Former Secretary of Defense Gates comes out in favor of re-naming the Army bases currently named for a bunch of Confederate losers and traitors who, BTW and thank Heaven, lost.
His PR people probably could have coached him up a bit:
“The events since the killing of George Floyd present us with an opportunity where we can move forward to change those bases,” Mr. Gates said in an interview. “It’s always puzzled me that we don’t have a Fort George Washington or a Fort Ulysses S. Grant or a Fort Patton or a facility named for an African-American Medal of Honor recipient.
Jiminy, don't offer three white guys and a player to be named later! Do the homework and pick a name or two. Black Medal of Honor winners are here. Don't spend too much time looking for a general - the highest ranking officers are Lt. Col. Rogers and Capt. Pitt of Vietnam. The Civil War provides many candidates and a number of Master Sergeants - Fort Fleetwood has a nice ring to it.
And Lt. Baker of WWII sounds like Audie Murphy on steroids:
For extraordinary heroism in action on 5 and 6 April 1945, near Viareggio, Italy. Then Second Lieutenant Baker demonstrated outstanding courage and leadership in destroying enemy installations, personnel and equipment during his company's attack against a strongly entrenched enemy in mountainous terrain. When his company was stopped by the concentration of fire from several machine gun emplacements, he crawled to one position and destroyed it, killing three Germans. Continuing forward, he attacked an enemy observation post and killed two occupants. With the aid of one of his men, Lieutenant Baker attacked two more machine gun nests, killing or wounding the four enemy soldiers occupying these positions. He then covered the evacuation of the wounded personnel of his company by occupying an exposed position and drawing the enemy's fire. On the following night Lieutenant Baker voluntarily led a battalion advance through enemy mine fields and heavy fire toward the division objective. Second Lieutenant Baker's fighting spirit and daring leadership were an inspiration to his men and exemplify the highest traditions of the Armed Forces.
Gates did wonder why there is no Fort Patton. Fort Hood is up for grabs and was home to the 20th Armored after WWII; the 20th was also in Patton's 3rd Army that swept across France. Fort Patton or Fort Hood? Come on, ask me a hard one!
As to what or whether this will happen, who knows? There is an opportunity here for a national feel-good moment while we argue about the many black heroes on offer and debate who is most exemplary. Fort Tubman, for her work on the Underground Railroad? Tell me more!
The re-naming idea found bipartisan support on the Senate Armed Services Committee and Gates (as well as Gen. Petraeus (ret.) ought to have some sway here. But Trump does not gravitate towards "feel-good" when there is a chance for a shouting, divisive brawl. I suspect this will be an opportunity lost.
Sorry, folks - no Fort Patton. President Biden will assuredly not be naming any bases after white guys (General George Washington, slave-owner? Har de 'effin har.) When Fort Hood is finally renamed, well, we'll see.
But speaking of Biden (you remember him? The guy who used to be Obama's Vice-President?) let's remind ourselves of Gates great quote:
Having served eight presidents, including as C.I.A. director under President George Bush, Mr. Gates has been called one of the most admired public servants in modern times by Democrats and Republicans.
...
As for the fall election, Mr. Gates would not say whom he supported. In a previous book, he wrote that while he respected former Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. as “a man of integrity,” he was “wrong on nearly every major foreign policy and national security issue over the past four decades.”
Gates is not doubling down on that but he is not backing down either:
On Sunday, Mr. Gates stood by that assessment. “The one place I would take it back — during the Obama administration, we agreed more than we disagreed,” he said, citing their mutual opposition to intervening in Libya or pushing for the resignation of Egypt’s Hosni Mubarak.
In a separate interview Sunday on “Meet the Press” on NBC, he went a bit further. He noted his policy disagreements with Mr. Biden, then added, “But I think one of the things that people will be weighing this fall is probably the character of the two contestants.”
Probably.
4 years ago, noticing Rodham's unresponsive carcass being hefted into her hearse by her hired muscle was a "conspiracy". This year, Trump trying not to slip going down a slick ramp raises health concerns.

Once I sat down, Biden got up and started to yell at me. He bellowed “you are going to lose this issue. You are going to lose this issue because the Balanced Budget Constitutional Amendment sounds good and the American people are stupid and will support anything that sounds good.”
Given what we’ve seen the past three months, and what between 40 and 50% of the electorate apparently is OK with, it’s hard to see where that statement is wrong.

Is it really beyond the grasp of someone as intelligent as TM to understand that these monuments and place names were placed there and maintained primarily to avoid humiliating and crushing a defeated South and to healing and reconciling the country after so great a rupture?
Is it also not apparent that those tributes to reunification and forgiveness are being targeted by people preaching divisiveness, unforgiveness and hate?
The Big Lie is never about duping anyone. It's about social pressure to cause conformity and compliance rather than independent thought by people who know in their heart the Big Lie is just that.

