Trump had a baffling tweet suggesting we might need to delay the election until it was safe to vote.
In a calm, measured reaction the head of the Federalist Society said a speculative tweet like this is grounds for immediate impeachment. OK, that's a bit of an over-reaction but it is revealing that a prominent conservative and beneficiary of the Trump/McConnell Judge Confirmation Assembly Line would openly rebel over, well, nothing.
Yuval Levin of National Review takes us through election law. Timing is up to Congress and some tweaks might make sense for 2020 since we will have a surge of mail-in ballots to count:
But there may well be a way for Congress to help the election go more smoothly in those later two parts of the code I just cited above. The problem mail-in voting can create, especially in jurisdictions that aren’t used to so much of it, isn’t about fraud but about delays in counting and verifying results. So what may need to be adjusted is not the date of the election but the Electoral College deadlines that follow it.
I made a case for a reform like this (with Kevin Johnson of the Election Reformers Network) earlier this month in the Washington Post. As things now stand, election day is November 3, states need to finalize their results by December 8 to avoid their being challenged in Congress, and then members of the Electoral College are to meet on December 14. Congress certifies the results on January 6, and the winner is inaugurated January 20. That means that there are 78 days between the election and the inauguration, but states have only 35 of those days to finalize their results. As we’ve seen in some primaries this year, that simply may not be enough time in some contested states.
So rather than changing the election date, Congress should act to push back—just for this year—the date by which states have to finalize results and the date on which the electors meet. Pushing those back by two or three weeks could give contested states a lot more breathing room to deal with the actual challenges involved in mail-in voting while the election, certification, and inauguration would all go on as scheduled.
A mass mail vote means no chain of custody of the ballots and a host of other problems. Its like the tyrell corporation design fore replicants you cant fix it.

No more fucking games.
You show up. you vote. Reps from both parties escort the ballots to the counting location and supervise and scrutinize each ballot before it is entered.
No more hanging chads. No more vote harvesting. These are frauds that should never be tolerated.
Mexico requires ID and many countries dye the fingers of voters. We, on the other hand are inviting fraud. I wonder which party that might be? And the republican squishes say nothing and never challenge the Leftists.

We need to vote on election day. People with legitimate reasons should be able to request an absentee ballot which should then be locked up/signature checked by a verified poll worker on election night and then counted. PERIOD
Every other scenario is just an invitation for nefarious behavior.

I was never able to understand the paleontologist argument that an initial immigration some 14,000 years ago from Asia could allow for millions of people in South America, millions in Central America and millions in North America spread from Alaska to Florida and Maine in large quantities, by the time of Columbus, in such a relatively short time in a harsh environment.
Pushing that immigration back another 21,000 years and allowing for continued immigration makes more sense to me.

Jim nj and rich, yes it was about 15 months ago that I instigated a conversation that, I think Jim sunny was also in on where I talked up Graham Hancock after sitting through a two hr Joe Rogan interview and then went down to Seattle to see him. He’s always had a knack for blowing away all the hidebound curmudgeons and piece together fresh ideas which still get some acceptance from a few experts.
He argues comet not meteor with the best (broken up) strike in NW Greenland. He pushes man in NA waaay back and argues that the Amazon was heavily developed with their Australasian genetics. Lots more in that vein. With sea levels 400 ft lower we have almost no trace of those much earlier cultures and he did an earlier book even on that.
You can find all the books and other details on his website.

Rich @12:59 that’s the stuff that Hancock wrote about in Underworld.
His wife, Santha muttered that she considered it a doorstop. (She does all the photography for his books.)
Posted by: Manuel Transmission | July 31, 2020 at 02:09 AM
MT,
I remember that. I haven't read Graham Hancock. I did look him up though at the time you mentioned him. I haven't been influenced by him. I must have picked up what I believe on my own.
I see he has a new book,
http://grahamhancock.com/america-before/
I think my first foray into alternative explanations for accepted dogma was from an author who connected the volcanic explosion that destroyed the Minoan culture with the plagues of Egypt. It sounded logical to me, but he was pilloried for his belief. Was he wrong? Hard to tell, but everyone piled on anyway because it didn't fit with what they thought.
That was maybe 30-40 years ago. Sometime after that I heard the quote I love. "Science advances one funeral at a time."
Don't buck common wisdom with some new idea because the vested interests will stomp on you. Kind of like today's HCL fight.

