The Obama administration’s response to the H1N1 virus was bungled with contradictory messages, a shortage of vaccines and fights over funding, according to Politico.

“It is purely a fortuity that this isn’t one of the great mass casualty events in American history,” Ron Klain, who was Biden’s chief of staff at the time, said of H1N1 in 2019 at a biosecurity summit. “It had nothing to do with us doing anything right. It just had to do with luck. If anyone thinks that this can’t happen again, they don’t have to go back to 1918, they just have to go back to 2009, 2010 and imagine a virus with a different lethality and you can just do the math on that.”

My brother memorized that entire movie when he was around 10 years old. Every word.

OL: But thanks for the gratuitous slam. Much appreciated.

Gratuitous? Not in the least. Just injecting a little humility.

I thought "never in the lifetime of anyone living" was a little presumptuous.

Or, of course, it simply could be hyperbolic.

You offer so much of value, but sometimes the embellishments distract from me getting to your points so I can embrace them. Filigree. Gingerbread. Clutter.

Tom R

But how do YOU account for the trillions of lost forever productivity, increased debt, or the sprinkling of free money from the sky?

That is the cost of Trump's strategy to handle the pandemic crisis.

How do you account for the positive benefits of:

1) The end of globalism due to the MAGA pill everyone was forced to take and who now understand how badly the DC Establishment from both parties sold out the country to the ChiComms?

2) The exposure of the Democrat, Progtard, Hollywood, Fake News, academia alliance with the ChiComms?

3) The exposure of social media platforms owned by leftwingers that engage in censorship?

If the goal is to win Culture War 2 and restore some semblance of the Constitutional Republic then outcomes that weaken your ideological enemy are desirable.

Old Lurker

I get it, SBW. I thought about that when I wrote it but posted it anyway.

The notion I was communicating was one of "permanent" harm whatever the future from this point is.

Point taken, though.

Lockdown Made Permanent To End Traffic Deaths For Good

Greetings from somewhere in Pennsylvania!
We left Florida Saturday afternoon. We're taking the overland route. The roads are empty except for the trucks. The trucks are keeping commerce moving, the truckers must love the empty roads. The lack of traffic is very weird. I've lost count of the electronic signs with helpful hints. Stay safe/Wash your hands/Stay home/ Save lives.
I enter the hotel room with my trusty can of Lysol and spray everything. :)

Yay, Joan!
Gorgeous pic!

I think one way to remember the pattern is to realize that the "angle bracket" tells TypePad that you're not doing simple text.
So what ARE you doing? Well the "img" says you are doing an image or photo.
OK, next question, what image? And then you say "src =" so that tells TypePad you're about to give it a URL location for the image.
So far you have
(angle-bracket)img src=
where angle-bracket is sometimes called "less than" because that's the math symbol.

OK, next you put in the URL for the image. We enclose it in quotes because the URL might have a space or special character in it, so having the quotes helps TypePad know when the URL begins and ends.

Last, you put a final closing-angle-bracket ("greater than"), so TypePad knows you are done.

And, one other thing: Typepad won't let you do ONLY AN IMAGE. You must have some text too. A lot of people here put a single dot on the first line, TypePad is OK with that.

MM,I'm so sorry about Maggie.

OL: "Thanks JimSV. I will slip an extra twenty your way."

Yah! And here I thought the going rate was a tenner.
Life. It's. Good!

IHME just changed up their state graphics. Does show their infection modeling was an order of magnitude too high.

All of a sudden their error bars are much smaller than previously.

This is interesting...we passed a convoy of shiny new school buses from Thomas Buses that are manufactured in North Carolina. The printing on the buses was in French, including "Ecoliers" on the rear window. The lead bus in the convoy was hauling a mini-van. We assume that the buses are headed to Quebec and the drivers will take the mini-van back to NC. We followed them for many miles,so made for an interesting conversation

Other than undermining the decisions Trump has made in how to deal with the pandemic, what useful purpose does OL's daily criticism, negativity and defeatism serve?

