The stately NY Times is slowly turning towards the recognition that China can be a villain in this story even if Orange Man says they are.
This piece is about the Chinese propaganda push to rewrite the narrative with themselves as the heroes, imposing draconian measure to buy precious time for the world.
It lets them off easy - just for starters, China concealed the fact of an outbreak for weeks, then misled WHO about human-to-human transmission, then refused to let the CDC or WHO put boots on the ground. Some of this has been covered in the MSM but the general arc - this is a Chinese push for global influence - has been sidetracked by Orange Man Bad coverage.
The Times was actually very good on Feb 1, which means they had a story in the works just as Trump announced the travel ban with China. And they have picked up the cudgels again - here is a WHO basher with an unexpected headline:
Trump Slammed the W.H.O. Over Coronavirus. He’s Not Alone.
Weird, right? I think they decided to shift gears last week when the "story" emerged that - brace yourselves - US intelligence agencies believed the Chinese were cooking the numbers:
C.I.A. Hunts for Authentic Virus Totals in China, Dismissing Government Tallies
Intelligence officials have told the White House for weeks that China has vastly understated the spread of the coronavirus and the damage the pandemic has done.
We'll see how the Times coverage evolves. Can their readers handle a story with multiple villains? And some of the villains are not rich white males?!? It's Game of Thrones complexity!
Well! What do we have here! Thank you, TM!

In the next few weeks things will change. We have followed the rules and now we must focus on the economy and making people feel less hopeless.
My theory is , when your number is up it is up. Most persons who have died in New York had diabetes, or other health problems. Nursing homes and cruise ships account for many of the cases.
We need stats on who has died and their medical history.
Stop with holding valuable medicine from people.

No. Cree, an American company, needs the plant for high power chip sets for the next 20 years of new automobiles, etc, using larger wafers.
Also, it is honestly prepped to go live ASAP with one plant to get a production line installed in Q1-2 of 2021 (currently being validated in Albany), air quality permits done, and electrical, water, gas, and sewer installed, colleges nearby already training operators, the other two sites should go, too.

And I suspect from Dr Birx's comment about the unreliability of Sunday numbers that they, and presumably Dr Murray, take that into account.
That would explain Murray reducing his numbers even in the face of Tuesday's "spike" in deaths.

Ralph, unlike the Depression era whence you and I learned lessons from our parents and grandparents, my concern with banks these days is not their failing, but what the government will turn them into once they have been saved. (TARP anyone?)
That is when SJW clauses will be inserted into all their contracts and accounts that are protected will have their limitations enforced.
All of our leasing is done by a friend who owns many more centers than we do, and who is about as connected in Dem circles as one can be. Last night his board concluded that the PPP assistance would be of almost zero value to his small tenants, so like us, all he can do is hold the hands of his tenants one by one and encourage them not to do anything drastic. That takes a lot of staff time for those "talks".
The two great mysteries to all of us, after wondering when the hob nailed boots will be lifted from our necks, is how many tenants will want to reopen (Cathy's point), and then over how many months/years will it take to achieve a business level that will support the rental rates we used to enjoy.
Clarice, to your suggestion that commercial property owners withhold tax payments and sue for injunctions against the counties, we are praying that some of our much much richer peers will do exactly that. We're kinda hoping that some public owners will see that as a fiduciary duty to their shareholders. Pity a REIT that is required to distribute x% of its accrual based earnings to stay a REIT.

no mention re taxpaying hotel owners and compensation, insurance, tax relief etc. no mention re PPP loan sheperding with banks.
no mention of any long- term strategy for these state-appointed squatters being housed elsewhere on the taxpayer's dime.
no mention of how to deal with people coming to CA to " experience homelessness" ( the new astigmatic catchphrase among non- profit pros making a paid career of throwing their hands up over a problem which they dont know how to solve).

--No problem with this--but pick a few people you know who AREN'T from any of those groups who need protection who are going to die. More than a few.
The cashier at your grocer; that nice fellow who ushers at church. Your call here. Maybe the librarian.--
You forgot one person; me. Maybe the usher at church coughs on and kills me.
Doesn't all that happen every year with the flu?
Except the flu is even worse because it kills a not insignificant number of innocent small children.
We let people engage in all sorts of activities that harm themselves and others.
Most of those activities are far less vital to the well being of the country than a functioning economy.
It's important we don't dismiss the risks involved by pretending there is some vast conspiracy to fool us into thinking this is a dangerous disease when it's really not and it's all really much ado about nothing. It's also important to realize in this kind of situation a tidy cost/benefit analysis is not going to work.
But Herb Stein's aphorism becomes the real world cost/benefit analysis at some point; the shutting down of the economy cannot go on and so it won't. The government will either join the people in opening it back up or fight it.
I don't like the government's chances if it chooses the latter.
The government can create money unlimited. What it cannot create is the wealth that gives that money value. If it doesn't open things back up all those front line doctors and nurses won't have to worry about a TP shortage because eventually that is all their paychecks will be useful for with no wealth to back them up, especially since so many of these patients are medicare.
--Over forty NYMTA drivers are dead;--
Well, I'm thinking Ralph Kramden would probably be in a high risk group and I'm guessing most of them were too.
--As you are hearing, testing , testing, testing...
...Game changer, when we get it. That's the ball to keep your eye on.--
As Ext points out, that could take months, at which point we're in the 'we had to destroy the village to save it' territory.

