Since Trump likes trolling so much he should declare he will withhold all Federal law enforcement funds until every Dem led municipality has abolished its police department and replaced it with a Committee of Public Safety.

Melinda

Dave:

“So. The -32.9% is the Change from the prior Quarter quoted as a Percentage. Call it acceleration from a certain previously known steady speed.

So, and I can only explain this from a physics standpoint, so I’m using cars.

You’re going a steady 60 in the left lane passing a slow semi on a slight curve. Oncoming semi appears before you can overtake, you brake to drop back behind your side semi.

The -32.9% is your rate of change from 60 down to less than that of semi you were passing, in which this case would be dropping from 60 (-5.0 in first quarter) to 40.2 mph to get behind the semi (or -9.5 in 2nd quarter).

So you’re actually annualizing the measured final steady speed AFTER braking, but using the 32.9% deceleration to determine what that final speed measured actually was.

Two different numbers entirely. -9.5 is the final measured speed as implied by the measured rate of change(-32.9) to that speed.

Does that help?“

Part 2:

“It actually works better if you think you’re overtaking a braking semi (-5.0) going down a steep hill and a semi is coming up the hill. You have to slow down to -9.5 to get back behind by braking, or changing your speed by -32.9% from the -5.0.“

Pessimism is an easier charge to make against someone pointing out what appears to be, in their view of the playing field, an obvious issue of our side not being on a good footing to respond in kind to the opponents, let alone defeat them.

Defeatism is the Godwin’s Law caricature of those same people when the issues they bring up cause sadness and charges of Pessimism aren’t making an emotional dent.

Jane,

Thanks for letting us know about Herman Cain's daughter being sick with the virus, and him taking her to the hospital. Where did you hear that? I want to be ready to quote with some of these jerks.

SHE didn't, I did. I got it from a friend's personal FB page (the page is public, but it is his personal postings from family stuff to links to his weekly columns that are published statewide by multiple local online "papers") who worked for the same local TV station WSB as Herman and was a frequent commentator on Herman's show. His name is Bill Crane. He is the WSB election analyst for all election coverage.

Stephanie Nene Not Your Normal Granma

2020 continues to be the year of the GREAT Suck. Atlanta and the world just lost two greats of the Civil Rights community, the Reverend C.T. Vivian and Georgia's Fifth District Congressman John Lewis. I knew and interacted many times with Congressman Lewis, and briefly with Reverend Vivian, but today brought me news of the loss of another leader, and in this case, a good friend.
Herman Cain, a successful entrepreneur, former Presidential and U.S. Senate candidate and longtime radio talk show talent at WSB Radio, as well as nationally syndicated commentator succumbed to the Corona Virus. He will not be the first person taken too soon by this pandemic, nor the last, but the place he leaves behind was and is a unique one.
Herman was a Black conservative. They are not as rare as a white Rhinocerous, or white deer, but they can be hunted and targeted, even within their own communities, almost as fiercely.
I met Herman, at the kind introduction of longtime Georgia GOP activist Dot Burns in 2004 when he was seeking the GOP nomination for U.S. Senate. Herman was his usual cordial, always positive and high energy self. Our first conversation lasted well beyond pleasantries and about 15 minutes into that chat Herman said, "It has been a pleasure meeting you, and I hope I can count on your vote."
Though I'm not entirely sure why I felt obligated to respond to that directly, I came back with... "You have impressed me Mr. Cain, and though I have already heard and now experienced good things in you, you will go far in politics, here and I think elsewhere, but I have already committed my vote to my longtime friend and sometime mentor, Johnny Isakson."
Herman continued smiling, did not miss a beat and said, "Well, maybe I will give you a reason to change your mind, but a pleasure meeting you just the same."
He went and rejoined Dot, for a continuing tour of the room. In 2006 I would join the large ensemble team of talent at AM750WSB, the then-largest radio news operation in the southeast, and continually one of the highest-rated News/Talk format stations in the nation for decades.
Herman Cain was originally brought in to the WSB Radio team as a fill-in host, and I would later learn in addition to an impressive business career with Burger King, Pillsbury, Godfather's Pizza and the National Restaurant Association, that Herman had also chaired the regional Federal Reserve Bank during his tenure in Kansas City.
I got to know Herman, heard often of his wife Gloria and two children...and as Herman's conservative star was rising, he became WSB Radio's nighttime conservative voice and talk show host. The New Herman Cain Show was born.
The talent roster within Cox Media Group was and is deep. Herman had access to all of the news and talk talent as well as the inestimable resource of the walking Encyclopedia of Presidential elections and Congressional politics, Jamie Dupree, who was already a regular contributor to the Sean Hannity program, also syndicated and then appearing earlier in the day on WSB.

Stephanie Nene Not Your Normal Granma

Pertinent part of Bill's post:

One last anecdote, as news outlets and particularly cable networks, will continue to insinuate that Herman caught COVID19 while attending a Trump campaign rally in Tulsa, sans mask, I think you should know that it was Cain's daughter who came home to be with Herman and his wife Gloria, experiencing several COVID19 symptoms. Herman later was taking her to be cared for at an area hospital. Herman having had multiple forms of chemotherapy as aggressive treatments against his prior cancers had a somewhat compromised immune system. As his daughter was being taken in to care, Herman stood up out of his car to check on her and collapsed at the door to the E.R. He was taken into the hospital as well, and unfortunately this virus did the rest...but even until the end, Herman was fighting back and I hear from those who did speak to or Email with him, he still had those jokes and that smile and high spirit with him until the end.

