Kev: That reached my ears in '68. I'd just turned 13 and was in my 3rd year of burying 19 year old Marines and Army dead from The Nam.

Yeah. Fifty-two years ago. That was the summer before my Senior year in college when I wrote my CO application. At the time, I believed [naively, it turns out] that it was the job of the United Nations to keep peace in the world, not of single nations.

They were bound and determined they were going to draft me as my grandfather had once served on the draft board. My attorney, Marvin Karpatkin, considered it one of the best applications he had ever seen.

I have changed my views since then, and written a book or two that lay things out pretty clearly.

James D.

Wisconsin says, due to lockdown, it will give driver's licenses to teens without making them take a road test

THIS is the kind of nonsense that makes me scream and call for guillotines etc etc etc.

It's SO stupid and offensive and harmful to the public on every level.

First, it's endangering the public by allowing drivers on the road who are not properly qualified.

Second, since there's a lockdown, the teens who'd be given these licenses don't have anywhere to go anyway, so what the hell does it matter if they have their licenses or not?

Third, why does the policy only apply to teens? Shouldn't it apply to anyone who wants a license but doesn't have one yet?

Fourth, if the state will give licenses to teens (the most unsafe group of drivers, as SCIENCE has proven time and again) without a test now, then why should there ever be a test for anyone?

Fifth, will the driving test administrators now be fired, since their services are clearly no longer wanted by the state?

Sixth, do any of the clowns who came up with this plan have an IQ above room temperature?

Porchlight

I have a flip phone so no one expects me to use it for work. And no one's going to pay for a work phone. So, it's a win.

Meanwhile my coworkers complain about having to do so much work from home. Why? Because they use their personal phone to do work, and because they don't turn off work email notifications. These are not people required to work from home, on the whole. They just do it anyway because they have martyr complexes. No sympathy from me.

Porchlight

It is outrageous, James D.

There is no demand for teen driving right now - they're not going to get jobs anytime soon and they don't have to go to school.

I know - I have a 16 year old who doesn't even have a learners' permit yet because she takes the bus to school, when there is school. She can't yet visit her friends or go shopping or out to eat. There is nowhere for her to go right now. If she were to get her old job back, maybe, but the bus works great for that and is free. And her job is at my library which is closed for the summer.

Makes no sense - except revenue from drivers' license fees?

The $2.2 trillion coronavirus relief law, the CARES Act, gives an extra $600 a week in federal aid to unemployed workers.
That enhancement ends after July 31. In some states, it ends a week earlier.
After that, jobless workers would just get their state unemployment benefit only. Prior to Covid-19, that state benefit replaced roughly 40% of prior wages for the average worker.

"Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer on Tuesday issued a warning to residents after seven registered sex offenders who he said were "high-risk" were recently released from custody early, amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Spitzer said the convicted men spent "just days" in jail ...

The inmates who were released are:

Luis Joel Ramirez, 27 -- his criminal history includes sexual battery...

Rudy William Grajeda Magdaleno, 39 -- his criminal history includes child molestation, indecent exposure, assault, battery

Kyle Albert Winton, 40 -- his criminal history includes annoying or molesting a child, criminal threats to cause great bodily injury or death...

Jose Adrian Oregel, 46 -- his criminal history includes unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor, oral copulation of a person under the age of 18 and causing great bodily injury.

Read CH’s 3:35 and 3:45 and tell me the country is not too far gone.

At the same time that local governments are releasing highly dangerous sex offenders back into the community to prey on citizens, they are sending actual armored vehicles out to close down bars that dared to open up for customers.

In the eyes of our elected and bureaucratic officials, cutting hair and pouring drinks are crimes that demand an immediate and forceful response, but rape and murder are a-ok.

"OK, what if the Chinese had a long-term plan ..."

That reminded me, I had a mini-screed about Chinese ownership here.

OL, I very much want property rights respected, virtually sacrosanct. I want that in America and between Americans.

I care not about the property rights of Chinese in America. Why? Because China cares not about the property rights of Americans in China. Chinese businesses and government are among the biggest thieves in the world. If an American chooses to try and own property in China, well, you bought that ticket so you take that risk and ride.

If *any* activity is identified that points toward Chinese gameplaying with US property, to the detriment of America and Americans, I have zero problem with confiscating that property and auctioning it off to provably American interests.

Sorry, he is just plain wrong about this unless he is willing to say it was done to us on purpose:

https://www.foxnews.com/politics/trump-coronavirus-worse-than-pearl-harbor-9-11-attacks

If his complaint is China should have told us sooner, sure, but that is not an attack (like Pearl Harbor and 9-11 just in case you thought he meant some broader, softer use of the word). Is there a written rule somewhere that makes it an act of war to not tell the world about some bug currently infecting some people in that country?

If that is how he wants to use the words, then what about previous flus to include the Spanish Flu - was than an attack on us by Spain and if so, that was a lot bigger.

He needs to apply the rule of holes.

This is not like him, frankly.

OL @ 4:37

Do you think Trump came up with that talking point off the cuff and on the fly or do you think he and his advisors strategized what he was going to say?

Words matter and Trump's decision to use "attack" is IMO encouraging his supporters to read between the lines. See MM's earlier post with the multiple "what ifs" for reference.

Extraneus

Yes.

I would agree on the Pearl Harbor thing, but they've been using some strong language with China lately. I think Grennell said there would be a "reckoning" a couple of weeks ago. Yesterday a WH spokesman said China's actions "would not be forgotten." Trump himself said they were "culpable." Surely there's an overall strategy in play.