This is good if you can ignore the obligatory Trump digs.
The reporter traveled to the site of riots and interviewed the locals. Lots of interviews and photos.
"While the most extreme riots in cities like New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, and particularly Minneapolis did receive considerable attention — however fleeting, incomplete, and unnecessarily inflected with knee-jerk partisanship — there were also smaller-scale riots in surprisingly far-flung places that you hardly would’ve known about unless you lived in the area, happened to visit, or intentionally sought out what remains of the bare-bones local media coverage.
To take just a small sampling: Atlantic City, NJ, Fort Wayne, IN, Green Bay, WI, and Olympia, WA all underwent significant riots, at least per the normal expectations of life in these relatively low-key cities. Did you hear anything about them? Because I hadn’t, and I’m abnormally attuned to daily media coverage. Only because I personally visited did I learn of the damage."
I hadn't heard of any of the smaller riots.

Exactly! Trump should stop threatening to postpone the election.
Just have a ballot sent to people in those states which do mail-in voting. (And have more states--preferably all the states--change to allow mail-in voting, but it's a state-by-state thing, not a presidential edict.) The voters won't have to stand in long lines and risk catching coronaviruses, a virus that has already killed more than 150,000, and the voting will be easy and convenient.
Then take enough time to count all the votes, and don't preemptively attack the results before they are counted!
Posted by: Colts | July 31, 2020 at 05:02 AM
My state does early voting. I don't want mail-in voting. The democrats are using the coronavirus to scare people into requesting it.
We have lived in this house 2 years and we STILL get mail for other people. In addition, our mail often doesn't come until 5 PM!
No mail-in voting. File for an absentee ballot if you don't want to vote in person.

What we’re seeing is clear.
This is a politically motivated party that won’t take “yes” for an answer.

The excuse I read on this from Schumer tonight is that the President and his staff don't know how serious the Coronavirus is.
The inference is either they are dim bulbs or Schumer knows the Chinese are going to send some more over here.
There are a lot of people who do not have any way to get money. Maybe they can all go to Schumer's house.

I was on a webinar yesterday and red came down to doublecheck as a friend from her previous employer didn't understand that since she was leasing her car to make it affordable, she actually did not 'own' it. Apparently she was also unaware of excess mileage provisions.
I told her how leases work and then told her last weekend I saw the most oversized trailer in terms of both width and length I had ever seen outside the canadian rockies and it was on a residential cutthrough parralleling peachtrre road. Realized it was for transporting vehicles about 2 days after moratorium expired. It was out at about 7:15 before most people are up.
She had another friend lose her job yesterday after overcommitting on a house about 2 years ago and already being told her roommates would not be renewing their leases. My point and hers is that so many people have gotten themselves into commitments they really did not understand or realize had a downside.

Mask kicked off sinuses which decided to drain into lungs making yesterday both a bad day and the first time in my life I made a ginger herb tea with fresh but now dried mountain mint from a farmers market, garlic chives, tian tian peppers, celery leaves.
Hubby pronounced it 'fragrant' with a note of sarcasm. I realized about 4 this morning I needed some good old fashioned chicken noodle soup today and that if I was going to use either chicken feet or turkey necks they needed to be roasted and put in while everyone else remained asleep.
Turkey necks it was. Decided to let it simmer for a couple of hours with a left over turkey carcass from the breast I roasted earlier in week. Take out chicken back bone in a few hours, add it, and then the rest of chicken for about an hour. Pull that and let it cool while all else simmers. Strip it and add all the skin, bones, etc back in.
Let it all simmer in oven at 275 until about 4 this afternoon when I will drain and add onions, celery, and carrots after chopping. Finish later with a can of diced tomatoes and noodles.
I plan to be better by tomorrow, just in time for the diva's return with the 2 kittens she was fostering during the lockdown as she leaves her college apartment and life behind.

