Jim_nj wrote this last night (yeah I’m hopelessly behind) and I thought it interesting enough to post about our little case study statistics. I quoted his post in its entirety for context.
I've been think about the meat-packing plant outbreaks. These tend to be located in smaller rural communities. I wonder if it's not just the conditions in the plants that led to the spread, but that these workers probably also socialized outside of the work environment.
There was at least one report of an employee who was sent home as a precaution who set up a bar in his garage and entertained his friends there.
It would seem like an interesting project for a young epidemiologist to research.
I mean I know the unions want to demonize the plants, but the virus didn't, I assume, spontaneously arise in the plants without an outside influence. Somebody brought it in.
How did the infection spread? Inside of the plant, outside of the plant, or some combination thereof. For future use we really should nail this down and get past the talking points
I’ve been watching our little town for the last four weeks as cases have unfolded. We are up to 104 positive, with 65 recovered, and only one hospitalization. Today was the second time they announced recoveries, with 39 active cases. The other day that they told us recoveries was on Wednesday, with 89 positive and 50 recovered, which means that people are recovering as fast as we are finding new cases. Once they found the first pork plant case and started contact tracing we started above 40% positive on tests, and then we leveled out at around 30% or so for a couple of weeks. The plant has now tested all employees, and over the last 4 days we’ve done 146 new tests with only 15 positive, so we are down to a 10% positive rate. We did get 2 nursing home employees as positive, but the 10 cases in the 60-80 age bracket were probably elderly members of multi-generational households including pork plant employees. The last two in that age bracket were 4/30 & 5/1, and they were probably before people got serious about quarantines.
This is a small town — 9,000 in town, 17,000 in the county. Many of the pork plant employees are immigrants. The Mexicans are mostly related to each other and are 2nd generation. We have Chin and West Africans as well who are more recent, but still mostly have been here 5-10 years, which means that language is not too large a barrier. (Plenty of well-educated bilingual folks.) Contact tracing is quite doable, and with only one hospitalization we seem to be on a reasonable trajectory.
I think that we’d be an excellent case study, as we are sparsely populated enough that contact tracing is quite effective. What we are seeing is that casual contact doesn’t seem to be spreading the virus. Those cases in NYC were we saw scary examples where it looked like one asymptomatic person was infecting dozens with casual contact might be really misleading. Maybe it was that people were coming up against dozens of asymptomatics one after another, and while any one or two of those contacts would have been harmless, they were getting hit by the virus over and over.
The WSJ has an article focused on permanent manufacturing plant closings. Several family owned businesses featured. Recovery becomes more difficult every day the economy does not reopen.
“But on the other hand, water vapor has a buoyancy effect which helps release the heat of the atmosphere to space and reduce the degree of warming. Without this lightness of water vapor, the climate warming would be even worse.”
It’s product is marginal, it’s business practices are highly questionable, and it still loses money on every sale. It’s losing EV share in Europe, which will eventually be reflected here.
My understanding of Tesla’s business model is that it’s essentially a ponzu scheme. He needs the money from preorders of the next wave of cars (not yet being produced) to pay for the production of cars previously ordered. That seems...not sustainable.
Add that to Musk’s public persona, which makes it appear that what he really wants to do is not sell cars, but to do whatever project the voices in his head suggest that he focus on today, which might have nothing whatsoever to do with the project he’s been working on (and raising money for) for the last few months, and may be abandoned tomorrow when the voices in his head get bored with it. That may not be reality, but it’s an image he has taken great pains to cultivate.

Over the weekend, I came across a piece about an Italian pathologist who had done autopsies on 21 COVID-19 fatalities. His results .. COVID-19 isn't really a respiratory aliment as much as it is a circulatory aliment. He found that it attacked the small membranes in your lungs and arteries causing them to clog up to the point that oxygen was being transported because the blood wasn't moving it.
He recommended steroids (which WHO recommended against) and blood thinners.
If I were Trump’s greasy director of Kabuki Sales, I would instruct him to have a Twitter “Lock Him Up!! Lock Him Up!!” Rally to keep the concert goers satiated, while planning a retaliation against China that would occupy the news cycle enough that he really wouldn’t have to lock any top dog up.

