Forgot to mention, with the same caveat it might be adjusted later, but new cases in absolute numbers dropped over 8,000 today from 34,000+ to ~25,700. That's easily the biggest drop in new cases in both absolute and percent since this started.
If that number holds it's a good sign, but still only one day. When we do crest, I hope we can drop a lot more precipitously than Italy has.

jim nj

Iggy,

I'm getting ready to do my nightly recap, but just glancing at the numbers we came in with a lower new case number today than yesterday.

The last time that happened was 3/29:
3/28 19,494 new cases
3/29 18,985
3/30 21,351

so 3/29 dropped by 509 cases and then took off again, an obvious artifact in hindsight, as we more than made up for that the next day.

MJW

The Murray model webpage has been updated. Now 81,766 deaths are forecast.

On the daily death forecast, it shows 1755 deaths for April 4th. That's many more than the Covid Tracking Project website shows for the same day, but it's difficult to compare, because on the model website, deaths on April 3rd seem to be included in the April 4th count.

Worldometers look see

Total US cases 336,830, 25,195 new cases, %change 8%, deaths 9,618, recovered 17,977.

I haven't run the numbers to be sure, but it looks like the recovered %change is outpacing the %change of deaths. I may try to find the numbers to check that.

As Iggy previewed earlier there was a large, significant drop in new cases on Sunday.

8,965 less by my count. Remember I'm doing this at 2AM so my numbers won't match with end of day totals.

This may be a statistical reporting fluke that will be reversed. Offhand, I don't think so. The new case number may rise tomorrow. I don't expect it to reverse to the prior mean.

Why might that be? An out of date article on Quest:
https://www.modernhealthcare.com/technology/quest-labcorp-see-delays-covid-19-test-results

The last test backlog number was from Wednesday, but they had already cut into the backlog and probably continued to do so.

https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/california-news/california-covid-19-testing-backlog-cut-by-two-thirds/2340896/

Indicates to me that we are clearing the test result backlog. If so, two possible points - positive cases reported from these tests may be for already diagnosed people -or, because of the prior prioritization of tests the languishing results are mostly negative.

Something else may be going on. This is the first thought that comes to mind. Somebody else may have a better explanation.

recap
date total cases new cases %change
4/3 277,475 32,102 +13%
4/4 311,635 34,160 +12.3%
4/5 336,830 25,195 +8%

The NY % of all cases moved from 36.8% to 36.5%. NJ moved from 10.9% to 11.1%. Together the bi-state area accounts for 47.6% of all cases. That's about the same as yesterday, but down from Friday's 54.2%.

Johns Hopkins indicates that Spain jumped past Italy in a fashion that suggests that it will keep that lead and increase it over the next few days. Italy has 15,887 deaths, Spain has 12,641 deaths. Following the logic that more cases lead to more deaths suggests that Spain's deaths will rise to level of Italy's rather soon.

Spain looks really bad compared to Italy. Italy currently has more deaths, but Spain has more cases. Even worse the number of cases per million of 2,817.5 in Spain is way ahead of Italy's 2,133.8 per million. Not a good sign for Spain.

The "experts" are coming out of the wood work, from under every rock, slithering out of holes, gullies and THINK TANKS. Experts who knew and KNOW nothing about this specific illness.

The problem with experts is that they’re human beings. They’re liable to groupthink and CYA thinking and ego and all the other fallacies our species has come up with, just like everyone else is. A fancy title before their name, a Ph.d after it, or “public” in the name of their employer does not change that.

Fauci isn't helping when he says, "There is no EVIDENCE that it works."

I've said this before, but at the risk of tooting my own profession's horn: Economists aren't good for much, but they understand that you don't need controlled experiments in order to have "evidence." The whole field of econometrics is built around how to glean "evidence" from non-experimental data. James Heckman won the Nobel Prize for his work on this. "Freakonomics" is all about this. It can't always be done, or at least not so easily, but this case (hydroxycholoroquine) seems to me an easy one, because of how varying its use has been in different places. I would think biostaticians would know this too. I can't believe someone in Fauci's position doesn't seem to know it.

MissMarple2

I will bet the press conference is wild today after he tweeted what all of us know, that so many of the MSM is corrupt and dishonest.