James "Bring everything into the open. Reveal ALL the crimes and all the failures and all the lies. Let's have one big ugly reckoning."
When the decision was made in 2017 to sweep all the Obama-Clinton-Coup crimes under the rug #2weeks at a time, the fact that there are two systems of justice in the US was cemented in place, and the only small trick was stringing the rubes who thought otherwise along..
When the entire system of liberty, freedom, private property and free markets was swept aside in March 2020 by heretofore unimaginable rules, limits and regulations imposed by petty tyrants at all levels of government from POTUS down to Dog Catchers and those were hardly opposed by any elected leader and actually supported by SCOTUS, and when the end of July has arrived with ALL of those things still in place, then the illusion that we are free people protected by a constitution is revealed to be a fraud.
If something as heretofore unthinkable as a club of powerful old men screwing little girls in a vastly organized scheme protected by the government can be erased from history by simply running one man from the Whitehouse in three months after they hid everything else for four years, then who could be surprised that so much energy is behind making that happen.
That man is alone at his desk, nobody is helping him, and nobody fears him. He is reduced to seeing how much more free money he can borrow from our children to sprinkle on We The People Now to keep the circuses open.
And some think we will rise up like yesterday was Pearl Harbor and save our world as we thought it was? More people voted for Hillary Clinton than voted for Donald Trump. Nobody paid any price at all for crimes they committed to prevent Trump from winning anyway, so why should that change now?

Old Lurker,
Just because everything didn't get done in exactly the order you wanted doesn't give you license to trash the President.
You don't know who is going to be charged in this. Do you think that the President, knowing how vile these people are, would walk away from this leaving his children and grandchildren as sitting ducks? Do you think he's going to let thousands or even hundreds of thousands of people be killed?
Why are you here, spinning gloom and doom, anyway?

What does the Guillen stuff have to do with Epstein?

No idea why that came up twice.
Romney!! I will bet you he belongs in the same boat as Roberts!

Another Bob,
I think you are misspelling something, but give me an example to clarify.

“Why are you here, spinning gloom and doom, anyway?”
Well, this is a conversation among adults. Is that point of view not permitted?
OL’s opinion fits the facts.

You outdid even yourself there, MM.

But "who gave me license" to say something on a blog?
Seriously?

There has to be some thing behind Romney’s consistently antagonistic remarks — China and relatives, travel to the Caribbean, pizza.

His firm was in partnership with huawei qatari investors who knows.

Why thank you, Old Lurker!
I am paying attention to all of the happenings today. If you don't want to know about them, you (or anyone else for that matter) can ignore me.
There is no point in arguing. OL said his piece, and I said mine. We will see who is right.

I'll defend OL even though I don't agree with him.

Oh, the "license" thing. It's a phrase I picked up from my mother the English major, and both of my children are familiar with it, along with my older grandkids.
It creeps into my language without much significance other than its surface meaning.
Posted by: MissMarple2 | July 31, 2020 at 08:15 AM
sbwaters,
Do you suppose the Latter Day Saints had something to do with a fringe area of this, much as certain Catholic priests did?
Posted by: MissMarple2 | July 31, 2020 at 08:17 AM
I support blogger ID and licensing laws.

Was Al Gore worried about the "Global Warming" he was causing when he flew to Epstein's creep Island with underaged girls - as the newly released documents show?

I said I thought the Maxwell document dump amounted to old news. You mentioned this: “I am pretty sure I haven't seen that video of President Trump talking to the family of a female Army recruit before in the Oval Office.”
That was about Vanessa Guillen, right?
I’m wondering about the connection to Maxwell.

This is why my novella has had some bloody twists, petraeus gets his comeuppance and london finds out the yellowcake was real.

I understand Miss M's frustration with people putting down Trump's performance. I think he's been terrific, has improved the country (or, if you must, that it would be even worse if not for him). I think Trump is sincere with the American people, is doing his best, and has achieved a tremendous lot particularly when considering the lack of help he's gotten. I have great hopes for his second term, hopes which I don't think are unrealistic considering how able he's been so far.

The problem mail-in voting can create, especially in jurisdictions that aren’t used to so much of it, isn’t about fraud
With that, I quickly determined that this article was more NRO nonsense -- a level of gullibility and naivety fit for a 2 year old.

MM "It creeps into my language without much significance other than its surface meaning."
So you say but what you said is who gave me the right to say something that you don't like.
You fail to see how you are using the very same weapons the left has perfected and are using against us.
I won't stand that from them or from you either, so until this is your blog, I will continue to say what I think.
You know where the hush button is.
