Happy belated jimmyk!

It's a long video (55 mins) but I recommend the discussion Jim posted last night (https://youtu.be/289NWm85eas). Talks about the MLB study among other virus thangs.

Something I didn't realize -- there are no vaccines for the known corona-viruses (6 total, plus the new one). So don't put too much faith in a vaccine any time soon, if at all. We might just have to slug this one out, doing what we can on the preventative/treatment side of it.

Mitch McConnell says Obama should have 'kept his mouth shut' about Trump response to coronavirus

"Generally former presidents just don't do that. I remember that President George W. Bush and his father, went right through eight years of Democratic administrations after they left office and kept their mouths shut, because they didn't feel it was appropriate for former presidents to even critique a president of another party," he said.

"So I think President Obama should have kept his mouth shut," McConnell continued.

"We know he doesn't like much this administation is doing, that's understandable. But I think it's a little bit classless frankly, to critique an administration that comes after you," he added.

"You had your shot, you were there for eight years," McConnell concluded, "I think the tradition that the Bushes set up of not critiquing the president comes after you is a good tradition."

One thing you may not know is that I advised from the beginning of the administration that Comey should be removed and the FBI given a fresh start.

That isn’t exactly what he said in the recently released transcript. He deferred much of this bravery to RR.

Word games:

Some have asked, why take the job as Attorney General if I knew I would have to recuse myself from the investigation? I knew no such thing. I wasn’t informed of Comey’s secret investigation until after I became Attorney General, and the investigation wasn’t publicly confirmed by the FBI until weeks after my recusal.

Knowing of the President’s disagreement with my decision, I tendered my resignation in writing the morning after Robert Mueller was appointed as special counsel.

He admits he knew about Comey’s secret investigation right after he became AG but attempts to make the casual reader focus on the “public” release timeline. Then he acts like he reflected on the President’s earlier angst over the recusal and decided to coincidentally submit his resignation the same day Mueller was appointed.

The truth is, Trump blew up at him over how he allowed such a cancer to grow unchecked and culminate in a disastrous special counsel appointment. That is what inspired his resignation “attempt.” Sessions knew full well that by prolonging the hoax well after Comey’s firing there would be very little chance that Trump would fire him in the face of the constant “its a coverup” climate that had fomented.

Sessions is a real disappointment. He talks about being “honorable” but he showed no such trait wen he, now admittedly, discovered the Comey witch-hunt and boxed Trump in instead of quitting in his first week.

Why not tackle that argument? Because to do so makes it very difficult to defend Comey's retention of and work with a bunch of corrupt political hacks?
Trump fired Comey and evidently hates him. Comey evidently hates Trump. Comey's actions while not universally and in every respect criminal or corrupt were on balance incompetent, corrupt, contrary to FBI policy, destructive, self serving and in some cases very possibly criminal and at times bizarre.

Not crunching a bunch of numbers but in looking at other countries, what happens is after the rapid ramp up there is a plateau that may see a slow decline and then the decline accelerates as all areas of the country pass the peak.
Daily deaths will almost certainly bounce back up today but the weekly lows of Sunday and Monday have declined for three straight weeks and yesterdays deaths were the lowest since late March. The growth rate of yesterday in both deaths and new cases was the lowest since February.
The political risk seems to me to run in both directions. If we open up and there is no significant second wave then what the hell was the point of it all?
We could have simply protected the most vulnerable and avoided the majority of the economic damage. Instead NY shipped the sick into nursing homes and made everyone else stay home, which in itself seems to have caused many if not most of the cases.

Tom R

CH @ 6:38

What I am trying to do is take the anti-Sundance approach on this new info we only recently learned of thanks to the documents released in the Flynn case. Regardless of what your opinion is of Comey, an objective analysis of his behavior results in a Jeckyll and Hyde conclusion. Prior to his firing his actions in total helped Trump get elected. After his firing his actions have been 100% anti-Trump. I am just trying to figure out why he did what he did pre-firing where there is clear evidence he was opposed to Brennan, Clapper, Yates and McCabe.

The dots that don't connect is figuring out why Comey would take two major actions to help Trump get elected and make himself Public Enemy #1 with the Democrats and then turn around and be part of the Obama criminal cabal's coup attempt against Trump? That is what I am trying to figure out.

