One reason Hillary Clinton lost in 2016, beyond her own shortcomings both personal and political, was that “Obamanomics” had so self-evidently failed. What can explain this? Cognitive dissonance is a psychological term describing the mental stress we experience when confronted by situations that expose conflicts between our beliefs or when we receive information that contradicts what we believe. Liberals believed in Obama, despite all evidence that suggested his policies weren’t working, until finally confronted with unmistakable proof in the form of Donald Trump’s election. No Republican presidential candidate had won Pennsylvania and Michigan since 1988, but Trump did it, and his victory was a source of cognitive dissonance that liberals were desperate to resolve. So they blamed Russia, and sexism, and most of all, they blamed racism.

The more I observe the more I think leftism and all ideologies are a form of mental illness.
One of the hallmarks of a personality disorder is that the disorder is the person's identity. That's what a personality is. It's not only who we are but it's the mask we wear for the world, literally.
Personality from persona - Latin, meaning "mask".
For a "neurotypical" as the normal are sometimes called, the mask is relatively transparent and there mainly to maintain social norms and for the benefit of others.
But for the disordered it is as opaque as they can make it and it is there to protect what they perceive as their fatally flawed interior, usually at any and all costs.
That is why those with PDs are noted for habitual, pathological and sometimes quite bizarre lying. And as anyone who has dealt with a political ideologue knows, lying is one of their main political tools.
Similarly anyone outside the disorder are viewed as enemies who might expose the fatally flawed interior and so elaborate and unhealthy defense mechanisms are developed to protect and preserve the flawed center. And along with the shame of this perceived flaw and the harmful defenses usually runs a pretty intense anger and animosity over the unfairness of it all. The individual often directs that anger inwardly but the ideologue seldom does. For the ideologue anger is reserved for those who threaten the collective ideology, either from without or within.

As I've said before I consider the political spectrum to not consist of equally authoritarian extremes of right and left but of a continuum that spreads from totalitarians, traditionally what are called the far left and right, on one side to total libertarian on the other. Libertarians themselves tend toward a pretty mild ideology, but a rigid, rote and ultimately unsuccessful one. But it is utterly benign compared to the other side of the spectrum.

Those people have embraced their politics in the same way the disordered embrace what they believe is their fatally flawed interior. In fact I would say there is a good deal of overlap or comorbidity as the head shrinkers say between apolitical mental disorders and political ideologies. They both attempt to live in a false world and dream incessantly of a utopia that will exist someday if they can arrange things just so. In that false world any contraindicating facts, figures or data from the real world are assiduously rejected as lies or evil intent by their enemies or those who would hurt them, which they usually perceive as anyone outside the realm of the little world they create. And since the main method by which a false world is maintained is by lying to oneself and because the person's defenses and identity itself are wrapped up in this false reality anything goes as far as protecting that world, including the most outrageous and irrational lies and perceptions imaginable. Oftentimes the lies become an actual believed reality rather than intentional.
As Hoffer noted the mental illness of an ideology usually takes place in a mass movement. It's in effect a form of collective personality disorder.
The primary difference is, for the average, garden variety PD afflicted individual it is individual; they live in a false world they have created and it is usually a very lonely, painful existence.
One other difference is that an ideologue who begins to feel safe in the collective, especially as it gains power, is often more willing to drop the mask in public as the social cost of doing so declines.
A cult I suppose would be a state of existence somewhere in between.

But from our perspective they all share a common thread; they're irrational and not subject to reason. For the truly committed the only recourse is to shun them and have no contact with them because they can't be reasoned with. Nor can we change or fix them. Like a fish up a rectum, apparently it is a lot easier going in than coming out.
It's no longer a matter of persuasion once a person subsumes reality and their perception of it to their inner mind and makes their peace of mind, to the extent they have any, contingent on maintaining those misperceptions and deceits. Some, a relatively small number, will awaken at some point and either change or try to change, though they often just substitute another pathology for the one they abandoned. If it occurs it is an interior process, though external stimuli or crises may precipitate it.

If an ideology remains small enough to not hold power, all's well.
But once it gains power, the normals have three choices; defeat it politically, which is difficult because of their fanatical zeal and win-at-all-costs mentality, revolt and dislodge them from power or resign oneself to living as best one can in the dystopia of their fantasy realm where might makes right, up is down and life is a lie.

Confusingly, like the mentally ill, an ideologue will often have segments of their life that are not disordered or at least not that can be seen from outside. They may love their kids or their spouse or their dog. They may be conscientious employees or bosses. And they usually perceive the rotten things they do as necessary defenses to a difficult world they wish would disappear.
But in the end, for those who have made the personal the political and whose root identity is their ideology, if push comes to shove your freedoms and liberties which exist in the real world are subservient to the false one they exist in and hope to make universal because they find the real world unbearable.
And because they find the real world unbearable and hopelessly imperfect compared to the utopia they're creating, there are no limits to what they'll do to create it. Especially since that utopia always and necessarily remains out of reach.

There's a dishonest Fox headline that homicides in LA are up 250% in a week. From the Fox reporting, this percentage increase seems to have translated into one homicide during the period. But everyone knows "media is idiots." But the story has interesting facts on who got shot:

The homicide victim, Fox said, was "a man in his 40s, died at the scene. No information was available on the man's identity, or on a suspect.
The other three shootings:
— At about 2:10 p.m. Monday, a person was wounded near Daley Street and Manitou Avenue in the LAPD's Hollenbeck Division by a man who fled in a vehicle. The victim was hospitalized in stable condition.
— At about 3:45 p.m. Monday, a person was wounded in a gang-related shooting near Spaulding Avenue and Cologne Street in the LAPD's Wilshire Division by shots fired from a vehicle. The wounded person was hospitalized in stable condition.
— At about 9:20 p.m. Monday, "multiple" victims were wounded in a gang-related shooting near Telfair Avenue and Sheldon Street in the LAPD's Foothill Division by someone in a truck that sped off. All were hospitalized in stable condition."

If those victims are representative of the people in LA, I'm wondering if everyone in LA is in a gang ... Looks like the police have been only moderately effective against gangland, both before and now …

There is no way that one murder can be a 250% increase. If there were even one murder the first week, to get get a 250% increase, you would need 3.5? murders the second week. In fact, to even be able to make that claim credibly, you would have to have a minimum of 2 murders the first week and 7 murders the increased week. Since I live in LA County, I have been trying to pull apart the statistics that the LAPD is using, but all I see is a report of the tweet, not the numbers behind it.

Also, I think the one murder refers simply to the number of crimes reported in the previous 24 hour period (Monday, June 8, 2020).

Several years ago I read an article that documented how the Communists in the late 1940s when the Cold War flared up started referring to themselves as Progressives so Americans wouldn't know their true colors. Someone mentioned The Cowsills and sappy songs. They were the real life inspiration for The Partridge Family,but their story was the opposite of what was portrayed in the show. They were from Newport,RI (their father was retired Navy). He was abusive and the kids were living a lie behind the facade of a big,happy family who happened to become popular in the 1960s. Several years ago at hubby's college reunion,I talked with wife of one of his college friends. She had also grown up in Newport,RI and knew all the Cowsill kids. She and her friends all went to the gigs when the Cowsills played locally,before they became a big deal. She told me that when the documentary came out,nobody had a clue what was going in the family. She was shocked because she thought she knew them so well. The kids were living in a nightmare. It is a very sad story.
