A Federal judge denies an injunction that would have modified Federal policing in Portland:
Oregon Loses Request for Injunction Against Federal Agents in Portland
Judge says state’s attorney general presented no evidence that allegedly illegal seizures by federal agents have happened frequently during protests
A federal judge Friday denied a temporary injunction sought by Oregon’s top law-enforcement officer, handing the Trump administration a victory in a legal battle over its deployment of federal agents to Portland.
Oregon Attorney General Ellen Rosenblum filed the lawsuit last week, asking the court to require agents to identify themselves, their agency and reasons for a stop before taking anyone from the streets without probable cause.
In a 14-page order, U.S. District Judge Michael W. Mosman ruled that the state lacked legal standing to bring the suit and had “presented no evidence that these allegedly illegal seizures are a widespread practice.”
“Despite the broad language in the complaint, Oregon has shown—at most—that this type of seizure has happened twice,” Judge Mosman wrote.
Earlier Friday, the Justice Department announced charges against 18 people in Portland for federal crimes allegedly committed during protests that have grown in size and drawn national attention during the past week.
The charges, all of which involve alleged crimes that took place at a federal courthouse, include assaulting federal officers, trespassing on and damaging federal property and arson, Billy J. Williams, U.S. attorney for the District of Oregon, said in a statement Friday.
Protesters have been out on the streets of Portland every day since shortly after the death of George Floyd, who was killed on Memorial Day while he was in the custody of Minneapolis police. Largely peaceful demonstrations sometimes ended in violence and property damage at night, prompting the White House to send federal agents to Portland on July 1 with a mission to protect federal property.
“Protests in downtown Portland have been followed by nightly criminal activity,” Mr. Williams said, adding that the Mark O. Hatfield U.S. Courthouse had been a “target of vandalism during evening protests and riots, sustaining extensive damage.”
Well. Nice to see a judge take Trump's side.

It was a win for Trump either way. If the ruling had gone the other way, normals would have been livid, and Trump could have shoved the riot video down the judge's throat, like he did to Roberts this morning with the church ruling.

Yes, Jane, it's a hundred and thirty piano players playing different parts. The conductor, Hugh Sung, sent us software with the sheet music for each part, and he conducted it. I listened to his directions on my phone with headphones while he conducted. My son, on a different phone, videotaped my part. Everyone sent in their videos over a one month period. Then Hugh mixed all of them using some kind of zoom software. Took Hugh over a month to do that, and I can't imagine how long it took him to write the parts.

cathyf (back thread): "somebody posted the UCSF Grand Rounds video about a week ago, which had a discussion of reopening schools. One of the anecdotes that they threw out was that after the schools reopened in France, there was a high school student who got regular flu and the CCPv at the same time. They found that she HAD infected several at the high school with the regular flu, but did not Infect anyone with the CCPv.
I’ve searched but can’t find any other reference to this— has anyone found a proper reference?"
I think that's one I posted.
But, no. Not aware of a secondary reference to that story.

"Children may even act as a brake on infection," Berner told a news conference, saying infections in schools had not led to an outbreak, while the spread of the virus within households was also less dynamic than previously thought.

On the topic of WuFlu, I got this link in email.
https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/fullarticle/2768926
It talks about 4 young men in Europe (2 pairs of brothers) who got severe Covid (1 died, I think all 4 were on ventilators).
Researchers did full genetic analysis of the men to look for clues, I think esp because of they were young or young-ish.
In my county the F/M ratio of cases is equal (50.1 Female, 49.9 Male). But deaths are definitely skewed: 55/45 with men harder hit.
The JAMA article is pretty dense or maybe I am pretty dense but I think a point they are making is that people with certain genetic sequences could be more at risk. Also, if they are men and the key sequence is on the X chromosome the men might be more at risk because they only have one X chromosome.
OK, that was a huge lead up, but for cathyf, Ext, DrJ or other theoretically inclined person ... if something depended on an X chromosome gene, would that 55/45 ratio make sense? If a woman had 2 Xs, thus 2 alleles while a man had only 1 copy, what ratio of different outcomes would be "expected"? But perhaps it would also (or mostly) depend on how common the mutation/genetic-sequence was.
Posted by: JimNorCal | July 25, 2020 at 03:30 PM
State of WI, gender deaths are 54 M, 46 F, while cases are 48 M 52 F.

