Washington recovers $300M in fraudulent unemployment claims
Washington officials say the state has recovered $300 million paid to criminals who used stolen personal information to file fraudulent unemployment benefit claims
I guess this was money still left in the US banking system. Hard to tell how much got exfiltrated earlier. I understand that not all of the scammers were top notch. A lot of them botched some of the steps needed to get the money out.
case in point:
"LeVine said that the state is recovering additional money from some of the victims of the identity theft who contacted officials after they received debit cards with unemployment benefits they didn’t apply for because the the impostor forgot to change the address on the account."

The plan would:
Reduce the share of aid money small business are required to spend on payroll from 75% to 60% (the PPP’s architects aimed to encourage companies to keep workers employed)
Extend the window businesses have to use the funds from two months to six months
Push back a June 30 deadline to rehire workers
Extend the time recipients have to repay the loan
Let companies that get loan forgiveness defer payroll taxes

The average rate for the standard 30-year fixed mortgage fell to 3.15% on Thursday, according to Freddie Mac. It's a record low for the US mortgage rate.

re: mortgage rates
We have a floating rate loan on a property. At the last recalc it was raised substantially. We started a refi process which got caught in the shutdown and ultimately did not go through.
However, happy ending: the loan was recalculated again and went down below where it had been even before the uptick.

About PDJT's leverage due to control over H1B visa entries in the country.
This not only allows leverage over tech companies.
It could help US workers (voters) as well.
It seems likely that there will be a flood of tech layoffs. Many companies hard hit by a full quarter with meager revenues. And no guarantee of a one quarter slow down.
If there are many fewer Indian and other H1Bs allowed into the country there will be some number of jobs available to laid off US applicants.

My girlfriend filed for NJ UI on April 5th. That was the first time the website didn't go down, so her claim starts even earlier. She's only eligible for the federal money. Last she heard the claim was finally approved, but she still hasn't been paid. I calculate that they owe her roughly $5,400.
She calls almost every day trying to find out her status and usually hears bupkis, so the approval was welcome, but the recorded message hung up on her before she could get a payment date.
The mailed material sucks too. The latest one she showed was boiler-plate until at the bottom it showed you are scheduled for a phone interview on ___ at ___ and it was blank.

Jim S,
Good deal on the re-fi. All those cities with M names confuse me. Somehow I had Minneapolis stuck in my mind for the convention instead of Milwaukee.
The Hong Kong thing is interesting. My apolitical girlfriend must have seen something about it because she was peppering me with questions. She was aware of the prior protests, but not the context for them. So I went through the whole thing and what China is doing now.
She said, "They can't do that, from what you're telling me, they can't do that until 2047 when the interim agreement ends."
Yeah, hon, they can impose that because no one can stop them. She didn't think that was correct or fair. Your word should mean something.
I only mention this because I wonder if other apoliticals are waking up to this as more people pay attention to China.
So she has a nice sized chunk of money coming her way soon (hopefully) and she's realized that she doesn't want to spend it on anything made in China.

New record: 5/28 453,560 new CCP tests, 22,658 new cases, %positive 4.9%.
The old record was 441,027 on the 25th and then it fell off by a quarter the next two days. I guess there is a lag in reporting still.
NJ has been reporting that we are in the 5-7% positive range and that about 20,000 tests are being done each day. So they find roughly 1,000 new cases per day and that has become a useless metric by now. It says nothing about the seriousness of the new cases.
Small business owners in NY and NJ are in near revolt mode, especially the restaurant owners. Municipalities are revising local ordinances to allow outside dining on what would normally be "city property" like sidewalks, streets and parking lots.

On bureaucracies: "...the average citizen does not like it when this kind of bureaucratic nonsense lands on their own head. Sure, many think it is great when mean, ugly corporation has to form an entirely new department just to deal with government paperwork, but they do not care for it much when they have been out of work for 3 months and have run out of savings – then the paperwork is just an obstacle."
This seems to be a popular refrain with small business people in blue states like NY and NJ. Blue states are usually more bureaucratic and, yet, they haven't even finalized the rules for re-opening.
A closed restaurant owner has had 3 months to think about how to re-open the business safely. Is ready to do so and can't.
You don't need to know the final rules because you can't open yet anyway.
