SC just issued an emergency order to release the hairdresser from jail. Never seen so much outrage in my life - everyone in the TX govt was on TV last night going nuts. Good.

Bye bye Judge.

Dave (in MA)

Now hairdresser will find out that she contracted Wu while in the slammer.

Old Lurker

A-bob, I think some of us were saying the same thing even before game day, and have not changed since. So no 20/20 hindsight involved.

Why would anybody want to live in a country where the decisions of the leader of the moment are beyond question. Those societies do exist elsewhere and have for thousands of years. We are not one of them.

"You're my excuse to drink at lunch today! ;-)"

We are drinking at lunch today? Oh good! I think that's soon!

Now hairdresser will find out that she contracted Wu while in the slammer.

If so, she’ll have a pro bono legal team lining up at her door to sue the ever-lovin’ snot out of the judge, county, state et al.

Reasons why CDC guidance was shelved:
1. Guidelines say states should not reopen while their Covid cases are increasing.
2. Trump admin wants states to reopen regardless.
3. White House does not want to be accountable, and guidelines would make them so.

Steph-the Publix I was at yesterday at 7 had good supplies.

Well, I’m not drinking at noon today, but in honor of jimmyk’s 60th b-day, this evening I’ll open up my last 1960 Latour...

First off, it's a lame strawman to claim I or anyone else here thinks Trump is God or has god-like powers.

With the apparent exception of OL, there isn't one person here with a functional crystal ball who possessed all the information and scientific evidence that has been collected over the past 2 months back in February/early March timeframe that would allow them to make an informed decision on the proper course of action to take.

Trump was forced to make a decision based on what limited information he had available to him at the time. OL and others now criticize that decision with 20/20 hindsight. Since Trump continues to insist that the social distancing shutdown was the right decision to make, what purpose does the constant criticism serve other than to undermine Trump?

The people in charge while we are shut down. Cudahy version.

Gee, criticism of stupidity might be directed at correcting ongoing poor decisions. Which Trump makes on occasion. This shutdown is a doozie.

Tom R

Henry @ 12:26

Portraying Trump as stupid is what Progtards and NeverTrumpers do.

Old Lurker

Henry, thank you for noting the decision was stupid, not the decider.

Words matter.

He chose poorly, based on incomplete info.

Mel and RSE...

the Buddig site itself says out of stock for the beef at Walmart - I guess that means nationwide...

Kroger was out this morning and has been for weeks.

Walmart was my next try...

I'll hit Publix later today and see. I bought the last two packages of Hillshire Farms thin sliced beef at Kroger. Way more expensive than the $.50 a pack at Kroger/Walmart for Buddig.

But overall the 'hang up' prepacked deli was mostly out. Last week it was the hot dog section which was better today.

The butcher shop in Loganville said yesterday that prices are spiking and gave as an example Sirloin Steaks... they buy it bulk and cut in house and it went from $7.99 a lb to $15.99 a lb. in two weeks. Boxed meats are hard for them to come by (whatever that means?) but they can still get slabs. They were out of ground beef, but only because they sold all they had ground up that morning and had not had a chance to grind up more. 3 person per limit in store and about 5 people waiting outside to enter. I bought a whole filet and they trimmed and cut it for me.

They were also out of chicken after I bought the last 5 lbs of boneless breasts. Not even any wings or drumsticks.

I am now stocked for 45 nights of dinners if the need arises. We tend to eat out 3-4 nights a week so that should set me up for several months - assuming the restaurants don't start having shortages.

RSE... check out farmersandfishermen website. They are part of Halpern's group and supply Buckhead Rest Group and are now doing home delivery and their prices are surprisingly decent. And the quality is BRG superb.

From the founder:

Message From the Owner of Farmers & Fishermen, Kirk Halpern

"Farmers & Fishermen has been getting a lot of questions lately in regards to our current supply and ability to continue servicing the community through our Home Delivery Service. On our April 29th Newsletter, I shared the Chairman of Tyson Foods remarks that "the food supply chain is breaking."

Our Company has acted proactively on securing staple meat items such as beef and chicken. With that said, the market is experiencing something I have never seen before in my 31+ years in the meat business - we are at a 40-year high. We are dedicated in continuing to take care of your family on nutritious products of the highest quality levels. Please know I believe you'll find that some of our prices on certain items have been adjusted. We are taking every measure we can to flatten the curve within this up-market. Thank you for your support" - Kirk Halpern, Founder & CEO

Is this better?

