Another $298M heading to @MTA, adding up to over $2B in federal funding from @USDOT so far, part of the $3.9B total from the CARES Act. This is critical to keeping essential personnel moving and aiding metro NYC in recovery. We are here for the people of New York!

Captain Hate

If we're choosing sides put me with Tonto, KK and henry..

GUS

Lyle, ironically and truthfully, I first picked Klobachar, but was locked out of JOM at the time.
By the time I got "released", someone else had taken her. hAHAHAHAHAHA.

Why do people keep calling her D or d? Don't we all know it's maryrose, who has the D because she wasn't able to edit the name in her Typepad profile? If not, we do now.

But are the people of New York here for you? 50/50 at best, less more realistic. Its basically a brain dead city. And not talking about jimmyk and his brethren biut then he knows what I mean.

Tonto

IG -- I think you are missing my point. Yes, not minding your manners, or being uncivil, coarsens society. But that's not what I'm talking about. I'm objecting to the disparate reaction to female vs male "insults."

Tonto

Jane -- and I'm curious: Why is "cunt" worse than "prick", "dick" et alia?

GUS

Tonto, please read my 6:37

DrJ

What I don't understand is the need to insult people here or get terribly offended if "bad" language is used.

This is a public and very open blog. Read the postings you want, and ignore the others. There are people here whose contributions I value, and others that are relegated to the killfile.

Why is this so serious?

Jane

Tonto,IVE SURVIVED MY SHARE OFINSULTS, AND HAVE NEVER THOUGHT my gender should save me, but there is something about the “c” word that I think is not a standard insult. Same with the “n” word - which my neighbor who I love uses all the time and always makes me cringe. I guess. I can assume that is typical TK speech, and it will bother me less.

GUS

Victimhood equals power.

Captain Hate

Ah dear sweet maryrose, who told KK he took a slot from a more deserving applicant at Notre Dame because...well, what Clarence Thomas had to endure. And didn't back down when I called her out on it.

Poor dear sweet maryrose...

Extraneus

I'm with Tonto also, but I think it was meant to be more biting than calling a guy a dick, so maybe not a fair comparison. About the word itself, I agree there's no reason it should have any greater insult value than prick, etc.

OT: Believe it or not, I'm in the exact chapter of an anatomy textbook where these matters are being examined, albeit in more latin-like language. After seeing all the similarities, there's really much less difference between the sexes than I ever thought. All the arteries, veins, nerves and lymph systems are almost identical. Only the family jewels are different. They must be the last things to differentiate in utero. (I haven't cheated by looking that up yet.)

Jack is Back!

Ah, tonto, women are the protected species, except when men want to rape them, or assault them or harass them because they think they can.

And don't forget which really upsets the "cunt" user is when you write stuff thlikat makes them look like "dicks" or "assholes" or "fuck ups".

But "cunt" reveals their intentions, don't you know.

GUS

Anybody know how many years the person who RAPED Gretchen Whitmer got for a prison sentence.

bubarooni

I went over the top here once with someone because that person was attacking MM.

During the unpleasantness I recall saying something along the lines of:

'if you constantly snipe at someone from the flanks you shouldn't be surprised if your adversary prefers an all out frontal assualt.'

Now, I've regretted that exchange ever since but, there are no Marquess of Queensbury rules on the interwibbles.

In my younger years, I was at a bar in Bloomington one evening chatting up a girl. A guy come up and we exchanged some unpleasant remarks. He then shoved me. I didn't shove him back. I kicked him in the balls and when he bent over in pain, put my knee in his nose.

Same principle.

I've regretted that too. Not just because he wound up with the girl either.

It's not wise to think that people you engage with will engage back in the manner that you engage. You will eventually run into that person who doesn't.

Things can escalate quickly in the virtual world just like it can in the real world so it's always wise to think about your own actions and not worry so much other peoples reactions except as a learning opportunity.

Captain Hate

Ext,

When you talked about the hole in the fetal heart between chambers that closes before birth, when babies are born with a hole in the heart is it because the closing didn't happen? Because the first time I heard the term an image of blood being pumped into the body cavity happened and I thought that can't be right.

Tonto

Well, my husband just said, "I can't believe this is the issue on which you choose to engage!" Because I am considered a real blue stocking, and never curse. I hate the vulgarity of Jezebel-ish feminists, and don't want to be seen as endorsing it. However, I just hate the double standard. We're not that fragile.

Can anyone explain to me how a major corp's customer service page can be closed down for 24 hrs? Tried to do some business with ATT and all I get is they are having tech difficulties.

As to the insult thing, I always felt that it belittles the person using the insulting word much more than the person to which it was directed. Just my 2 cents.