You know, there’s a reason why America stole all those Confederate heroes after the war. The Civil War had two sides: the side that lost fought for the idea that their 11 states made up a separate country, while the side that won fought for the idea that the people they were fighting were their own fellow countrymen. The flag that led Union troops into battle had 33, 34 & 35 stars. (34 was Kansas, 35 was West Virginia).
After the war, the people on the ground who put the country back together were the American veterans who erected monuments to their American heroes. They were opposed by Democrats, who all along agreed that the Confederacy was a different country.
150 years later, when all of those 150-year anniversaries flowed by over that 5-year span, it was very quiet and those anniversaries went uncelebrated and unremembered. Because there was a Democrat in the White House, and Democrats have never believed that the Union cause was right.
Now, 155 years after we all thought that the Democrats had finally lost the argument about whether the southern states were “us” or “them”, the Democrats have sent rioters into the streets to repudiate our victory at Appomattox.

Most AF Bases are named after Air Force Officers who demonstrated heroism or first of a kind air service. Some are named after their location like Plattsburgh AFB. But thank God we didn't have a Confederate air force in the Civil War except for the occassoinal hot air balloon.

The beginning tone of this thread hit me the wrong way.
My husband is a Civil War buff and we have seen many of the battlefields in the South.
Renaming these forts to me insults our history.
The same with the statues.
If you want to rename or take down statues there needs to be a vote by the people of that particular state and then they should be placed in a museum if the people of the state vote that way.
This is vandalism tearing them down like the Taliban did.
Disgraceful and lawless.
Again the inmates have taken over the asylum.
President Trump is blunt and pulls no punches.
I happen to like blunt people because you know where you stand with them.
Also I no longer want to see any relatives of these criminals whining on tv after these hoods resisted arrest.
Go after police you take your chances.
You just might end up in a bad situation that had you complied you wouldn’t find yourself in.

MissM posted a good (brief: 18 min) interview with VDH by Sebastian Gorka. VDH mentioned a couple of things:
1) Petraeus (for example) could have pushed for base renaming any time during his tenure but waited till now.
2) These sequential statements by military and ex-mil leaders are clearly meant to undermine Trump. They are not thoughtful suggestions.

Do you really think that naming all of these bases after black medal of honor winners will solve anything? How naive.
Let's just strip away the heroes who founded our nation and preserved it over and over again. There are plenty of them. Let's forget the trauma of Reconstruction and the purpose of the names of military installations and ships, and shred the land again. Bases are named for historical purposes. Ripping up old territory never advanced a cause, but I can tell you losing a place and a name that was dear to you can tear out your heart.
We are dealing with ONE murder that hasn't even gone to a preliminary hearing AFAIK, and woke people want to rip up the country yet again. Unfucking believable.

Just like 4D, SCOTUS version.

Boiled down to it's lowest common denominator, hate for western man and western gov't (predominantly white/Christian historically) is a war against God. God's word stands in stark opposition to everything the left champions. The left is a human manifestation of the fallen angel.

Democrats are pushing defunding the police, lawlessness, while not letting law-abiding citizens open their businesses or work.
The backlash in the November election is going to be historic.
Mark my words. Everyone I know is pissed.
It’s going to be a Republican wipeout.

Officials say Pres Trump will meet tomorrow with police representatives and with families who have lost a loved one to police action. An official says the president's objective is to turn the anger in the country into action and bring some unification and healing.

MM "How many of those were from New York and New Jersey?"
"were" implies facts already on the books. This is simply another projection designed, again, to change the behaviors of a targeted group.
Quoting IMHE (they, half of the 2,000,000!!!!) proves James' (???) observation that not only are "experts" not punished for being wrong in the past, the Left goes back to them again and again.
And of course, why not? From the Left's POV, it worked the last time. (Sort of an updated Harry Reid: "he didn't get elected, did he?)

“It’s going to be a Republican wipeout.”
If it’s that cut-and-dried, why do you suppose the dems are doing it?
I don’t believe they’re that stupid, do you?

I don’t believe they’re that stupid, do you?
Well, yes, but I think they’ve set up—intentionality or not—the famous Hobson’s Choice: take Biden or nothing.

So now that Karl Rove is working for Trump what does he announce first:
a war with Syria or amnesty for 40 million illegals?

No, Lyle, you forgot what's behind curtain #2.

take Biden or nothing.
Joe isn't going to make it. He'll have to be replaced, and Cuomo may not want to take it, figuring he'll be more viable in 2024. I'm thinking the Hillary idea might not be as far fetched as it sounded when it was first mentioned.
If it was going to be Biden, and he still had a functioning survival instinct, he'd have already picked the VP, which would have made him much more difficult to Arkancide. (Would his replacement get to fire his VP choice and make a new choice? What if his replacement isn't higher on the social justice hierarchy than his choice? What if his choice is a "black" half-Jamaican, half-Indian woman?)