Accusing Trump of making stupid decisions is what Progtards, NeverTrumpers and OL does.

Of course they strip out the context

China Accuses U.S. Of ‘Blame Games’, Reiterates Opposition To Coronavirus Origin Investigation

President Trump has confirmed U.S. Intelligence will continue its probe into China’s role in the alleged cover-up of the coronavirus.

Meanwhile, a spokeswoman for China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has pointed the finger at the U.S. for playing what she called “blame games.”

While speaking Wednesday, the Hua Chunying claimed China worked in a timely manner to make the facts quite clear about the coronavirus. She also said the country has also cooperated internationally with epidemic prevention and control.

Chunying even went on to address reports, some of which are coming from top levels of U.S. government, regarding the country’s effort to conceal knowledge about the virus for personal gain.

“The claims that China is concealing the epidemic situation, delaying notification to the world and making benefits from the outbreak are sheer nonsense,” she stated. “China has always maintained an open, transparent and responsible attitude.”

The spokeswoman went on to reiterate China’s opposition to an investigation into the origins of the virus by calling it a “hasty international inquiry under the presumption of guilt.”

Nothing says openness and transparency like refusing to participate in an inquiry.

Early on in the -19 fiasco, it was unknowable as to whether the hospitals would be overrun.

Once it became clear that wasn’t going to happen, it was too late:

1) The media latched on to the “gotta shutdown until a vaccine” narrative.

2) Fauci and Birx endeared themselves to the public.

3) Trump got distracted by trees (ventilators) in the forest (getting effed over by the 90% of DC that hates his guts).

How many sick and dead would we have if all our big cities had the same as the NYC area?

Someone needs to nail down why they were so much worse before the next virus hits.

I must have struck a nerve. Once again TK trying to instigate drama and put me on the defensive. Nice try.

Early on in the -19 fiasco, it was unknowable as to whether the hospitals would be overrun.

Finally someone who acknowledges the reality that Trump was facing.

Once it became clear that Trump's social distancing policy successfully flattened the curve and prevented the healthcare infrastructure from getting overwhelmed, Trump released new "back to work" guidance that factored in all the new information and evidence acquired in the time that elapsed after the initial decision was made.

Boxed meats are hard for them to come by (whatever that means?) but they can still get slabs.

Shortly after I partied myself right out of college, I cut meat for a few years, first in a meat processing plant where forequarters and hindquarters were broken down into smaller pieces that were then sent out as boxed beef to various supermarkets. Then, I briefly worked in a supermarket where that boxed beef is broken down and cut into steaks. Hips for example might come 2 or 3 to a box and then cut up into New York Sirloins with the help of a bandsaw.

Slabs, dunno, maybe that's what they call a forequarter or a hindquarter?

I’ll let you go back to your non dramatic conversations, Tom.

Sorry for the interruption.

Old Lurker

Ralph "How many sick and dead would we have if all our big cities had the same as the NYC area? Someone needs to nail down why they were so much worse before the next virus hits."

Always good to learn from things like this.

Always good to also remember what we learned from the last ones. It is not an accident that the upper classes in Italy, France, Germany and Britain all knew it was safer to move to their country houses until the current plagues burned through the cities.

You ask about "big cities"...but look how many states have but one or two of those, if even that? And virtually none of them look like NYC in how they are built and work.

Point is, of course, that one size almost never fits all.

And that ain't news.

Old Lurker

Hey TK. Since he was dressed so colorfully and played music so nicely, the first few rats who followed the Pied Piper off the cliff to drown in the river were naturally just following their leader. How could you describe the rats at the back of the pack as anything but stupid to do the same?

The front rats can blame the leaders. The rats at the back have only themselves to blame.

Lots of rats in the middle of the pack probably wish the rats behind them had spoken up about their doubts if they had them so most of the rats might have survived.

Old Lurker

My Boston kids report the same, Rocco.

Ralph, density, sheer size (21 million in the metro area), and international travel. No other place in the US has that combo. But don't ask me why Tokyo didn't have the same experience.

Tom R

OL @ 1:10

Since I don't possess TK's skills at finding old posts, can you tell us when in February/early March that you informed JOM that there was nothing to worry about from COVID 19 and that it was a mistake on Trump's part to do what he felt was the right thing in protecting Americans from what the people in Wuhan and Italy were going thru?

I keep wondering why Vancouver, BC didn’t get slammed with the WuFlu. I was there a decade ago and the city was exploding with growth from wealthy Chinese buying up high rise condos.

