Dr. Fauci might want to work on his bedside manner:
Fauci: COVID-19 is "almost your worst nightmare"
Oy. Can we go back to being told that one day it will just disappear, as if by magic?
His rationale:
"It's the perfect storm," Fauci says. "We often talk about outbreaks and pandemics, be they influenza or other pathogens, that have to have a few characteristics that make them particularly formidable. Well, this particular virus has that."
- For a public health official, this is "almost your worst nightmare," Fauci adds.
- He points out that SARS-CoV-2 jumps species, is a new pathogen with no known innate human immunity, and is a respiratory-borne virus that is "spectacularly efficient" at spreading from human to human and has a "substantial degree of morbidity and mortality, particularly in certain populations of people."
Plus, "the spectrum of involvement with the same pathogen is very unique," Fauci says.
- "I've never seen an infection in which you have such a broad range — of literally nothing, namely no symptoms at all, in a substantial proportion of the population; to some who get ill with minor symptoms; to some who get ill enough to be in bed for weeks and have post-viral syndromes; [to] others [who] get hospitalized, require oxygen, intensive care, ventilation and death."
The broad range of symptoms, from "none" to prolonged shortness of breath and then death, is weird. But my worst nightmare would include a bug like the Spanish flu of 1918/19, which had a special affinity for working-age people.
Not to be cold, but COVID is providing a bit of relief to Social Security and Medicare on the liability side (the absence of payroll and hence, payroll taxes, is a bit of a negative. Just a speedbump!). The Spanish flu would have buried them.
When is Dr Fauci going to get a bag over his head and driven away in an unmarked van?

--Not to be cold, but COVID is providing a bit of relief to Social Security and Medicare on the liability side...--
Since even Neil Ferguson admits ~70% of the dead weren't going to make it to the end of the year regardless, "a bit" is correct, if not excessive.
40-50 million not paying in for even a few months however is quite a bit more than a bit.

Hey rocco, quick question about jail/prison culture.
Used to be prisoners guilty of crimes against children would have a hard time from fellow inmates (and maybe steff?).
How about this clown:

Ann Taylor, Loft, Justice, Lane Bryant, all of which have the same parent company, filing for bankruptcy, with many stores to close. There was a time when my wife shopped at AT and Loft quite often because their clothes fit her well.

My son may very well not be going back to college this fall. He was in the process of transferring from UVA to Boston College. However, he doesn't feel like it is worth it to go to college if all of his classes are going to be online, and if student interaction and socializing are going to be hampered by all the ridiculous rules. Can't say I blame him. In other words, he's taking an involuntary gap year. Really a shame. He's been a good student, but the college experience has not been very pleasant for him at all.
Posted by: peter | July 23, 2020 at 06:09 PM
I quit shopping at Lane Bryant when they went all “skinny” suits. Wait a minute, that was Brooks Bros, sorry.

The same for my daughter. She's going to try to rent an apartment with friends and get a job or internship somewhere. My hope is that companies recognize the opportunity of a slew of students taking a year off and create positions, as they do in the summer, but we'll see. We're very pissed off at these universities all caving to the panic.

And the son (who you knew Rocco right?) was in prison 2 years longer for no reason.
Martha Coakley, who lost to Scotty Centerfold, dragged her disgusting wrinkled ossified ass as long as possible before springing him. I'd like to think that was the deciding factor in the race although she was a loathsome candidate in just about every other way.

I couldn't relate to all the Brooks Brothers talk, but it hearkened me back to a nice night-time winter walk past all the beautiful Christmas window displays in the big name stores near Central Park, NYC.
I decided to check out Barney's. I'd always heard of it as a high-end place. Didn't know anything more about it.
Men's dept. was 3rd floor, so we took an elevator. The first thing I see when the doors opened was a mannequin with a pink plaid sport jacket. A clearly gay man asked if he could help and I asked for the leather jacket section, since I could have been open to buying a nice leather jacket.
The first one I tried on, totally gay, was priced at $3,000.
We spent a few more minutes taking in the once-in-a-lifetime scene and left.

Peter,
A gap year can be a great thing. I took one at CU to get my residency and lower tuition. No one thought I’d go back. One big ship of fools. It’s very good to be in the world, work for a living and grow up a little at that age.

Well Fauci is well past his sell by date. Can't keep his stories straight. And as for the governors--Cuomo, Newsom, Whitmer et al, there's not a nickel's worth of value in any of them.
That said--my wife and I both turn 77 this year--and we look at the modal distribution of deaths from the "KungFlu" in our community--so we stay cautious and mostly isolated.
But it's an interesting virus-and since it's seemingly only been around since late last year (in humans at least) there's a lot left to learn about it. It's hard to tell how lethal it's been in the USA since so many cases are asympomatic. But I've seen figures that lethality is as low as 0.5% which would make it just a bit more lethal than "regular" flu that shows up each year. But it's apparently also very very contagious. I'm not certain that people know just how it spreads--face masks of course are one thing---but do we need to be disinfecting every surface that anybody touched? And we haven't had the time to learn what happens down the road (sequelae) to a Wuhan Virus infection where the patient recovers.
As Donald Rumsfeld---and Dick Cheney, both voted in as Darth Vader or the Devil by progressives said, it's the unknown unknowns that will get you. And right now there are plenty of unknown unknowns where the Wuhan Virus is concerned.

