Monday was a day for believers. The coronavirus tide may have turned in Italy and Spain. Even NY had two days below 600 new deaths. After a Saturday figure of 630 new deaths, Gov. Cuomo said Sunday's 594 figure may be a "blip". But with Monday at 599, we have a shot at an actual trend developing!
As always, his presentations were filled with an array of detailed statistics. Though New York’s daily death toll peaked at 630 on Saturday, it hovered around 600 on both Sunday and Monday, he said. That followed a long stretch in which hospitalizations in the state were growing at a rate of 20 to 30 percent a day, but are now increasing at a single-digit rate.
“While none of this is good news, the flattening — or possible flattening — is better than the increases we have seen,” Mr. Cuomo said.
On the other hand, British PM Boris Johnson is in intensive care, which is grim news.
NY State New Deaths graph.
That chart shows 539 deaths in NY state on Apr 6. Weird, because Cuomo said 599. The site uses Johns Hopkins data, so what gives?

Breaking: Acting Navy Secretary Thomas Modly resigned Tuesday, U.S. military officials said, after denouncing Capt. Brett Crozier in angry remarks to the USS Theodore Roosevelt's crew~/I>
What an absolute, entirely preventable disaster.
Crozier undermines the national security of his country in his grandstanding effort to protect his men, and now he’s caused chaos in the leadership of the entire navy at a time when they might be called on to fight at any moment in the Persian Gulf or in the Pacific. Forget losing his command; he should be shot for the damage he’s caused.

just To add, the context is important here. If Crozier has been captain of a lone destroyer on patrol, or a single attack sub, or a ground commander of a small unit, I’d probably feel differently about his actions.
He was In command of the most powerful warship on Earth, armed with dozens of nuclear weapons, and an irreplaceable l piece of all our military plans offensively or defensively during a time of heightened tensions with China. Publicly complaining about the medical state of his crew and their unreadiness for battle is an open invitation for China to act aggressively. And anyone who reached his rank and position had to know that.

Crozier undermines the national security of his country in his grandstanding effort to protect his men
Or maybe he was more worried about himself.
Let's see how his judgment holds up if the Chinese decide to launch a desperation attack on our now-depleted fleet. They know they'll never return to their pre-virus power, and they've also heard the word "reckoning" being used by high officials in affected countries. These are cold-blooded people who would sacrifice millions of their fellow countrymen if necessary to achieve their objectives (as they have in the past) and could easily conclude that this is the best opportunity they'll ever have, thanks to the asshole captain.

I think that is close, Ralph. Modly said that if the Captain didn’t know that an email to 20-30 people wouldn’t get leaked then he is either stupid or naive. That got changed by the media to “Modly called the captain stupid and naive.” Then the Navy spokespeople said something to the effect of “we are sorry but there is no official transcript of what SECNAV said so we can’t confirm anything.” Then an audio came out that clearly shows Modly saying the first statement not the first interpretation of his statement by the media.
Modly has made his own mess while dealing with Captain Clown’s ill advised maneuver.

The 'Big Stick' Carrier Strike Group Is Packing Some Major Firepower
The USS Theodore Roosevelt is likely the best protected aircraft carrier in history.
Any one of those escort ships could have acted as a quarantine ship for evacuated sailors from the carrier, and likely replaced the evacuees with its own sailors. Then it could have safely taken them to Guam without anyone knowing a thing.
Posted by: Extraneus | April 07, 2020 at 04:15 PM

I put the chances of that close to 0%. If the Chinese do attack then all those infected sailors will get back on the carrier and perform their duty as the captain pointed out they would in his letter.

Of course, as the others so often have to say when wasting time on TomR, that is NOT what I said.
I did say, explaining precisely what I meant as I said it, that the military can only work if legal orders from a commander are followed. Period. That leaves no room for "Ethical" exceptions through the eyes of the orderee, nor does it require a TomR style "debate" by the commander before the subordinate agrees to follow said legal order. I said that I did not see how a military could function otherwise.
We have us a pattern here, guys.

If it is, as TomR instructs us, a tenet of ALL military commanders to consider the health and wellbeing of the troops, then would said tenet not automatically be considered by the chain of command above the officer receiving the command and therefore should not the subordinate conclude his boss thought about it and issued the order he thought was required anyway, even if that might harm the troops? If that subordinate failed to communicate a failure in readiness to his boss before that order was formulated, that would be on the subordinate. If that subordinate had screwed up in such an important failure to communicate in a timely manner, broadcasting his failure to the world was pretty stupid or naive.
Excuse me while I go resign having said that.
