Per Politico there is no obvious pick for Biden's as VP. Instead, its the "Yes, but..." list.
Biden's VP shortlist comes up short
Plenty of the contenders are fine or even good. But all of them come with a “but” attached. “There is no one ideal home run choice,” one adviser says.
I find this insightful:
Many Democrats agree that the running mate decision is so personal that it will be made primarily by Biden himself rather than, like some policy issues, a committee of his closest advisers. That has created a parlor game for many Democrats trying to get inside the candidate’s head.
“Put yourself in the mind of Joe Biden,” said one Democratic strategist. “Who is Joe Biden? He spent his entire adult life in the United States Senate. He’s a foreign policy maven. He really takes it seriously. So when he says I need someone on Day One to take over, that specifically means they can deal with China and Russia on Day One. To me, that means it’s not going to be a mayor. And maybe not even a governor. He has a bias towards senators. But it also has to be next generation. So not Warren, who is 71. She performed significantly under expectations. That would lead you to two senators: Kamala Harris and Tammy Duckworth. Who else meets that mold? Susan Rice: ready on Day One for Russia and China.”
Finding a VP who will back Biden, not start running for the 2024 nomination immediately, will also be a problem.
From another perspective, put yourself in the shoes of Biden's longtime Inner Circle of advisers. An experienced Washington hand will be a rival power center; a charismatic unknown may help boost the ticket in a swing state but will not have the independent power of a Dick Cheney.
Can an unknown be ready from Day One? I like Congressperson Val Demings, former Orlando police chief. Key swing state, Law and Order cred. Sen. Tammy Duckworth may look more prepared to stare down the Russkies. She's a Woman of Color, although Thai not Black,so that may be a problem.
First?

More taxpayer money needed--
As this paper was being written, school systems across the country were increasingly announcing plans for full or partial distance learning to respond to COVID-19, and it seems likely that more school systems may implement these plans should the pandemic surge in the fall or winter. As a result, working parents with school-age children are faced with the challenge of how to ensure that their children are in a safe learning setting while they work—a challenge that is even more daunting for families with low incomes, families who face greater health risks, and families who face inequities in access to educational and health resources as well as employment options. Unfortunately, these challenges are even greater because the pandemic has seriously constrained before-and after-school programs along with the center-based and home-based child care settings that usually provide after-school and child care supports to working parents. This working paper gives an overview of the key issues and challenges facing both parents and after-school programs and child care providers as they try to ensure that school-age children are safe, supervised, and able to engage in quality distance learning while their parents work.It then lists policy strategies that policymakers could implement to better support these families and caregivers. These policy areas include cross-system coordination and collaboration, funding, child care subsidies,21stCenturyCommunityLearning Centers, child care licensing, grants, training and technical assistance, and the Child and Adult Care Food Program.

Nike is laying off staff and announces a $790 million loss in its latest quarterly earnings
Donahoe said the layoffs were not related to the pandemic or costs but described them as an effort to restructure the "overburdened matrix" of the company, according to Complex.
The announcement came shortly after Nike reported a net loss of $790 million in the fourth quarter, partly the result of the COVID-19 pandemic's impact on stores across North America.
.. so is it COVID-19 related or not ...

Microsoft told employees to work from home. One consequence was brutal
The problem -- and for some bosses, great delight -- of modern technology is that it makes you believe employees are available any time, any place, anywhere. And really, how many humans are at their best earlier than they're used to or later than they'd prefer to?
Please, I'll get to the happier elements of this research shortly. But when working from home Microsoft's employees apparently spent 10 percent more time in meetings.

