Countdown to LeBron fans... 3... 2....

Jim,SunnyvaleCA,USA

Good try, ImNotFolly, but that wily veteran sbw is a tough nut to crack LOL.

On the back thread I posted info about some CA protest events in planning stage. I don't have a FaceBook acct anymore, and I haven't listed out the dates/times/places for the protests.
Maybe another Californian will do that, we'll see.

In the meantime, I was emailing with Phil from the podcast CaliforniaUnderground. He's based in San Diego but covers issues of the whole state.
He mentions the next episode will cover this group:
"I am going to cover an organization this week called Fully Open CA who are organizing protests across the state on May 1st. Their site is www.wehaverights.com."

RattlerGator

Jordan, Jordan, Jordan. His acolytes will be out in full force yet again.

((( sigh )))

But I'm sure as hell going to watch it. Loved, loved, loved his amazing talent.

Thank goodness Germany is coming to its senses.

By the way, did y'all happen to catch the Hoover Institution UNCOMMON KNOWLEDGE discussion hosted by Peter Robinson with Dr. Jay Bhattacharya ???

I thought it was outstanding and on point re all things CCP Virus study in Santa Clara County, California.

But a ten-part series?

Plus MJ was (is?) not a nice person. Wonder if ESPN will offer an unvarnished truth?

The Infamous Ignatz

--sbw, in what passes for town here (Union Grove or Waterford), Main Street had restaurants, bars, hardware stores, NAPA stores, auto repair, hair salons, yoga studios, bowling alleys, and other privately held small businesses. All shut down, except for the liquor stores.--

It may be different owners, which in itself is a tragedy since this was not a natural recession, but when people want to do those things the supply will be provided.

I don't think we know yet how this will shake out, partly because we still don't know how long it will last.
I could see things roaring back or staying crushed for some time.
Anyone who does know has a much clearer crystal ball than me.
Or better arranged chicken guts.

Ig, unless there’s a big turnaround in the fear factor that’s been drummed in, I think it’s a slow comeback.

I just got a text today from my haircut place saying that when they reopen they intend to space out appointments farther to allow more time for cleaning, limit the number of people in the shop, etc. They’re designing a slow recovery for themselves.

Another Bob

That said, different types of businesses can do better at getting up to speed.

henry

A lot depends on who has savings to start a business.

Extraneus

For Herr Merkel to grow the nads to send Xi a bill for 1 pfenning, let alone 130 billion Euroweenies is astonishing.

Yeah, I think the headline was misleading. The "bill" came from a newspaper. I don't notice if they even reported the name of the newspaper, but they did spend a good amount of time on Trump's comments yesterday about whether China made a mistake or did it on purpose, which I saw in the replay and thought were fairly monumental.

Another Bob,

On the other hand I ran out to get wine and cigs at the liquor store just now, and no one had on masks or any signs or anything.

So, it depends on whether the Fearful People are outnumbered by the "This is all BS" people or not.

re comorbidities and blood pressure.

MJW--- my understanding of comorbidity is two interacting chronic diseases or more; untreated high bp AND sclerotic arteries for example.

i have several doctors who subscribe to the age+ 100 formula for reasonable bp level without other chronic diseases. on meds post heart surgery i'm at 120/63.

also, as you must already know, high blood pressure isnt HYPERTENSION " abnormally high blood pressure". i was in the 140s for 30 years ( by age 35)...high but not hypertensive.

henry

Trump live

Extraneus

I may be off on this, but high BP strikes this non-medically educated person as likely a symptom of some other condition(s), and the meds treat the symptom, like taking Tylenol for a fever.

Word. I had perfect BP until one day it went out of whack. I was not in a risk group and I had a great doc at the time, best I've had, who tried me on a few meds until we found the right one. Meanwhile, I consistently asked for a root-cause diagnosis. He humored me a while, did a few tests, and then basically confided that unless it's a kidney thing, which they can see from a urine test, it's the symptom that gets you if you don't treat it, not the cause, so we treated the symptom and moved on. Maybe others have different experiences.

Jane

Lyle,

What are we voting on?

henry

Ext, don’t know on the kidney bit (got kicked in one in college, so only have one and a bit functioning). Seems to be a correlation with cholesterol / triglycerides, conditioning. But other autonomic neuro issues may dominate. As Jane pointed out, getting older isn’t easy.

Gentlejim

Iggy,
Since we’re trying to predict the outcome for Main Street due to the China virus I’ve been using tea leaves, but I still don’t have a clue what to expect. I’m not confident that the mom and pops will be returning.

Lyle,
I’m another “no” vote.

Extraneus

Nope. My cholesterol and conditioning were fine and still are. It was and is a mystery.

