Trump had a baffling tweet suggesting we might need to delay the election until it was safe to vote.
In a calm, measured reaction the head of the Federalist Society said a speculative tweet like this is grounds for immediate impeachment. OK, that's a bit of an over-reaction but it is revealing that a prominent conservative and beneficiary of the Trump/McConnell Judge Confirmation Assembly Line would openly rebel over, well, nothing.
Yuval Levin of National Review takes us through election law. Timing is up to Congress and some tweaks might make sense for 2020 since we will have a surge of mail-in ballots to count:
But there may well be a way for Congress to help the election go more smoothly in those later two parts of the code I just cited above. The problem mail-in voting can create, especially in jurisdictions that aren’t used to so much of it, isn’t about fraud but about delays in counting and verifying results. So what may need to be adjusted is not the date of the election but the Electoral College deadlines that follow it.
I made a case for a reform like this (with Kevin Johnson of the Election Reformers Network) earlier this month in the Washington Post. As things now stand, election day is November 3, states need to finalize their results by December 8 to avoid their being challenged in Congress, and then members of the Electoral College are to meet on December 14. Congress certifies the results on January 6, and the winner is inaugurated January 20. That means that there are 78 days between the election and the inauguration, but states have only 35 of those days to finalize their results. As we’ve seen in some primaries this year, that simply may not be enough time in some contested states.
So rather than changing the election date, Congress should act to push back—just for this year—the date by which states have to finalize results and the date on which the electors meet. Pushing those back by two or three weeks could give contested states a lot more breathing room to deal with the actual challenges involved in mail-in voting while the election, certification, and inauguration would all go on as scheduled.
ccgirl,
I'm glad you enjoyed it! Personally I am not a big squash fan, unless it is in curry.
MrsJ has found that the major seed companies (Burpee, Park) and the heritage seed places from whom she orders are very good at giving you what you ordered. Some of the smaller ones can be hit-or-miss, but she has found a few that are quite good.
What is your experience?
Posted by: DrJ | July 31, 2020 at 09:41 PM
Well, since it’s quiet I will update you all on the advice I asked for last weekend. I have been ready for all challenges. And ready to respond. But alas, no good opportunities. Instead I got this situation. I have a very nice customer who had a stroke a few years ago, and since then he just doesn’t get signals, and has few filters. So I replied to him about the weather the other day, and how it seems the meteorologists can’t get the weather predictions at all lately. He began a rant about how the Fox meteorologists are are large breasted women, and in fact all women anchors at Fox are there only because they have large boobs. The entire time I am telling him to stop and holding up my hands in the stop signal. Jeepers, the 19 year old said to me after he left, “What the f was that!” I am never quite prepared.

And his problem with that was what exactly, lol.
Posted by: Narciso | July 31, 2020 at 09:48 PM
Well yeah, he seemed to have a problem with it, but I forgot the “do not engage” rule. He’s a very nice man, but his condition makes me want to avoid him lately. Well, now I know why!

ccgirl,
There is one other garden thing that you may wish to consider.
We have a superb local nursery that raises their plants in their own greenhouses. They know the climate, and what grows well here.
So each year MrsJ gets a few plants from them, just to see how we like them and how the do. That is how we found the Amish paste tomatoes.
It is convenient to settle in on a few favorites. But it is great to add to the diversity too.
You may wish to see if there is a similar nursery/garden store in you area, and experiment.

Burpee seeds this year, Dr J. My garden is so new it probably was not properly prepared in the pre-season. My squash have various colors, and I read on the Burpee site that many have had issues with this seed. I also have cucumbers, and they are delicious. By accident I planted a squash with the cukes. The vines that grow from the hill with the squash mixed in seem to have odd shaped cukes. No idea if the seed was off, or if the squash is affecting the plant.
We had the Burpee in this year to the store. Prior years we had Livingston seeds. Not sure why it changed. I have delegated that job. Also we never sold much seed, so we cut way back this year. The irony.
I also have mixed peppers with seeds left over from last year. They seem to be growing, and need time still to mature. I have started keeping notes as it’s a lot to keep track of, and my memory is not as great as I think it is.
Posted by: CCGirl | July 31, 2020 at 09:58 PM
I have a customer who runs a local veggie farm. She has the best tomatoes in the area. She offered me some extra Boston lettuce early on but I declined as I felt I had over planted. Well that was a stupid decision. Boston lettuce is delicious. I would never ask for a tomato seedling, but her advice I will always ask.

ccgirl,
We have a lot of the crop that has yet to mature. I won't go into what is planted, since I don't think it is of general interest.
The tomato sauce was superb!

We all already know who we're voting for, so why don't we just move the election date to tomorrow so the pandemic can be over?

Yes, I agree. Probs not of general interest. Makes me think of Cheaper By the Dozen. We played the audiobook when the kids were little in the car on a family vacation. “Is this of general interest?” Lol. Not sure that you were referring to the book, but it brought memories back.

"The enlisted force has been the weakest link in China’s military modernization for decades, inhibiting unit readiness and operational capabilities. In the late 1990s, China’s senior military leadership decided to build a professional noncommissioned officer (NCO) corps. Yet, 40 years after the Chinese military began its long-term modernization process, the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) remains a conscription-style army. Recent and potential future adjustments to the enlisted force are intended to correct longstanding problems and increase the PLA’s capability to perform its missions of deterrence, warfighting, and military operations other than war. However, this year’s coronavirus crisis forced the postponement of the most ambitious measure in decades, designed to lessen the adverse effects of the conscription system, thus delaying an important step toward progress. Traditional social and interpersonal relationships — which the PLA is limited in its ability to modify — will further affect whether recent personnel reforms will be successful. These personnel changes will take longer than the introduction of new weapons and technology."

And the Marines aren't waiting around while other people debate their plans. They are quite serious about the need to re-commit to their earlier mission of being primarily a seaborne fighting force and not a smaller specialized land force than the Army.

I think AB may be correct that Marines serve as embassy guards due to their original mission statement flexibility.
I think it also might have something to do with the way ambassadors traveled in the old days, via ship.

Rocco, steel mesh arrived Thursday and I tried it out yesterday. Aeropress coffee has more flavor than the automatic. There's some slight tradeoff; more fiddling about rather than flipping a switch and mug is only half full. Time to first cup is faster. It's easier to press with the mesh than the paper filter. Overall a win. I will condition myself to a bit of fiddling and a half full mug. Thanks for sharing.

“Marines serve as embassy guards due to their original mission statement flexibility.”
Marines were originally an infantry unit at sea during the Revolution. Their primary jobs were conducting and repelling boarding actions, and amphibious landings. But over the years they were used increasingly for other purposes, including special missions for the State department as guards and couriers. The “other purposes” were formalized in 1947 where the “as the President May direct” language was added. That language has been in every Congressional authorization of the Marines to this day.
The embassy guard mission was formalized about the same time by a different law.
The “ZOMG,TRUMP DIRECTLY CONTROLS THE MARINES!” is of course true. Every president has. The War Powers Act effectively put ALL the services under the direct control of the President, deployable without any Congressional action required.