OL's value to me:
A perspective from someone who has to deal with reality and make decisions to deal with real world situations and consequences, to balance the rah rah rah stuff based on hope, wishful thinking, and to some degree, unicorn farts, at times.
Or that 4, 5 , 6 D white/black hat stuff.
#TwoWeeks is a thing for a very good reason.

Also, a view from someone who is the same line of work as POTUS.

If you can't read his posts without losing hope--that is YOUR problem, not his.

Let's get real here folks. The economy has TANKED. And yes, that IS Trump's economy. It ain't Obama's, it ain't Biden's, it ain't Pelosi's.
It's Trump's. He owns it.
He made the call to fall in line with Fauci and Birx.
(Based on what was known then--not criticizing POTUS--just stating the fact that it was HIS DECISION.)
If we don't open up soon--real soon--it's over. Like for years and years and years. I'm no economist--but that's the take I get from our resident one.

When we do open up, there are going to be more deaths. Which our fellow Leftist citizens will hang around POTUS's neck.

All this "greatest, most, best" testing stuff isn't going to make much difference--virus go viral. He needs to drop the best testing rah rah stuff and remind people that flattening the curve was NOT to reduce total infections, but to decrease the RATE of infections; to not swamp hospitals.
We did that--thank you for not drowning us frontline people in most of the USA--but people are going to be getting sick, all summer now, and people are going to continue to DIE.

He needs to remind people that we always knew that was coming; that is part of pandemics.

There isn't a soul on earth I can think of who could do a better job of making that all happen than DJT---but that doesn't mean we can't acknowledge how hard it will be to do it, or note his missteps along the way.

If it disrupts your preferred fairy tale--again, that is on you.

Bad place for Karens. MO has open records laws.

Glad you checked in Marlene. Thinking of you guys this morning cruising (okay being chauffeured )thru your hometown. For the record, Debby lift yesterday at 6;30 AM and is already in VT. Like you she had absolutely no traffic.

Matt Bracken comment under that Federalist piece on Flynn:

Dear FBI Special Agents: If a couple of upright, square-jawed, clean-cut Special Agents came to my house and politely knocked on my front door, and explained that terrorists had pulled a home invasion in the house down the way behind mine, where they were holding hostages and threatening to murder them, and the FBI needed to get access to my house to put surveillance on them... I would slam the door in their faces, and tell them to go to hell, because, based on recent history, I would assume they were lying through their teeth ["using a pretext:" it's not lying when Feds do it] in order to plant false evidence in my house, or to otherwise falsely entrap me. Maybe if there had been some FBI whistle-blowers during the past few years of abject FBI disgrace, I'd feel differently. But there were none, so I must assume you all are no different than KGB, Stasi or Gestapo goons, and you are just amoral LE mercenaries working for a paycheck and a pension. Prove different, and regain our respect, and your honor. As for now, you have neither.. And please dump your obsolete written 302 report system, which we all finally understrand is just the FBI's "license to lie." Since the 1960s, every small PD has been making audiotapes of controlled, sit-down witness interviews, and video since the 1990s. Why does the high-budget high-tech FBI use a century-old system? Because written 302s are the FBI's license to lie. FBI = Faking Bogus Investigations. Go to hell, Stasi goons.

I guess MM isn’t alone in her disgust about 302s.

We've seen so many empty parking lots at restaurants, malls, office buildings, churches and schools across several states. The economic fallout is terrible.

Mrs JimNorCal has come to an agreement with me on the size of our political donations this year.

What's the best way to donate to PDJT directly? I'd like to bypass the overhead of PACs.
Is this good:

I'm also looking for a way to help sane politicians in CA. I like Travis Allen, he's more of a pro-Trump guy than the CA RINOs. And I get email from a PAC with Travis' name on it, but again, I worry there is likely some hefty fund raising overhead involved. So, I'd enjoy hearing from any Californians with suggestions of effective and responsible organizations.

