Raccoons are so frickin smart.
I have Chester's food, in a big plastic bin, with lid, inside one of those plastic sheds made to house portable generators.
It has a small tab which fits through the lid to put a lock on. I slid a bolt through that tab so they couldn't lift the lid.
Got up this morning, bolt gone, nowhere to be seen, lid on bin inside shed pushed down into the food where a raccoon had obviously eaten some.
So I got a new bolt and put a nut on it. Twice that little punk has been trying to get in there tonight.
If I put a combination lock on there, I figure I'd find the little jerk sittin there with some sandpaper for his fingertips and a stethoscope to listen to the tumblers.

Heh, Iggy.

An interesting argument on the floyd case:https://medium.com/@gavrilodavid/why-derek-chauvin-may-get-off-his-murder-charge-2e2ad8d0911

Any predictions on the Flynn Mandamus? I've been thinking--at least 2 of the 3 judges think Sullivan went overboard; all three want to preserve collegiality and not embarrass Sullivan even though he's whacked(else why the unique order that he defend himself). I think they will suggest they know he'll do the right thing and act on the dismissal on July 15 without any intervention or further investigation, but if he doesn't they will reconsider the mandamus. They will also say the evidence of misconduct by the govt which brought the case seems clearly established and they think it is beyond doubt that the DOJ has the right and obligation to correct such errors on the govt's part.In other words they'll give him the opportunity to get back in line on his own and save face.

Another Bob

And while they let Sullivan save face and judicial collegiality and not make arguments in their private club, Flynn still sits there on the hook. It’s not right.

So Sullivan issues the order dismissing this case, then with his personal prosecutor initiates some new investigation. Lather rinse repeat.

Another Bob

Sullivan should no longer be able to officiate disputes between competing kids’ lemonade stands.

DrJ

One thing I will mention about raccoons: they are absolutely freak out by fire extinguishers.

How can Sullivan possibly claim to be an impartial judge at this point, and how can the CoA believe he is?

Yahoo intones:
Stocks around the world sold off on Monday, as fears about a resurgence in COVID-19 infections around the world dampened risk appetite.

Sounds pretty bad, but I'm not believing it. First, the story goes on to identify the "resurgence" as two events, a) 57 new cases in an a small area near Beijing, and b)new cases discovered mostly in the western US. Well, we all know how reliable information is coming out of China (but 57 cases, so what?), and I know I heard some doctor of something or other on Fox saying that these new American cases are largely asymptomatic people discovered through wide testing. Not sick people.

So the Dow was down 1000, but has cut that in half. We've seen how crazy people are, though, and it's up to Trump to make sure that saner heads prevail. Forgive me for thinking that the left, and the hysterics, interpret higher cases as meaning more deaths instead of meaning a lower death rate, and that the left does it to try to hamper the recovery and, therefore, Trump.

hrtshpdbox

And you know that from now on, every flu season, the nuts are going to demand that we walk around looking like bandits. If we don't, we'll be subjected to news stories about some 80-year-old who might have been with us until 90 if we weren't heartless killers. They'll probably televise the poor codger's awful discomfort (when people are dying they're not having a good time, surprise surprise), just so we can feel properly guilty. Every year the flu kills tens of thousand of Americans, but going forward it's our fault because we didn't jump through their Crazy Hoops soon enough.

Amen.

As a society we should have treated and talked about Covid like an extremely bad flu season and responded accordingly.

We'd have the same number of dead, but we wouldn't also have a crippled economy and 30 million people unemployed and all the rest of the madness we're dealing with now.

hrtshpdbox

James D., imagine if divinity intervened and offered us a whack at a do-over. We'd hope that the government would announce a new virus with unknown parameters, that if we're not feeling well we should stay home from work and away from others, that older folks should particularly try to avoid everyone for awhile, that hospitals should prepare for a possible influx of cases. But what a disappointment that would be for the left, who would insist that many thousands will die if we don't shut down society. That myopia, the inability to see that the new problems caused by their zeal is worse than their solution, seems to be a constant among academics, the "experts" we listen to by default.

King Crimson. Back around 71, my lead tech who was about as hippie as a techie could be, got a gig as a DJ at the new album rock station in Phoenix KDKB. He pulled the midnight to 6 slot Saturday night/Sunday morning. He picked In the Court of the Crimson King as his theme song. Of course KDKB played in our instrumentation trailer all day. Got to go to a party at the owner’s digs up on Camelback Mountain one night. Dwight Karma was what he called himself. I think his daddy owned KDKA in Pittsburgh, so his nic was created out of the station name: Dwight Karma Broadcasting. Their lead DJs were quite excellent. Probably got more exposure to the ‘good stuff’ than I ever would have listening to the usual top 40 schlock.

hrtshpdbox

Oh my goodness, CH, thanks for putting that up, that's one of the strongest things I've heard in a long while. A very stately head-clearer, wow.

Manuel Transmission

Oh, when DK came to town, he bought a high end, high powered FM station that did that elevator music on tape that was popular back in the day. All that smarmy orchestra stuff probably churned out by Hollywood soundtrack operations. So to cleanse the system of all that schlock they played surf sounds on a loop for many days without any other announcement.

"Watching people lose their businesses, bury family members who died alone without funerals, seeing special needs kids suffering without therapy ... while watching the same politicians cheering massive protests through the streets. The anger I feel will never, ever go away."

