Broad concensus on masks? Yeah--that they are next to useless in public

https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMp2006372?query=recirc_mostViewed_railB_article

Second paragraph:
We know that wearing a mask outside health care facilities offers little, if any, protection from infection. Public health authorities define a significant exposure to Covid-19 as face-to-face contact within 6 feet with a patient with symptomatic Covid-19 that is sustained for at least a few minutes (and some say more than 10 minutes or even 30 minutes). The chance of catching Covid-19 from a passing interaction in a public space is therefore minimal. In many cases, the desire for widespread masking is a reflexive reaction to anxiety over the pandemic.

MissMarple2

anonamom,

My friend whose grandchildren are in California says that Newsom does NOTHING but issue edicts which have her oldest granddaughter (a bright 6-year old) obsessing over the virus and worrying about it constantly, even though she isn't allowed much television viewing.

The reason is that from day to day there are rules the child is told they have to follow, the little girl across the street isn't allowed out of her house to play with her, she knows that older people are more at risk so she worries about her grandparents, etc. etc. PLUS she wasn't allowed to start school this August!

My friend is fit to be tied. She hopes Newsome is recalled, impeached, whatever.

MM, a good friend's 14 year old daughter had some orthodonture work done on Tuesday morning and spiked a fever that afternoon. She (the teen) freaked out with a full-blown panic attack about having COVID and unknowingly infecting others, which my friend didn't help by also freaking out and dragging the entire family to get tested, despite no other symptoms for anyone.

They are waiting for the results, teen's temperature is now normal, and my friend is lamenting that kids shouldn't feel burdened by their fear for others. Who created that burden?

MissMarple2

Robin,

From the American Greatness piece MM just linked:

It takes courage to resist the prevailing mood of any time, and the mood of this time is one of racialized hysteria and ritual shame, of moral lassitude, tending towards national suicide. Those who dare to contradict the spirit of deranged cruelty that animates the soul of the Left or the cowed silence of the majority on the Right can expect swift punishment from a vicious and unforgiving mob. A climate of fear and submission has made public enemies out of private citizens, prison guards and sentries out of neighbors, and villains out of America’s heroes.

We need a mob twice a big and twice as ruthless, or we are going to lose.

Sorry, but that is how shit works.

James D.

Somehow, within our national identity and coda, we have to excise this cancer without damaging our honor or our principles.

I don't think that's possible. When the other side no longer considers you human, you can either keep to your principles and lose to them and hope you get your reward in the next life; or do whatever is necessary to defeat them no matter how awful and hope that God will forgive you.

You can't fight cleanly and win against monsters, though.

TaxProf source:

Enrollment of new international students at U.S. universities in the fall semester of the 2020-2021 academic year is projected to decline 63 to 98 percent from 2018-2019 levels, according to a National Foundation for American Policy analysis. An update and then I am heading back to bed. I contracted covid. My respiratory system is doing ok, but I occasionally need Albuterol so I can take nice deep breaths. I am pounding the vitamin c and d with plenty of water. My body is sore all over and my temperature has been mostly unregulated since last Thursday. The doc has me on a regimen of Tylenol and ibuprofen that seems to have started to calm things down. I’ve also been cramming down the Mucinex as well as lemon water which seems to keep the mung from building up.

My biggest concern is that I was in semi close contact with my elderly neighbor on the 4th. My symptoms showed up on the 7th. He has a rare form of cancer that requires daily chemo pills. Right now San Diego county is getting overrun with covid coming from south of the border and tests are running low, so most places are not testing someone who doesn’t have symptoms. In one week he will have made it through the 14 day danger zone(assuming it really is 14 days) but I really think he should get tested. Maybe his oncologist will have some pull.

Love to all of you.

Libtards seem to line up together on practically every issue--economic, social, national security, foreign policy, you name it. I've often wondered why that is. It's like there's a gene mutation. I think it's mainly a reliance on emotion rather than rational thinking.

Re KungFlu I have a talk on this that I've given once to an UWS group, and will give again at my university in a couple weeks. It covers things like the statistical value of a life, what that implies about costs and benefits of lockdowns, comparing risks that people routinely take with those of KungFlu. There's no rational basis for all the fear and lockdowns, needless to say. Or alternatively, we should be permanently locked down because of all the one in a million risks that we face by doing things like getting in a car.

This. So much this.

And when you confront them with facts, gently and with regard to their delicate sensibilities, they cannot deal with it and change the conversation or just restate how terrified they are FOR OTHERS. It's always been a bit crazy, but COVID has really made the divide stark. It is simply impossible to see them as rational adults who are voting for our collective future.

Really, we are going to have to kick their asses at the ballot box.

Robin, eff 'em all

rse

So sorry TK. Listen to a'mom.

When hubby spiked a fever about a month ago and had to get tested you can bet I had him taking zinc daily. Made dinosaur kale soup last week and then black eyed pea and collard green soup monday. Nutritious food matters!

On the question about the children and their fear, one of the concepts that has been drilled into them like a mantra and quite deliberately is Interdependence. The pandemic triggers that.

I did my walk this am and was thinking about cathy f's analysis along with the fear in the eyes of two different children in two families last weekend when I went to an outdoor farmers market. The children had on masks and I think the fact that they had children's characters on them made them worse than black or paper.

Irrational fear is being inculcated in these children and having schools remain online for 1st 9 weeks of the year will mean more than 6 months away. It's a lifetime for small kids and for them to be fearful much of it is so tragic. Primes them to look for the next threat they need to be protected from.

Probably why so much gaming has gone on in recent years around Grand Challenges like Climate Change and pandemics that become embedded in virtual reality curricula and also in so-called e-textbooks. Most are not replicating that print copy on the shelf but allow for immersive experiential learning.

Proving that the Academy will police its strays, this follows A-mom's NEJM link above about the silliness, except for signalling compliance, of masks in public:

"To the Editor:

We understand that some people are citing our Perspective article (published on April 1 at NEJM.org)1 as support for discrediting widespread masking. In truth, the intent of our article was to push for more masking, not less. It is apparent that many people with SARS-CoV-2 infection are asymptomatic or presymptomatic yet highly contagious and that these people account for a substantial fraction of all transmissions.2,3 Universal masking helps to prevent such people from spreading virus-laden secretions, whether they recognize that they are infected or not.4

We did state in the article that “wearing a mask outside health care facilities offers little, if any, protection from infection,” but as the rest of the paragraph makes clear, we intended this statement to apply to passing encounters in public spaces, not sustained interactions within closed environments. A growing body of research shows that the risk of SARS-CoV-2 transmission is strongly correlated with the duration and intensity of contact: the risk of transmission among household members can be as high as 40%, whereas the risk of transmission from less intense and less sustained encounters is below 5%.5-7 This finding is also borne out by recent research associating mask wearing with less transmission of SARS-CoV-2, particularly in closed settings.8 We therefore strongly support the calls of public health agencies for all people to wear masks when circumstances compel them to be within 6 ft of others for sustained periods.

I think the Fed augments that data with inputs of their own,

BEA and Census are both under the Commerce Dept, BLS is Labor Dept, and those are the big three for economic data. BEA does mainly national accounts (GDP, etc.), BLS does employment stuff and (for some reason) the CPI. Census does wholesale/retail trade, housing, construction.