F Typhus...

Ignatz Ratzkiwatzki

--Defeatism is the Godwin’s Law caricature of those same people when the issues they bring up cause sadness and charges of Pessimism aren’t making an emotional dent.--

Perhaps.
But when I looked for definitions after I asked the question I got;

pessimism noun

pes·si·mism | \ ˈpe-sə-ˌmi-zəm
also ˈpe-zə- \

: an inclination to emphasize adverse aspects, conditions, and possibilities or to expect the worst possible outcome
: His pessimism about the future of our country depresses me.
****************
defeatism noun

de·feat·ism | \ di-ˈfē-ˌti-zəm
, dē- \

: an attitude of accepting, expecting, or being resigned to defeat
: It was a country that had succumbed to paralysis and defeatism and nostalgia.

The italics are actual examples at Dictionary.com the latter one being about the pre-Thatcher UK.
The first synonym listed for pessimism was defeatism and the first synonym listed for pessimism was defeatism.
So I still don't know what the difference is or if there is one.
I suppose a pessimist could say they hadn't given up fighting, only that it was futile, but a defeatist might say the same thing; they expect defeat but will go down swinging.
In either event does pessimism and/or defeatism make it less likely one will prevail? I'm pretty sure I do know the answer to that question.

rse

Yes, henry, but pertinent to who that MIT prof was that I raised with MM this morning.

I was on 3 webinars yesterday in a major threat to my sanity. Back to back and if parents really understood what digital learning married to Student Management Systems was throwing out and how learning standards actually work they would be horrified.

Another webinar pitched the techniques to teachers as "how to make learning stick". I may know how the neural net is to work and who created the theory now being implemented but teachers just get taught how to do it.

The 2nd webinar was tied to the ed lab in CO implicated in the columbine shooting since those kids had been guinea pigs for the template since at least upper elementary.

On GDP, I hesitate to go against Mel, but I think the way to see it is this: If GDP was 100 in 2019Q4, it was about 99 in 2020Q1 (-5% annualized decline) and about 90 in 2020Q2.

Incidentally, by contrast, Sweden had +0.1 in Q1. They haven't reported Q2 yet. So through March, by locking down we spent about $200 billion just in lost GDP (never mind all the stimulus money), and that will probably be more like $1 trillion through June, for essentially no benefits.

Iggy, I tend to think pessimism is a direction we are headed and defeatism is an end state.

But you can find whatever words you want to use on whomever you like.

The "hostility" you thought was in my post last night was a reaction to your simplistic comparison, for the purpose of dismissing my points, of historical challenges which were almost all "us" against an external enemy which is different from half of us wanting the boat to sink and the rest would rather it not. Yes the Civil War was different in your series.

You also dismissed the bell curve aspect of what sorts of people we had in the past and what sorts we have now as if since both periods had/have stars and also had/have losers, these times are same old same old.

Whatever.

Stephanie Nene Not Your Normal Granma

Even if Herman Cain caught it at a Trump rally, did Trump kidnap him and force him to attend?
People doing as they please and taking responsibility for their own actions just doesn't compute with a prog.

Reminder:

All persons at all destinations and those traveling with Trump are tested before any contact. All WH employees are tested daily.

If anyone backstage or on stage at the rally had Covid, they would have been tested with a negative result. So in that instance, it is either a false negative or no one at the rally that Herman came in contact with was positive...

Louie Gohmert was scheduled to fly on AF1 this week with Trump to an event and was banned from the travel and event once he tested positive. It's how Gohmert found out he was positive. So this result shows that the bubble around Trump is working.

Unless a prog wants to argue that the arbitrary 6 foot social distancing (spit) that Fauci insists is optimal isn't and Herman caught it from people in the crowd 20 or so feet from the podium as they NEVER had access to the stage or backstage.

Point that out and watch their heads explode. It is quite fun to watch their hamster wheel have fits and starts as to whether their medscience God Fauci is fallible or their supposition that Herman got the virus at the rally is faulty. Just be warned that the resultant spittle from said prog is toxic.

https://quillette.com/2020/07/29/why-democrats-are-trying-to-shut-me-up-about-climate-change-and-renewables/

I further made the case that climate change was distracting us from a far greater and more urgent threat, which is the global domination of nuclear energy by China and Russia, which could be disastrous for US interests and the future of liberalism and democracy around the world.

Nations that partner with Russia or China to build nuclear plants are effectively absorbed into their sphere of influence. The line between soft power and hard power runs through nuclear energy. On the one side is cheap and clean electricity. On the other, a stepping stone to a weapons program.

During today’s hearing, several Democratic members claimed that renewables today are cheaper than existing grid electricity. But if that were true, I replied, why do solar and wind developers require hundreds of billions of dollars from American taxpayers in the form of subsidies?

The Democrats are basing their climate agenda on what California did. But California’s electricity rates since 2011 rose six times more than they did in the rest of the US, thanks mainly to the deployment of renewables and the infrastructure they require, such as transmission lines.

Can’t question their religious beliefs, can we?