It continues with quite a few angry people. I think that the Democrats have made a huge mistake. On top of that, a few people (mostly men)try to shame them intoconsidering attending Trump's rally, which only infuriates them more.

If Democrats are not authoritarians how come they're always crowing about how America is about to become a majority minority country and how that demographic trend spells the death of the GOP as a national party?
Doesn't that kind of mean they're hoping and working for a one party state, which is pretty much the definition of an authoritarian government?
Or perhaps their definition of pluralism is the choice between communists on the one hand and anarcho-syndicalists on the other.

Glad you liked it, box. That's from a release that combined a bunch of South African exiles, the only one still alive is drummer Louis Moholo-Moholo, with Brit free jazzers like Tippett. I have a boot of a subsequent live performance which is excellent.

I never got a chance to see Tippett play. I don't think he toured the US that much and the one group that did, Mujician, was mostly confined to the east coast. He did some nice duets with Howard Riley, another excellent pianist with a fantastic book of work (for whatever reason Spotify lost the rights to a lot of his early work which I was fortunate enough to have listened to) who won't be around forever.

CH, I was looking at the line-up for the Octet at Discogs (needless to say, it's a pricey LP), and then read a bit more about the participants. I love how that track, and I guess it's true of free-form jazz in general, has subtle shades competing with the broad strokes.

On another note, I saw Fripp & his crew (Band of Gentlemen at the time, I think) at Asbury Park's Stone Pony, around '79 or '80. He did an exquisite set of thinking man's music which failed to impress the crowd gathered in Springsteen's home base watering hole.

Part of a longer comment at Amom's 5:36 NewNeo link.
Basically disagreeing with me and CH in our criticism of our spineless RINOs.

For a long time I’ve felt, and even expressed here in Neo’s fine comments, that US Democrats are acting against conservatives like the Nazis acted against the Jews.
More and more people will see it. And undecided folk will see it more clearly if it is honestly expressed:
Democrats are using their political influence to take away human rights of those who disagree with their policies.
Democrats. Not “the left”, because there is no “L-Left” on any ballot. The L-Libertarians are mostly ignored, despite having the best philosophy for a Free and Responsible People. A majority of people would rather be More Comfortable, and especially Not Be Responsible, even it means being less Free. (Short form of DNW – too many Americans are spoiled rotten)
Addiction to materialist consumption makes folk fearful of losing their jobs, their income — and especially their status.
It is the US Democratic Party which is mostly to blame; Reps have long been against most of the changes, altho many elected Republicans have been so lightly against most changes as to have given silent consent.
So I disagree, strongly, with this from Paolo (whose comments are great, even this one which I disagree with):
Republicans are now as guilty as Democrats for letting “systemic racism” becoming an idol,

The Supreme Court ruled Monday that a landmark civil rights law protects gay and lesbian people from discrimination in employment, a resounding victory for LGBT rights from a conservative court. The court decided by a 6-3 vote that a key provision of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 known as Title VII that bars job discrimination because of sex, among other reasons, encompasses bias against gay and lesbian workers. A ruling on similar protections for transgender people is expected soon.

Until recently those in the "Farms" subdivisions have been protesting that name as it implies redneck, uneducated hicks. I live in a "Farms" subdivision and they tried to change our name on the monuments out front, and the county informed them it can't be done due to the platt filings when the subdivision was built. They wanted to change ours to "Plantation." I bet they would be cringing now if they had pulled it off.

This morning, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled against ADF client Harris Funeral Homes and redefined 'sex' in federal law.

Here is what ADF Vice President of Appellate Advocacy John Bursch had to say about the decision:

"Americans must be able to rely on what the law says, and it is disappointing that a majority of the justices were unwilling to affirm that commonsense principle. Redefining 'sex' to mean 'gender identity' will create chaos and enormous unfairness for women and girls in athletics, women's shelters, and many other contexts. Civil rights laws that use the word 'sex' were put in place to protect equal opportunities for women. Allowing a court or government bureaucrats to redefine a term with such a clear and important meaning undermines those very opportunities --- the ones the law was designed to protect."

Good Morning! There are actual plantations in Maine. About 30 plantations still exist from 200 years ago when Maine was part of Massachusetts. The land would be surveyed and then "planted" with settlers. The settlements or plantations would usually grow into towns, but a few remain, usually in the northern part of the state. Probably the most well known plantation is Monhegan Island.
All the 200th birthday festivities planned for the summer have been postponed because of Covid.

The Food and Drug Administration on Monday withdrew controversial emergency use authorizations for two controversial coronavirus treatments promoted by President Donald Trump despite concerns about their safety and effectiveness.

The agency revoked the authorizations for hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine after a request from Gary Disbrow, acting director of the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority.

After reviewing new information from large clinical trials the agency now believes that the suggested dosing regimens "are unlikely to produce an antiviral effect," FDA chief scientist Denise Hinton said in a letter announcing the decision.

Critics have accused the agency of caving to political pressure when it authorized use of hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine in hospitalized Covid-19 patients in late March despite thin evidence. More recent randomized controlled trials have found the drugs do not benefit coronavirus patients, and doctors have reported that hydroxychloroquine can cause heart problems.

Because hydroxychloroquine is approved for other uses — treating lupus and arthritis — doctors could still use it "off label" to treat coronavirus patients, and clinical trials examining their use against Covid-19 can continue. The FDA noted that the version of chloroquine that had been authorized for emergency use is not approved in the U.S. so all use of that drug, donated by Bayer, will now end.
