony Soldiers sneaking it into someone's flying rodent soup or would they just point to the evidence it was not their fault because it was some bat bug gone loco?
Posted by: Ignatz Ratzkiwatzki | March 14, 2020 at 10:53 AM
The most likely theory I've seen is that someone from the lab was selling infected lab animals to the market for extra cash instead of incinerating them according to regulations.

I think what that Tweeter may mean is that for the majority--and perhaps WAY MORE than 80%--of folks, getting Covid19 will be pretty similar to a cold.

What I want to see this summer after it is all done is how the total US deaths from the WuFlu plus the RegFlu compare to normal "peak" years.
Then we can decide if erasing $10 Trillion from US Stocks alone and uncounted trillions of lost income was money well spent.

Another Costco sitrep from Flyover USA.
Got there right at advertised opening, but I think they let customers in a bit early. Parking lot wasn't bad at all.
Sign right at the entrance displaying the list of items out-of-stock. Pretty much what you'd expect. Zero TP of any brand. Zero hand sanitizer. Zero rubbing alcohol. Zero Clorox wipes. Zero baby wipes. Zero disposable diapers. Only Kleenex brand tissues and not much. Only Bounty brand paper towels, with a limit of 2, and employees stationed there handing them out.
Surprisingly enough, they had Clorox bleach so I snagged a pack. (We actually needed it for the laundry, but will put it to use for cleaning too.)
Then to the local grocery (a chain of smaller supermarkets placed in better neighborhoods) for some fresh stuff. Cashier said that after two days of true looney tunes, was quite normal today. So long as you didn't want TP or any disinfectants.
Last stop, liquor superstore. Nearly empty. The only thing they seemed to be running short of was the box wine. The pallets were getting sparse. Stocked up (normal stocking up, not emergency stocking up) at my leisure. Dammit, forgot to ask about Everclear...

The vitriol on Facebook really is disgusting. It seems that calling it Wuhan virus is racist. It should be remembered that the Spanish influenza of 1918 started in China as well. That's what happens when you have a disease ridden, germ filled semi tropical environment with poor/nonexistent hygiene.
Flush toilets are a luxury, as is toilet paper in many places.
Not even sure if they have public health departments worth the name. Keeping people in their homes at gunpoint is not in the manual in most countries.
Maybe they should run that Gwyneth Paltrow epidemic movie over and over again to reinforce where the virus came from.

Shook hands with the new bartender at my go-to neighborhood bar and hugged a friend last night. I did acquiesce to an elbow bump this morning when I saw a friend at the health club after my swim. I had the pool to myself for the first time in a long time on Saturday morning. The health club is in a hotel at which a lot of Europeans stay. Thanks for helping clear out the pool for me, President Trump.
And yes, the new bartender did wash her hands immediately after shaking mine.
My overall take on Trump's performance: He did great shutting down the China visits, then acted too dismissively toward the WhuFlu threat, and now is acting fine. My main criticism of Trump is that he should have been all over the bureaucrats sooner to loosen up their test procedures. If he had done that, of course, the same idiots who are now griping about slow ramp up of testing would have called him Hitler.
My overall take on the media: Trump is wrong to call the media the enemy of the people. Most enemies act with more honor than the media. My go-to sources are anonamom and DrJ. As far as I am concerned, the two best commentators are right here at JOM and are doing it for free!

fr last thread: "I tell you, the CBS and PBS reporters set my teeth on edge!"
Yamiche "Sumo Girl "Alcindor is the PBS-PMSNBC-NBC political contributor who asked the nazty question re the "disbandment" of the NSC's "pandemic team".
Yamiche is the current PBS sight gag with obvious oral impulse control issues narrating the Trump presidency.
The nappy-headed Georgetown journalism grad was the point pit on Peach Mint.
So imagine my surprise when she waddles up to the unsanitized mic to point fingers about the NSC's pandemic threat assessment team of paper pushers being re-shuffled as the NSC was getting reorganized during the past 2 years, following the team director's retirement in 2018.
Two reasons for my surprise: the reshuffle was carried out by Lefty hero-in-waiting of Peach Mint John Bolton (so why attack Bolton's executive recs) and, the upstream threat assessment team had no responsibilties for dealing with on the ground service and response to epidemics/pandemics downstream.
You'd think Trump had done to the NSC what Obama did to NASA with his Islamic outreach (which was never questioned by any in Lefty media) and his CDC sandbagging on the effects of climate change.
Yamiche Alcindor got her nose rubbed in it at the presser as her mic was cut off and POTUS slammed her question. Then, the other press harpies attack POTUS for denying something Yammie said he did.... which he was correct in saying he didn't.
Bolton said 4.9.20:
"Claims that streamlining NSC structures impaired our nation's bio defense are false.
Global health remained a top NSC priority, and its expert team was critical to effectively handling the 2018-19 Africa Ebola crisis.
The angry Left just can't stop attacking, even in a crisis."
Posted by: KevlarKid | March 14, 2020 at 12:53 PM
The first rule of any pandemic is that no one has a clue as to the cause, testing, cure or epidemiology of the disease at the beginning. It's never happened before.
So far there are 1600 cases with 41 deaths as someone reported as of today. 24 of those deaths were at a skilled nursing facility in Seattle, oo we do know that it affects the weakest terribly.
Not much news coming out of those who were on the cruise ships.
South Korea and China seem to have turned the corner.
I think the best bet at the moment is shorting toilet paper stocks because there's going to be a huge slump in demand for the next several months.

