Many Italians in Northern Italy sold their leather goods and textiles companies to China. Italy then allowed 100,000 Chinese from Wuhan/Wenzhou to move to Italy to work in these factories, with direct Wuhan flights. Result: Northern Italy is Europe’s hotspot for Wuhan Coronavirus

jimmyk

We'll see, iggy, but my guess is that even with all the measures in place, the number of cases will continue to grow, and we'll be many more weeks in this shutdown mode. Hypothetically we could probably stop the growth by an extreme solution like curfews and no social interaction, but that's impossible. So now a process that might have taken weeks will take months.

I'm not completely wedded to that view, but it seems plausible to me.

sbwaters

jimmyk, yardstick of weeks or months misrepresents the task.

The goal isn't to defeat the virus by isolation but delay it.

Shutdown mode will likely end sooner as effective treatments are validated and possibly a vaccine created.

My brother is a vested employee at the Belagio in Las Vegas. He is a professional chef considered a line employee of which there are thousands in that small city unto itself.

They were furloughed March 12th indefinitely. Estimates for getting called back to a Belagio operating at normal capacity is 2 months. He's signed on with a boutique restaurant to ride it out.

This is a very useful article discussing the chinese movement into Italy, from 2108:

The Chinese Workers Who Assemble Designer Bags in Tuscany

https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2018/04/16/the-chinese-workers-who-assemble-designer-bags-in-tuscany

all sorts of fascinating tidbits...

excerpt:

The Chinese firms gradually expanded their niche, making clothes for middle-tier brands, like Guess and American Eagle Outfitters. And in the past decade they have become manufacturers for Gucci, Prada, and other luxury-fashion houses, which use often inexpensive Chinese-immigrant labor to create accessories and expensive handbags that bear the coveted “Made in Italy” label. Many of them are then sold to prosperous consumers in Shanghai and Beijing. It’s not just Italian brands that have profited from this cross-cultural arrangement: a Chinese leather-goods entrepreneur I recently met with just outside Prato was wearing a forty-thousand-dollar Bulgari watch.

More than ten per cent of Prato’s two hundred thousand legal residents are Chinese. According to Francesco Nannucci, the head of the police’s investigative unit in Prato, the city is also home to some ten thousand Chinese people who are there illegally. Prato is believed to have the second-largest Chinese population of any European city, after Paris, and it has the highest proportion of immigrants in Italy, including a large North African population.

Mrs JiB and I were sitting on our terrace looking across the 18th fairway to our clubhouse and I thought out-loud "when will they close the clubhouse?".

10 seconds later we got an email that effective tomorrow the clubhouse is closed but you will be able to pick up food orders and take them home. Courses are still open for the time being.

Meanwhile in the UK, more drastic measures to be undertaken: [via The Torygraph]

"People aged over 70 face up to four months in self-isolation and the public risk being taken into jail or a £1,000 fine if they refuse to be tested or quarantined for suspected coronavirus. The emergency powers, expected to be announced this week, allow police in England and Wales to use "reasonable force" to detain people who are at risk of infecting others. The measures come as the widow of the UK's youngest coronavirus victim has spoken of her despair at losing her "life partner and soul mate", after he was named as retired police officer Nick Matthews. The UK's coronavirus death toll has risen to 35, with 1,391 cases, and immunology experts have criticised the Government's strategy to allow large numbers of people to become infected and develop "herd immunity" so the more vulnerable do not contract the disease. The British Society of Immunology warned the plan could have "severe consequences" and the Government appears to be distancing itself from the idea. The major development overnight came from the mayors of New York City and Los Angeles, the two largest cities in the United States, who said they were ordering restaurants, theaters, bars and movie houses to close in an effort to slow the spread of the virus. "

Marlene

Jack,I think the 3 month requirement has to do with health insurance eligibility for Canadians. Longer term requires a special health insurance policy.

New York Gov. Cuomo warns US won't have enough hospital beds for coronavirus pandemic

It wouldn’t be possible to have enough beds for the worst case projections. How could we possibly have enough ICU beds for 3-5% of the population at once? Let alone enough doctors and nurses and other health care workers. We’d have to concert our entire economy and workforce to do that.

It’s like saying there aren’t enough firemen to put out all the fires if 5% of all the buildings in a city were on fire at once. Duh, obviously there aren’t.

Explain ?

My friends in Ireland are upset that neighboring (British) Northern Ireland is keeping its schools open, even after Ireland on Friday ordered all schools closed.

Apparently some officials in Northern Ireland actually argued that, even if their people get infected in mass numbers, there will be a benefit because the Northern Irish then will have 'herd immunity' to protect them from a possible follow-up pandemic next year.

Extraneus

900 new cases in NYC, wonder how many cases of regular flu there? I think I saw figures suggesting that the death rate for this particular flu that is now stopping society (can't remember humans acting this stupid for the last ten new flu's) is around 4 pct for those over 60, and they almost ALL seem to have preexisting conditions. But over the age of 80 it's something like 14%. It's rough to say out loud (apparently), but if you're over 80 there's got to be more of a chance that this is your last year anyway than if you were 60.

Imagine if Trump had said, "It's not a big deal, if you're old try to stay away from people for a while", and leave it at that, and stuck to it. I wish he had done that, even if it meant he wouldn't get reelected. History, I think, would regard him as brave, and correct.
