The greatest city in the world is teetering on the brink so its Mayor seizes the opportunity to remind us he is a useless buffoon:
Covid-19: De Blasio urges US enlistment program for doctors and nurses
-
- Mayor calls for medics to be moved to places in greatest need
- New York City prepares for surge in coronavirus cases
"Enlistment program"?!? WHAT did he say?
New York City’s mayor, Bill de Blasio, has called for a national enlistment program for doctors and nurses, to handle an expected surge in coronavirus cases in New York and across the US.
“If we’re fighting a war, let’s act like we’re fighting a war,” he told reporters on Friday.
...
"...unless the military is fully mobilized and we create something we’ve never had before, which is some kind of national enlistment of medical personnel moved to the most urgent needs in the country constantly … if we don’t have that we’re going to see hospitals simply unable to handle so many people who could be saved.”
OK, that won't be happening. As a minor point, there is no time for Congress to pass the relevant legislation. As a major point, this is still America, we abandoned the draft decades ago, and we don't force people to work at gunpoint.
And how would it work? NY hospitals are short of Protective Personal Equipment. So the Feds are going to threaten to arrest some doctor in Vermont unless he gets down to NY and imperils himself by treating coronavirus patients? And if the good people of the great state of Vermont need health care down the road, NY promises to send their doctor back, unless he's sick or dead or super busy saving New Yorkers in which case, well, that's a problem for another day?
I saw a poignant story of a retired 50-ish nurse from New York. She was planning to answer Gov. Cuomo's call for volunteers but had qualms she lives with two youngsters and her elderly parents. Working with coronavirus patents all day puts her at high risk of infection; going home puts her at risk of infecting her high-risk parents.
Her intention was to respond because Duty Calls, and I applaud her fighting spirit. But I have a hard time imagining a state legislator or judge would agree to lock her up if she chose to sit this one out and take care of her mom and dad.
As a further illustration that desperate times require desperate short-sightedness, this order by Gov. Cuomo is outrageous:
Cuomo said he would sign an executive order that allows the national guard to take ventilators and personal protective equipment from institutions that don’t need them right now, and redistribute them to those that do. He said those institutions would either have their ventilators returned to them or get reimbursements. Cuomo said there may be several hundred ventilators available because of the order.
Right now, the state is fielding a daily need for about 300 additional ventilators, he said. Those ventilators, officials have repeatedly explained, make the difference between life and death.
“Am I willing to deploy the national guard and inconvenience people for several hundred lives? You’re damn right I am,” Cuomo said.
Upstate NY legislators are pushing back. I haven't studied their local budgets and planning process but I imagine some of them are thinking they spent years in investing in appropriate capacity for their town and now, at the moment of crisis, its being taken away by people who couldn't plan far enough ahead to buy hot dogs for the Fourth of July.
As to the idea that they'll will get it back if they need it - oh, stop. NYC won't start unhooking people and letting them die just to return ventilators to some upstate burg. The absence of trust makes sharing difficult and this brute expropriation outrageous.
Apparently they won't take more than 20% of the ventilators from any hospital, so the plan isn't fully insane.
Some pushback from the Rochester area upstate:
Rochester Regional Health deferred questions to Monroe County. Both County Executive Adam Bello and U.S. Rep. Joseph Morelle, D-Irondequoit, expressed concerned over Cuomo's executive order.
"While it’s reasonable to share resources across communities when available, the reality is that Monroe County’s positive cases, hospitalizations, and ventilator usage increase daily," Bello said in a statement. "We do not have excess capacity to send supplies out of the region.”
Morelle echoed those sentiments.
"Unfortunately, our regional health systems have repeatedly indicated that excess ventilator capacity does not exist at this time," Morelle offered in a statement.
Rich Azzopardi, senior advisor to Cuomo, said, "...it is essential that we all work together."
He continued, "Ventilators literally save lives. They will be returned or reimbursed to those hospitals. Moreover, when the pandemic wave hits upstate New York, the Governor will ask downstate hospitals for similar help."
I guess Gov. Cuomo's message is "tough luck".
More pushback from Erie County Republicans:
We cannot allow the state to confiscate our public health resources by force and redistribute them to New York City. The offer to pay for them only adds insult to injury. Once they are taken, we will not get them back when we need them, and clearly none are available for purchase. We want to help, but if we hit our peak while our resources are elsewhere, Erie County residents will die. We cannot let that happen.”
No trust.
First!

Indianapolis is on I-65 between Chicago and Louisville, with a branch off to Cincinnati on I-69. This does NOT include I-70, which includes a route to St. Louis. All of those cities are trending to be hot spots.
There is a reason we are called The Crossroads of America.
Posted by: MissMarple2 | April 03, 2020 at 10:21 PM
It would be interesting to know, MM. The numbers of patients rolling through one of the larger hospitals here has been steady but with very low positives. I am told that about 15 of the 70 or so scared patients are held for suspicion of Covid. That has been the daily average for about 2 weeks. Of those numbers there was one Covid positive 2 weeks ago and another two days ago. The rest had other ailments but were fortunate to receive immediate acute care because they were admitted mistakenly for Covid.