I get that, tonto, but IMO part of the coarsening of society is treating men and women the same.
Call me old school but if I'm with a male friend and he gets in a physical scrape with another guy,* I'm not going to humiliate the friend by intervening unless it's to keep him out of the hospital.
If I'm with a female friend and she gets in a physical scrape with a guy then I will intervene to put him into the hospital.**

*If the male friend I'm with gets in a physical scrape with a gal then he's definitely on his own.
If the male I'm with who gets in a physical scrape is my brother then I will hold the other guy's beer.

**At 61 I haven't yet started to feel the physical insecurity of age but I can feel it lurking.

I never use the M-WORD or R-WORD.

Why do we persist in saying a word by assigning it's first letter????? Are we talking about a word that we pretend does not exist, or is it just virtue signaling.

I would never say the N-WORD. Or, I'm not going to call you a CUNT, so I'll say you are a C-WORD instead.

Very nice guy otherwise. After he had been showing us around the various ᵖʳᶦᶜᵏ chairs for a while, a lady came over and patted him on the back and asked if he was doing OK. The next time we wanted any furniture we stopped back there and asked for him, but they said he retired. So now whenever we look at furniture we keep saying ᵖʳᶦᶜᵏ to each other as we walk around.

Another bob, Sorry, I guess the link timed out. Itwas just a short orfer from the Ct of Appeals giving judge Sullivan 10 days to reply to the petition for a writ of mandamus and offering dOJ an opportunity ti appear in the same time frame.

Extraneus

When you talked about the hole in the fetal heart between chambers that closes before birth, when babies are born with a hole in the heart is it because the closing didn't happen?

Could be, but I don't know.

Anyone not interested in freshman anatomy, please scroll on.

During incubation, there's no breathing and therefore no action in the pulmonary circulatory system. After birth, that changes immediately and one side of the heart becomes strictly dedicated to taking deoxygenated blood from the veins into the right atrium, moving that into the right ventricle, and pumping it into the lungs from there. It then comes back from the lungs into the left atrium as oxygenated blood and gets sent out to the rest of the body from the left ventricle, which is a big muscle in your heart, much bigger than that of the right ventricle. (My current thinking is that the difference in pressure between the ventricles, due to the difference in the muscle thicknesses, is related to how the whole thing can work after birth, but I don't know if that's true.)

The point I was amazed at is that in utero, when the pulmonary system isn't working yet, there's an opening between the right and left atria (atriums?), which allows venous blood to move over to where oxygenated blood goes after birth. (This is due to the umbilical artery and vein, which exchange mom's oxygenated blood and substitute for the lungs.) Immediately upon a person's first breath, this opening begins to close, and does so within hours. It's possible that this might not always happen, but I don't know about that. I'm just guessing that the closure of this opening over the next hours and days has something to do with a pressure difference between the pulmonary and systemic systems.

Another Bob

Nothing to apologize for Clarice, was just wondering why Sullivan got ten days to make more trouble, rather than the response being due, say, tomorrow.

boris

"It's possible that this might not always happen, but I don't know about that"

In about 1/4 of the population it doesn't completely close. I think it usually is not a problem but is something they check out for stroke ... maybe if there is no other obvious reason for one.

The lungs will usually filter out small clots in the blood from the veins so they won't wind up in the brain. The hole can allow a small clot to get from the vein system, through the hole, and cause a stroke in the brain.

Ext, you'd mentioned that in one of four cases the hole doesn't close. Is that the condition that results in heart murmur, which is relatively common? My niece had a hole of some sort, but she required surgery when she was one to fix it. That can't be a one-in-four condition.

MJW

Will Chamberlain has an interesting video on the DC appellate court's order to Sullivan to respond to the mandamus petition.

The video answers the first question I had: Is the order routine? Chamberlain says it's decidedly not routine. He says that the appellate court could have simply dismissed the petition; and, in fact, that's what would commonly occur.

One thing he didn't specifically mention, that I find interesting, is a differnce between this case and Fokker. Sullivan is instructed to respond personally. Obviously neither the DoJ or the defense could respond to support Sullivan's position, but in Fokker the appellate court appointed an amicus curie to argue for the district court, rather than having the judge do it.

What a fortunate draw Powell got: two Republican appointees to one Obama appointee.

But it's good to have some standards of decorum, even if we don't have to faint when they're violated. And what's the point of standards if we can't also have double standards? :) Seriously, like Iggy, I think the world was a better place when there were double standards for men vs women.

It [The Atlantic] used to be good and then it wasn't.

What's really weird is that these closures and layoffs seem to have no effect on the few left standing. It's sort of like a herd of zebras where the lion takes the hindmost, and then the next one and then the next one until he finally gets to the head of the herd, who never looked back to see if the others were there.

Maybe Durham will use this strategy to pull them down one by one until Obama is running along and finally realizes there is no one left to blame.

Don't know much about DC Fed courts but in CA civil ones typically you're given 30 days for something major like responding to a suit or filing a notice of appeal. And extensions are often granted.
But for other less complex motions, especially where one party has induced the motion through their own action a lot of times 10 or 15 days is more typical.
