When I got some bluetooth speakers, mainly for portability around my house and outside (Wifi speakers had to be plugged into an electric outlet), I was fine with them until a piano solo recording. After that is was finding a headphone output jack to connect to the receiver and run Spotify through the auxiliary input.

lyle

Admitting you’re wrong is different than demanding someone else do it.

You take that back, Lyle!

The real reason Young hates digital is because of his own control issues - he used to go into old-style record stores, find all the bootleg LPs he was on, and remove them from the store without paying. For him, the thought of missing out on proceeds from a sale was that terrifying.

Neil's not the only musician like that even in the Bandcamp era. It's really dumb in multiple ways particularly from a marketing point of view.

hrtshpdbox

I've never had any luck with wireless speakers.

"So, to my friends on the Left – and the #NeverTrumpers as well -- do I wish we lived in a time when our president could be “collegial” and “dignified” and “proper”? Of course I do. These aren’t those times. This is war. And it’s a war that the Left has been fighting without opposition for the past 50 years.

So, say anything you want about this president – I get it, he can be vulgar, he can be crude, he can be undignified at times. I don’t care. I can’t spare this man. He fights."

I think Springfield MA would be a great place for a Statuary Garden. If all this nonsense is to relocate alleged racist statues and such, then Springfield MA seems a logical choice considering how important this city was to the abolitionist movement.

Now John Brown wasn't born in Springfield but spent his formative years there.

Two years before Brown's arrival in Springfield, in 1844, the city's African-American abolitionists had founded the Sanford Street Free Church—now known as St. John's Congregational Church—which went on to become one of the United States' most prominent platforms for abolitionist speeches. From 1846 until he left Springfield in 1850, Brown was a parishioner at the Free Church, where he witnessed abolitionist lectures by the likes of Frederick Douglass and Sojourner Truth.[20] In 1847, after speaking at the Free Church, Douglass spent a night speaking with Brown, after which Douglass wrote, "From this night spent with John Brown in Springfield, Mass. 1847 while I continued to write and speak against slavery, I became all the same less hopeful for its peaceful abolition. My utterances became more and more tinged by the color of this man's strong impressions."[18] During Brown's time in Springfield, he became deeply involved in transforming the city into a major center of abolitionism, and one of the safest and most significant stops on the Underground Railroad.[21]

I have to say, I don't find President Trump particularly vulgar, crude, or undignified. Maybe it's because I grew up around my dad, who worked in construction and had served in the Army for 5 years during the lead-up and length of WWII.

What I do find him is exceptionally strong in will and endurance, especially for a man 2 years older than I am, and one who is willing to sacrifice a lot for the country he loves.

I do think, though, that vinyl sounds different, and I'm pretty sure I'm not imagining things.

Vinyl has its own sound due to characteristics of the medium and playing devices. I think some people, maybe not all, get conditioned to that being true audio fidelity.

Surface noise on vinyl used to drive me up the wall and I couldn't wait for something like CDs. That said, records made on really good pressings of high quality vinyl sound great.

Yes, I think I did comment about Pono on JOM.

When I was dabbling in the audiophile stuff, Gerry, the guy who was the money bags behind the operation was approached by Neil for funding. Gerry didn’t get involved as he was already creating a small fortune by spending a large one.

I do think the lossless digital formats are noticeably better than MP3, but only when the playback system has an appropriate DAC and downstream analog circuitry. Typical computer or phone often don’t cut the mustard.

Analog is still the best, no matter how you cut the cake. High end vinyl is awesome, but the holy grail is mag tape at 15 inches/second.

Try finding recordings. Last I heard, approximately $500 per song.

Can you say wretched excess? But then if you have a couple million invested in a sound system, “mine is bigger than yours” is the game:)

A 45's collector can't be a purist about sound quality. I already use a spherical stylus, for the wider grooves on the older records, instead of an elliptical - that alone must be an enormous audiophile faux pas. I must admit to having a very used and abused original "six-eyes" Columbia "Kind of Blue" by Miles LP that I listen to all the time. Occasional pop and all, it still plays great 60 years on.

I swore off listening to it years ago. Everybody over a certain age has it in their collection no matter what their tastes. One time in NYC when I visited the parents of one of my daughter's roommates they played a Don Pullen disc and I thanked them for playing something other than KOB. I readily admit it's a classic recording although what puts it above Giant Steps or Mingus's Ah Um has never been explained to me.

You know that it was recorded at the wrong tape speed, right? Evans discovered that; Miles had said multiple times he never listens to his recordings and Coltrane was following his own muse by then.

Buckeye

I certainly understand and agree conceptually but can your ears tell the difference? Mine can't but if you say yours can I'll take your word on it. You've surely listened to higher end speakers than I have.

I think you would be able to differentiate between sources, but only with everything else in the chain with commensurate capabilities. And music you really know.

I wouldn’t have believed it before I experienced it, but even things like how clean the AC power is can have a impact on sound quality.

In a Silent Way's a very good record.

Buckeye

Hrtshpdbox

Some of the same record producing outfits that specialize in high quality vinyl also do the 15 inch/sec tapes.

They are actually recorded at that speed, and obviously you have to have a deck that will playback at 15 inch/sec as well.

Obviously a huge pain in the ass, so that explains the cost.

It is a very small, obscure market. Almost all “word of mouth”.

hrtshpdbox

Thanks, CH, now I have to dig mine up to read its deadwax. :-)

Doesn't surprise me that Miles didn't listen to his own records; then again, if he had, I don't think he'd pull the slightly speedy pressing.

She's on the first floor,so we can talk to her thru her window. She said that there hasn't been a Covid case at her facility,so she's not sure what prompted the new rule. She said they had some excitement the other night, because the police removed a male resident from the facility. Of course, the answer is that DC is specified as a non-state in the Constitution.

But it makes me wonder.
Former Gov Walker of WI did such a terrific job of freeing gov't workers from being FORCED to join a pro-Dem union.

Why are there no Repub lawmakers willing to write a bill saying:
1) Any gov't employee may join a union
2) Gov't employee unions may work with the gov't on setting work rules, etc.
3) Any gov't employee can donate his own money to any political group
4) Gov't employee unions may NOT contribute to political causes because the money is taken from worker who are directly paid with tax money.

Don't think so. You claimed that Sessions was a key ingredient in taking down the deep state and DJT was in his corner 100% despite his recusal. That last statement is obviously not true and the first one's on a shaky foundation.

Ultimately I wanted for Sessions to be vindicated but that hasn't happened as Trump is openly campaigning for his primary opponent. I don't know how more obvious it could be that DJT wasn't pleased with his performance as Attorney General. It was and is a huge job and being in that den of dawdlers called the US Senate for a long time wasn't the best job training.

Any of youse geniuses ever set up a grandfather clock? I got one on a steal yesterday but there's one hitch: the clockworks and everything have to be installed into the case. I'm sure I can play someone to do it, but it dimishes the "steal" aspect of the deal.

He is fast, a right footer from the right wing. My right winger in H.S. and COLLEGE was the guy who made me a scorer.
