Here's an article from two years ago about the Minneapolis police reducing their psych evals for new recruits: Starting in 2012, the city eliminated four of the five psychological tests used to screen applicants for its police academy. Those tests — at least one of which the department had used since at least the mid-1990s — were dropped even though a federally funded study conducted in the Minneapolis Police Department showed some were effective at identifying problem officers.

He said that 6 minutes before he died. Why didn't the cop take his knee off his neck? He was already in handcuffs?--
According to the Andrew McCarthy article RSE linked [which I urge everyone to read];
at one point, while Floyd was still moving but apparently not talking, Lane said he was “worried about excited delirium [hyped on drugs] or whatever” and suggested that the police should “roll him on his side.” Chauvin rejected this suggestion, opining that the excited delirium Lane feared was “why we have him on his stomach.”
Perhaps that would have saved him. Perhaps not. We don't know. But it seems there was something other than killing the guy on Chauvin's mind. Big guys in handcuffs on drugs can still do a lot of damage.
"Officer who knelt on victim had 17 prior complaints against him"
It's been made very easy to make a complaint about a policeman. And the threshold of behavior that that some think justifies a complaint us much lower than it used to be.
I'm sure each complaint was scrutinized and found to be lacking in whatever it takes to take punitive action. Domestic disturbances surely are rife with complaints.
Are we past saying that Mr. Floyd was murdered yet?
I'm sure the cop didn't think, "I'll just go ahead an kill this guy, with lots of folks watching. No one will notice."
Even if it's proven that he died from something other than asphyxiation, I still think he has a problem explaining why he still kept his knee on Floyd's neck after Lane felt for a pulse and found none. Don't you think that's troubling? I don't think it was premeditated however.

Possibly, but so what?
The only two questions that matter are;
1. Did the cops' actions contribute to his death? We don't have a definitive answer to that yet and we might never have one. We don't even know definitively whether it was a homicide.
2. If it is determined they did, did they amount to a crime?
This case is not vastly different than the Eric Garner one. A big black guy ended up face down complaining he couldn't breathe, except in that case one of the cops did have him in a choke hold. While he was still alive they turned him onto his side so he could breathe easier and he still ended up dying.

My partners and I are in lockstep with Attorney General Barr. It is time to stop watching the violence and to confront and stop it
We heard from Attorney General William Barr, David, and, specifically, I'm glad you're with me because he used the phrase "law and order." It was a very specific choice of words there. And that, of course, harkens back to Richard Nixon himself whom you worked for, although I think the use of that phrase predates your time there. But why do you think Barr is using that? Why do you think that is something the administration is leaning so heavily into?
Picking up on the trope promoted by liberals that speaking in favor of "law and order" is tantamount to expressing a racist sentiment against African Americans, Gergen responded:
It's a code phrase - it's more than a dog whistle, you know, it's a very definite message to the base that "I'm going to be tough on this," and that's the position he's taking. It's -- he's nuts, and what we need and what the best Presidents have done is to heel and to calm things down, not to sir things up.
Gergen is coward at heart. There are many like him. These are people who would never think to retaliate against violent aggression.

Did he intend to kill him if he kept his knee on him after he passed out?
He intended to kill him if and only if his goal was to kill him.
I not sure if you're asking whether one could infer that his goal was to kill him because he kept his knee on Floyd's neck after Floyd passed out, or whether you're asking whether such reckless indifference constitutes intent. If the first, then I would say it could certainly be evidence of intent, that would need to be factored into the other evidence. If the second, no, reckless indifference is not intent.
do those ersatz Republicans really expect us to say "ya know, after hectoring us for four years you've finally broken us and we now see the errors of our ways"?
Yes. Yes, they absolutely do. And if we did, they would gleefully spend the next four years publicly debating over whether they ought to deign to take us back - provisionally, of course - or if we’re irreversibly contaminated.

Let me amend that. I should say "if his goal was to possibly kill him. If I played Russian roulette with someone else's head, and killed him, I think that would be first-degree murder, even though there was a five-in-six chance of survival.
Supremely disappointed to see my University president, a guy I like quite a bit, make this video decrying the "police killing" of George Floyd and violence directed against African Americans.
It struck me as odd and inappropriate, not to mention conclusive on a matter that is very much inconclusive right now.

How does a guy saying "you're killing me" in the middle of an arrest indicate Chauvin preplanned something"
Must be from someone who never watched the old Fox reality series "Cops." If the police believed every perp (cop talk!) who claimed to be in life-threatening distress while being forcibly arrested, few would go to jail.
Though I don't think the cop behaved properly by keeping his knee on the already-handcuffed Floyd, the idea that he intended to kill him, while people recorded the whole thing, seems highly unlikely.

Those comments were hilarious.
A bunch of Marxists squealing that the state is confiscating private property.
Prog logic. The state can't confiscate rioter's stockpiles of water but they can shut down the entire economy and confine us to our homes over the CCP headcold.

The state can't confiscate rioter's property but rioters can steal or destroy anyone else's property they choose.

do those ersatz Republicans really expect us to say "ya know, after hectoring us for four years you've finally broken us and we now see the errors of our ways"?
Yes. Yes, they absolutely do. And if we did, they would gleefully spend the next four years publicly debating over whether they ought to deign to take us back - provisionally, of course - or if we’re irreversibly contaminated.

He intended to kill him if and only if his goal was to kill him.
Let me amend that. I should say "if his goal was to possibly kill him. If I played Russian roulette with someone else's head, and killed him, I think that would be first-degree murder, even though there was a five-in-six chance of survival.
Posted by: MJW | May 31, 2020 at 05:25 PM

What a crazy weekend.
Supremely disappointed to see my University president, a guy I like quite a bit, make this video decrying the "police killing" of George Floyd and violence directed against African Americans.
It struck me as odd and inappropriate, not to mention conclusive on a matter that is very much inconclusive right now.