jimmyk:
"But as I said above, there are risks on both sides that have to be balanced."
Among the risks that I don't think have been mentioned -- although I've had to skip a bit to catch up -- is the fact that every even remotely alert terrorist now knows how to shut this country down completely. Suicide bombers will no longer have to struggle with bulky bombs and detonators. Just infect a few young men with another novel virus, and send their asymptomatic asses on a world tour. Emerging from the COVID-19 lockdown will just be the beginning of that dynamic.
We need to learn some serious lessons from this go around about protective measures and emergency ramping up, because I don't think just guessing a what it might be worth stockpiling is a plan. How often can we afford to bring our country, not just our economy, but our lives to a crashing halt before recovery becomes impossible? Even this once is going to be devastating. We must figure out how to manage a pandemic without bringing every facet of normal life to a standstill. As we know, each one has its own special kinks, so we need to design flexibility into the system.

"Just two days into its "distance learning" program, Berkeley Unified has suspended its use of video conferencing platforms after a naked adult "Zoombomber" infiltrated a lesson.
The nude man entered into a virtual Berkeley High class and used racial slurs, Principal Erin Schweng said in an email to the school community."
So, to summarize:
-- Entire school district shuts down due to virus panic.
-- Classes moved online to "Zoom" videoconferences.
-- Racist pervert hacks into one class conference, shows his dick to the kids.
-- All education cancelled for the rest of the year as a result.

The only ones who seem happy are the dogs!! My computer is next to a window which looks out on our front yard, and dogs are getting walked constantly as an excuse for people to get out. I swear the dogs are smiling!
Meanwhile, down at the liquor store, the Hispanic clerk wears a black satin mask, looking very glamorous (my son refers to her as the Zorro clerk), while the Asian clerk wears no mask.
And the guys picking up their cases of beer after work don't wear masks, either. I wear a mask because I don't want to be fussed at by my daughter, since we live in the same house.
I would like to know how the liquor stores became essential businesses here in Indiana. Very curious. Not that I am complaining, as I prefer to pop over there than drive all the way to Kroger.

My women friends say if the app can erase worry lines and dark roots, they will pay double.

OL @ 11:52,
I disagreed with PUK at that time, if I remember correctly, on this because “setting prices” wouldn’t bring half the value that either auction rate potentially could.
I’d add “Surge Pricing” to that now, as an option.

It's important we don't dismiss the risks involved by pretending there is some vast conspiracy to fool us into thinking this is a dangerous disease when it's really not and it's all really much ado about nothing.
How can you question the established fact that Dr Fauci is a high ranking person in the globalist Illuminati seeking to assist Bill Gates with getting us to voluntarily accept their immunization which contains a digital ID aka the Biblical Mark of the Beast?

We've done that before, Iggy.
She outkohned herself...
@sallykohn
I'm really tired of reading how business owners are "forced" to layoff workers. No one made them do that. They *chose* to do that. Not saying it isn't a hard choice, during a hard time, but to say they were *forced* obscures their agency AND casts owners/CEOs as the victims.

Ext-
The Fed announced a new “facility” to buy shi, I mean, lower investment grade debt, including REIT debt and Blue Hell Munis, just this AM. Returns the REIT to sudden solvency, given that Fed put.

Why the hell is anyone using Zoom?
It's known to be insecure as hell at best, and possibly intentional malware.
I think Microsoft sucks, but I'll use Skype over Zoom (or about anything else you could name).

I have made and completed three full lists of projects.
Anybody have ideas what I might have forgotten?
Having organized my entire garage into plastic bins with nice labels, is there a Dewey Decimal system for how they should be arranged?
I mean, after sorting tools into hand tools with sub categories, tools with batteries, and tools with cords, is there a protocol?
Just asking.

--OL, what's your take as to why REITs are bouncing back, or the SPDR real estate ETF for example:--
Dead bedbug bounce.

Good catch, thanks Mel.
How else to get a $10T balance sheet at the Fed, right?

Forced Socialism certainly seems to leave a bad taste in the mouths of a lot of the LIVs. And personal responsibility seems to be a desired habit again.
Imagine that.

We did have a deal, Lyle, but low hangin fruit is just low hangin fruit.

This deserves a replay from yesterday. Video (34 seconds) at the link. I love it when the President drops hints.

When you go to the Apple app store and search for ZOOM, it comes up with an app labeled in Chinese characters.
I decided then and there not to install it.
