"Reporters aren't lazy. Telling the truth would be easier than lying."

This quote from Gavin Wax' article about the FDA linked by Clarice above says it all.

When I read anything from the WaPO or the NYT, or even AP, McClatchy or Reuters, I am on edge. What lie are they spinning now? Why are they using this language instead of something more concise and straightforward? This has been true for a very long time.

It is not the result of sloppiness or bad editing. It's an agenda.

(Note that I did not italicize the quote. A man's gotta know his limitations.)

How did that dunderhead get herself elected in Michigan?

After all, didn't he put Flint--bankrupt and bleeding money--under emergency control of the state???

Flint water poisoning, all laid at the feet of the R governor.

Also it was 2018, so the usual off-year rebound for the out-of-office party.

I see the NYT has its big headline front page news story editorial claiming Trump took no decisive actions for six weeks after it was clear the pandemic was going to be a problem. Let's see now, was Jan 14th the WHO was still saying that human-to-human spread was not evident? And Jan 23rd that Fauci was still saying it was nothing to worry about? And Jan 30th Trump banned travel from China? I haven't bothered to read the story to try to figure out their own fictional timeline.

OL, I offer the exception to prove the rule on fed agencies. The air traffic control operation is beyond brilliant. After nearly 8k hrs of flying and prolly 20k different controllers I’ve talked with, I can count on maybe one hand those that screwed things up.

To emphasize that I’m not alone on this, every few years someone tries to privatize the operation and the AOPA (pilot association) goes into overdrive to kill the idea. It’s why we are the only country on the planet where private flying flourishes.

On the other hand, the FRA (railroad side) are reasonably competent, but they mainly oversee the RRs running their own ops and most new rules are produced by committees comprised of RR worker bees. The glaring exception was the mandate of Positive Train Control which was in the works for years (Clarice has met one of the key guys), but the feds overruled many workable solutions in favor of whatever edict seemed sexy at the moment.

And There It Is… Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer Bans Buying US Flags During Lockdown

MissMarple2

I find it interesting that President Trump posted those 3 segments from Jesse Watters show. Jeff Carlson pointed out that the 3rd video, the one with Dr. Faucci, is especially interesting beginning at the 4:30 mark.

Ignatz Ratzkiwatzki

I know I'm probably swimming against the tide on this one and I do acknowledge Fauci should not be mouthing off in public but he does have a point...possibly*.
If you're going to do a lockdown, the earlier you do it the more effective and the shorter it will be.
By waiting until mid March the genie is out of the bottle so it spreads all over anyway, but you get the pain of a lockdown on top of it.

*This is an illustration of how limited man is. No one can even answer definitively if this strategy saves lives or not. Clearly it would save lives early on, but if that is only for the people to die a few months later anyway then no lockdown makes any kind of sense. Under no circumstances will Americans sit in their homes for 18 months for a vaccine that might not even appear or for any other reason. If a true quarantine of the at risk groups who make up most of the hospitalizations and some moderate social distancing for the rest of us, ala Sweden, would have kept the healthcare system from being overloaded [a big if], it would have mitigated the one thing a general lockdown achieved but at a far lower cost.

Ignatz Ratzkiwatzki

The one thing that seems clear is, this isn't SARS 1.

So with that IHME "model" website, does anyone know why they show actual data for deaths but not for hospital resources? Have hospitalizations peaked like Fauci seems to suggest, and if so, when?

Btw, when they show actuals, they should leave the original projections up so people can compare. It's ok if models have been adjusted, but then the original and new models should both be shown. No disappearing the older models.

If it's true Atkinson was working on FISA [he moved to Nat Security division in 2016] then whoever suggested he be IG to Trump in 2018, long after FISA abuses were known, should also be fired.
With Atkinson you didn't have the watchmen watching each other, you had the watchman watching himself.

whoever suggested he be IG to Trump in 2018, long after FISA abuses were known, should also be fired.

He was appointed by Obama in 2018, so the question is why Trump didn't fire him sooner. I would presume firing people in those sorts of ostensibly non-partisan (/sarc) positions costs some political capital, and he was already setting about to fire Comey.

Win the house, keep the senate and presidency-- clean house and overturn the civil service protections imposed by Obama with legislation to prevent such inbred partisanship.