Beyond personalities, the Election Integrity Project (EIP-Ca) might be a good bet. Combating electoral fraud will be a huge effort this year, esp in CA. They appear to be tax-deductible too!

Tom R

If you can't read his posts without losing hope--that is YOUR problem, not his.

OL's posts have zero effect on my "hope" level. If you can't figure out the value of not undermining Trump's policies and decision making then that is on you.

This raises another question, too. Just how many of us see ourselves as ‘whistleblowers,’ while others see us as busybodies and collaborators in an encroaching police state?

I guess we know which side Morrissey is on.

He's Karen Morrissey to me from now on.

Jane, she doesn't stop? There is no way we could drive all night. I'd rather stop, get some sleep and leave at the crack of dawn. Scout is a good traveler but he isn't feeling good.

The Stasi have nothing on our Karen snitches but back then the snitchee was rounded up and became the subject of a firing squad. Things in history tend to re-evolve, so don’t be surprised things move in that direction.

We have already had these episodes of severe doxxing like in Patterico SWAT raid.

anonamom: "If it disrupts your preferred fairy tale--again, that is on you."

I don't know who that was aimed at -- but, I don't believe I said anything to OL about unicorn farts or fairy tales.

My thoughts were entirely with the gritty reality of the multiple-levels of people President Trump has to reach.

In your line of work, you were swamped with corona virus. What if it had been polio, ebola, hanta virus, measles, smallpox, tuberculosis, and, maybe a norovirus thrown in -- your message and treatment might not have been perfect.

I equate the left, the media, Hollywood, Democrats, and your garden-variety socialists/communists with those communicable diseases.

You and your messaging might not have bounced back immediately either.

Texas restaurant patron pays double for dinner, leaves $1,300 in tips

The man and his kin ordered with abandon, and chowed down on grub that included a filet mignon, seared scallops and grilled churrasco steak.

But when the hefty $337 bill arrived, he asked to be charged twice that amount, confounding waiter Josh Pikoff, 18, and leading owner David Fernandez to visit the table.

“He said, ‘Charge me double for everything’ and I asked, ‘Are you sure?’ ” Fernandez told CNN.

“He said, ‘Yes.’ ”

But the deep-pocketed customer wasn’t finished yet, tacking on a $300 tip for Pickoff and another $1,000 “for the house,” a photo of the receipt shows.

The total tab came to $2,029.

Pickoff told CNN that the man, a repeat customer, “said that he was extremely grateful that we were open and putting ourselves at risk to serve the community.”

Cash money says Amom was supporting OL from TomR LOL. Not aimed at you, I'm sure.

My feeling: if Tom R says something about OL and you agree then chime in. If you don't agree, then say "I disagree" or "I like OL because ...".

Responses in the form of "There you go AGAIN" seem to lead to vast, unproductive back and forth.

But that's just me.

Oops? Warren Buffett Gives Trump Ammo on Economic Comeback: ‘Nothing Can Basically Stop America’

Liberal billionaire Warren Buffett apparently doesn’t believe that the coronavirus will cripple the might of the U.S. economy in the long-run.

A prominent liberal business figure like Buffett voicing such sentiments provides ammunition to President Donald Trump, who also predicted that the economy is “going to make a very strong comeback.”

Buffett stated during a virtual shareholder meeting that “‘Nothing can basically stop America,’” according to CNBC. “‘The American miracle, the American magic has always prevailed and it will do so again.’” The implication here (intentional or not) is that the current economy is robust enough to beat back the fallout caused by states shutting down their economies indefinitely.

The billionaire provided further commentary:

"If you had to pick one time to be born and one place to be born ... you would not pick 1720; you would not pick 1820; you would not pick 1920. You’d pick today and you would pick America. Ever since America was organized ... people have wanted to come here."

The flurry of info about the CDC death count being only 37K ... is that a thing? Lefties are mocking the people that point it out, saying the stats are not being presented correctly.