BTW I will admit I was wrong about Flynn's legal fees if/when he ever pays them. One good explanation for why he never paid them is because he was running a sting operation to entrap corrupt DOJ/FBI officials, he knew at some point the truth would be revealed and he would not have to pay Covington the $4+ million they billed him

Tom R

So I'm done putting up with someone arguing in bad faith

CH @ 6:38

BTW I don't think you can fairly accuse me of arguing in bad faith. When someone does the right thing you can't blow it off and ignore it just because you have already made the decision that person is guilty. That is one of Sundance's biggest faults which is why I said I am taking the anti-Sundance approach.

Here is the question I want answered:

During the campaign he was all about stopping illegal immigration. One would have thought he would have taken Homeland Security as a cabinet position.

Instead, President Trump said he showed up FOUR times asking for the Attorney General's' position. That indicates to me that someone wanted him in that position, perhaps so that he could be forced to recuse, putting Rosenstein in a position of power.

I don't know the answer and I can be convinced almost as easily in either direction. Since Obama politicized almost everything (Fauci is at the Senate now advocating mail-in voting, as we expected)

Prior to Trump getting elected and Spygate information like Strzok/Page texts released to the public, how many people here were well informed on McCabe, Strzok, Pientka, Priestap, Baker, McCord etc? Was there any evidence publicly available that would lead an informed person to know these people were so corrupt they would spy on fellow Americans and take part in a coup against Trump?

The answer is no. I knew McCabe was Deputy FBI Director but I didn't know who any of those other people were. AFAIK the evidence of their corruption wasn't discovered until Horowitz uncovered it in his IG investigation of the FBI's handling of the Hillary email server case. That IG report wasn't released until Trump took office.

What we have now are people with 20/20 hindsight blaming Comey for not firing/reassigning corrupt members of the FBI whose corruption was not publicly exposed until Horowitz uncovered it. I don't that is fair/legit criticism. Not one person here knows at what point in time Comey discovered most of his senior leadership at the FBI was corrupt. People are just pulling a Sundance and assuming Comey knew his people were corrupt from the start because he was corrupt too and part of the Obama criminal cabal. What I have been pointing out is the evidence that conflicts with that assumption. I would hope that kind of discussion is welcome here.

Does anyone remember back when Bush43 was president and the Vermont Senator Jim Jeffords switched parties?

I remember this because he was on Fox talking to someone and said he switched because the dairy subsidy was going to be revoked. (This was a big deal in Vermont.) Later, McConnell said he had no idea where he got that news because he had no such intention. Kristol was on the panel and he was grinning like a Cheshire cat.

I also thought Kristol was instrumental in Quayle's destruction. Quayle was not stupid; he was a graduate of DePauw and IU Law and much smarter than Bush Jr. I think Kristol maneuvered him, too, according to Quayle's autobiography. He was Quayle's aide at the time and counseled him to stand up to Bush 41 and not give in. (Old man Bush didn't like it, and now that we know more about the family, I am not surprised. He was probably also thinking either GW or Jeb would run next, and wanted all of the competition our of the way. Little did Jeb expect Donald Trump!)

...Not one person here knows at what point in time Comey discovered most of his senior leadership at the FBI was corrupt.--

That's a curious argument.
The public revelations are utterly irrelevant to what Comey knew or should have known.
If the FBI director's job is not to assess the competence and corruption level of his underlings then whose is it?
Moreover he certainly knew how corrupt they were when he was setting Flynn up and setting Trump up for an SC.
He is a self-evidently self serving, corrupt demagogue with a weird streak a mile wide.
The most curious thing is why you continue to give him the benefit of the doubt as one of the good guys over things you assess to have been of great benefit to Trump. Given his overall record of incompetence and corruption and hostility to Trump and Trump's detestation of the guy, wouldn't the more rational course in trying to reconcile those moments you assess as pro-Trump be to assume this self serving guy was serving himself? Let's assume you're correct and some of his actions benefitted Trump before the election. Doesn't Occam and common sense say he was playing both sides of the fence because that's what guys do who like power and want to retain it after the election? That's not helping Trump. That's helping himself. And then, once he got canned, he no longer had power and so he could show off just how crooked and vindictive he was since he was no longer trying to curry favor with Trump.
That's what lying, sneaking conniving weasels do. Why you insist on painting it in some noble light is beyond me except that it's too hard to just admit you were wrong about the creep.

