More cases, fewer deaths is a GOOD thing, TM. We have to get to herd immunity and we can't get there without exposure.

One hope/theory is that the young and restless are getting out, getting infected, getting tested, and not dying.

Here in TX which is mostly open, that is quite obviously the case.

Much of the testing is being driven by: 1) people needing a test to go to work, and 2) people needing a test to have an unrelated medical procedure. Therefore it is not as much a case of people feeling sick and needing a test, as people NOT feeling sick and needing a test. Therefore a significant number of the new cases are asymptomatic.

Also, some context. TX has 29 million people. FL has 21 million people. Your graphs look scary until you look at the actual numbers on the Y axis.

Also, the rona has been overreported as cause of death due to $$$.

As I've commented before, I am in the heart of Texas in one of its largest cities, we have been opened up for a month, and I STILL have yet to learn of a SINGLE person I know who has tested positive for this thing. Literally not one. And not only do I not know a single person, no one I know seems to know anyone who's tested positive either.

Don't let the Trump haters get you down. The freakout is for one reason only: to continue lockdowns until such time as Dems can secure a mail-in election that they can steal.

Porchlight

Oh, and California population 39 million. So a 70 percent "surge" from a small number - likely due to a lag in reporting - come on.

If reopening was really a problem the numbers (both new cases and new deaths) would be much larger. And there would be staggering data from the states which never shut down. But somehow we haven't seen that.

This is so obviously political but I guess it's harder to see if you're locked down in Karenland. Come to TX and enjoy some normality. :)

The Infamous Ignatz

--I STILL have yet to learn of a SINGLE person I know who has tested positive for this thing.--

That because at the most only one person in 133 has even tested positive for the bug, let alone gotten sick, let alone died.

Captain Hate

Where are the millions of deaths Fauci predicted?

The Infamous Ignatz

And of course that 1 out of 133 is heavily skewed toward not just NY, NJ, CA etc. It is skewed toward a handful of counties within those states.

I'm nervous that:
a) any time there's a new flu bug, we'll be instructed by authorities to mask up and stay indoors.
b) that when a) happens we'll listen to authorities instead of laughing at them.

Narciso

Didnt he die at the cyberdyne headquarters.

Porchlight

That because at the most only one person in 133 has even tested positive for the bug, let alone gotten sick, let alone died.

Exactly. At most.

So (as I've asked all along) why the freakout?

Remember muh overwhelming of the health care system, bodies stacked up like cordwood in ERs, etc.? It's not even being talked about anymore. That is because it is not a threat. Again, that suggests that new cases are largely asymptomatic.

In Europe they're having trouble finding enough virus to analyze. Its virulence has faded away. If we'd treated it like what it is, a seasonal virus, we'd be past it by now.

But it was an election year, so no. We had to lock everyone down, kill the economy, and "flatten the curve" which really means EXTEND the curve - to weaponize it politically for as long and as destructively as possible.

This overreaction is the stupidest, most venal mistake (if you can call it a mistake) in history and it was obviously so from the beginning.

From someone in Arizona (I have confirmed his identity). Obviously, cases are really rising, but there seems to be at least some double-counting going on.

Narciso

Lets see what is the variable that would explain a high case growth rate predominantly among younger people

The Infamous Ignatz

If America is really a racist country then shouldn't we be in a spot where Marxists, lunatics and morons no longer have to manufacture "hate" crimes?
Where they no longer have to canonize thugs resisting arrest or attacking someone because they have example after example of innocent black people walking down the street being intentionally murdered by cops.
And since, in a racist country surely not every racist is a cop, shouldn't there be a wide disparity in blacks being oveerrepresented in the makeup of crime victims but not perpetrators? In fact the disparity is severely in the opposite direction.

