More frameworks on the pandemic. Notice it is being used as the pretext to "redesign our economies".
Here are three ways we can avoid fueling polarization and open up space for ideas and action.
1. Focus on your big ideas and stay far from the fray.
Controversy and conflict stories come at a cost: they distract from critical public health and public policy discussions. If partisan confrontation comes to dominate discussions of the pandemic, it will crowd out ideas that we need to flourish right now: solidarity, equity, and redesigning our economies.
Engaging in culture war commentary isn't the best use of our limited communications opportunities. A steady stream of stories analyzing the polarization problem doesn't wash it away - it channels energy and attention to it. Most people want to stay out of rhetorical conflicts, preferring discourse that is even-toned and inclusive. We can offer them a chance to join a conversation without having to pick sides.
We need to focus, not fracture, our framing. Cut through the chaos by staying on message. Concentrate communications on important ideas about the pandemic itself and how we need to respond to solve problems.
Cut through with messages
about what matters
"The COVID-19 crisis has shown how vital it is that our governments are prepared to protect us from harm - and to take action in a focused, far-sighted way. At this critical moment in the pandemic, we need government to concentrate its attention and action on what lies ahead. This means putting people's wellbeing first, setting policies and issuing health guidance based on evidence. It means doing the hard work of redesigning our economies around what we really value: greater security, fuller participation, and a healthy environment."

Posted by: Marlene | May 29, 2020 at 07:45 AM
2. Keep using a big, generous "we."
The most powerful response to divisive voices is to maintain a stance of interdependence.
Keep making the pandemic a story about solidarity and our shared resolve to do what's right. Stick to talking about everyone's wellbeing. Show that your concern is for everyone, not just those who agree with you or those who are following the rules.
Don't let us-vs-them triggers creep into your communications, even in efforts to connect with your audience. Judgmental, emotional reactions (outrage, indignation, shock) invite defensiveness. They nudge people to identify with one group and dismiss or devalue others.
Invite people to understand
how we need to cooperate
"The pandemic has shown us how everyone's health depends on cooperation. As we begin to move through society more, we must keep working together to slow the spread of virus. One vital action is masking our mouths and noses when in public. Droplets from our breath could carry the virus without us realizing it. A cloth face covering prevents them from landing on people or surfaces. Other people's masks protect us, and our masks protect other people."
Posted by: rse | May 29, 2020 at 07:46 AM
rse @ 7:44
That quote is exactly what the MSM allowed Zero to do for 8 years, to pretend he's above the fray and objective and calm and talking solutions...making anyone who disagrees with his "solutions" into the problem who is causing polarization and needs to be silenced to keep the peace.
Posted by: James D. | May 29, 2020 at 07:49 AM
3. Respond judiciously to instances of resistance and non-compliance.
Our perceptions of what other people are - or are not - doing matter tremendously. These perceptions inform our behavior and attitudes. Given that people's attitudes and behaviors have life-or-death effects during the pandemic, it's critical that our communications help shape social norms that work in the interests of public health.
When we share vivid stories or images of "bad behavior," we give the false impression that it is widespread - and therefore, socially acceptable. This makes it easier for people to justify ignoring public health guidance.
Stories of "those people" engaging in behavior that threatens "us" come with other risks, too. They give rise to rancor and deepen divisions. They heighten the atmosphere of fear - and relocate its source, from the virus to each other.
We need to be careful in deciding whether, when, and how to share stories about behavior that's out of step with public health measures. In most cases, our energy is best spent on normalizing the kinds of actions that are necessary to reduce harm, save lives, and drive a just recovery.
Normalize what people and governments should be doing
"As a nation we're staying the course because we know what's at stake - everyone's health and wellbeing. With the virus still present, straying from the path now would jeopardize lives and make economic recovery harder. This is why we're looking to our leaders for clear and consistent guidance that protects our health. We're looking for creative approaches to strengthening communities in this difficult time. We're looking for the compassion to support the people hurting the most, and the courage to drive a recovery plan that puts people first."

Today, the COVID-19 pandemic is pushing Americans’ cultural bias against older people to new heights. We’ve seen leaders suggest that grandparents are expendable in the name of economy. The hashtag #BoomerRemover emerged and started trending in mid-March as a way to mark and make light of ageist comments about the pandemic. And Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director general of the World Health Organization, had to repeatedly address public opinion that COVID-19 was not a serious concern because of initial public beliefs that it affected only older people.

Twitter could not be doing more to highlight the threat to free speech in first targeting a political tweet on main-voting and then targeting a second tweet under the ambiguous standard of “glorifying violence.” ...
...Twitter had the chance to return to neutrality but it is more concerned with expressing its views than preserving its forum. I would not care about such self-inflicted wounds but free speech is likely suffer the collateral damage from Twitter's glorifying speech controls.

https://www.powerlineblog.com/archives/2020/05/minneapolis-meltdown.php
Riots, looting, arson, vandalism, violence, destruction, and robbery continued for a third night in Minneapolis following the death of George Floyd at the of hands of the Minneapolis police. We have quickly moved beyond “protests” to the shame and disgrace of a terroristic crime spree from which we will be a long time recovering.
The Third Precinct police headquarters at 30th and Minnehaha was torched and burned to the ground — the authorities let it burn to the ground. Law enforcement is invisible. We have reverted to a Hobbesian state of nature a la Lord of the Flies. Martha MacCallum played footage the looting during her interview with Kyle Hooten on her FOX News show early last night. Alpha News has posted the video here.
The crime spree spread from Minneapolis to St. Paul and points elsewhere. More than 170. St. Paul businesses have been looted or damaged while dozens of fires have been set. St. Paul had nothing to do with the death of George Floyd. It is nothing more than a criminal target of opportunity.
Suburban malls fear they might be next. Civic order has broken down with astonishing speed. Mob rule has descended. The forces of order have withdrawn.
Boy mayor Jacob Frey elected to let the Third Precinct headquarters burn. The mayor declared at a hastily called press conference that he had “made the decision to evacuate the building.” He philosophized like a college sophomore: “The symbolism of a building cannot outweigh the importance of life.” He liked the thought so much he reiterated it this way: “Brick and mortar is not as important as life.”

Another Bob,
Seemed rather bizarre to me, too. Next we will find out that they have their own police units.
Target's original sites here were purchased from the old department store L.S. Ayres, who opened them as discount stores as opposed to their upscale department stores downtown and in the luxury malls of the suburbs. They were originally Ayr-Way stores, and for a long time I didn't even know that Target was headquartered in Minneapolis.

I saw plenty of NY and Mass. license plates up here in the middle of nowhere while doing errands yesterday. They're already here! The restaurant owners in Portland are furious. So we finally have our own Mogadishu. They planted it right in the middle of perhaps the most welcoming state in the union.
Why is it that the reaction every time seems to be looting and arson? Some poor Kirean grocer or store owner gets ripped off and this is their cry for justice?
There comes a point when justice must be equally applied to all and we are past that point. Do the crime. Do the time. With surveillance cameras we can identify the ones without umbrellas and masks and track down the others.
Show up at these assholes doors with a iPad and ask them "is this you?" in the video and haul them downtown for 30 or 60 days.