Kevlar,
That was one of my favorite moments in the Press Conference. I hope all future pressers follow this pattern — if the weather allows:
1. Hold the event outdoors rather than in that little press room where screeching and shouting reporter's voices can reverberate off the walls.
2. Use two or more microphones. If a reporter wants to grandstand, hog the mic, get belligerent or ask add on questions ad nauseam, just cut off the mic they're holding and hand the second mic to someone else.
3. If possible, depending on the type of press conference, have a helicopter revving for departure in the background.

Set out for the bi-weekly big grocery shop at the N.Buzzkill Safeway. Arrived 605a.
Restocking was in full swing. The only commodities in short supply were frozen vegetables and chikken tits.
TP, sanitizers, cleaners were in full. my buddy is the floor manager. the store policy is to release those supplies gradually during a 12 hour cycle. Hoarders flock to other stores. Limits per customer favors local shoppers. Banditos in pickups hitting stores throughout the Bay area are making things worse at stores w/o such controls.
I'm loving how the snobs here in buzzkill are devouring supplies in their little "locally owned and over priced" stores are being forced out into COSTCOs and other "Big Box" stores so they can clean their privates. the N. Buzkill neighborhood blog is clogged with the "live simply so others can simply live crowd" yammering on about how Bernie would never have let this happen.
biggest fear among the saintly here in Buzkill is there dont seem to be enough cops for emergency calls.

Flattening the curve is the key. School closings, event cancellations, less travel — the social distance thing are the key. Unlike Europe (socialized medicine), theUS can handle 150 million of us getting Coronavirus. It becomes a problem if we all get it the same day.

I don't want to nominate another politician tho.

Jane:
I still love Palin.
Saw her live at a rally in Lakewood during the campaign.

Lyle:
We talked about that last week, but I can't remember what my thoughts were. :-)

That clip of her the other night was cringeworthy, though.

We will have any number of good candidates for President in 2024.
I am not surprised that the President asked for Ted Cruz’s advice on the corona virus and his plan to close off China.
He knows how to tap intelligent people for ideas.
He also consults Rand Paul wrt ending wars and bringing troops home.
Tom Cotton is another solid choice with a military background.

Steph:
This is how disease spreads.
Entitled press people who think they can push their way in even if they are ill.

lyle,
My thoughts are unprintable. I would have to take up another pastime other than current events, maybe go back to embroidery or gardening.

it's going to be a tough race and a close popular vote with media and cheat baked in.
getting the old band back together with Mooch mailing it in and zero chemistry with ol Dead Joe gives their side a stenchy hold yer nose factor worse than Hillary.

One small correction: There will be Super Rugby League matches tonight and tomorrow from Australia on ESPN+, if not cancelled before hand.

DaveinMass:
Disagree.
Palin is a good sport and can laugh at herself.
A quality lacking in all Dem politicians.

"Moochelle as veep. Thoughts?"
Can I make it to the bathroom or just throw up in the wastebasket?

Palin's critical flaw his her dumpster fire of a personal life. it would take her tens of millions to bulletproof herself against this media. cabinet post at best.

Reliable GOP prospects for 2024 will emerge as Trump hammers away during 2.0. the squeamish will reveal themselves.

I could totally see Sarah Palin as a cabinet person now that she is unloading her husband.
I always wanted her to run against Meerkowski for the Senate but the media would have made it a bloodbath.