Was the civil service chicanery done by Obama EO?

jimmyk

Have hospitalizations peaked like Fauci seems to suggest, and if so, when?

Hard to say for the US. Lots of states don't report their numbers, and many reported numbers look suspect, especially for "current hospitalizations," which should be the number of people currently hospitalized for WuFlu. For example, California was reporting modestly growing numbers for two weeks, on the order of 5%/day, then yesterday the number practically doubled. A bunch of other states have reported the exact same number for 3-5 days in a row. But if you believe the numbers they seem to be growing at 3%/day or so. But they've virtually leveled off in NY/NJ though.

jimmyk

That sounds like something I'd say.

Brain cramp. Was still thinking about the crazy Michigan Governor. Yeah, something slipped under the radar there. Agree it's hard to understand.

Hillary lackeys warned she would fire me as soon as she was elected for blowing whistle on her secret server reveals government inspector

Former Intelligence Community Inspector General Charles McCullough III said his job security had been threatened after he exposed Hillary Clinton for having 'Top Secret' emails on her unsecured server.

'I was told that we would be the first two to be fired with her administration,' McCullough said of himself and a colleague to Fox News, in an interview that aired Monday. 'That, that was definitely doing to happen.'

McCullough, an Obama appointee, had told Republican leadership of both the Senate Intelligence and Foreign Affairs committees that some of Clinton's messages had surpassed the 'Top Secret' distinction and in January 2016, as Democratic primary voting was beginning, he faced an escalating backlash.

I don't remember this.

Extraneus

I wonder why no authors are listed on that (undated) paper.

Anyway, how did this prediction hold up so far?

In addition to a large number of deaths from COVID-19, the epidemic in the US will place a load well beyond the current capacity of hospitals to manage, especially for ICU care. These estimates can help inform the development and implementation of strategies to mitigate this gap, including reducing non-COVID-19 demand for services and temporarily increasing system capacity. These are urgently needed given that peak volumes are estimated to be only three weeks away. The estimated excess demand on hospital systems is predicated on the enactment of social distancing measures in all states that have not done so already within the next week and maintenance of these measures throughout the epidemic, emphasizing the importance of implementing, enforcing, and maintaining these measures to mitigate hospital system overload and prevent deaths.

Also, why were the authors still believing China's reported data on 3/27, and basing their projections on this?

In Wuhan, strict social distancing was instituted on January 23, 2020, and by the time new infections reached 1 or fewer a day (March 15, 2020), the confirmed proportion of the population infected was less than 0.5%.

In this cohort of patients hospitalized for severe Covid-19 who were treated with compassionate-use remdesivir, clinical improvement was observed in 36 of 53 patients (68%). Measurement of efficacy will require ongoing randomized, placebo-controlled trials of remdesivir therapy.

Why can't the numbers simply be compared with patients who didn't receive any antiviral medications, or to numbers for patients who received different antiviral medications?

clarice

By Michael Fumento:
On March 29, 2020 Dr. Anthony Fauci, since 1984 the director of the National Institutes of Allergies and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), predicted that, based on epidemiological models, there would be 100-200,000 U.S. coronavirus deaths. A few days later he upped that to as many as 240,000. But that same week, about the sources for those figures, he said: “I’ve spent a lot of time on the models. They don’t tell you anything. You can’t really rely upon models.”
Fauci was the man who kicked off the U.S. AIDS hysteria. He was the sole author of a 1983 piece in a prestigious medical journal that declared that the disease might be transmissible by “routine close contact, as within a family household.” Shortly after that publication, he assumed his current prestigious job, from which he continued to ride the AIDS fear wave. In 1987, columnist George Will said on TV that the heterosexual AIDS threat was overstated. “That’s not correct,” Fauci protested. He then predicted an outbreak of many future heterosexual AIDS cases. This prediction proved false. Fauci repeated his alarmist pattern in later disease panics. 16 years ago he declared that we’re “due for . . . massive person-to-person” spread of Avian flu H4N1. It never happened. More recently he hyped the threat of the Zika virus, demanding billions more in taxpayer funds. Zika barely touched two U.S. states before burning out on its own.