We should have a contest on which one will ask the most insulting question.

jimmyk

“To this day the establishment media have not admitted that they were wrong and the President was right.” @FoxNews

Old Lurker

The observation last night (Iggy???) about it not being Fauci's job to consider economic implications of his advice, rather it is Mnuchin's and ultimately Trump's is on the right track.

Dr. Fauci is simply the scorpion in the famous Frog-Scorpion parable. He is what he is...that is his nature.

I disagree about putting the "other hand" advice all on Mnuchin. One (very important) voice, sure. But is that not exactly what a President's Cabinet is for so that all the components of the the nation are considered?

We need to get away from government by Czars.

Yes, Trump is in a serious box having used Fauci & Brix the way he has. He did not have to play the Frog.

Sometimes I am a couple of days behind. Rather than hunting for the last page, I'll open a jom tab to see if there's a new topic so I'll end up with 20 or 30 tabs open and several of them will be jom. Anyway, I clicked on one of those and the page was filled with 'celebrities' people had met. Here's one from maryrose:
"Agree about Mozart. Usually in May the Cleveland Orchestra has an all Mozart program which my husband and I faithfully attend."

Our city has had a 10 day Mozart festival that kicks off the first weekend in June for over 30 years. Joshua Bell, Itzhak Perlman, Sarah Chang, Ransom Wilson & New York Solisti Orchestra (later they changed the name to the Amici Orchestra because Wilson had dropped out and he owned the original name), Leontyne Price, James Galway and so many more have performed. I've 'bumped' into a lot of these musicians.

The festival always had lots of 'showcase events'as sidelines to keep visitors busy because over the years people from almost every state and quite a few foreign countries attended (are we allowed to refer to other countries as 'foreign' now, since we're all supposed to be globalists?) -- anyway,

Our English Equitation Group (club's name) produced a 'Dancing In The Meadow at Starview Farm' freestyle dressage show and top riders from Texas, Kansas, Missouri, and a few eastern states, as well as Oklahoma performed.

The farm was owned by the son of H.C. Price (pipeline company) and was called Shin'en Kan (Japanese for Home of the Faraway Heart). Joe Price, HC's son, was married to a lady from Japan and Bruce Goff, a student of Frank Lloyd Wright, designed several homes in our small city, as well as the Price Tower. Joe had a museum in LA (I think LA, anyway it's in CA) their family eventually moved to CA so he deeded his home, Shin-en Kan to the University of Oklahoma's architecture department. (Small bit of historical background for you. :) Anyway, Shin-en Kan became a study center and museum for students from all over. The surrounding land and meadow were beautiful and perfect for dressage.

I was the showcase 'creative director' :). Our daughter grew up riding and taking lessons while we lived in London, and there are always riders who ride English as well as Western here, so we had an active English riding club. (I rode, but was always a Level One dressage rider.) So, I organized a freestyle (musical) drill team for our daughter and about eight to ten other young women. Designing the intricate choreography and patterns and putting them to (mostly) classical music (I used Mozart several times) was fascinating, especially when all of those circles and riders weaving in and out of each other turned out to be beautiful. Several years we had over 1,000 people attending. We charged admission and the 'gate' went to support our therapeutic riding that went on through the years for handicapped riders. (Paying for horses, board, feed, trainers, etc.) I loved designing those rides and watching the girls as they performed for a good cause. It's not easy to get the 1,000 lb. horses cantering in and out of each other, but it's lots of fun. We never knew what horse might bolt or rear in excitement.

Anyway, I've 'bumped into' quite a few classical musicians -- and I'll bet you thought people here only played and enjoyed kazoos and banjos.

Broken record:

The Associated Press gave its version of a timeline to ding Trump about the feds being behind the supplies curve.

To me, AP shows malice in the form of what it leaves out.

According to AP:
JAN. 9 —The World Health Organization issues first public advisory about preliminary determination of novel coronavirus.

AP gives includes nothing to show how WHO diminished the importance of CV. In the advisory, WHO said:

- the virus in question can cause severe illness in some patients and does not transmit readily between people

- China has strong public health capacities and resources to respond

- WHO does not recommend any specific measures for travellers

Nor does AP include in its timeline any of the severe criticism launched at Trump for such things as his China Travel ban.

My conclusion: The Associated Press uses selective reporting to further its own narrative.

