How bad is Pittsburgh getting hit?

Another Bob, we're not there and don't get to hear from our daughter nearly enough; her hours are all over the place, so we generally leave messages and wait until she gets time to call. She suggested a zoom thing, but I haven't looked into it yet. Overall, Pennsylvania had a recent spike and the "peak" date has been pushed back about five days, to April 17th.

Let's be clear about what's going on:

Republicans are trying to replenish the Paycheck Protection Program before funds run out.

But Dems are holding the program hostage to their unrelated left-wing agenda.

RT to tell Dems to quit blocking relief for workers & small businesses.

The Michigan seed ban is jaw-droppingly stupid, aside from all the other things wrong with it.

Our Democrat Governor seems to be the exception that proves the rule. He's issued relatively few, non-Draconian Executive Orders, several of which are aimed at helping people survive the restrictions rather than imposing more. Aside from school & restaurant closures we've got a mandatory stay-at-home order "except to visit essential businesses, to exercise outdoors or to help a family member," gatherings limited to 10 people, 6 foot distancing, and that's pretty much it for individual citizens.

I suppose all that could change, but when I look at deaths per million (9 vs New York's 440) we seem to be in the bottom quintile of states, so far, which suggests no compelling reason to tighten things up further.

The #PaycheckProtectionProgram is a lifeline for small businesses on Main Street across America.

Congress must urgently pass additional funding for this bipartisan, job-saving program.

There’s no time to waste. Small businesses need our help – and they need it NOW.

Small business layoffs spiked 1,000% last month. 10% of the U.S. workforce is now jobless. This is no time for political games.

I hope Democrats stop blocking more funding for the Paycheck Protection Program very soon. American jobs depend on it.

The Paycheck Protection Program has been so successful for America’s small businesses that it is projected to run out of money in a matter of DAYS. Millions more could lose their jobs and their livelihood.

Democrats don’t care.

RFK Jr has a warning

Why are OG villains like #PaulOffitt and #PeterHotez, the world's top #vaccine promoters, frantically warning us about the unique and frightening dangers inherent in developing a #coronavirus vaccine?

You know, Democrats clearly dob't give a damn about what people think when they blatantly hold up legislation in order to pack it with otherwise unwinnable liberal policies and pork. I wish Republicans were less concerned about PR effects and more willing to draw some of their own lines in the sand. At this point I'm reduced to hoping we win back the House and have a chance to undo some of the damage they're managing to inflict. I must say, however, that Trump does not seem averse to spending big bucks, so who knows. Will Congress ever step up to the plate and do their jobs?

Interview with President Trump and Jeanine Pirrom at link.

Stephanie Nene Not Your Normal Granma

Republican Governor Kristi Noem (actual quote):

"Our constitution ensures that the citizen's right is protected. I agree with the role of our government as set forth in our state and in our national constitution. The people themselves are primarily responsible for their safety. They are the ones that are entrusted with expansive freedoms. They're free to exercise their rights to work, to worship, and to play. Or to even stay at home, or to conduct social distancing."

Democrat Governor Gretchen Whitmer (paraphrased from the official order):

"When I issue a 'stay at home' order, I mean it. You can't go you your vacation home, a vacation rental or for that matter, next door without the state's permission or we'll fine you $1000. You just can't be trusted to do the right thing no matter what any damned Constitution says."

Dr. Floyd Ferris, Director of the State Science Institute, (Atlas Shrugged):

“Did you really think that we want those laws to be observed?” said Dr. Ferris. “We want them broken. You’d better get it straight that it’s not a bunch of boy scouts you’re up against—then you’ll know that this is not the age for beautiful gestures. We’re after power and we mean it.

You fellows were pikers, but we know the real trick, and you’d better get wise to it. There’s no way to rule innocent men. The only power any government has is the power to crack down on criminals. Well, when there aren’t enough criminals, one makes them. One declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible for men to live without breaking laws. Who wants a nation of law-abiding citizens? What’s there in that for anyone? But just pass the kind of laws that can neither be observed nor enforced nor objectively interpreted—and you create a nation of law-breakers—and then you cash in on guilt. Now that’s the system, Mr. Rearden, that’s the game, and once you understand it, you’ll be much easier to deal with.”

