The whole school year, so not the summer, and she came home for Christmas break. She loved St Petersburg, though I remember her saying that when she'd walk to school in the morning (she rented a room in a woman's house) it was a common sight to see drunken men carrying cans of vodka, or passed out in the street, on their way home from bars. Also, she traveled, and had horror stories from Siberia and Moscow forays.

Didn't SCOTUS decide that that was a valid application of the Commerce Clause way back when? Illegal to grow (certain) foods on your own land for your own use by your own family.

A bad decision for sure, but it has nothing to do with what a governor can or can't do. It only applies to what the commerce clause allows the federal government to do.

MJW...there you go reading my posts with too powerful a magnifying glass again.

Of course you are technically correct. Flunk me on the bar exam if you must.

My point as you know, and as the other readers know, was about government interference with individual freedoms on even small things that one would think were none of the governments' business...and I used that example to illustrate that this has been going on for many decades.

But sure, Feds are Feds and Governors aren't.

OL, I agree that it's a strong virus and that there's been a lot of tragedy. People die all the time, of course, but these are "extra" deaths that we didn't see coming. I wear a mask at work, I don't want to get the thing because then so would Mrs. hrt have it. I feel terribly for anyone who gets a bad case of it and, in my small way, I try to help out.

Wannabe King Neil Ferguson was happy as a clam talking about more than a million deaths, as if he had the right to frighten people - clearly he shouldn't have that right, as he was so spectacularly wrong. He, and the cottage industry of alarmists and social engineers that sprang into action thanks to his gloomy and useless models, may in the end be more destructive than the virus.

Yet I am left to wonder, why was the Wall Street Journal the only newspaper to run this story on Durham’s activities, and the Washington Examiner the only newspaper to follow up? For that matter, why did no newsgathering source pick up on my and Neumayr’s investigation of the intelligence community’s surveillance of the Trump campaign years ago?

The lamb has been marinated overnight and will go in the oven in an hour or so for 4 hours. The tomato-avocado-mango salsa I made yesterday. Crab was taken from the shells, shredded, and mixed with finely minced celery, red pepper and chives earlier today. I’ll add the mayo, poupon and panko just before they’re formed and sauteed.

Thanks, Marlene!

Ripped from today’s headlines:

“But Simon, the son of Cathlas, one of their commanders, with much ado quieted the tumult of his own men, and stood so that the high priests might hear him, and said as follows: “I can no longer wonder that the patrons of liberty are under custody in the temple, since there are those that shut the gates of our common city to their own nation, and at the same time are prepared to admit the Romans into it; nay, perhaps are disposed to crown the gates with garlands at their coming, while they speak to the Idumeans from their own towers, and enjoin them to throw down their arms which they have taken up for the preservation of its liberty”-Flavius Josephus

Betraying my age here, but back in the early 70's Indianapolis finally got a PBS channel, which we were excited about because my son could watch "Sesame Street" on it.

At that time, Indianapolis did not have cable, so channels like Cartoon Network and Disney weren't available - only the 3 local network channels plus one privately owned channel.

Cable didn't arrive until the early 80's, and then not in all areas of the city at once.

However, cable is available now almost all over the state and PBS is mainly a charitable venture for liberal propaganda, and that reporter who was so insulting to the President confirmed me in my opinion that taxpayer money could be better spent on other things.

I've been keeping current with Maine media because we plan on going back in a few weeks. I was very surprised to read about the cancellation of the Yarmouth Clam Festival in July. The organizers of the event don't want the local business owners to have any financial obligations to sponsor the event during this time. The 55 year old traditional event usually draws 80,000 people over a three day period. How many festivals, fairs and other events will suffer the effects? New England thrives on those events in the summer. Why cancel an event in April that is held in July? Is it really a financial issue or fear issue?

Just as the IC's misuse of Fisa looks to be finally approaching judgment day, the notion of tracking citizens seems particularly ill-timed.

MissMarple2

GUS,

AMAX Coal had a HUGE mine in Wyoming, which I used to plot out on a computer map back in the early 70's. It's a strip mine (surface mining because the coal is shallowly situated and mined with bulldozers, large steam shovel-like diggers, and huge dump trucks).

The largest one I know of (from that time) is at Gillette. The coal is low-sulfur but also low in BTU's.

anonamom

The Covid Tracking Projects has 1,851 deaths for today. Though the count is taken around 4:00 EDT each day, yesterday it was increased later in the day, so that may happen today.

Some days (like Tuesday) tend to be overcounts, and some (like Monday) tend to be undercounts. Saturday doesn't seem to follow a clear pattern. Unless it increases later in the day, I suspect it's an undercount, with Friday's number an overcount, including deaths that would normally be counted on the next day.

MissMarple2

MM,

Brown Coal or aka Lignite. That is why all those big power plants in SD, ND, MO. And other places are so large. Takes as much as 50% more btus to generate the equivalent steam pressure for the same turbine-generator out-put.

The Wyoming fields are the largest and Burlington Northern has a dedicated track as well as Union Pacific to haul it out of there.

Marlene

I've mentioned that PBS was my lifesaver in northern Maine in the early 1980s. The only stations pre-cable were CBC out of St.John,New Brunswick, one local CBS affiliate and Maine Public Broadcasting. (PBS) Mr. Rogers was my "glass of wine" (very calming) while cooking supper back in the day. :) At least the daughter learned French watching Canadian Sesame St. :)

jimmyk

I don't want to get the thing because then so would Mrs. hrt have it.

Some "experts" argue that most of us will get it eventually (if we haven't already had it). I'm just hoping the Mrs and I can postpone it until treatments are better understood and available. Or at least until Andrew $&@*! Cuomo gets off his high horse and lets docs prescribe HCQ for non-hospitalized or non-already-near-dead WuFlu sufferers.

And Mrs K has a bit of a proclivity for bronchial infections, so she's maybe a bit more vulnerable, though generally men are significantly more likely to have bad cases than women.

MissMarple2

Jac,

Thanks for refreshing my memory. You are right about the lignite and the low BTU, as well as the huge power plants.

GUS

Jack and MM, that's exactly how I understood the surface/strip mining of coal in Wyoming. The ECONOMICS of this type of mining dictates, price, and who, what, and where, this resource is used.
It's extremely interesting to me, because each and every state I've been to, and I've been to all of the lower 48/contiguous state, have their own resources. They are not ubiquitous, rather, they grew to do the best, with what they had.
LIBTARDS and now more commonly FULL COMMIES, have made it their wet dream and BIDNESS, to interfere with WHAT WORKS.
As I've stated here several times over the years, I LOVE WYOMING. For a variety of reasons. Mostly, because hard working FREE AMERICANS, have created SOMETHING out of NOTHING.
Great state, great people.

Well, as cindyk, will tell you, the people of Wyoming are hardy, healthy and not to be messed with. You have farmers, ranchers, miners and pipelines to just mention a few. My summer there in 1963 was the healthiest I ever felt. After the Air Force, I seriously wanted to go an live there but Big Engineering called, and even though there was a power plant there (Bridger) they were building they felt I would help out better on the one in Southern Maryland.