I also saw something about a study of two European countries, one with opened schools and one not. The number of teachers who got COVID was higher in the one with closed schools. Could be other factors at work, but this is what so many people can’t comprehend: that closing one thing down doesn’t eliminate the risk. It just changes the mechanism.
The Cornell people at least took that possibility into account in deciding to reopen. They realized that if students didn’t come to campus they would still be living somewhere, interacting with others. They concluded the risks were on balance lower if students came back to campus. I don’t get the impression the geniuses at Harvard and MIT gave that a thought.

It’s been known for some time that men have worse outcomes from COVID than women. I’ve seen various theories, at least one hormonal rather than genetic, not that those are mutually exclusive. Don’t remember the specifics, but something about testosterone, IIRC. Of course men have worse outcomes from lots of things, which is partly why we have lower life expectancy. I’m pretty sure it’s no just due to accidents and non-natural causes. I recall that a significant majority of miscarriages are males.

The first two years I was teaching, back in the mid 1970's, I must have had every cold and flu that was going around. After that I never got sick again. I think school teachers develop some kind of super-immunity.
I taught at The Chinquapin School in Highlands, TX., for 15 years. It is unique in that it is a college prep boarding school for inner-city students. It was started by Bob Moore, who was the head of the English Dept. at St Johns School in Houston. He felt that the kids on the east side of town (inner city) deserved the same education as those on the west side (River Oaks). The school motto is Quid pro Quo. The students paid $5.00/ week in tuition, but were expected to do all the chores required to keep the school running. All of the other expenses were from donations from Houston businesses and individuals. Below is a video on the 50th anniversary. Some of my former students are in it. I think this is the type of institution that even OL would approve. 85% of the school's graduates go on to graduate from a four year university.

I never wear a mask outdoors and I've had a number of stupid masked drones give me a furtive look at first, then a stern look, but when I lock eyes with them they back down and look away. I'm itching for an altercation with Mr. or Mrs. Karen, and I'm sure I'm not alone.

jimmyk,
yes, there are people who really want to make it in NYC and they are now crowding the Hamptons out of groceries, wine, parking spots, and better reservations:) The Hamptons are the holy grail of white privilege and even though it has a fantastic history of being a terminus of the underground railroad, you won't meet any of those descents in the more favored eateries or bars.
I understand that in the age of CoVid it is over-run and the Citerellas's of the world are doing land rush biz.
Long live Citerella!

How can any white person accept such disrespect and condescending insults? I really don't get it.
Most don't, but may keep quiet for fear of their jobs or their lives. But there are some mentally ill people with low self-esteem or other issues that just fall right into line. Many of them, unfortunately, run our educational institutions.

mike (in Houston),
What a great story about a great school. Even though Frederick's school is a little more privilged, there is nothing like a boarding school education, no matter youtr life status. Both my wife and I are products of Catholic boarding schools, mine in upstate NY and hers in Wales on the shores of Bristol Bay.
I will keep Chinquapin in my giving porfolio for future consideration.

Indiana had a new high of 1000+ plus Covide cases yesterday.
surprisingly, I was also provided with the Denominator, 12,500 new tests. A new time high.
I was introduced to fractions in 4th grade.
As I remember it, you put the numerator over the Denominator and you get a percentage.
I'm gonna go out on a limb, here...
If you test more, you'll find more???
Math is hard...

We're just getting some of the outer bands. Nothing really dangerous. It will rain for 15 min. then stop, then an hour later it will rain again.
To give you an idea about what the students at Cinquapin studied:
Bob and his wife developed a 5 year vocabulary course based on Latin and Greek roots.
I taught a senior seminar which included:
Plato-The Republic
Augustine - City of God, Confessions
Marcus Aurelius - Meditations
Machiavelli - The Prince
John Locke - 2nd Treatise
Rousseau - The Social Contract
Marx- The Communist Manifesto
Mill - On Liberty
It was a great class, and the kids got it!