America is now, to a degree it hasn't been for 50 or more years, a racist country. Blacks [and other "protected" classes] have been the "beneficiaries" of quotas, set-asides, carve-outs and reverse discrimination. They have been infantilized with low expectations and handouts and excuses for social pathologies no other group would tolerate.
For blacks fortunate enough to have made it out of the ghetto before the Dem progs turned their attentions from suppressing them to "helping" them, life is pretty good. For those who didn't, their family structure, their schools, their odds of escaping the ghetto and the very lives they lead [or are snuffed out even before they're born] have been turned into a nightmare.
The destructive leftist program that has been forced into all of America has been, as it always is, especially pernicious for the poor, among whom blacks already made up an inordinate share. Whether anyone thinks they were there because of pre-existing social pathologies or former racism, it is undeniable by any sane rational human that progs have destroyed millions more black lives than they have helped, because black lives don't really matter to progs of any color. Only political power does.

Extraneus

--This overreaction is the stupidest, most venal mistake (if you can call it a mistake) in history and it was obviously so from the beginning.---

It is, along with the BLM riots, part of the ongoing coup. It is the only brilliant part of it in that it has a veneer of science and public health behind it, but that veneer is just another Guy Fawkes mask.
Two things have really scared progs in the past 15 or 20 years.
First was the Tea Party and second was Trump. They can handle the Bushes and the Paul Ryans being in power because they're not a threat, but at best beautiful losers. They were and are no threat to the prog project of replacing America.
If they can humiliate them and run them out of office fine, but the mere threat of it is enough to usually tame their better natures. What more can you say about a party or its principles if they join with their Dem enemies to try and import as many aliens, legal and otherwise, who almost guarantee America being replaced by a one party Dem state?

I have been working with the public in my very busy store since this all started. There are five of us who worked full time, ten hours a day. We did not wear masks until Baker required it. They are still required. We paid our two old timers to stay home. The one who has COPD started working three short shifts last week. The other, who is very healthy in his eighties, does screen repair from home for us instead of working here in the store. I know personally four people who are friends with my sister in law who had it. One was hospitalized. I know of an overweight woman in her 50’s who died. I know for sure three of my regular customers had it, and they were all in quite often before they knew about it.

We are all fine. None of us have missed work. Is that any indication of what is going on here? Maybe we all caught it at some point, but it was mild enough to ignore. Being self employed, and having a spouse who was not working (the case for three of us) means you keep quiet and keep working. The economics of this for the self employed and lower income people requires one to just push on through. People say that you don’t hear about the super market employees getting it. Ha, they just kept their mouths shut if they felt anything like a cold in my opinion.

Anyway that’s my two cents. Off to work.

I will match you Holcomb of Indiana, who is currently lecturing everyone about "social distancing" (boy do I hate that phrase) and wearing masks (which I estimate about 30% of people are doing in public.

He has had to apologize for being photographed WITHOUT a mask and hugging two kids, meanwhile. AND he has done zip about cleaning off the bases of a couple of statues which had BLM and obscene insults to police spray-painted on them.

The only benefit I got was at the height of the scare I got my BP med prescriptions renewed simply by talking to my doctor over the phone. Since my yearly appointment is in rainy, cold March weather, I was glad I didn't have to go out.

PS. Why id Fauci still working and not retired? He's 79.

“Political correctness is communist propaganda writ small. In my study of communist societies, I came to the conclusion that the purpose of communist propaganda was not to persuade or convince, not to inform, but to humiliate; and therefore, the less it corresponded to reality the better. When people are forced to remain silent when they are being told the most obvious lies, or even worse when they are forced to repeat the lies themselves, they lose once and for all their sense of probity. To assent to obvious lies is in some small way to become evil oneself. One's standing to resist anything is thus eroded, and even destroyed. A society of emasculated liars is easy to control. I think if you examine political correctness, it has the same effect and is intended to.”

LOTS of great cognitive dissonance stories popping up LOL. Insty has one, look for "IT WOULD TAKE A HEART OF STONE NOT TO LAUGH" about the homeless encampment muscling in to a white neighborhood's local park.

Also, this one. Perhaps we are on the cusp of a Darwinian extinction event? I should feel sorrow but ...

Mitchell Erickson’s fingers began dialing 911 last week before he had a chance to even consider alternatives, when two black teenagers who looked to be 15, at most, cornered him outside his home a block away from the park.