Paywalled, rats...
Trustify founder Danny Boice has been charged with fraud and money laundering for what Justice Department officials have described as a scheme that resulted “in millions of dollars of losses to investors” and in which Boice allegedly “misappropriated substantial portions of the investments” in Trustify for his own personal gain.
Boice, 41, is charged with five counts of wire fraud, one count of securities fraud and two counts of money laundering in an indictment dated July 22 and unsealed Friday. Acting Assistant Attorney General Brian Rabbitt of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division, U.S. Attorney G. Zachary Terwilliger for the Eastern District of Virginia, and Assistant Director in Charge Timothy Slater of the FBI’s Washington field office announced the charges.
Boice could not be immediately reached for comment.
The indictment alleges that between 2015 and 2019, Boice would “materially misrepresent the growth and size of Trustify’s business” in order to secure more money from investors. In all, during that time, more than 90 investors put a total $18.5 million into the now-defunct company, according to the charging document. Trustify, previously based in Arlington, had provided a platform meant to quickly connect customers with private investigators.
The DOJ charges that Boice allegedly told a representative of one investor in 2016 that the startup was earning $500,000 per month in revenue, when the actual revenue was far less. In another instance, per the indictment, Boice allegedly sent an email to a potential third-party investor posing as a representative of an investment bank to suggest it was investing in Trustify in order to secure nearly $2 million in funding from that third party.
The indictment does not include any names of investors or entities.
In a separate filing last year to Delaware’s Chancery Court as part of bankruptcy proceedings for Trustify, investor Anchorage Illiquid Opportunities Offshore Master V LP had alleged that it was tricked into investing nearly $2 million in Trustify in 2018 through an email it said was purported to be from a well-known investment bank.
According to the Justice Department’s charging document released Friday, Boice also allegedly “diverted millions of dollars of investor funds to his own personal benefit … to fund his lavish lifestyle.” That included a wire transfer of $291,190 as part of a down payment for a home in Alexandria and another for $83,000 for travel by private jet to Vermont, the indictment states.
In early 2019, Boice allegedly told a representative of an investment firm that Trustify had around $18 million in its corporate bank account, when, in fact, that account’s balance was less than $10,000, DOJ authorities said.
If Boice is found guilty, he would be expected to forfeit $7.4 million, according to the indictment.
Last year, Trustify’s creditors had successfully petitioned to place the company into bankruptcy. The court-appointed receiver for that case had, in January, found no “viable assets” remaining of the company, but did find that Trustify principals “appear to have withdrawn inexplicable large sums from the accounts through wire transfers,” according to a report that he submitted to Chancery Court in Delaware and was obtained by the Washington Business Journal.
That included wire transfers of about $800,000 that appeared to go to Boice, and another $300,000 to accounts jointly held by Boice and Jennifer Mellon, his wife at the time and former president of Trustify, though the receiver said the investigation was ongoing and could not determine whether the withdrawals were for an improper use or if there was a way to recover those funds.
Mellon, who is now listed as the confidential assistant to the chairman of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, is not named in the indictment released Friday.
Trustify has separately been battling various stakeholders in court for more than two years. The company was sued for payment by its law firm and a communications firm. In March 2019, several former employees of Trustify also won a default judgment against the firm, while Trustify’s Arlington landlord, JBG Smith Properties, also won a judgmentagainst the company for back rent.
In August 2019, the company was hit with a $600,000 Virginia state lien. The company has since relinquished its Arlington headquarters space.
Boice has had ties to another Arlington tech company, CommuniClique, whose CEO, Andy Powers was just sentenced last week to more than 12 years in prison for what the U.S. Department of Justice called an investment fraud and money laundering conspiracy that caused $25 million in losses. Boice was listed as a director for CommuniClique in a 2010 Securities and Exchange Commission filing, and Powers was listed as an executive officer in another startup Boice had helped found, Speek Inc.

Relinking this;
America Is Reopening. But have we flattened the curve?
That is Johns Hopkins asking that question.
When I look at their various graphs I see 4 states that utterly "failed" in flattening the curve; NY, NJ, MA and RI. CT came close to failing. A few, LA, IL are in a midrange in that they "succeeded" in flattening it somewhat.
The rest have very flat curves while the first four were spiking on very unflat curves indeed.
However, almost universally what we now see is those states that did not flatten it initially now have low rates with no or very small rebounds.
Those that flattened the curve moderately are now experiencing substantial increases.
Those that were very successful in flattening it experienced large surges after the first four were already back down nearly to the baseline.
There are a few small, largely rural states that have stayed relatively low throughout which is to be expected as that is the pattern with any infectious, communicable disease.
The bug is pretty much everywhere and it is like the Fram oil filter; you can pay it now or you can pay it later. Regardless of whatever mitigation and suppression some dumbass governors want to inflict it will work its way through whatever number of people were going to get it and that's that.
The real question Johns Hopkins and everyone else should be asking is why shouldn't we hang the dopes who told us to commit economic suicide to avoid catching a bad cold, especially since their remedy doesn't seem in the long run to have had any effect on whether we would catch the bad cold?
Posted by: Ignatz Ratzkiwatzki | July 27, 2020 at 01:25 PM