We had a family owned one for 30 years but they were taken over by Ace Hardware.
Really hope you will post more often and I agree about the Stay Safe recommendation. Never say it.
I find peace in being outdoors and I find as I wait in 6 ft. apart lines I pray more.Wear a mask in stores and FaceTime with my girlfriends, one who is in assisted living and in lockdown.
Look out for my brother who lives alone and just got finished watching the last half of the Wizard of Oz.

Regards this Michigan governess...

If you look at the maps, this is clearly a reaction to caseload in Detroit. So why not set up a travel ban in Wayne County?

No, this is her inner fascist coming out.

Heads. Pikes.

JM Hanes

That Fox News Story ("Simulation research shows COVID-19 can spread farther by those exercising outdoors") seems pretty sketchy to me. All emphasis below is mine.

“The droplets that are exhaled by somebody – even if the person coughs or sneezes, but just exhaling is enough,” said Bert Blocken, a civil engineering professor at Eindhoven University in the Netherlands.
Seems to me there are pretty significant differences between the two, probably in size as well as propulsion.
They found when someone is walking, running, or cycling, a vacuum or a slipstream is created, which could cause respiratory droplets to spread much farther than the prescribed six feet of social distancing.
The engineering part seems routine enough, but their description of their "simulation" doesn't exactly sound anything remotely like rigorous science to me:
[T[hey used software to scan bodies of runners, cyclists, and walkers, and let droplets escape from their mouths as if they were breathing.
I'm sensing layers upon layers of assumptions. They're probably responsible for which ever Gov ordered people to stop exercising outdoors. Not like he could just order people to wear masks when jogging. Oh wait. We can be ordered to do or not do anything now.

Yes Gus, it seems strange to not be present at church tomorrow.
I am going to watch it in tv.
Will have a Zoom call with my extended family at 4:00 tomorrow.
Blessed Easter to you ,Mrs Gus and your wonderful son!

JM HANES, that was a GREAT POST. The LEFT, is in HOG LEFTARD FULL COMMIE heaven. It's LOOTING 101.
Generally speaking LIBTARD FULL COMMIES are all in on ANY POLICY, that is giving THEM FREE SHIT. For the most part again, THE FULL COMMIE LEFT, simply does not RESPECT UNDERSTAND, nor do they BELIEVE in the CONSTITUTION nor the RULE OF LAW in any form,
I'll repeat that...The FULL COMMIE LIBTARD LEFT has no respect for the U.S.CONSTITUTION, nor do they in any way know it nor UNDERSTAND IT. Conservatives, such as we are, cannot debate nor discuss issues that have to do with our CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS, when those we seek to make understandings with, HAVE NO CLUE or NO INTENTION to be HONEST or INFORMED in any discussion.

For those of you who glance at flight trackers, the amount of transatlantic traffic is mind-boggling. Maybe 10% of typical, maybe less.

Ignatz Ratzkiwatzki

--If you look at the maps, this is clearly a reaction to caseload in Detroit. So why not set up a travel ban in Wayne County?--

That is a brilliant idea. :)
Our county had three cases for a couple of weeks. Then about a week ago suddenly we had 7. Of the four new ones, one was from local community spread. The other three from goofs traveling to some pest hole and then coming back with it or, alternately some pest from a pest hole coming here.

That's the question. The GOP dunces got booted in 2018 for not doing a fucking thing and the shampeachment donks deserve the same treatment. Maybe if that happens, things will change. Kevin McCarthy seems to be saying the right things...

From Instapundit:

Boston suburb’s coronavirus order: Only walk against traffic. “On [one] street in the city of Beverly, you have to walk this way: Against traffic, or you could face a fine. The Beverly Board of Health is ordering people on Lothrop Street only to walk on the side of the road opposite the direction that cars are going.”

Now this is just one street in Beverly, but I got a real LOL kick out of imagining the effect of such an order in Boston. No telling where you could end up if you complied!

Captain Hate

He's as dumb as a plank but amom has warned us that there's no AIDS vaccine and expecting one for COVID19 might be placing our eggs in a very leaky basket. If the drug that the Children of the Cornhole reject because ORANGEMANBAD works on sane individuals, why not deal with it that way? If we lose some dumbasses along the way...

