The greater New York City area stands alone on a map of the US with coronavirus cases and deaths.
On a per-capita basis I've done some quick calculations. Numbers get updated but the flavor remains the same:
With apologies to the good people of the great (but suffering) states of Illinois, Michigan and Louisiana, the US is basically two countries. New York (by which we mean, the Greatest City in the World and the surrounding counties) and New Jersey are having a death toll comparable to the most afflicted countries in Europe. 90% of the country, however, is running as well as Germany, which is widely regarded as a "How did they do it" success story.
And California?!? They had early inflows from China and the same President, FDA, and CDC as the rest of the US. Testing? Limited. Yet there they are, half the German per capita toll. Hard to credit Trump for that. Or blame him.
Why the difference? NYC is a major hub for international travel, its mass transit usage dwarfs other cities, its population density is 50% higher than San Francisco at number two, and who knows what else. [Another guess: California and Washington were hit from Wuhan and may have gotten some help from the Jan 31 China travel ban; NYC got more infections from Europe than Asia.]
Politically, one size clearly does not fit all across the US. Trump is a New Yorker. Its likely he and the media are very New York-centric (I know I am.) But we will be re-opening the economy by regions, not all at once.
DO NOTE: Official coronavirus deaths in NY have to be under-reported. "Excess deaths" above a typical year are off the charts. Yes, including off the charts that go back to 9/11.
MORE: The NY Times on:
- the lost January during which the professionals at the CDC and FDA were given a long leash and failed on both test design and Emergency Use Authorizations for other labs (but did a good job of protecting their turf!). IMHO, Trump ran in part on a "Don't trust the DC bureaucracy" platform; he picked a bad time to trust them.
- Everything Trump did wrong. History is written by the winners, so a story like this is shot through with hindsight bias. Just for example, everybody who was right shouts out; folks who were wrong aren't rushing forward to tell the Times.
- Everything Cuomo and deBlasio did was wrong. Same caveat about the Times and their 2020 Hindsight project.
Indeed there is a new thread!

Thought this might give you a laugh:
Sent By an Anonymous UPS Driver
1) Steve: He has been waiting for this moment his whole life. He has been drinking boilermakers since 10:00 am in his recliner and his AR is within arms reach. He has 6 months provisions in the basement and a bug out bag due west buried in the woods. Steve demands a handshake as I give him his package. He's sizing me up as I deliver his ammo. Steve will survive this, and he will kill you if he needs to.
2) Brad: He is standing at his window wearing skinny jeans and a Patagonia t-shirt. He is mad because there were no organic tomatoes at Whole Foods today. He points at the ground where he has taped a 6 ft no go zone line from his porch. I leave his case of Fuji water, organic granola bites, and his new "Bernie Bro" hat at the tape. Brad will not survive.
3) Nancy: She has sprayed everything with Thieves oil. Bought all the Clorox wipes, hand sanitizer, toilet paper, meat, and bread from the local grocery chain. She has quarantined her kids and sprays them with a mixture of thieves, lavender, & mint essential oils daily. She has posted every link known to man about "The Rona" on her social media. She will spray you if you break the 6 ft rule. I will leave her yet another case of toilet paper. She will last longer than Brad, but not Steve.
4) Karen: She has called everybody and read them the latest news on "The Rona". She asked for the manager at Food Lion, Walmart, Publix, McDonald's, Chi-Fil-A, and Vons all before noon demanding more toilet paper. Karen's kids are currently faking "The Rona" to avoid her. I'm delivering "Hello Kitchen" to her. Karen will not survive longer than Brad.
5) Mary: Is sitting in the swing watching her kids have a water balloon fight in the front yard as she is on her fourth glass of wine. She went to the store and bought 2 cases of pop tarts, 6 boxes of cereal, 8 bags of pizza rolls, And a 6 roll pack of toilet paper. There is a playlist of Bob Marley, Pink Floyd, and Post Malone playing in the background. I'm bringing her second shipment of 15 bottles of wine in 3 days. Mary will survive and marry Steve. Together they will repopulate the earth.