“ Doctors in MLB study found that only .7 percent of MLB employees tested had antibodies for Covid 19 — so less than 1 percent — and 0 have died. It’s the biggest national study to date, which gave a peek at the national prevalence.”
Based on what is known by the public at this time, declaring this an Act of War by China on the US only serves to provide cover for the LUNACY of the response of our 51 chief executives.
Since we are not about to launch a military response against China based on what some might suspect at this time, then the best we can hope for is that we use this as ample justification for removing China from the supply chain for anything that can even smell "strategic".
If the world eventually concludes that this was an Act of War on the entire world, then all bets are off as to collecting "damages" from the aggressor.
But until those things develop, Job #1 has to be to restart our economy and hope we can breath some life into the parts of the Engine of the World that might remain.
The fact that Mary McCord would actually try to peddle such nonsense in the NYT only proves something I learned three times in my career with the Justice Department – at the end of a second Presidential term, after all the “talented” people have departed, people like Mary McCord ascend to positions of authority, and they make your life miserable over that final weeks and months of the outgoing Administration.
Sounds about right.
At SWC’s twitter he has asked people to tweet his article to Patterico. One person responded to SWC and said “I don't even know who that is and I'm blocked lol.”
Lots of character actors who had recurring bit roles on Seinfeld have died. I always thought it a nice touch that Seinfeld had comedian Sandy Baron on the show. His 60s sitcom about a comedian in a New York apartment, "Hey Landlord" was a precursor to Seinfeld by twenty five years. Len Lesser, who played Uncle Leo also died.

Good Morning! Yay! We have internet. The satellite tech adjusted the transponder *this* much.
Earlier this morning I listened to local radio hosts take calls from listeners. A man with an iconic Maine accent asked,"do you fellas think Obama "worked" at setting up this coup or did it just come naturally to him?" I cracked up,because just the way the guy asked the question was so matter of fact. Ha,the cranky Yankees down at the coffee shop have it all figured out.
That is hilarious! Some of us Hoosiers have it figured out, too. The reason I brought up Loretta Fuddy was that my friend here in Indy and I think her death was suspicious.
"only .7 percent of MLB employees tested had antibodies for Covid 19"
Disappointing!
Other serological tests found unexpectedly high numbers of people with antibodies. Which implied tons of people were already recovered, and further implied that the number of people who die from WuFlu is tiny (IFR, infection fatality rate).
The pro Shutdown forces will be using the MLB study to argue we need to stay in hunker mode.