Trump says he won’t extend social distancing guidelines
President Donald Trump said Wednesday the federal government’s coronavirus social distancing guidelines will be “fading out” when they expire Thursday, counting on states taking charge as they pivot to reopening .

I found the Racine County local incidence of Wuhan Flu map. 0-5 cases in the town where I get beer & groceries, 0-5 in the township south of me (I’m on the border), 5-10 in the township I’m in (have a couple old folks homes around), and a monster 10-15 in Burlington. The city of Racine is the hotspot in the county. Neighborhoods with over 100 cases. It seems to me that locking down Racine and a couple dozen people out here would be fine.

Maggie is gone. My son and daughter both went with us.

Her fur was matted from urine leaking over the last 2 nights when she slept on her side, and when I tried to take her on one last walk, her back legs collapsed twice in the space of 2 houses' yards. It was time.

The staff and the vet were extremely nice and understanding. They gave her a sedative to relax her so she wouldn't be scared, and then the final shot. She simply fell asleep and then quit breathing.

I am having her cremated and ashes in an urn, plus a paw print in clay which my daughter said she would paint and shellac for me, and a lock of fur.

I know this was the right thing to do, but boy, was it hard! Thanks to all of you for all the kind thoughts.

I know it seems overly sentimental, but Maggie was my companion once my now ex-husband started working overseas, and once he left me she was my only companion, until my daughter moved home.

As an English shepherd, she was exceptionally smart (smartest dog he had ever trained, said her trainer). She was 11 years old, which is pretty old for a larger dog.

So thanks again for the kindness. I really appreciate it.

MM, I am so sorry. They are our constant companions. 2 weeks ago I baked banana bread. I fogot that Moses, my male hound, is very long. No moe banana bread. Saturday I baked 4 loaves. One for us and 3 for our kids, who are spread from Santa Monica to Hollywood.

I pulled them off the shet=ltered shelf and put them on the dining room table to wrap in foil. As I went back to get the foil I heard a rustling sound and just caught his hindquarters running away. 1 1/2 loaves of banana bread left.

I dropped the one loaf off with ex #1. She's been a gem but is still batty. We talked about Moses and she mentioned that Nacho, my Beagle/Brittany mix back in the 80's would scarf her lunch if she left it on the kitchen table when she came home at lunchtime. The persistence of memory is real.

You will always have Maggie with you and my theory is that all of our dogs will be waiting for us, wagging their tails, in the hereafter. Cats, meh.

And Marlene, you are allowed to pass schoolhouses on the Interstate!

BTW, there is a difference of opinion on when, if ever, to get a new dog.

I had a dog guy, Vet, trainer, breeder, tell me to not wait. He said Dogs need you more than you them. I think that is right and Maggie would be the first to agree. Go down to the local kennel or PetCo and pick one up who makes you smile.

I absolutely believe that’s what they think.

They think we will reject Trump, suck up four years of Biden (well, six months of Biden and 3.5 years of Mooch/Abrams/whoever) and then, come spring of 2024, open our wallets to the establishment GOP when they reign to lie to us for a few months before running out their latest Washington Generals-esque campaign that generates an electoral loss but fattened bank accounts for the GOPe.

Corey Johnson’s deranged slam of Samaritan’s Purse — which only helped NYC

No good deed goes unpunished. A group of evangelical Christians discovered the truth of that cruel adage firsthand, after some of our local politicos repaid their charity with savage scorn, with City Council Speaker Corey Johnson calling for their expulsion in a spittle-flecked Twitter rant.

“It is time for Samaritan’s Purse to leave NYC,” he tweeted Friday. “This group, led by the notoriously bigoted, hate-spewing Franklin Graham, came at a time when our city couldn’t in good conscience turn away any offer of help. That time has passed. Their continued presence here is an affront to our values of inclusion, and is painful for all New Yorkers who care deeply about the LGBTQ community.”