Biden and his team are keen on utilizing Obama as quickly as they can, especially on the issue of fundraising where they see him as an asset to compete with President Trump and his massive stockpile of small dollar donations.
Now, with Sanders out of the way, Obama could release an endorsement for his former running mate as soon as Tuesday morning, the paper says.
With Americans cooped up at home due to the coronavirus pandemic, the endorsement would be online. One Democratic official said the goal was to make the announcement “not look like a hostage video.”

Almost three-in-five Democrats want taxpayers to bail out the poverty-stricken communities of illegal immigrants whom they welcomed into the United States, according to an April poll by Ipsos.
The April poll asked “if the government should provide temporary financial help for undocumented immigrants who can’t work because of layoffs or illness: 40% in favor, 42% against, 18% ‘didn’t know.'”
40% isn't "almost 60%". When did they rehire Michelle Fields?

On the numbers of deaths in senior living facilities: Yes, they look bad, but I still think perspective is needed. These institutions have to have large flow of staff coming in each day. Since people can be asymptomatic and contagious, it's almost impossible to avoid having some bad outcomes.
But what is the alternative? Are the outcomes going to be much better if grandma moves in with a son or daughter's family? Perhaps. But can the family administer medications, do occupational therapy, etc., all the things that these facilities do? And if the family has to bring in various practitioners to take care of these things, how less likely is some kind of infection?
The point is that this is a vulnerable population whether they are in a facility or in some other arrangement, and completely insulating them from infection is not so easy. It's still not obvious to me that the facilities are doing a bad job (at least since the early outbreaks when no one was prepared).
Posted by: jimmyk | April 14, 2020 at 11:08 AM
I'm actually shocked that more Dems than not don't want them bailed out.

I’ve seen some notions that certain blood pressure meds seem to be associated with worse CCP virus outcomes. Shouldn’t the people taking those meds be trying to transition over to different meds? There are lots of different meds and which one any patient ends up on seems pretty haphazard. Seems like a pretty good randomized dataset right there.
Also a good thing to look at when doing those random surveys of who already has CCPv antibodies — is there any drug people are on that seems to be associated with getting this thing and getting over it with mild/no symptoms?

DO NOTE: Official coronavirus deaths in NY have to be under-reported. "Excess deaths" above a typical year are off the charts. Yes, including off the charts that go back to 9/11.
Yes, but I would wager we'll eventually figure out that cases are even more under-reported. NYC has a positive test rate of around 50% versus around 15% in most of the country. I guarantee you that with that kind of positive test rate, many milder cases have to be going uncounted. The threshold for getting tested in the NYC area is obviously much higher.

I presumed that's what they did, but it wasn't an innocent error. I suspect they started with the fact that only 42% said they were opposed, and conveniently interpreted that as "nearly 60%" favor. They could as easily, of course, said that nearly 60% are opposed. It's not a coincidence that the chose the former, never mind just describing it honestly.

Graingers. I have a couple dozen regular venders I buy from. Whenever I am looking for a new widget I check G and typically find them about double the price. I think the only things I have from them are a couple shop vacs.
Side story. An old doc buddy who used to practice in Laramie was invited a couple times to go shoot prairie dogs on a big ranch in eastern WY owned by the head honcho of Graingers. When they were done, the host handed the guests a bill for his trouble.
Re hand tools, I still have every Craftsman widget I ever bought going back to about 1960. Along with Starret machinist’s scales/gauges from my uncle dating to the ‘20s.
When we rebuilt this place, I splurged on cabinets from Baldhead for my Garage-ma-Hal. Given that I pretty much live in there, I can’t imagine doing it any other way. (They actually drove them up from Oregon and installed them.)

Not sure if this was discussed here, but the NYT had a hit piece on HCQ, publicizing a small Brazil study that supposedly resulted in some fatalities due to heart attacks. Aside from focusing on that study as opposed to all the others with more favorable results, the idiot Rutenberg failed to notice (as I understand it) that the study involved CQ, not HCQ. CQ is known to be more toxic.
I think narc will remember, but I'm pretty sure Rutenberg was one of the NYT people who first said that the rules of journalism have to be different in the Trump era.