I have never served in a large DC bureaucracy [though I did serve n SAC] just as I have never spent any time locked up in a mental health facility. But I know that the former is overweighted with ambitious, scrupleless, backstabbers just as surely as I know the latter is chock full of mental cases.
Comey seems to me one of those unfortunate specimens who would be quite at home in the habitat of either ecosystem.

Hmmm. Who says you can't teach an old dog new tricks? And here I thought that neologisming was anathema to you.

neologisming

I think it's spelled differently, and ...

"You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means."

Responding to @SenatorHassan, Dr. Fauci "general testing for all" in nursing homes "is a good start," but also need surveillance capabilities.

This guy is a statist and needs NOT to be in charge of the CDC. In fact, he needs to RETIRE. If not be indicted for corrupt practices!

Who decided we needed SURVEILLANCE? Good Grief!

Your argument used to be that he couldn’t have possibly be billed as much as was being reported. Were you incorrect?

That wasn't my argument. My argument was based on the fact he plead guilty the day after he was indicted, why would Flynn allow Covington to bill him $2000 per hour (that bill rate info came out in the trial of Flynn's business partner) and accumulate $4+ million in legal fees? That is 2000 hours of legal services for someone who wasn't even going to trial. That many billable hours still doesn't pass the smell test. Covington didn't have to spend any time preparing for a criminal defense case.

Keep in mind it was the Mueller SC who kept requesting delays for Flynn's sentencing. I still think Flynn agreed to the delays because the plan called for his case not getting resolved until Durham's investigation was completed. All of the damning info we have learned about recently had to be kept under wraps until the timing was right. Now that the corruption within the Obama administration is public knowledge, the battlefield has been prepped for the release of Durham's indictments.

If I was the screenwriter for the Spygate movie that is how I would write it.

Yeah, that was a good one, boris. The change halfway through is an example of what I was talking about re: arrangements. Nice clean-cut boys too.

The eagleton play in other words.

[i]BTW I will admit I was wrong about Flynn's legal fees if/when he ever pays them. One good explanation for why he never paid them is because he was running a sting operation to entrap corrupt DOJ/FBI officials, he knew at some point the truth would be revealed and he would not have to pay Covington the $4+ million they billed him[/i]

This is why I accuse you of arguing in bad faith; you and RG were both denying that the bills could be as large as were claimed no matter how they were generated. And others here knew otherwise. Furthermore if he was running a sting, I think an ethical problem was created by Flynn allowing people to raise money for him. Granted I believe they were done for him by other people but I still have a problem with it, like funding someone who lost their house in a storm versus gambling it all away.

Regarding Sundance, as irritating as I find him he is still arguably on our side and isn't wrong all the time.

Chinese constitutional scholar detained and questioned after criticizing the government online

A Chinese constitutional scholar was temporarily "taken away" and questioned by police Sunday after posting an open letter criticizing the Chinese communist government's response to the coronavirus pandemic.

In the widely circulated letter — which was viewed by the South China Morning Post but has since been removed from social media sites — Zhang Xuezhong, 43, reportedly called on China's legislature to carry out political reforms such as instituting freedom of speech.

He wrote that in the absence of a modern constitution, China's governance was backward and that "the outbreak and spread of the COVID-19 epidemic is a good illustration of the problem."

Zhang also slammed the Chinese government's police state tactics such as silencing early whistleblowers amid the outbreak.

"Twenty-two days before the [lockdown] in the city, Wuhan was still investigating and punishing citizens who had disclosed the epidemic, including Dr. Li Wenliang ... showing how tight and arbitrary the government's suppression of society is," he wrote.

A day after posting the letter on his WeChat, Zhang was removed from his Shanghai home by police, according to friends.

"He was taken away on Sunday night. Three police cars came to his house," said Wen Kejian, a close friend of Zhang who is also an independent political analyst.

Another friend, who remained anonymous confirmed that Zhang had been taken into police custody, but said that "he [was] mentally prepared after his open letter."

matt - deplore me if you must

neologisming sounds gross.

One of the best concerts with the hottest 30 somethings ever that I went to was INXS at the Greek.

The media set to forget that the Obama administration was caught spying on Members of Congress and reporters long before there was a whiff of Russian collusion. SOP. Chicago style deep dish corruption.

The same holds true with the Big Lies they got caught in with F&F and Benghazi. They knew their acolytes would bury or soon the stories away.

This time they are well and truly screwed and it couldn't happen to a nicer bunch of statists.
