Per Politico there is no obvious pick for Biden's as VP. Instead, its the "Yes, but..." list.
Biden's VP shortlist comes up short
Plenty of the contenders are fine or even good. But all of them come with a “but” attached. “There is no one ideal home run choice,” one adviser says.
I find this insightful:
Many Democrats agree that the running mate decision is so personal that it will be made primarily by Biden himself rather than, like some policy issues, a committee of his closest advisers. That has created a parlor game for many Democrats trying to get inside the candidate’s head.
“Put yourself in the mind of Joe Biden,” said one Democratic strategist. “Who is Joe Biden? He spent his entire adult life in the United States Senate. He’s a foreign policy maven. He really takes it seriously. So when he says I need someone on Day One to take over, that specifically means they can deal with China and Russia on Day One. To me, that means it’s not going to be a mayor. And maybe not even a governor. He has a bias towards senators. But it also has to be next generation. So not Warren, who is 71. She performed significantly under expectations. That would lead you to two senators: Kamala Harris and Tammy Duckworth. Who else meets that mold? Susan Rice: ready on Day One for Russia and China.”
Finding a VP who will back Biden, not start running for the 2024 nomination immediately, will also be a problem.
From another perspective, put yourself in the shoes of Biden's longtime Inner Circle of advisers. An experienced Washington hand will be a rival power center; a charismatic unknown may help boost the ticket in a swing state but will not have the independent power of a Dick Cheney.
Can an unknown be ready from Day One? I like Congressperson Val Demings, former Orlando police chief. Key swing state, Law and Order cred. Sen. Tammy Duckworth may look more prepared to stare down the Russkies. She's a Woman of Color, although Thai not Black,so that may be a problem.

I've always considered tourism an unhealthy industry because it carries a sense of welfarism, and therefore a them-us resentment with it.
There's nothing wrong with the desire to visit nice or interesting places or even to live there. In that sense it carries little or none of the paternalistic baggage government do-gooder welfare does.
But to many of the inhabitants, especially the insecure ones, they resent as table scraps the benefits they receive from the outsiders and it just reinforces the them/outsiders vs us/natives mentality.
The only thing that makes it worse is the 'oh, I love to visit and experience and learn from the amazing native cultures I encounter' crap, which is, often rightly, perceived as a variation on the noble savage theme.
I always thought the healthiest vision of it was 'yeah, tourism is basically a selfish act. Sure I spend money here and people have jobs because of it, but I basically do it not to benefit others, but myself.'
That's not an unhealthy selfishness; it's just enjoying the fruits of ones labor or enlightened self-interest. But other than memories that one takes to the grave and pictures and movies to endlessly bore ones friends with tourism doesn't produce a whole lot on the tourist's end of things.
I've usually noticed a healthier dynamic if interacting with the owners of the accommodations or local businesses, but for those with jobs unrelated to tourism and those merely paid to service the out-of-towners there's often an unspoken and unpleasant subtext.

Iggy, we draw a distinction between "Summer People" and "Tourists".
Summer people often own property, pay taxes, and spend up to half a year on the island.
I count many locals whom I used to hire among my friends - almost all of them now have second homes in FL where they spend "the other half" of the year, just as we do.
So what is the difference?
Posted by: Old Lurker | July 29, 2020 at 11:19 AM
Was talking to our church secretary yesterday morning.
She and her husband had hiked into a popular mountain lake at about 9,000 feet a week or two ago.
There was a large family by the lake and a piece of litter blew onto the lake. A young guy dove into to retrieve it but the wind kept it just out of reach. After a bit he apparently looked to be in trouble and his family began calling to him. My friend and others tried to encourage him to keep going as he was now about half way across but suddenly he just sank. There were two or three guys there with search and rescue experience and they were able to get him to the surface and onto shore where they did CPR. There was enough cell reception to call 9/11 but because of high winds it took well over an hour for a helicopter to land and he was never revived. The next day would have been his 21st birthday.
Can't imagine being a parent or sibling and having to watch that happen.

Summer people have made more of a commitment but they're still going to be outsiders to the insecure locals. Perhaps even more so because they're often wealthier than the standard tourist. There's no guilt or wrongdoing on the part of a tourist or summer person. But resentment of outsiders, especially if you're dependent on them is human nature.
When I say it's unhealthy I mean I think for the locals it displaces other industry that doesn't breed that same us-them resentment and envy.
And it plays out much more noticeably in places highly dependent on tourism.

I agree with Captain. I gained a lot of knowledge of other cultures, art, historical events, etc. that my schools NEVER covered.
With my family we vacationed in Wisconsin and Florida (and on the way I learned to love grits)and saw Spanish moss. In addition, it helped me understand the Civil Rights Movement because my sister and I, traveling through Georgia with grandparents, were truly shocked by the "No coloreds allowed" signs and sharecropper shacks.
As a young adult I was thrilled to see the Rosetta Stone and Elgin Marbles, as well as Westminster Abbey.
That's just the tip of the iceberg, so I simply disagree with Iggy and agree with Captain.

