Wait, what?!? The big NY Times scoop about Russian bounties to the Taliban for killing Americans was raw intel the credibility of which was still being assessed? Whoa, Fake News Watch!
Although, don't rule out this scenario - Faction A is convinced the intl is legitimate. Faction B is convinced that the US/Russian relationship is complicated, we have no good responses, we don't need this aggravation right now,and anyway like most intel, this report has holes.
The upshot: Faction B is slow-walking, foot-dragging, and basically hoping to bury this under unanswerable follow-up questions. A frustrated Faction A leaks the mess to the press. And here we are, lost in the fog.
Unrelated - defund the police in NYC! Why not, its not as if they are keeping crime down.
Here is a factoid meriting a bit of homework:
Commissioner Dermot Shea says the city’s homicide rate has hit a five-year high and the amount of people shot so far this year has jumped 42% compared to the same period last year.
He said there were 100 shootings in the city in the month of May.
Not having looked, I'd have guessed homicides were below average during the March/April lockdowns. Which suggests May/June must have been nuts.
I haven't found what I want but here are the monthly NYC crime summaries for:
January Shooting incidents: 2019: 52; 2020 67 +15
February 2019: 42; 2020: 45 -3
March 2019: 56; 2020: 56 0
April 2019: 62; 2020: 56 -6
May 2019: 61; 2020: 100 +39
28 Day is most of June 2019: 80; 2020: 149 +69
Clearly unrelated to protests, reopenings or really, anything at all.
TM:
Plus 69 is unrelated?
It is ok that you don’t want another 4 years of President Trump.
A President with dementia will lead to further decay of the Republic.
It is all about choices in life and living with the consequences.

Last post because three in a row is my limit.
We have a long 4 months ahead of us.
We can’t go ballistic over every comment or hesitation on the part of the Republicans.
Some like McConnell have an election to win so it doesn’t matter if he encourages the wearing of masks.
Let us not get caught up in the minutiae of the silly season in politics.
I take the long view.
Once the crap hits the fan from Durham, all hell is going to break loose.
Biden will be lucky to equal Mondale’s performance.
Ok, maybe he will get California, Washington, Oregon and New York and Illinois.

Not having looked, I'd have guessed homicides were below average during the March/April lockdowns. Which suggests May/June must have been nuts.
Here you go, TM:
Through 6/21 there were 166 murders, vs 134 in 2019 over the same time period. 34 were in the most recent 28 day period. So through 5/24 there were 132. Do the same for 2019, through 5/24 there were 111. So nearly 20% higher through 5/24.
Now through the miracle of the wayback machine:
Through 5/31, 139 vs 117 in 2019. Over the 28-day period 5/4-5/31, 33 vs 17. Meaning that through 5/3 there had been 106 in 2020 vs 100 in 2019.
So yes, May/June were nuts, but Jan-April were evidently no picnic in the park either. A 6% increase 2020 vs 2019.

That's a 2017 article. So everything that happened to Flynn is because Woolsey lied about him? Weren't Mueller's team of genius superstars supposed to be able to figure this out? And fuck Pence for being so dumb as to have Flynn fired for believing that horseshit. Trump/Grenell 2020!
Posted by: Captain Hate | June 29, 2020 at 03:10 PM
In fact, I can go further: In the 28-day period from 4/6-5/3 there were 30 homicides in 2020 vs 22 in 2019. So shockingly, April was pretty nuts too. So much for the lockdown reducing crime.
Robberies, burglaries, and auto theft show a similar pattern, whereas rape is down.

I hate masks. They hide our human expressions and connections. Inhibit human contact. They make me angry as we all become like sheep. Our county has just made them mandatory in public. I may not go out.
We flew to Chicago on Friday for ENR's daughter's wedding. Since few guests would commit to coming to a regular wedding and party in September they moved it to last weekend in the backyard in Three Oaks Michigan with only family and two best friends. It was lovely and everyone took the masks off. Thank goodness. Pretty sure we were the only non crazy libs there but there was a wonderful barn down the road with huge Trump 2020 flags and another that said "Team Deplorable."
Masks also mandatory during the flights. No food or drink served but I sipped on a Diet Coke the whole way to allow for the mask (a bandana) to be removed.

--Iggy, the other piece of the puzzle--while woolsey was working for the Turks to grab Gullen, he claimed Flynn was doing it:--
OK clarice, but what's the Joint Task Force MAGA and who is Robert Caron?
That may all be perfectly legitimate and I hope it is and its provenance is known and corroborated.
But it reads kinda like a Hardy Boy mystery written by Alex Jones.
Moreover the claim that Flynn knew of or advocated for the kidnapping of Gullen was never a legal issue; just a rumor. IIRC, he was accused of filing a false FARA document that contained inaccuracies about his dealings and payment by a Turkish outfit. He acknowledged he signed an inaccurate document but has always maintained he didn't know it was inaccurate because he just signed what was prepared for him.
I'm not sure how the Woolsey story effects that end of things.

We have next to no Chinese virus here in Rocky River.
It is no skin off my nose to wear a mask.

The science on masks is, like so much science these days, and nearly all science that intersects with politics, largely a joke, but not a very funny one.
Here is the WHO metastudy which has been so influential in the mask debate.
The first thing you'll notice is almost all of the studies analyzed regard SARS and MERS* and very few about Covid; 36 for the first two and 4 for Covid respectively. That's understandable since Covid is new, but MERS and SARS have very different transmission methods and rates so it's unclear if their data is of any value at all.
Of the Covid studies only 1 studied any type of community transmission and even that one included health care workers and residents of the same household. All the others were health care settings or close family contacts as was virtually every single SARS and MERS study with only seven of the 36 being non health care workers and almost all of those people in close sustained contact.
So only one out of forty studies was of Covid in a community setting at all and it is impossible to tease out the health care/non health care and community/hospital/family exposure aspects of it.
The other big whoop is some study of the German city of Jena where they noted a drop in cases after a mask order was implemented. Was that because everybody started wearing masks or because people got scared and quit going out because a mask order was put in place or any number of other causes that had nothing to do with the order.
Junk "science" and yeah, the scare quotes belong around "science" not junk.
*How come nobody has a fit about Middle Eastern Respiratory Syndrome being a racist name?

D-
Don't know if you personally had any responsibility in getting Heinen's profitability up enough to make it happen, but thanks for supporting them well enough to come here in my little haven of 5700. They're a special family.

“I am a grouchy old Hoosier grandma and I am not changing my ways.”
LOL, I totally get it...
When I exert myself while wearing one I notice I get winded much faster. Have to get it off my nose.
And there are western-style restaurants of all styles there. My favorite breakfast place in Yokohama is called Royal Host. Pretty close to a Denny’s (which you can also find there).

I was part of a small BI firm that did some work for them. They run a nice operation. I felt sick when I heard their downtown store was broken into during the "mostly peaceful" demonstrations.

Mel:
Heinen’s huge here in Northeast Ohio.
I have been supporting them for the 40 years I have lived on the West Side.
A close friend from Cleveland Hts. goes to the one by Captain Hate and the store in University Hts. There is one in Chagrin Falls on the Far East side and Bay Village on the west side where my sister in law lives.
Excellent food and all workers wear masks or face shields and let older workers work 3 days on and then get 3 days off.

CH:
I was outraged over that destruction at the downtown store which is in the heart of the area where people work.
My nephew works at the Columbus Hilton and my sister was worried about him during the riots down there.