It was LUNACY from the get-go.
Our cure will have killed more people than Covid ever did and the economic capital that took generations to accumulate which was already and is being destroyed will curtail the lifting of all boats here and abroad for lifetimes of those living through this.
All the leaders needed to ask is "what are the costs and what are the benefits" of what their underlings were suggesting.

Absolutely. And many of us were saying this from the start.
And nowhere - as you say, from the President on down to county and city governments, from anyone in the "public health" sector, from anyone in the MSM - has there been the slightest sense that any of the costs to the lockdowns and other actions were even considered, let alone contrasted with the cost of not doing them and allowing COVID to spread faster.

My point was about his productive use of the language including multi syllable words and hierarchical phrasing etc...plus the clear use of logic in almost mathematical proof style reasoning. That HE could write that way was one thing. That his targeted audience wanted it that way spoke volumes to me.

Regardless of whatever mitigation and suppression some dumbass governors want to inflict it will work its way through whatever number of people were going to get it and that's that.
Wait, so you're saying that Cuomo's regulation of precisely how much food one must order per alcoholic drink at NY bars is not going to have miraculous life-saving benefits?
Seriously, the only sensible conclusion from everything we know is that to the extent we needed any mitigation policies, they should have been directed solely at making sure those who got the bug would be those best suited to survive it, so we get to herd immunity with the least mortality possible. Which is what we've been saying all along: Protect the elderly and vulnerable, and let everyone else go about their lives.
And really, no "policy" is really needed, since for the most part people who need to protect themselves can do so, with the help of their families.

The dead man at the pool today told me my county is going to force mandatory masks every where for every body on Wednesday. I asked why they would do that now, since we have very little covid and it's going away. He said the 3 alderman who voted against mandatory masks last time got so much threatening hate mail, they changed their minds.
Harrumph!

I don't know about the rest of you, but I can't breath with a mask on. And I can't see thru my glasses. I'm blind enough!

I think I get the nomenclature now via Ext's 2:19.
When nothing violent happens things can be characterized as peaceful.
When violence occurs the peacefulness has intensified.

He said the 3 alderman who voted against mandatory masks last time got so much threatening hate mail, they changed their minds.
Between that, and the supine response of local gov'ts to arson and looting, and the absolute surrender of most institutions to tiny mobs of cancel culture garbage people, it's clear that the lesson is:
People in power will cave in to threats - the more ugly and violent and harmful to their personal interests, the better. I guess our side needs to start rioting and burning and boycotting and sending death threats, too. If that's the only thing our elected leaders and bureaucrats will listen to...

Wearing a mask bothers my sinuses, which in turn makes me feel like I have a toothache. Very unpleasant so apart from exercising I limit the reasons to leave the house.
I keep an ongoing list of what I need from grocery store and try to go once a week 1st thing when it opens.
I did notice saturday at the outdoor farmers mkt that required masks a significant # of the women shoppers thought a mask that said "VOTE!" was the style to be wearing.
Anyone have a good nickname for that mentality?

If Hazlitt's book has fallen into public domain, there's a pdf in the external links section of the wiki article about it.
Posted by: Dave (in MA) | July 27, 2020 at 02:37 PM
I'd call that mentality is DUMBFUKISM.
Posted by: GUS | July 27, 2020 at 02:39 PM
Tom R would choose Jeff Sessions or Vindman.

I try to get out of the house every day (besides walking the dog, where I don't wear a mask and rarely see anyone else walking around wearing one). I go to the supermarket, beer distributor, the nursery, hardware store; it feels good making the car go vrrrrm vrrroom, gives me the probably false sensation that I'm alive.