Super-Traitor John Brennan Discovered He Was Blocked from Classified Info Access while Working on Book
He writes in his forthcoming book, Undaunted: My Fight Against America’s Enemies, at Home and Abroad, that after months of "haggling" he discovered the CIA was abiding by the directive Trump gave in August 2018 "that purportedly forbids anyone in the intelligence community from sharing classified information with me."
The White House confirmed the directive was being enforced, which is news considering the New York Times reported in May of last year that the president never revoked Brennan's security clearance.
“The President has constitutional authority to control access to classified information, which he exercised here in view of Mr. Brennan’s erratic behavior and the President’s belief that access to classified information should be solely for the benefit of the government and the American people,” White House spokesman Judd Deere said.

Ig "When I say it's unhealthy I mean I think for the locals it displaces other industry that doesn't breed that same us-them resentment and envy."
At the height of the Whaling Industry, Nantucket enjoyed one of the richest communities in the US (fact). Within ten years of oil being discovered in PA, the place was a ghost town for decades. No reason whatsoever for any business to locate here rather than the mainland, so none did and still don't. Eventually mainlanders discovered it was a nice place to summer and that has been the sole source of income for the island since about 1895.
The locals are rich nowadays because work they used to do themselves and trades they passed to their kids, they hire out to Spanish speakers whom they pay $20 per hour but bill to us for $85-$100 per hour, plus travel time. Those employees also return to their countries for the winter and return in May.

TK, from our editorial:
...
Democrats pursued Barr as if they were the ones afraid of getting found out.
Collins asked Barr, “Would this body rise up of the capitol was attacked?” Barr answered, “This body? I'm not sure.”
Under Barr, and to the apparent chagrin of House Democrats, provoked federal marshals didn’t take the bait to use excessive violence. In the end, Barr, challenged House Democrats to face up to their political charade.
Barr asked the panel why Democrats had not condemned mob violence: "Violence against Federal courts has to stop. Can we hear something like that?" No Democrat responded.
House Democrats repeatedly misrepresented circumstances, misused statistics, and played to emotions. The leadership of a party that represents half of the country undermined the rule of law, the concept of justice, and any candidate that would keep them in the House majority.
Misguided stunts by Democrat House leaders put every single Democratic seat in Congress at risk in November.

I wouldn’t put it past Trump and his skill set at deal making to be highlighting HCQ so vociferously at the moment as a power play against pharmaceutical companies to bring them to the table on drug prices.
“We know you guys suppressed the effectiveness of a cheap drug so you could market high profit shit. We can back off and you can sign the deal, or we can ramp up the pressure.”
The timing of his executive order and the HCQ fanfare does not seem coincidental.

There would be plenty to go around if the FDA would stop mucking around and discouraging its use for COVID. Although our rock is nominally similar to Nantucket, the demographics are quite different. We have a fairly large seasonal population, but for many of them this is the home base with the escape down in the CA or AZ desert for the winter. There’s no bias built into that mix. Our ‘tourists’ are mostly weekenders who are tolerated by the locals, but a lot of grumbling under the breath when they treat the place like Disney World where anywhere they step off a curb and wander into the street at their own damn time that causes brake squeals get a stare back at you with a “what the hell, dude?” look.
The regular dudes around here that do all the real work (Mexicans mostly doing landscaping), used to have bumper stickers that said “If it’s tourist season, why can’t we shoot them?”

People just do not get that the person staying away from everyone is keeping them far safer than anyone with a mask on.

There's a member of the Horde who is ordinarily very intelligent who has completely lost his shit over masks. At first I thought he was playing a role because it was so over the top but it's real. I haven't called him out on it because I like him and he doesn't seem open to constructive criticism; plus there are others who've dropped the hammer with no worry about hurt feelings. But it's been odd to observe.

Apparently Gohmert got the WuFlu, detected by screening before traveling with POTUS on AF1.
He has an odd theory that he got it from wearing the mask that he rarely wore.

sbwaters,
I HAVE noticed that the democrats seem to be unpleasant and unattractive people, who do not appeal to a great many people. Their members in Congress seem to be increasingly elderly, overweight, or dim bulbs. Thus, their ranks do not attract young, attractive, and successful people. That's why they end up with the blue-haired commies and crooks.
So, I believe while they won't completely disappear, I do believe they will become a smaller and less-appealing party. Would YOU want to hang around people like Nadler, Pelosi, and Swallwell?

I was on Air Force One flying to the Great State of Texas, where I just landed. It is AMAZING in watching @FoxNews how different they are from four years ago. Not even watchable. They totally forgot who got them where they are!

Anyone watching sissyline’s tech theater?

From the AP story;
Here's a way; put a sign next to it that says "This isn't a confederate flag, dumbshits."
Also from the AP story;
The proposed sign would obviously benefit the writer and editor of the story.

I've seen a lot of seemingly intelligent and reasonable people lose it over WuFlu. The wannabe dictators really lucked into something that causes people to lose their grip on reality, and become subservient to their leaders. I don't think it was necessarily planned that way, but it was just one in a succession of efforts that for now has paid off for them.

I've had a real heads up on some of my so called peers, jimmyk. Very few have passed the test.

So progs think claiming a guy was disrespectful to the single group held in the most contempt by the largest number of people in the country is the way to clean up the mess they made yesterday?
Who am I to disagree? Have at it progs.

If the Federal Government and its brilliant Law Enforcement (Homeland) didn’t go into Portland one week ago, there would be no Portland -- It would be burned and beaten to the ground. If the Mayor and Governor...
...do not stop the Crime and Violence from the Anarchists and Agitators immediately, the Federal Government will go in and do the job that local law enforcement was supposed to do!