MM, Maggie has been such a good dog! I'm so sorry! We lost our collie and corgi (13 years each) last year and are only now looking into new dogs, because we miss our girls so much...but you have to do the right thing.

Re Nabokov: I very much recommend Nabokov's Lectures on Literature, from when he lectured at Wellesley and Cornell in the late 40s and early 50s--great enthralling entrances into Austen, Proust, Flaubert and more--he loved seeing and showing complex structures and there are a lot of maps and charts. https://www.amazon.com/Lectures-Literature-Vladimir-Nabokov/dp/0156027755

Crack down on Coronavirus rules banning church services? DOJ says: ‘Expect action’ on government regulation of religious services amid COVID-19 outbreak

I am not a scientist but I did stay at a Holiday inn Express--well no I didn't because they are all closed.
In any event it seems to unsophisticated me that the places with the worst outbreaks of the epidemic are the places where the ordinary course of life, and the well-intentioned shelter-in-place orders, engendered and/or required everyone to stay in close proximity to one or more people without fresh air for an extended period of time--Wuhan, Italy, Spain, NYC.
My intuitive sense tells me that this is not healthy--that it is a good thing to get outside, away from the concentrated air we breath and expel in our enclosed spaces, away from the aggregate accumulating virus that builds upon itself. The people getting horribly ill--including our very brave and heroic medical people-do not seem to be getting sick from casual exposure, such as having a jogger exhale within 6 feet, but from repeated, concentrated exposure in very close proximity.
It is obviously true that the spread of the virus depends on people having casual contact with multiple other individuals. But this is inevitable, and that barn door has been open for a long time.
I guess my point is that ordering everyone to be shut up indoors seems intuitively like a recipe for absolute disaster, and that the minimal benefit of potentially preventing/slowing the dispersion of the virus through casual contact is a fool's errand.
(My understanding of this Osterholm guy is that he believes the same; his cowardice in not forcefully stating this publicly while at the same time whining about a lack of "leadership" in government is why I am so disgusted with him)

A Carlos Osweda thread, well worth reading.

"i've got a rant but i'll unload it in the small hours of the morning when i can't sleep."

I completely agree BOAT. Unfortunately for me, I am educated. But that means nothing compared to mine (your) intuition. I recognize a lying hack/phony from a mile away. I also recognize a FOOL and a DIMWIT from the same distance. One thing I'd like to share, is that....GOVERNMENT HACK BUREAUCRATS, regardless of DEGREES nor CREDENTIALS, are NOT smarter than you nor me. If they were that bright and smart, they wouldn't work for the GOVERNMENT. They are weak and cowards.

That was my intro to Nabokov and I've never looked back. A member of the Horde's mother took at least one class from him at Cornell and still has her notebooks from the class. I'm so envious even though it would've been completely lost on me at the time...

He has his weird subjective likes and dislikes. He hated Conrad which was surely a Rooski versus Polski thing. And thought Dostoyevsky was a fucking lowlife (that his uncle was in charge of the prison camp that faked his execution by firing squad may have been influential) who often wrote on the fly to pay off gambling debts (read The Idiot and tell me different particularly on the transitions from book to book). But he's dead solid perfect on Tolstoy and Gogol.

Heading to bed.

If I miss you tomorrow, Happy Easter!

Good night, everyone!

I know you’ve been talking about county-level granularity in actions forever Ig.

It might have been 100% propaganda, but I saw video of Chinese authorities dumping trucks of dirt on freeways to close them. If we were in “prevent spread uber alles” mode, why didn’t that happen?

WCVD 107.7 “The Boned” plague weekend, 7th caller gets a roll of Charmin:

Bruce Dickinson-Tattooed Millionaire https://youtu.be/DdpMx0-AlDs

Since Catsmeat is around... A while back I mentioned plague literature, including Manzoni's "The Betrothed," which I'm embarrassed to admit I'd barely heard of, though it's considered one of the greats of world literature. So I started it, and I'm really enjoying it so far. He's a great storyteller, but he also injects astute observations about social dynamics circa 1620, as well as about the psychology of his characters. And he has a witty, engaging style. Available free online (Gutenberg).

I figure if I'm going to be shut in, may as well explore some great literature.