One of the boys pointed a gun at Mr. Erickson’s chest, demanding his car keys.

Flustered, Mr. Erickson handed over a set, but it turned out to be house keys. The teenagers got frustrated and ran off, then stole a different car down the street.

Mr. Erickson said later that he would not cooperate with prosecutors in a case against the boys. After the altercation, he realized that if there was anything he wanted, it was to offer them help. But he still felt it had been right to call the authorities because there was a gun involved.

Two days after an initial conversation, his position had evolved. “Been thinking more about it,” he wrote in a text message. “I regret calling the police. It was my instinct but I wish it hadn’t been. I put those boys in danger of death by calling the cops.”

What about the fact that the boys had put his life in danger?

“Yeah I know and yeah it was scary but the cops didn’t really have much to add after I called them,” he replied. “I haven’t been forced to think like this before. So I would have lost my car. So what? At least no one would have been killed.

My youngest had an interesting incident the other day when he stopped at a gas station to buy something inside, I can't remember what it was he bought but the incident has a bit of racism as well as mask shaming.

Ross told me he held the door open for a black brother and sister to enter before him, not a word of thanks or acknowledgement so my son approached the cashier and heard the sister ask her brother what it was that mom wanted. The brother said very loudly, I can't remember cause this white man isn't wearing a mask. Now my son's no slouch, matter of fact, he's pretty damn tough and loves to fight. He's been in trouble for fighting in the past and had to face charges in Maine for an assault, a head butt that cut the dude pretty good. He was also 5th in New England his senior year in HS as a heavyweight wrestler. In any event, the cashier now states, my boss told me I don't have to serve anyone that makes me feel uncomfortable and you're making me feel uncomfortable. The sister hears that they're being refused service and flips out. I was pleased to hear my son tell me that's when he screwed. The next day Ross is telling Jesse (the cop) about it and he says, "that was you? We got a call on that."

At first, I thought I had simply forgotten how many crazy drivers there are, since the roads were sparsely populated from mid-March through April (at least where I was driving). I'm thinking that there's an analogy to vaccines.
You can go anti-vax and get away with it if most all of your neighbors continue to vaccinate. But once a critical mass of non-vaxers occurs ... your community is vulnerable to a devastating epidemic.

Similarly, these prog political sensibilities are fine at low-ish levels. But once the police stand down and the reservoir of bourgeois behavior has drained away ... suddenly a light dawns.

Black Lives Matter leader states, “If U.S. doesn’t give us what we want, then we will burn down this system and replace it”. This is Treason, Sedition, Insurrection!

Viruses going to virus folks.

You flattened the curve--thank you for that.
Now, get those young people out (not the obese ones though) and let them form a wall of immunity.

Deaths are a lagging indicator---but ICU beds and ventilators lag less, and we are NOT seeing an increase in our patients on vents here, despite a rise that caused my governor to extend the Phase Two lockdown.

Told that @NYCMayor Bill de Blasio wants to paint the fabled & beautiful Fifth Avenue, right in front of Trump Tower/Tiffany, with a big yellow Black Lives Matter sign. “Pigs in a Blanket, Fry ‘Em Like Bacon”, referring to killing Police, is their chant. NYC Police are furious!

I'm sure I'm late with this, but just in case it hasn't been posted, our medical "experts" are now conflating virus testing and antibody testing. That is, if you had the virus and beat it months ago, the antibody test will come back positive. It will be counted as a "new" case. I have no idea what percentage of the tests being given now are antibody tests, but that they are being counted at all means we are being intentionally lied to.
Also, I'm pretty sure I remember it being discussed on a previous thread here, but I'll add anyway, every single person diagnosed with SARS CoV 2 who died, no matter what the actual cause of death, is being counted as a covid 19 death. In the state of Washington, 5 people who were shot to death, but tested positive, were counted as covid 19 deaths. Remove these deaths from the count and we have a bad flu sized fatality count.

My good friend @BuzzPatterson
is currently locked out of his Twitter account and they aren't in any hurry to let him back in.

Surely, this isn't election tampering...