There is something really "off" about the whole HCQ-as-a-religious-test thing. Hydroxychloriquine is one of a whole list of drugs that the worldwide medical community have been looking at since SARS-1, and that research has been led by the Chinese. And it sure looks to me that the Chinese have been playing it pretty straight all along at least in this narrow area. SARS-1 was vicious in the places that it hit in China, and they have been talking-the-talk and walking-the-walk ever since trying to figure out ways to effectively treat the next SARS-like thing that they have been afraid of all along. Since they immediately saw this new coronavirus through the lens of their experience with SARS-1, they have been looking at all of the research that they've been kicking around since SARS-1 for answers.

(I'm really wondering if what the Chinese missed was the 3-drug-cocktail? Maybe that's why they weren't able to figure out a way to use the HCQ that they had identified as working in a test tube but it didn't seem to be working in actual patients?)

So why the attacks on people looking at HCQ as a possible treatment? This is a brand-new disease and there are no treatments, and you expect people to be looking for something, anything, that makes things better. Blind alleys come with the territory -- why the hysterical attacks on people who are basically just asking questions? Or is it that comparing HCQ-Z-Z to placebo and seeing that it really doesn't work any better than a placebo makes obvious that in fact the disease itself is almost always no big deal because it resolves itself without any treatment 90+% of the time?

But, anyway, that isn't the only hysteria around the edges of this thing that I just don't get. China had SARS-1 that originated in a wet market. They had an outbreak of swine flu that they traced back to a lab tech selling infected animals rather than autoclaving them. Infectious diseases getting out of labs has happened everywhere -- accidents happen, people are imperfect. (Back in the 70s a CDC researcher stuck herself with a needle while working on Ebola. Fortunately she didn't get infected.) Viruses are invisible, pandemics are confusing, the first couple of cases that the Wuhan doctors saw were elderly people who worked at the wet market. So the doctors thinking that this came from the market is completely understandable. And it's totally plausible that if a young healthy worker from the lab got infected then the young healthy person wouldn't have gotten sick, and the disease could have been transmitted several times between young healthy people and none of them got sick. If one then went to the wet market (because it's in the neighborhood) then the Wuhan doctors' original guess that their patients got this new mysterious disease from "an animal at the wet market" would have in fact been true, just with the wrinkle that the animal in question was 2-legged and had caught it from another 2-legged animal and it came from the lab.

There was a story in the WSJ in early March from the POV of a radiologist in the Wuhan hospital. Because the Chinese tests were unreliable, they were dealing with deathly ill patients who had all of the symptoms, but they would test over and over and get negative test after negative test, and then finally a positive test, but then going back and forth between positive and negative tests. This radiologist was the one who convinced her colleagues that when they were dealing with people whose x-rays showed massive lung damage and the people had all of the other symptoms, then the positive x-ray meant positive no matter what the blood test said. According to this article, the first couple of patients where they realized that they were dealing with a new SARS-like disease were connected to the wet market and SARS-1 came from a wet market, so it was a no-brainer to think that this was a wet-market species jump, too. That's what they reported to their colleagues and their superiors. It's a totalitarian state, so people get punished for sticking their necks out and contradicting whatever the official story is, and nobody could really be sure one way or another. The tests were only partly accurate so they weren't totally sure who was and was not actually infected. Before the authorities could get to the wet market and search for the animal, somebody tipped off people at the market and they destroyed all of the animals and cleaned everything up -- there's that totalitarian state making people afraid of getting caught doing something that they might get punished for. And the docs were all focused on treating the desperately ill people overflowing their hospital and for their purposes it didn't matter where it came from.

So why all of the hysteria about "conspiracy theories" if you wonder whether it came from the lab? After I read the WSJ story, I think that on the Chinese side the people who are sure that it came from the wet market got that info second hand, and the people who got it first hand aren't sure.