At the height of a supposed pandemic with people locked in their homes DiBlasio and Cuomo were [are] still packing people into subways like sardines?
jimmyk, peter, anyone is that accurate?

Iggy, 9:56: Here's my idea! Instead of statewide shelter in place, let's go with shelter in County.
AND, only lock down counties with large numbers of cases. Let the other counties breathe.

Whatdya think?

Incidentally, I'd mainly heard of Manzoni because he was one of the leaders of the Italian "risorgimento" in the 1860s, was a pal of Verdi's, and Verdi's Requiem was composed in his honor after his death in 1873. There's also an opera based on "The Betrothed" ("I Promessi Sposi") by Ponchielli (of "Dance of the Hours" aka "Hello Muddah, Hello Faddah" fame), though not very widely performed.

Bruce Dickinson is a jet pilot like John Travolta but he doesn’t rape kids.

--He's as dumb as a plank but amom has warned us that there's no AIDS vaccine --

Well, HIV is a very different virus than SARS 2. It's a DNA virus as opposed to an RNA virus so apples to oranges.
So that sounds encouraging right?
There is no SARS 1 vaccine = 17 years;
Nor a MERS vaccine = 8 years;
and they're both very similar to SARS 2.
17 year lockdown anyone? Probably doesn't sound too bad to Bill Gates.

jimmyk, peter, anyone is that accurate?

I doubt it, really. I haven't been in a subway since mid-March, but I've heard they're relatively empty, even in rush hour--maybe 10 or 12 people in a car (as opposed to the usual 100). Maybe on occasion they get like that picture but I doubt that is typical. I'm going to speculate that photo was taken mid-March.

Also, NYC's numbers have flattened out as have NY State's.

They get $3K per head--their generous salaries are in danger.

Ignatz Ratzkiwatzki

Dammit, Jim. Brilliant.:)
But I mean really it's not. It's just common sense, which probably explains why no politician has thought of it.

There is no SARS 1 vaccine = 17 years;

I thought I read that there's no SARS 1 vaccine because once the pandemic subsided so completely, they research on it was abandoned. So that might not be the case with this one, though I'm still optimistic it will be greatly mitigated by treatments long before there's a vaccine.

My NYC daughter is not riding the subway anymore so she doesn't have first hand knowledge. But when asked about crowded subways she said they've reduced the schedules a lot.
Maybe in anticipation of lower ridership or sickness among train crews. She said occasional crowded subways are explained by that. If you have to get somewhere you don't have choices so people bunch up.

My wifes Mother..."Sue", is near the end. Most of you have probably heard or have been wonderful to me, my WIFE, and my BELOVED 19 YEAR OLD SON. She is near the end, and she has not been able to eat or drink anything.
Today, the doctors diagnosed a bowel obstruction as cancerous. My beautiful and lovely wife, will be devastated. I cried Thursday with my wife, and I tried my best to comfort her. I love her Mom very much. Please pray for Susan and my wife Karen. This is extemely hard right now.

For MI, I can see why they can't isolate Wayne County. It would be perceived as a racial thing not a health thing.

In CA that's not so stark. But I can see that in my neck of the woods a bunch of towns with populations of 50k to 150k have case numbers like 30 or 50 or 70. Whereas San Jose, population 1 million has 1000 cases.
That's roughly double the expected number and I would be unsurprised to learn that there are some lower income Hispanic neighborhoods being hit hard. I don't know that for a fact so maybe it's just white bias.
But for the overall county the ethnicity of Hispanics is given as 25% while the case numbers are broken out as 35% Hispanic

Captain Hate

Prayers up, Gus.

Well, HIV is a very different virus than SARS 2. It's a DNA virus as opposed to an RNA virus so apples to oranges.

The HIV virus is an RNA virus. It's a retrovirus, so it uses an enzyme, reverse transcriptase, to transcribe its genome into DNA, which gets incorporated into the cells' DNA.

I've been doing Walmart pickups for several months. During the pandemic they have had to cut pickup times, I think they were missing some staff and also staff were spending more time inside the store restocking nightly and disinfecting.

Just this week they have started offering more slots again. It's a terrific service. You can choose to allow substitutions or not. I have never had a mistaken item on my order or a missing item unless out of stock. You get an email if an item is not available or if they substituted. Highly recommend!