(1 of 2) The nation is correctly focused on the lawlessness of the Obama administration, but Americans should not forget that the reason General Flynn was fired the first time by the Obama administration was because of his honesty, not because he lied.
(2 of 2) The FBI’s carefully constructed perjury trap came later in a Soviet-style attempt to slander Mr. Flynn with the antonym of his chief virtue.
I’ve gone over the edge. Earlier this morning I decided the Dems arranged for the virus to try and destroy Trump. Then I decided I must be nuts! Or am I?
henry, 10:22 in 2 weeks we'll see if the bar reopening leads to a spike in cases.
The first mass beach event in SoCal happened a couple weeks ago.
Lots of people but outside and reportedly pretty good about distancing behavior.
Orange County and LA County deaths/cases?
No spike.
Flat or even down a bit.
The pro Shutdown people on my NextDoor are reduced to arguing that "It would have WAY gone down if people had stayed home. Trending a bit down is actually UP because without the beach visits numbers woulda been down"
We're mocking them because that's not what they predicted at the time.
Over the weekend i read where the iconic dawg food label Kenil Ration was an entrepreneurial solution to the dead horse problem in America immediately following WWI.
Their dawg food made from the ponies was marketed to consumers as "lean red meat."
As seen in a video from Dr. Marty- veterinarian to the stars and dawg life extension guru through probiotics and champignon mushroom powder.
You can sit on MY ledge next to me! The Chinese would have no hesitation of scattering that virus, either to physically harm him or to destroy the economy causing him to lose the election. And they would be happy to enlist the aid of the Dems!
I don't trust the CCP and they are desperate to hang onto power, just like the Dems. How do we know that Harvard Chemistry Head didn't help his Chinese grad students to perfect it? What about those 2 Chinese guys who were smuggling vials of some sort of biological liquid out of the country and were arrested at a NYC airport? How do we know they weren't smuggling those vials INTO the country?
No one has ever explained why the Chinese prohibited planes from flying from WuHan to Beijing or Shanghai, but had no problem letting them fly internationally. This makes it look to me like they targeted certain countries.
Now, the Dems are eager to get Trump unelected, and the Chinese think it will help them economically, so why not work together? That Harvard guy wasn't a Republican, I would wager.
jane: "Earlier this morning I decided the Dems arranged for the virus to try and destroy Trump"
Dems are not competent to do it.
Let's go with the Chinese offered to do it and the Dems gave them the OK.
Because Trump is literally Hitler. And most of the deaths would be in the anti-science deplorable Red states anyway.
Now THAT has a ring of plausibility about it!

The domestic flight Shutdown while allowing international flights is an interesting bit of info.

The pro-shutdown people on my Next Door Karens N.Buzkill are experiencing intense anal leakage (h/t our Beloved Frau) over Gav's current rendition of a 1 term governor.
I don’t think the Dems actively conspired with China to release the virus. They wouldn’t have to.
They’re always ready to respond to any event with the same policies: less free speech, more restrictions on law-abiding citizens, more controls on the economy, more loosening of immigration rules, more taxes, more aid to “marginalized” communities -always funneled through Dem mayors and governors and NGOs who skim a huge cut off the top.
Whether it’s a mass shooting or a disease or a hurricane or a wildfire or anything else you can name, the Dems have the same policy program ready to go, and the MSM has the sob stories and angry calls for change and reports on how minorities and women are hit the hardest and editorials blaming Republicans and white people and men and Christians, prewritten and ready to publish on command.

Are you a real persona or a TomR sock?
"only .7 percent of MLB employees tested had antibodies for Covid 19"
Disappointing!
Other serological tests found unexpectedly high numbers of people with antibodies. Which implied tons of people were already recovered, and further implied that the number of people who die from WuFlu is tiny (IFR, infection fatality rate).
The pro Shutdown forces will be using the MLB study to argue we need to stay in hunker mode.

Orange County and LA County deaths/cases?
No spike.

Jane,
You can sit on MY ledge next to me!
Posted by: MissMarple2 | May 11, 2020 at 10:42 AM
jane: "Earlier this morning I decided the Dems arranged for the virus to try and destroy Trump"
Dems are not competent to do it.
Let's go with the Chinese offered to do it and the Dems gave them the OK.
Because Trump is literally Hitler. And most of the deaths would be in the anti-science deplorable Red states anyway.
Now THAT has a ring of plausibility about it!

Whether it’s a mass shooting or a disease or a hurricane or a wildfire or anything else you can name, the Dems have the same policy program ready to go, and the MSM has the sob stories and angry calls for change and reports on how minorities and women are hit the hardest and editorials blaming Republicans and white people and men and Christians, prewritten and ready to publish on command.

n interesting article in the WSJ over the weekend. The big semiconductor companies are looking to re-shore much of their high tech chip manufacturing.
They don't even trust TSMC because it's too close to the mainland, I gather.Getting down to 7nm-5nm is horribly expensive and until recently TSMC were the leaders in capital expenditures.
Intel and Samsung (Austin) are both talking with the government. Hopefully others follow.