I only mentioned this, btw, to respond to Jimmy's wondering about why someone might not get a root-cause diagnosis, not to discuss my own history.

Manuel Transmission

High BP: How meaningful is that when something like 75% of people over 65 have high blood pressure under the current guidelines?

I think high blood pressure is a steaming pile scam created by big pharma to sell you a lot of worthless shit. How do I know? Well for one, my seasoned AME (pilot doc) who has to get each of us until recently under 160, now has to keep us under 155 for no other reason than some bureaucrat said so. The dirty little secret maybe from even before Amom’s time, is take your age and add 100. And how did that work for the pilot community? Well, they used to be mandatorily retired at ... wait for it...60!

The doc’s explanation was that the higher BP was your body’s natural compensation for aging. In that way, kev’s ultra low numbers may be due to his plumbing getting thoroughly scrubbed, which is completely different than artificially lowering it with bogus meds. /rant

Manuel Transmission

Sorry kev, I was typing when you confirmed the age + 100.

peter

jimmyk, your 5:52 on the last thread was interesting to me. I don't know a lot about conductors, but they do fascinate me- the concept of a musician whose instrument is an orchestra. Many years ago, I read a book by a Leonard Schwarz, MD, the inventor of heavy hands, which were basically light weight dumbbells that had a strap on them, so they stayed on your hand without your having to grip them tightly. Schwartz recommended all these different walking routines with heavy hands, and the intensity varied by how high you held them. If you held them waist high or higher, it was a much more intense workout then holding them at arms' length. If you held them shoulder high or higher it was a very intense workout. Schwartz hypothesized that conductors lived longer than others because they spent so much time with their arms held over their heads. Ever since then, whenever I read an obituary of a conductor, I test Dr. Schwartz' theory by noting the age of the conductor. Anyway, you mentioned that Carlos Kleiber (who only lived to be 74) was someone you admired, but noted that he was more interested in his sports cars than conducting. By the way Dr. Leonard Schwartz, the inventor of heavy hands, lived to be 84; he died of lymphoma.

DrJ

jimmyk,

You are right about Kleiber the younger. It is why I didn't include editorial comments. His few Beethoven recordings are very good.

Old Lurker

I think focusing on China is a diversion.

They are what they are. Like the scorpion and the frog. Let's fix our problems ourselves, then decide what to change about which countries we need in the future and for what. Then get on with it.

Not sure when the grass will be the same. I had stayed away as that walking crowd can be a bit bratty under the best of circumstances so I prefer it when not crowded. Like when it is sprinkling but not raining hard.

Today was a nice day in MN. I took advantage of reduced airline traffic to fly my little airplane to MSP (the big one) for the first time, and probably the last. $92 landing fee and 15 gallons of $8/gallon fuel. I've never been inside Class B before except by accident (and filing an ASRS afterwards) so it was a big first for me. At departure the tower offered an intersection takeoff but I requested the whole 10,000 ft runway. I figured I'd paid for it. I got to fly over my house. My friend's son, who is 16 and just started flying lessons, ran the radio and I piloted. He started flying with me when he was 4 and had to sit on a booster seat. Now he can be a second set of eyes and ears. Also too now I can say I've been to all 145 public use airports in MN.

“I’m not a fan of Mitt Romney”

Trump is ground pounding the media

Jim,SunnyvaleCA,USA

I don't follow the LA Times so this was new though unsurprising to me. Quite the statistic!

"In mid-March state and local officials painted a doomsday scenario for Californians, telling them that if they did not “shelter in place” 25 million (yes, million) Californians would be infected with coronavirus within two months, 5 million of which would require hospitalization. With the state having only 90,000 hospital beds total, clearly any scenario involving the need for 5 million hospital beds would be catastrophic.
...
As of 3 p.m. April 18 there were 30,439 confirmed cases of coronavirus in the state and 1,139 deaths, making those projections absurdly inaccurate."

Yes, that's what my mother's doc tested her for, but otherwise it's stick with the BP meds. I thought high BP was also a symptom of atherosclerosis or arteriosclerosis, but the interwebz seem to say it's the other way around. Shows what I know.

The bp thing is odd. I remember giving blood to the anxiety research people at the Missouri Institute of Psychiatry for anxiety research ( I was a lab tech there doing heroin receptor research summers while in college). They chose me, and my brother because our bp was so low. Not sure they found the magic peptides in our blood. Then a couple years ago I spent the night in the hospital after a bp spike (to 200 / 140) during the day. Nurses woke me up at night because my bp dropped so low in my sleep although oxygen was fine (bp downtown 90 / 40), asked if I ran distance. Not since college anyway. Must be voodoo. Never did get an explanation for the spike.