It was Trump's solution to prevent the healthcare infrastructure from getting overwhelmed which was stated up front as the primary goal.

It was not. Trump didn't shut down anything.

The governors and mayors are responsible for the shutdowns.

Do you guys think "SChiff is in panic mode"? That's the headline all over TV

Someone needs to nail down why they were so much worse before the next virus hits.

Not shutting down or cleaning the subways, and in fact reducing the number of trains thus increasing the density on each train, probably had a major impact.

I’m pretty sure this has been brought up:

Pretty damning.

Why would a Schiff be in panic mode? As if the media would focus on anything bad about him. Life with a free pass doesn’t lead to panic.

Yes, narciso, but there have been emergency declarations and no shutdowns in the past.

Several of the emergencies are still ongoing.

This is on the governors.

You all need to tell any and everybody who will listen that Gretchen Whitmer CAUSED hundreds--perhaps thousands--of the deaths in Michigan--the highest in the midwest.
By far.

She threatened to pull licenses from pharmacists who filled HCQ scripts,as well as the docs who wrote them. On March 26.
Not too many docs would put a pharmacist in the position of losing his livelihood, even if they were willing to risk theirs.

So, she prevented what has empirically proven to be an effective treatment of early Covid.
SHE is who caused those people to get so sick they had to go to hospitals, where they died.
SHE made a political matter out of what should have remained a medical decision.

Let her take responsibility for the consequences of her decisions.

Throwing Texans in jail whose biz's shut down through no fault of their own is wrong.

I am eliminating jail for violating an order, retroactive to April 2, superseding local orders.

Criminals shouldn’t be released to prevent COVID-19 just to put business owners in their place.

— Greg Abbott (@GregAbbott_TX) May 7, 2020

The governors and mayors are responsible for the shutdowns.

The Feds incentivized the shutdowns with Covid Bucks by the trillions. How long would the lockup have lasted if Trump gave the bill the middle finger treatment?

The blame at this point is shared, IMO. But Trump could have stopped it. Instead, he chewed Massie a new asshole for requesting that the constitution be followed.

Grewsome gettin' his brown shirt on;
'Every One of Them': California Begins Forcibly Quarantining People – Separating Families – Over COVID-19

On Wednesday, the soft voice of Ventura County Health Director Robert Levin confirmed that the forcible quarantines are underway. He announced a “pilot program that will grow into a larger program” and “we will find everyone with COVID-19 and we will isolate every one of them and we will make sure that they stay quarantined and we will check in with them every day. In other words, what this program means is we’re going to do a more complete job, we’re going to do a more meticulous job of making it less and less possible for others in the county to run into someone with COVID-19 infection.”

Levin said that we also realize that as we get more contacts, “some of the people are going to have trouble with being isolated, for instance, if they live in a home where there’s only one bathroom, and there are three or four other people living there and those people don’t have COVID infection we’re not going to be able to keep the person in that home. Every person whom we’re isolating, for instance, needs to have, uh, their own bathroom. And so we’ll be moving people like this into other kinds of housing that we have available. They’ll also have other needs perhaps – food, whatever it’s going to be – the county will be there to back them up and to support them.”

Isolation and Quarantine

The Centers for Disease Control says there is precedent for forcibly removing people and locking them up in quarantine:

Isolation and quarantine help protect the public by preventing exposure to people who have or may have a contagious disease.

Isolation separates sick people with a quarantinable communicable disease from people who are not sick.
Quarantine separates and restricts the movement of people who were exposed to a contagious disease to see if they become sick.

In addition to serving as medical functions, isolation and quarantine also are “police power” functions, derived from the right of the state to take action affecting individuals for the benefit of society.
Federal Law

The federal government derives its authority for isolation and quarantine from the Commerce Clause of the U.S. Constitution.

Under section 361 of the Public Health Service Act (42 U.S. Code § 264), the U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services is authorized to take measures to prevent the entry and spread of communicable diseases from foreign countries into the United States and between states.

The authority for carrying out these functions on a daily basis has been delegated to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

the U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services is authorized to take measures to prevent the entry and spread of communicable diseases from foreign countries into the United States and between states.

That's not a legal slam dunk.

Btw, does that mean mandatory testing for all Californians? Even in downtown Oakland? Heh. I'd like to see them try that.

Btw, the "and between states" part implies that Trump could have locked down NY state.
