The Week in Pictures: The Great Hunkering Edition

Interesting recount of past epidemics.

Glad we live in an age where we don’t need “night soil men”.

https://www.smithsonianmag.com/history/how-epidemics-past-forced-americans-promote-health-ended-up-improving-life-this-country-180974555/?utm_source=pocket-newtab

My maternal grandmother was an RN who supervised the nursing staff in a TB hospital pre WWII. She was a germ drill sergeant.

I learned all about washing my hands from her:)

My oldest aunt was much like her. She ended up with a doctorate in nursing and taught nursing in Boston.

She was an Army officer during WWII in Wash DC with a high level responsibility in the Army Nurse Corps.

Hope I learned enough from them to stay healthy.

Buckeye

I think Trump’s firing of Atkinson is a shot across Schiff and Pelosi’s bow.

Buckeye

Eggs are in short supply but milk is plentiful.

Yesterday I bought 1/2 gallon for fifty cents, no limit on quantity.

A'mom's comment on garlic made me laugh as I told Red several times that no vampire could survive in our household these days with how often I use garlic, including last night's turkey chipotle chili with white beans. Anyone else notice that turkey is easier to get than other poultry these days?

Have made several stocks from turkey wings.

Also has anyone else seen the recommendations that with the 8 week ticking clock closed businesses would be better off taking out PPP loan closer to time they aspire to reopen than as soon as they can get it?

rse

https://victorygirlsblog.com/essential-means-different-things-to-different-people/ is up for an amen chorus.

Another Bob

“I think Trump’s firing of Atkinson is a shot across Schiff and Pelosi’s bow.”

I think it’s just a small punishment. Trump has demonstrated no ability to (or interest in?) getting to this set of enemies. And the current crisis will cost him another 2-3 years.

Manuel Transmission

Anyone heard from Hoyden in the last 2-3 weeks? Hope everything is ok.

Extraneus

Sundance reminds us that the fired IC IG coup plotter Atkinson was responsible for FISA "accuracy reviews" in his previous position as senior counsel in the FBI's National Security Division (where he reported to Mary McCord, who is probably the Schiff staffer who worked with Ciaramella on the whistleblower complaint), and that DoJ IG Horowitz's just-released interim report found that only 3 of 42 reviewed FISA applications were compliant.

After all the caterwauling from the other coup plotters, this justification for Atkinson's firing will be thrown in their faces, hopefully at a televised House Intelligence Committee hearing if Schiff is dumb enough to hold one over it.

https://theconservativetreehouse.com/2020/04/03/president-trump-removes-coup-plotter-icig-michael-atkinson-effective-30-days-from-today-dc-media-conscripts-go-bananas/

Old Lurker

A-bob. "Trump has demonstrated no ability to (or interest in?) getting to this set of enemies."

I posited a couple of years ago that "no interest in" is the best explanation among the several choices.

Still do. And that does have an impact on my otherwise enthusiastic support for him and MAGA.

Buckeye

Anyone heard from Hoyden in the last 2-3 weeks? Hope everything is ok.

I was thinking the same thing this morning. Maybe she hopped in Athena for a tour of the country. What is avgas at?

James D.

Well, I think we have a definitive answer on whether Captain Crozier was right or wrong.

The NYT saw fit to print an op ed praising him in glowing terms. If the NYT’s editors think he was right, then it’s pretty clear he was 100% in the wrong.

Old Lurker

We should compile a list of our 70+ regulars and keep an eye out for them.

“The models show hundreds of thousands of people are going to die and you know what I want to do? I want to come way under the model,” Trump said.

“The professionals did the models. I was never involved in a model. At least this kind of a model,” he added.

jimmy, jimmy, jimmy--
solutions are only as good as their assumptions/presumptions.

As I said last week, they could have spent $1 trillion on hospitals so the vulnerable who got infected could get care.

One thing you seem to have missed here--
your staffing plan for those brand new hospitals is??
(The subject pretty much of TM's post here.)
Medical staff all over the world seem pretty much spoken for right now.

You and your colleagues from the university going to volunteer? You all do lots of intubations and arterial lines there? Manage lots of ventilator cases between teaching your classes? (We just make it look easy. It takes us years to get slick. That residency thing that persists.)

James D.

Rse @ 8:01

I’ll say amen to that article you linked.

And, my god, the arrogance of that judge quoted in the piece - there’s someone who needs to never be within a thousand miles of any position of power over his fellow citizens ever again.

Old Lurker

Hey James, I was thinking. For the good of the country a few years ago, you, me, Janet and Clarice were willing to have DC nuked.