Catching up, from the last thread:
Our all-knowing political masters have decided to keep airports open, the subways (Petri dish inside of a Petri dish) & buses operating, trains moving, etc. That's our "scientific" approach.
All those nurses, lab technicians, and even doctors need a way to get to work. The subway is the least dangerous part of the day. The friend I mentioned in the last thread going back to her job as a lab tech will commute from the far end of Brooklyn to Manhattan.
I agree with Ext about letting young people go back to work. As I said last week, they could have spent $1 trillion on hospitals so the vulnerable who got infected could get care.

The only thing that mattered about the last episode is who Number 1 was.
On the surface it was a series about secret agent man being squeezed for info. On a second level it was a commentary on society.
But at the most basic level it had almost a Christian message. He wasn't imprisoned by MI5 or 6 nor the Russkies.
He was a prisoner of himself, just as we are all prisoners of our natures.
It was hinted at throughout the series. As one commenter noted, every time he asked "Who is number 1"? The answer was always "You are number 6". But put a comma in there after "are" and the answer at the end of the last episode was in almost all the others.

That's weird... I accidentally posted this on the dead thread, and I've pasted it in and posted it twice. Both times it showed as posted and then disappeared on refresh. Oh, well, I've been lucky that it hasn't happened before...
Let's try again:
For all of you people who are thinking that you want to use blood tests to test which people have already had the virus and let them get back to work -- so what are the legal ramifications of discriminating against people as a result of their blood tests? Seems to me that your antibody test would be protected under HIPPAA.
And think of the perverse incentives: if I've never been infected, I can't work. If I'm a 30-40-something-no-comorbidities parent with a family depending upon my earnings, and I deliberately expose myself to the virus, I've probably got a 99.9% chance of having none-to-mild symptoms and then I can go back to work and support my family. If 50,000,000 such people make that decision simultaneously, then that's 50,000 ventilators that we need all at once.
The anti-vaxers tell the stories of "chicken pox parties" where people would take their kids over to a house where a kid had the chicken pox so that they could all get infected and "get it over with." If you think about it, New Yorkers turning out en mass for the Lunar New Year celebrations in Chinatown was their version of a "chicken pox party" and we're now in the midst of seeing how that has turned out.

Worldometers look see
Total US cases 277,475, new cases 32,102, %change 13.0%, deaths 7,402, recovered 12,283.
The recovered number is still moving up nicely. It doesn't capture the people who got a mild case and were never tested. We don't know how to capture that number yet. Well, we do, but we haven't started large-scale antibody tests yet.
While HIPPA rules might prevent others from revealing your test result, there is nothing illegal about self-disclosure. If they could get you a printed result that showed you had the antibody you could use that like a passport. Counterfeiting might become an issue.
Lately it's pretty easy to estimate the next day's new cases. Last night I estimated ~32,200+ and it came in at 32,102. Multiply the new cases by the new %change+1. 32,102 X 1.13 = 36,275. The %change has decreased over the last 8-9 days, so under count slightly. I'm working on 2AM numbers so tomorrow I expect to see ~36,000+ cases by 2AM. A few less by midnight if you're not up as late as I am.
NY % of all cases moved from 37.9% to 42.1%, NJ moved from 10.4% to 12.1%. The bi-state area moved from 48.3% to 54.2% in one day. The bi-state area surged or the other 48 states ebbed. I can't say which with the numbers I'm looking at.
recap
date total cases new cases %change
4/1 215,300 26,708 +14.1%
4/2 245,373 30,073 +13.9%
4/3 277,475 32,102 +13.0%
I still believe under the current testing regime that we are capturing the most severe cases, that the testing results backlog still exists and that we are capturing none of the mild or asymptomatic cases.
That makes the fatality rates look more dangerous than what the unknown actual rate is.

Something weird is going on with the French statistics.
WHO had 60,393 total French cases Thursday. Johns Hopkins is now showing 83,029 French cases. I had predicted that France would pass the bogus China tally in 5-6 days yesterday. Overnight instead?
I'm gobsmacked. Maybe that's an error at Johns Hopkins that they will correct. If that is an accurate number then France found 22,000+ new cases in a day?
I found the reason for the jump.

My ISP is acting up and I am having trouble posting. I may give up.

France was keeping two different tallies and combined them.
Germany with its typical Teutonic efficiency. Italy, such friendly people with an incompetent government.
France with its typical DeGaulle-era lies continues. Macron didn't know about this?

Effective in 20 days. Placed on administrative leave until then. He's gone. Moar please.
If people are distracted by Covid-19 Trump should axe as many people as he can. As fast as he can.

PIN,
I could do without the broadcast and cable news for 30 days and still be well informed, but we really do need them to keep going for another 30 days so that they lose all credibility moving forward.
Without realizing what they are doing, they are revealing people like Cuomo and deBlasio as clueless tinpot dictators. That archived news tape will be useful in the future.
I didn't vote for NJ Gov. Phil Murphy, and I've made fun of him before, but he does a much more measured press conference than Gov. Cuomo does.
A couple of days ago he mentioned the coordination they were trying to achieve here and said they may have to move some in-state ventilators around.
Nothing about seizures or the National Guard, as Cuomo would days later imply.
Cuomo and deBlasio can argue for expedited ventilators and Trump can say NJ needs them too.