Dems are joyous that Trump can't do rallies or even have the Jacksonville convention. This is a show of weakness on their part.
Unlike them, we wish the Dems would have a convention. COVID is a good excuse for avoiding the pandemonium they know would happen.
I think they're about to experience an epic ass-kicking.

CH, we call her Marsha Coakley here in Mass. Ted Kennedy’s son called her Marsha, and Howie Carr ran with it. Charlie Parker started with Biden calling him that. What’s the deal with these dems where they can’t get a name correct? Well they don’t get much right, but they sure know how to win around here. Sigh
After getting out and working and such I am sorry I had the poor me thing going this am. All is good and I count my blessings every day. Sorry about that!
Hair cut was great. My stylist told me a woman was telling her she was racist because she is white and what she needs to do (pretty bold considering the person has sharp scissors and one’s hair in her hands). Anyway my stylist said she replied, “You are talking about you right, not me?” Anyway they argued while she was cutting her hair! Must have been quite a scene. Very proud of stylist as she told her to read Thomas Sowell.
I was confronted by a customer while at the post office. He told me he felt unsafe in my store because some customers weren’t wearing masks, and there “were a lot of people in the store.” Thank God I had a bandana over most of my face because I am sure I swore under my breath. I told my brother and he said, “Then don’t come the fuck in!” It never seems to end.
Glad people are feeling better.

Peter and Jimmy K, as you have probs read here we are in the same boat. Son, at my urging, decided to stay with the online classes. He will be a senior and college has been for lack of a better phrase, “not very college like.” I suggested he finish up and then move on with his life. Youngest is told she can’t be on campus, but likely will be next semester as she will begin nursing clinicals. It’s all such an incredible overreaction. This age group is so low risk.
CV and wife, I would be doing the same as you if I was your age. That makes sense. The school and college thing is a complete shit show. I hope these colleges get defunded and everything else. I also think they are awful to lay off the custodians and such and not take a pay cut at the top. Shame on them.

Jane, I don’t think so. I just got caught up bitchin about the dem royalty around here! Kennedys always in the paper and news. Then MV was summer for the Clintons. Then Obama, and then they bought the waterfront estate since he stopped the rising tides. It’s so easy to go off an a tangent about these crooks.
Related, but just a story a customer told me. (Hope I haven’t already told this story). This was back a bit - whenever the riots were happening in Boston. That’s when he told me this had happened. He has an auto supply shop on MV, and he told me that after the Kavanaugh mess he was talking about it with some of the guys in the store, and that he was pissed about what the left did. He says that a man was in the store and he asked to speak to him outside. He gave him his business card and asked if he knew who he was. My customer said yes, and says the man told him he better shut up about Kavanaugh or he would have a mob outside of his business in no time flat. Says is was Sid Blumenthol. He said after that he got a gun and taught his wife how to use another one. True? I think so. Crazy story.

Porch, glad all is okay. My sister in law’s father had a uti and was a mess. He is 90 and also caught covid but never was hospitalized. The uti might have been worse. Now he just sleeps a lot. Poor guy.

Clarifying. He told me the story back when the riots were going on. This happened after the Kavanaugh hearings. Was that last October?

Thanks, ccgirl.
Wow, that is a tough one-two punch for your SIL's dad. I hear that UTIs apparently can really be sneaky with older men. Apparently my dad's was significant but he had no idea.

Caught the latest Biden commercial with the sound off.
It looked like an ad for black masks.

jimmy k, have your wife listen to Joe Rogan's podcast with James Lindsay, who does a fabulous takedown of White Fragility.

Teh Fouch threw the worst first pitch I've ever seen, but at least this didn't happen.

He looked manlier doing it than Big Mike's hubby, though.

Porch, your dad sounds like he has a UTI.
I am sure they'll take a look at his urine.

Can’t keep track of all the nuttiness on the timeline lately. Seems to be fast and furious lately.
Yes it was tough, but it was early on in March. When we saw that a 90 year old was dealing with it at home we lost our fear of it. That’s also why I think I may have had it and was asymptotic.
Having said that, it is an unpredictable and unusual virus. Certainly one must stay ahead of the symptoms and take great care if needed.

My first post here was about the slithery sid vicious, and his association with cuban regime agent phil agee, he pretended the latter was some kind of dissident. They collaborated on a thin volume of jfk conspiracy tales called govt by gunplay.