Shouldn't we be willing to sacrifice Jimmy so we can erase NYC (before July 1 when my kids move there)?

Jane

Buckeye,

I think Atkinson
S firing was a suggestion from his new chief of staff!

Another Bob

70+ OL? I never counted, but wouldn’t have thought the number was that high.

Another Bob

Oh, never mind. 70+ year-old regulars.

Buckeye

We should compile a list of our 70+ regulars and keep an eye out for them.

I think we need a list for when the shooting starts.

Melinda

Atkinson was the NatSec atty of the DoJ that signed off on the FISA applications truthiness. The ones with the 93% fail rate, before he took the ICIG gig and OK'd Vindman's fears as "Valid".

Not incompetent when malice is used.

Another Bob

“ I think we need a list for when the shooting starts.”

Of our 70+ year old regulars???

;)

jimmyk

One thing you seem to have missed here--
your staffing plan for those brand new hospitals is??

I didn't say anything about new hospitals. Neither you nor I think the numbers of hospital beds needed are going to explode if we let younger and healthier people go on with their lives, while focusing on isolating the vulnerable. But $1 trillion can get a lot of PPE, vents, etc. which have been reported as the main bottlenecks.

Though it makes for a potentially interesting question.

If you could (let’s not say “shoot”) eliminate three people from all influence and effect of society, who?

sbwaters

AB, that presumes some members of this blog have an effect on society.

;-)

[Oh, C'mon! It's a self-depreciating joke!]

James D. - reading about that judge, I had the immediate flash that that might be the beginning of the preference cascade that launches CW2.0. If a conservative popped that worthless POS and that led to another POS getting popped, etc. ... our collective short fuses might just say fukkum. We’re tired of this shit. Anybody else want a piece? It’s not like our lists aren’t getting longer, or anything.

CNN: Grieving widow describes final moments with her husband over Facetime as he died of coronavirus

The guy was 42 and supposedly nad no pre-existing conditions. Yesterday we saw CDC data indicating that 2% of those who tested positive with no pre-existing conditions required ICU, but the data wasn't broken out by age group. Has anyone seen such a breakout?

Marlene

Good Morning! MM posted Markos Moulitas' twitter last night. Vomitous. It so happens that I had a meltdown last night because my sister-in-law called and asked what is Daily Kos?! She is apolitical. Another sister-in-law had sent her an article from Daily Kos filled filled with vile and venom. The sister-in-law who sent the article has been making snide remarks in sibling group texts and I've about had it with her. I told hubby I was going to send a group text and give her a piece of mind. I was so upset. This isn't the time to get into political fights, especially with family. I still think I'll compose a *sweet and innocent* text and send it,ha.

Buckeye

Though it makes for a potentially interesting question.

If you could (let’s not say “shoot”) eliminate three people from all influence and effect of society, who?

Top of my list would be Soros.

Another Bob

So what’s the non-nuts interpretation?

Buckeye

I’m just happy I’m under 70:)

Parents may find this interesting. https://www.edsurge.com/news/2020-04-02-what-students-are-doing-is-remote-learning-not-online-learning-there-s-a-difference

James D.

Top of my list would be Soros.

I’d probably include him, too.

Maybe Bezos or Gates. Except their billions would still be there and their heirs and inner circle are just as committed to prog madness as they are.

I honesty don’t know who my three would be. It would have to be someone who’s not just horrible but also supremely good at using their resources to push society the wrong way.

Jim Eagle

Buckeye picks Soros. I pick Schiff. One more? Perhaps Pelosi?

Old Lurker

Jimmy "But $1 trillion can get"

Jimmy's point (right Jimmy?) really is that before you rush out (of your closed room) and declare your decision to spend $2+++T of OPM and shut down the lives of every person in the country on one immutable "thing", perhaps a good discussion and cost v benefit analysis might conclude that perhaps less could do more, or the same amount spent elsewhere might do much more or perhaps even spending nothing was the right answer all along.

The $1T on hospitals was not a literal example.

Another Bob

IMO, Schiff and Pelosi are mere errand boys. Think bigger.

Buckeye

One problem with filling Fed emergency hospitals are the Docs who have an association with a “normal” hospital.

Particularly if they are either paid directly or indirectly by the hospital.

Old Lurker

The more fun question is if you could have erased any three people from the last 100 years, who might they be?

Wilson...FDR...?

Another Bob

The question is more “Eliminating what three people from positions of ANY influence would represent the biggest net improvement in society?

Extraneus

Also, the CDC data didn't include the % of deaths, which you'd think would be relevant to such an analysis.

What percentage of people who go to the ICU survive? 50%? If so, then 1% of all who test positive for the virus with no pre-existing conditions die from it.

