So all that Russia crap was a setup for the Chicoms to infect us. Who knew the FEMA camps would be our own homes?

lyle

Willowed:

then coronavirus is God's punishment for Christians

Huh. Right now the highest death toll by far is in inner-city NYC, followed by inner-city Detroit and it’s killing mostly black men with co-morbidities. I’d love to see Venn diagram of the hated Christians and these groups. You?

Captain Hate

Porch, thanks for the response on the prior thread. Someone elsewhere commented that public schools weren't doing online classes and using the excuse that not everyone had a computer but maybe that was disinformation.

Jane

OL,

I answered your question on the prior thread.

Jane

Hopefully all the Dunham news will provide Trump impetus to open us up sooner.

jane,

My ophthalmologist, Dr. Tim Root has his book on-line. You will probably like it. Explains everything eye and does with cartoon's that he himself draws. Yalie and practices here since he is a Daytona native.

Porchlight

That could be true in some places, Cap'n. In our district they sent out surveys to see who needed wifi and devices and distributed Chromebooks and hotspots. That took a couple of weeks, and then they ramped up "classes."

However, they likely never heard from some students/parents. Of course ALL these kids have phones, whether or not they have broadband at home. They're getting the notifications all right.

Funny what happens when you shut down mandatory government schools, huh?

I'm curious: both my brother in MI and me here in CA have gotten emails from our respective dentists announcing provisional office reopening.
Anyone else?
Do dentists have a special comm channel to get notifications before the rest of us?

James,
Dear Valued Patients,
We miss you. We hope this message finds you and your loved ones well and safe during this difficult time.
We want to update you on our tentative re-opening day which may change as guidelines for reopening business are becoming more clear. We are hopeful that we can re-open the office on May 6, 2020. This will only take place if The California Department of Public Health, CDA, and ADA gives us the okay.

Here’s my comment about “immunity passports” that I posted on a friend’s Facebook post:

The basic plan is this: people who are immune from the disease will have civil rights, while people who are not immune will be kept prisoners in their homes and not allowed to work so that their families will starve. The only ways to become immune are to get the disease and recover, or to have a vaccine. We don’t have a vaccine, current guesses for one are 12-18 months. (And the person in charge of getting a vaccine is the same person who has been in charge of getting us an AIDS vaccine for the last 35 years, so don’t think that we will necessarily get a vaccine for this.)

It looks like for healthy working-age people, if you get the virus you have a 50-50 chance of few or no symptoms, and a 99.9% chance of recovering and being just fine whatever your symptoms during the disease. If the choice is 1/10th of 1% of dying from the CCP virus, or 100% dying of starvation, the virus is obviously the way to go. Every rational person who loves their family will immediately seek out a way to get infected with the disease so that they can go back to work and feed their families.

Before the chicken pox vaccine, there were stories of parents who would deliberately expose their children to chicken pox in order to “get it over with” —calling it a “pox party”. But that was in the context of a whole population where most people had already had it and were immune. If we set up a system where the US is going to have the human race’s largest “pox party” then 150 million people will all want to get infected all at once. If the death rate is 0.1%, that’s 150,000 ICU beds we need at the same time.

This whole idea is monstrously stupid, even if it goes exactly to plan!

henry

Miss M, I don’t know what is going to happen tomorrow, aside from you getting 4 inches of fresh snow (with perhaps a half inch here).

Porchlight

I've always liked Dennehy, but I admit I didn't know he was still alive.

Extraneus

What's going to happen when Indiana starts up?

I'll take a stab. There will be civil unrest in still-locked-down states after the first states ease up. People aren't going to stand another six weeks of this, especially when their fellow citizens in other states are back to work.

Porchlight

then 150 million people will all want to get infected all at once.

No. The sheep are already way too scared to do this. They won't even go to a restaurant (once one opens).

He was the leader of the aliens, he told them.
What aliens? That was a nice movie about a bunch of smiling old people.

Robin, eff 'em all

I thought public schools weren't doing online classes. Are they?

you probably heard that from me. Our schools closed in a hurry on March 13. For two weeks the districts around us went directly to remote learning while ours in Ithaca haggled with the teachers' union, ahem, figured out the equity issues. Then teachers got paid to figure out how to deliver mandatory classwork remotely. Finally, this week, they started delivering some instruction and work. We lost a month.

Robin, eff 'em all

And no surprise that Cuomo extended to May 15th. He's negotiating. I've moved to seething deep anger.

Jane,

If they use a laser to reattach things, that fries your lens which produces the cataract. In about a year they will then give you a new one. However, what they don’t mention is that the membrane that holds the lens in place also fogs up. I had to have a hole blown in that, but the hole is as small as possible which gives you the star burst effects at night staring at oncoming headlights. Still way better than all the alternatives.

BTW, I’ve been essentially monocular my whole life. Still raced sporty cars in HS and kollege, and have been a pilot since I was 16. The only thing I was never any good at was stick and ball sports, but I don’t think my proclivities would have leaned that way in any case. Golf might have been ok, but it bores me to death. Oh, and ROTC and Varsity Rifle Team was a slam dunk.

Rocco

That's how I felt too Jane, thinking I'd be better off with one eye. Please don't think I'm complaining, I did this to myself, just trying to convey what it's like for me. There's a good sized blurry round spot in my left eyes vision about the size of a quarter, wherever I focus. I can see peripherally around that blurry spot but using both eyes, that blurry spot is still there and perhaps an eye patch would help. Horizontal lines look like the "flatten the curve" graph.

So McCabe and Rosenstein signed the final renewal knowing it was based on the Steels Dossier that they knew was baloney from the beginning.

By the way, my wife once danced with Brian Dennehy. He was a regular family guy in Suffolk County, Long Island, doing local theater for years before his career took off, and didn't forget the little people, his neighbors once it started to. I think my wife was about 14 at the time. This gets mentioned every time we see him in a movie by one of my in-laws.

This whole idea is monstrously stupid, even if it goes exactly to plan!

EVERYTHING about the government and media response to the coronavirus has been monstrously stupid.

Even granting that extreme measures needed to be taken, they've been designed, communicated and implemented in about as poor a way as can be imagined.

And all the people designing, communicating and implementing them are supposedly "experts" and "the best and the brightest" and most importantly, people who actively sought out the positions of power and responsibility they hold.

Jane

Thanks ManTran and Rocco. I've been wearing a pretend patch all day which is interesting, and even better if I keep the eye in the patch closed.

ManTran did they make you lie face down for days or weeks after the surgery? I keep reading that. It sure as hell won't work for Kiwi, who is already mad at how I look with a patch.

Jane, when my little brother had eye surgery as a kid, they didn't give him a pirate-type eye patch, but an adhesive type that went over your eye and kept it closed.

Jane, go for pirate if that floats your boat! But you might want to have some of the adhesive patches on hand for night time, etc.

Extraneus

As soon as TX opens up, millions of people will want to move there, especially those who don't own their own homes. The state will probably require them to be quarantined for two weeks, which will be a boon to hotels and motels, but after that they're free to rent or buy places to live, get jobs, open businesses, etc. Real estate values will probably rise considerably due to increased demand, and the construction industry will take off. Just my guess.

lurkersusie

Today he’s a Democrat

Extraneus

Food delivery will be required for all the quarantined people as well, helping restaurants come back.

And not just TX, but other states that open up first. States that stay locked-down will experience civil unrest and population loss. People aren't just going to sit around and go broke or starve while there are other places they can go to make a living.
