In a break from my normal routine I turned on the television to get an update on whether America burned down last night.
On CNN, a panel was asked how hard we could blame Trump for last night's outrages.
On Fox, panelists wondered how hard we could blame various governors.
On CNBC, the anchors wondered whether we'd see another COVID spike (the demonstrations are outdoors w/ youngsters, so MAYBE not. Beside, who has time for testing right now?)
I wondered what happened last night and why stocks were up in the US and all over the world despite the best week for US anarchists in decades. I'm still wondering, although four cops shot/wounded in St Louis looks like the lede. And yes, its the Honey Badger Dow. Pandemics, riots, trade wars? Honey Badger Dow don't care.
FWIW, Fox News chatted with Byron Donalds, a Republican in the Florida House competing for a US seat (FL19) left open by the impending retirement of Republican Rooney. Impressive - here's your chance to give him $5.
Now returning to my quiet contemplation with the TV off until its time for Jeopardy.
Repeating from the end of the last thread, because I think it's an important point:
One of the comments about his walk to St. John's Church pointed something out I hadn't seen last night:
"He walked ahead of the rest, making himself a clear shot so that no one else would get hurt."

In 2020, planners and urbanists focused on equity are broadcasting a clear message to the wider profession right now that goes a step beyond connecting the racist present to its roots in the past. The message: Many of the planning innovations claimed by progressives as victories of social and environmental justice in recent years are perpetuating institutional racism.
Planning and urbanism have not achieved some apolitical or post-racial transcendence, despite good intentions. Overcoming institutional racism will require a thorough commitment to centering issues of equity in every planning discussion—from the public realm of streets and parks to the private realm of mixed-use development and housing. The slow streets and al fresco streets popping up all over the country, are subject to this critique, as explained in detail by the advocates featured in a bombshell feature by Alissa Walker, published by Curbed in May. For more sources on this subject, follow and boost the voices recommended by former Streetsblog USA editor Angie Schmitt.
Ensuring a new normal of social and racial equity will require a deep reckoning with the ways that planning innovations perpetuate systematic inequality, even among the most innovative and ostensibly progressive planning practices. It might be hard to hear, but advocates are underlining and insisting on this point, and no matter how difficult it is to confront, the field of planning is faced with an opportunity to enter a new era: one that centers racial, social, and environmental justice in every act.

Good Morning! Governor Mills really, really doesn't want President Trump to come to Maine. She talked to the media in Augusta yesterday with a message to the President.
"I ask that you check your rhetoric at the door and abandon the divisive language that sows the seeds of distrust among our people."
During the video conference yesterday, she asked to see the proof of "professional" agitators. There were protests in Portland and Bangor yesterday.

Fentanyl is very powerful and is dosed in micrograms. If memory serves it is roughly 100 times more potent than morphine. Carfentayl was developed as and is used as elephant tranquilizer and much more powerful than fentanyl. Again, relying on a questionable memory, l believe a grain or two can be fatal. Scary, scary stuff. It was and probably still is being used as a cutting agent in heroin.

My paranoia has made me develop a conspiracy theory, so lets try this out.
Unbeknownst to me, my county has gone to "voting centers." That means instead of 250 polling places there are only 25. And they have allowed anyone who wants to to vote by absentee/mail because of the WuFlu.
Normally, Indiana wouldn't do that, but I guess Marion County did the voting centers right after the mid-term elections.
Then the paper put out a bunch of fluff stories which I found while searching, all with quotes from women my age about how RELIEVED they were not to have to get to a polling place.
(Even my daughter says they don't really want us to vote.)
SO: First fake polls, then WuFlu, then tell people they can vote absentee by mail.
THEN, "disappear" a bunch of GOP votes in the primaries so when the totals come in in November is won't look suspicious.
Posted by: MissMarple2 | June 02, 2020 at 08:36 AM
Don't forget the "extra vote counting time will be required"!

Melinda,
The absentee/mail votes have to be in by noon today, although the polls close at 6PM.
So, if the mail for you "voting center" comes in the afternoon and you didn't mail early enough, your vote won't count.
UNLESS you are a Democrat.

You know I like Trump and all MM, but that commenter is silly. Of course he was going for the symbolism, probably to specifically attack the “holed up in the bunker” nonsense. But Secret Service had that locked down adequately. Risk to the group that made the walk was well-managed.

Add a code to a "Vote by Mail" envelope, and each election "judge" knows precisely which ones to throw out. Just like any mailed survey, it's coded to precisely to whom it was sent. Very common practice by PR firms.

...why stocks were up in the US
Going into Friday's close it was known and factored in that there would be unrest over the weekend; what wasn't known was how SpaceX would go. Not only was Tesla up more than 7% yesterday, but space launches always seem to spur enthusiasm from buyers, going way back. The market enthusiasts look at the world reopening and feel that, no matter how long it takes, a boon lies ahead without much likely to stop it.

Although it's difficult to imagine that intelligent people (well, not AOC) can get it so wrong, I think of my local paper, which panned the Gettysburg address as "silly remarks", or the Chicago Times, which said of the address, "The cheek of every American must tingle with shame as he reads the silly flat dishwatery utterances of a man who has to be pointed out to intelligent foreigners as the President of the United States.”

I think it can be seen also as a Martin Luther moment.
"Here I stand. I can do no other. God help me."

The group then smashed in the back door, police said. When they made it upstairs the owner started shooting and shot one man in the head.
That man died in the store, police said. The other men ran off. Police found a gun that the owner said does not belong to his shop at the scene, so they think someone brought that with them.

Rev. Jesse Jackson visited with Mayor Frey on Riot Day Deux in MNPLS.
Conveyed to Mayor Frey, and i quote, "Dr. King would have been proud of your response to the violence."
At which point Mayor Frey burst into tears and sobbed unabashedly in front of the delegation, the Hennepin county attorney, and AG Ellison.
Also on that day Rev. Jackson and his delegation declined an invitation to meet with
Senator Globuchar after considering her track record on issues related and her current positioning for the VP slot.
It was a 12 hour junket which included touring the part of the city where Mr. Floyd died in police custody.
My source is as impeccable as it is private.
More to come.