Since we can assume that some people who got the virus and got over it weren't tested, this is a worst-case number and the reality is something less than 1%, as Jimmy pointed out yesterday, and maybe a lot less.

So what's the percentage of deaths for those in their 40s who get the virus with no pre-existing conditions? That seems like a very important question that can be answered with existing data, even if the answer is a worst-case number that doesn't count asymptomatic or otherwise untested people.

Old Lurker

Buckeye, and as you know, those hospitals often provide the malpractice insurance of the docs working there. Not a small consideration.

Melinda

I would of course expect France to be the one Permanent Member of the committee, but here's "the List" but I might not have the right one. It looks too short.

jimmyk

Yes, OL, I was pulling a number out of a hat, but that was the general point I was making. It does presume, as I added, that letting healthy people under, say, 50, go back to work won't lead to a huge increase in hospitalizations and ICU patients.

Melinda

Moar judge election "Clarity" in Wisconsin, Don't report the results until ALLLLLL the absentee ballots are in and counted."

Manuel Transmission

As much as you guys are identifying the obvious punks that deserve a long walk over a short pier (on my list, too), I think you are missing the actual preference cascade mechanism. That no-name judge is the weak wildebeest at the back of the herd. Some local jamoke, maybe living next door decides he thinks the world needs open Hobby Lobbys more than it needs that worthless judge. Then another jamoke sees that as not too big a deal, given the dire straits we are all in and picks his straggler. Maybe that (fake) cop that arrested OL’s neighbor. See how that works? Not a seven days in May grand scheme.

jimmyk

Also, as staffing goes, I wonder how many trained nurses are not in the labor force now. That's the kind of profession where it wouldn't surprise me if large number of women drop out to have children, or are retired. $1 trillion can pay for a lot of them to come back to the labor force. Of course that's where closing the schools might not have been such a brilliant idea.

Narciso

That was a bug or a feature with obamacare.

But if living or dead, it would have to be Mao, Lenin, and Stephen King.

Old Lurker

Here's a puzzler: I think it was sbw who had recommended healthyairmask.com as a source for masks. I picked up a couple masks from them at the end of February. They stocked out within a day or two. I went back to their website today, and it's disappeared. They still have a FB page: https://www.facebook.com/pg/HealthyAirMask/posts/ but no activity on it since December.

Hard to believe a company in that business would fail or go dark right now.

Federal, state, and local governments are spending trillions of dollars to combat the new coronavirus pandemic. But as government agencies and officials work urgently to respond to this crisis of unprecedented scope, they also have an extraordinary opportunity to ensure that programs born of an emergency can achieve measurable outcomes that strengthen our social infrastructure for decades to come.

This is true for philanthropy and impact investors, too. Many donors and foundations are reacting generously to provide aid to those most affected by this crisis. Some impact investors, for example, are providing zero percent bridge loans to nonprofits, and some corporate philanthropies are supporting small businesses. These funders have an opportunity to think beyond immediate challenges and give policymakers the support needed to achieve long-term impact.

Vulnerable people have been the first to suffer from the pandemic, and they will be the last to recover. But in this moment of crisis, we can lay the foundation for a more equitable future. Pay for success offers unique opportunities to increase public accountability, while unleashing the entrepreneurialism of the social sector. Governments, service providers, philanthropists, and impact investors can harness the principles of PFS to steer this unprecedented emergency spending toward catalyzing enduring improvements in the lives of society’s least well off.

Tell me all you want about models and ending at under 1% mortality rate. Right now 5+% is the global Mortality rate. 1,099,000 cases 58,900 dead. In the USA it’s at 2.5% 277,000 cases and 7,400+ dead. #Mafffff says we better figure something out soon or hope summer helps 🇺🇸🤷🏻‍♂️

A model is molding the information imputed into it. And we are constantly reminded about the lack of tests. Then how can they have a death rate percentage when they don’t have a accurate number of infected people. Any calculation without the total is not math. It’s a guess!

My wife works in the surgical daycare unit which involves a lot of elective surgeries most of which are now cancelled. And because a couple of testing sites in a couple of surrounding towns were closed down recently, we've had an increase in testing since they're sending everyone to my wifes hospital. She said two nurses swabbed 96 people yesterday, one of which flipped out when the nurse swabbed him and gave him a pretty good bloody nose. I guess he went off on the nurse using all kinds of profanity and she felt terrible. But that swab has to go really deep into the nasal cavity and she must have hit a vein. So the guy goes to the ER and they tell him he has a bloody nose. Now the nurse doesn't want to swab anymore.