Captain Hate,

Truly delusional. The snobbery of NeverTrump pisses me off. My father was a 1936 high school graduate, had a partial semester at IU because his belongings were stolen from his rooming house, and then enlisted in the Army, where he was just about to be discharged when Pearl Harbor struck and he was in for an additional 4 years. When he got out, he started a furnace repair and sheet metal shop and married my mother, who had just started teaching and was NOT too snooty to marry him.

My brother was not too wild about Purdue, and wound up leaving school and becoming an electrician. He was happy to marry my SIL, who was a teacher, and he was also happy to put her through law school.

My son has worked most of his adult life in the landscape industry, and can tell you everything you might want to know about trees, shrubs, lawns, various vegetative diseases, plus is self-taught in Spanish, NONE of which I would wager Bill Kristol could hold his own in.

None of those NeverTrumpers ever try to convince me on ideas, but simply stick their noses up at the guy from Queens who talks with an accent and knows people like Mike Tyson and asks embarrassing questions about government regulations. To heck with those guys! They thought they were entitled to run the country from a back seat drivers' position.

Jack Lillywhite

Got a Jack Reacher book I haven’t read on my Kindle, so I bid farewell and gentle seas to all sailing through this night.

Slaap lekker, tot morgen.

Is it true that Holder is a partner at Covington & Burling?

Captain Hate

Yes, Rocco; I was shocked that he was at the firm representing Flynn. It made me think maybe Flynn was setting them up.

Okay, I’m still laughing at the video that joan linked about the cockatoos. Highly recommended.

Instructive comparison between coverage for Florida and California.

I didn't know that but now that I do, it reminds me that Holder is tight with Rosenstein also going back at least as far as U1. Rosenstein slow walked the Mikerin case covering up Holder's involvement in the CFIUS decision to sell our uranium to Russia.

And Holder appointed Rosenstein to investigate General Cartwright for leaking classified infovabout Stuxnet when in reality it was the White House leaking that stuff to make them look tough. Rosenstein seems to me to be Holder' fix it man.

As I've thought for a long time, IMO, Sally Yates had that DOJ deck stacked from the beginning, for the coup.

Ignatz Ratzkiwatzki

That's a very hard thing to do, MM. I remember every time I had to have one put down.
Eleven great years before that though; as much as it hurts it's always worth it.

Instructive comparison between coverage for Florida and California.

Other comparisons: OR vs ID. GA vs CO. Oh, wait that one was where two governors did THE EXACT SAME THING but the R was slammed by the MFM and the D (gay) was left alone. It’s a mystery!

If the nevertrumpers ever see the base running at them they better hightail it ASAP and the devil take the hindmost, cuz the Deplorables will be taking the rest.

Our condolences to the family of Don Shula, who died today at the age of 90. He was the winningest coach in the @NFL, leading the @MiamiDolphins in 1972 to the only perfect season in NFL history. https://t.co/nGqlhmgnmr

Ignatz, lyie,

Thanks! I am comforted by the fact that the people were kind and they made sure she wasn't scared.

Yep, Bottom of the toolbox:

Now it gets interesting.

I always get a lump in my throat thinking of saying goodbye to a beloved dog, MM. It’s happening right now. But then, I’m on my second glass of wine.

Another Bob

So COVID numbers are garbage. What are we going to do about that.l

Virginia will pile more garbage on.

“Pressed to clarify the policy, Macenka said that repeat positive cases "are counted as separate cases only if the tests occur on different days. If [a Virginia resident] tested Monday and Tuesday and both are positive, that's two positives."

MM, you were good to Maggie all through to the last--God bless you both. Such a stab still to remember the loss of all the dogs through the years--the one thing that can reliably make me cry (am crying now)--and what fool thing did we do after losing our collie and corgi in September? Got two new dogs just two weeks ago, the brother-sister beagle-pointer mixes. Well, they need us and we need them. You can never have too much love.

Jane, so glad about your eye. Is Dan Crenshaw in fact taken? He's very cute, and men with courage are always the best.

That IMHE knucklehead virtually doubled total deaths overnight.

Seems more like a random number generator than anything.