Well I’ve caught up again – sorta – thanks to low number of post on Easter. I’m hunkered down her in Texas (Abilene) working remote from my home office. We are essential business (multifamily housing) across the state. About 4 weeks ago, I was on my way to do my fireman thingy on a Houston project when my boss told on me a Sunday afternoon to hold up in a hotel on the way while the company board of directors (he is one) had an emergency meeting Monday afternoon. Driving – I quit flying early in March. (We were supposed to meet in Houston Monday am.) That was to determine policy regarding CCP virus. After some vacillation, I was told to head back home and did so Tuesday am. Been here since. Some talk Friday about the possibility a meet up in our San Antonio office in a week or two (He lives SA, I live Abilene, both office out of Dallas). Our division has two unoccupied offices there so we can “distance”. SA is home to our commercial division, Dallas home to Multifamily, El Paso corporate home and heavy infrastructure home. Mention of that possibility at home brought a “not no but HELL NO” from Mrs. W. I check most boxes (68, Type 2, BP meds, not skinny, and A-fib history) for staying clear of this crap.
As said, we are essential but are trying to be lenient on subs who have trouble keeping manned up.

In conclusion, based on currently available data and in view of the overwhelming evidence of mortality reduction in cardiovascular disease, ACE-I and ARB therapy should be maintained or initiated in patients with heart failure, hypertension, or myocardial infarction according to current guidelines as tolerated, irrespective of SARS-CoV2. Withdrawal of RAAS inhibition or preemptive switch to alternate drugs at this point seems not advisable, since it might even increase cardiovascular mortality in critically ill COVID-19 patients.

My brother who was working at a company near our local Grainger store told me that I should go back and tell them I just wanted to make a "cash purchase" and say that I worked at his place, and tell them I was him if they asked, but I wasn't about to give my business to a place that didn't want my business.

--Plus WI, MN and MI all elected hyper partisan Dem governors in the past couple years.--
2018 was a fairly typical offyear oppositional wave.

Not letting that Orange Man be proven right is worth dying for when you're a moonbat.
They deserve a full moonbat funeral at a toxic waste dump presided over by Revs. Meathead and Jen Rubin and with a choir of pink pussy hatted Karens singing REEEEEEEEEE!

I have a niece who's a nurse in Abilene. I texted her a few days ago and she said they haven't had a CV case yet in her hospital.

Someone touched on it yesterday but my biggest takeaway from yesterday’s pandemic update was the over the top stupidity of the msm. Spent the first half of the Q&A claiming that president did not shut the country down soon enough, then the last half claiming president had no authority to open things back up.

You're not nervous?
I feel pretty confident Trump will be reelected. I'm less confident about the House and Senate.

"Cry for a Shadow" was one of only two instrumentals the Beatles recorded. This was when Pete Best was on drums.

If Rasmusssen tracking is accurate, jimmyk, so far Trump's reelection chances have been hurt by the Woo Floo. Trump's numbers recently in Ras have been near their low points, both in overall approve/disapprove and strong approve/disapprove. I think it's difficult to figure out how this will all shake out in November, but for now, Woo Floo has been a net negative for Trump.

The Baldhead cabinets look real nice, MT.
I helped a friend build a super garage and talked him into Lista brand cabinets.
I have a couple of rollaway boxes and the rest goes in an old metal pantry cabinet. :-)

Cuomo’s been calling daily, even hourly, begging for everything, most of which should have been the state’s responsibility, such as new hospitals, beds, ventilators, etc. I got it all done for him, and everyone else, and now he seems to want Independence! That won’t happen!

Tell the Democrat Governors that “Mutiny On The Bounty” was one of my all time favorite movies. A good old fashioned mutiny every now and then is an exciting and invigorating thing to watch, especially when the mutineers need so much from the Captain. Too easy!

>China has been insinuating itself into Australia bigtime.
I've been talking with my partner in Australia about this since the start of this mess. You're right, China is bigly imbedded in Australia, more so than even here.
For example, 30% of the student body at University of New South Wales are Chinese nationals. Or were. China buys an assload of minerals and other mined products from Australia most notably coal.
They are in the midst of unwinding just as we are.