Reminds me of former AP Washington bureau chief (He left in 2010) Ron Fournier’s call for advocacy journalism.

Yeah, my hard-left cousin (highly educated government lawyer) ranted about that on FB:

I have two words for him, and for the RIDICULOUS man he idolizes: FUCK YOU.

There is no decorum any longer. Trump allows that, and yet tries to shred honorable reporters when they ask legitimate questions. He is an unmitigated disaster and I am PISSED at any of you FOOLS who voted for him. FUCK YOU, TOO. Even if you're supposed to be my friend, FUCK YOU."

and then in the comments to her post:

"there are two clauses religious freedom in the First Amendment. Trump, by encouraging this yahoo's shenanigans, could be seen as violating the establishment clause. And I absolutely have a right to be free from religion in my government, and in schools!"

There's no reasoning with that.

All of these leftists act like he's behaving like some goober from Frog Hollow and picking his nose while at a state dinner.

Soon Hemingway joined them, setting the stage for what must have been one of the odder and more claustrophobic households in literary history. The idea of sharing a two-bedroom house with his mistress, an angry wife, a contagious, sick toddler, and a hovering nanny might have brought a lesser man to his knees, but Hemingway later described the setting as “a splendid place to write.”

The Murphys and the Fitzgeralds did what they could to keep up the morale at the Hemingway-Pfeiffer homestead. In the early evenings at cocktail hour, they would park their cars on the road in front of the house have a drink by the fence lining the small front yard. Hemingway, Hadley, and Pfeiffer held up their end of the party from the veranda.

They were indeed social distancing pioneers, and it gave the Fitzgeralds and Murphys front-row seats to the drama of the Hemingways’ unconventional new arrangement—their “domestic difficulties,” as Zelda put it. At the end of each evening, the group mounted their empty bottles upside down on the fence spikes. By the time the Hemingways and Pfeiffer left a few weeks later, these trophies ran the entire length of the fence.

Another thing we economists learn is how to sniff out crappy data and turn it into better data. As some of you know, I've been following and analyzing the covidtracking.com data. I don't know if this is true of other sources (I suspect it is, because they're all getting the data from the same places), but data like "hospitalizations" and "recovered" are a mess. Half the states don't report them, or report them in different ways, or randomly start or stop reporting them. Covidtracking.com just adds up the totals of whatever is reported.

So, for example, when they report for the US cumulatively 333,000 cases, 41,000 hospitalizations, and 14,000 recovered: We know the cases are only the ones found by testing, but at least those are reported by all the states (as are deaths). But hospitalizations and recovered are probably low by 25 to 50 percent. It is possible to get better numbers on all of these, and possibly even to get a better handle on "cases." I've done some of this, but it's time-consuming.

The point is, some of these reported numbers are much worse than others, and possibly very misleading, but get reported as though they're facts. I'm sure people like Dr Murray are aware of this and looking at the data in a sophisticated way (his site doesn't really provide much information as far as I can tell), though his latest forecasts have been over the mark by a significant amount.

jimmyk

The thing about my crazy cousin is that I mainly feel sorry for her.

She lost her dad not that long ago, there's a lot of weirdness between all her siblings (much of which is not her fault), and she got divorced last year and now has to share custody of her kids (kids they adopted after several years of infertility treatments).

I feel like the constant lunatic rants against the President and her proud "resistance" membership is more a cry for help than anything else, because if she were actually happy and healthy, she wouldn't be posting profane rants on social media multiple times a day or regularly attending protests.

But I can't see any way to say that and be heard, so when I talk to her I keep only to safe topics to keep a relationship going.

News media, liberals mock conservatives for early pandemic comments they made themselves
A video entitled “Heroes of the Pandumbic” was posted Friday by the Comedy Central program “The Daily Show.” In less than 24 hours, it had racked up millions of views.

The video mocks conservative personalties and Trump administration officials, primarily those appearing on Fox News. A montage of brief clips implies these figures have uniquely missed the mark on coronavirus dangers, downplaying or denying the pandemic.

But a review of three months of public comments by public health officials, news personalities and liberal figures show they made similar comments as those skewered by The Daily Show video but have escaped similar critique.

It can't always be done, or at least not so easily, but this case (hydroxycholoroquine) seems to me an easy one, because of how varying its use has been in different places. I would think biostaticians would know this too.
