Good Morning. Hubby just got off the phone with one of the partners of his former company. He was told that a client of the office, who hubby has known for years, went to the hospital in northern Maine for a routine procedure. He had a Covid test. Just as he was being prepped, the nurse walked in,dressed in full PPE. He had tested positive. The full CDC rules were put into place. He was told to quarantine and inform all the people he had been in contact with. Family, friends, neighbors and golf buddies. Later that day the hospital called. Sorry! The lab made a mistake, you are negative for Covid. Well, this man doesn't deal with BS. He walked into the office of the hospital CEO (small town!) and told him that he and/or his insurance company would not be paying the bill. In fact, don't even bother sending a bill.
This incident is probably being repeated all the country,in hospitals large and small.

I think the point of the argument is that teachers complain that their salary is not high enough and others point out that if they want more pay they should take a job with two weeks vacation not two or three months. Current ones perhaps. But how about the presumably thousands of criminals convicted under state law in these territories? Typical federal statue of limitations is five years. How do possibly thousands of even violent offenders not petition for their immediate release and are free from prosecution because of SOL issues?

asw

Ignatz I may be confused too but when I was teaching it was clear to me that the salary/per year was paid over 12 months rather than the 9-10 I actually went to the school building. When I chaired finance for a tony girls' school in DC, the incessant "we love our teachers and have to pay them more, more and more, especially since public schools in the DC area pay so much more.

OL being OL even then came to the next board meeting with charts for how much our teachers were paid per child per day, and then total pay per hour actually teaching children. Then I asked why, if things were so unfair, none of them ever ever left?

Turns out they were paid more calculated per unit of production than many of the parents who paying the tuitions.

The Infamous Ignatz

I'm not making any judgment on teachers. I know a few and it's not a job I could do without very quickly being led off to the state pen in shackles.
I don't even know if they're eligible for unemployment during the summer furlough [assuming they're not doing year round school]. I assume not. But I think a lot of people working mid to low level jobs who are lucky to get a couple of weeks off [especially the ones who hate their jobs] consider teacher salaries not so bad when measured against time off, or time served if you teach young thugs like one friend does.
I'm still not clear on how twelve pay periods or ten somewhat larger pay periods factors into anything. The pay is for the job done for that year and it would presumably be about the same were it paid out in one lump sum or in 26 biweekly paychecks.

Melinda

Stephanie,

Exactly right. My father, after selling his furnace business, went to work for the school system my mother and her parents taught in, as head of their maintenance department.

Several male teachers worked for him in the summer for extra money, doing painting, roofing, gutter cleaning, and other odd jobs. A couple were shop teachers so they knew woodworking and skills like that.

Some of the women teachers worked for department stores or did babysitting in the summer.

This was back in the 60's so I haven't kept up. My sister the teacher taught at a parochial school, and my close high school friends went into professions other than teaching, so I didn't know for sure.

They are also the original virtue signalers as they claim to be 'for the children' yet their unions are 'for the establishment.' They claim oppression since they are in a 'noble' field, yet are not paid commensurate to what they believe they are entitled to.

Many years ago, no education diploma was needed to teach math, science and history and schools actively recruited teachers with those majors to teach the subjects with KNOWLEDGE of what they were teaching. They banned that so that only indoctrinated education majors (who can't do math, science or know much about history) could be steeped in Marxist ideology before setting foot in the classroom. My college roommate couldn't even do fractions, but she managed to get a Master's of Ed and teach for years. IIRC she didn't even score a 700 on her admittance SATs, but she aced the education curriculum. Nuff said.

My BiL Jimmy retired from the Philadelphia school district many years ago, completely torqued at its massive corruption, politicization and incompetence.

Every summer he would drive down to Cape May and bartend all summer to help put his kids through college. Teachers don't have it easy, nor do they have it hard. It's a mixed bag. I don't think most people get into it for the money.

But the corruption of the system on a national basis has to stop. It is the administrators and the leadership who make the decisions. Teachers just want to, for the most part, teach.

The Infamous Ignatz

Betsy McCaughey who is normally pretty sharp says Wuflu is widely spread by airborne transmission and
Don’t fear a coronavirus spike — wear your mask and watch the real measures

Masks are essential. Even Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has come around, advising Texans to wear masks when they have to go out. A mask prevents the aerosol droplets emitted when you talk or cough from reaching everyone else.

Bandanas make a fashion statement but don’t protect the wearer. A cotton bandana is only 2 to 3 percent effective in blocking incoming viral droplets. A flat surgical mask blocks out about 56 percent of viral droplets. The molded N95 mask, which is hard to get, filters out 95 percent of viral particles.

That still doesn't answer the question whether surgical masks in the real world do anything or not.
Nor does it answer the question of, if this bug is ubiquitous like the common cold, what the point of trying not to get it is if one isn't in a high risk group.
I don't want to get the flu. My strategy is to not lick anyone who has flu-like symptoms, rather than put on a diving bell and dip my hands in lye.
So far it's worked pretty well.

Jane

Well my real bitch with teachers are they are union liberal asses. They don't think kids to think for themselves, but rather to mimic lefties. It's such a mean thing to do to kids!

Old Lurker

asw

CH "The good ones would probably work for free for the gratification of seeing the light go on."

Those are called mothers who are homeschooling their own children now. Back in the day they were mothers who were able to be home with their children during the summer adding immeasurably to the lives and learning of their children.

I know I am old and old fashioned but anyone who thinks their children are getting the same real education and benefits that their mother is able to give them by sending them to a tony private school instead of having mom available 24/7 is mistaken.

It used to be said that the hand that rocks the cradle, rules the world. Look at the mess we are in now that that hand has given up rocking the cradle and is trying to rule the world directly.

The Infamous Ignatz

Teacher unions are horrible prog outfits. The public school system, especially the urban variety is a disaster.
But the large majority of the teachers I've known, admittedly in a bucolic, conservative rural setting have been conscientious and decent people.
If you want to get rid of teachers' unions and the terrible school system there is only one real solution;
abolish public schools.

Rocco

Why should it? They are still getting paid to do NOTHING. What about that does the union or the Marxist teachers object to? And a lot of the idiot parents I see on the neighborhood/school FB pages are falling all over themselves to suggest more pay to compensate as 'hazard' pay for in person teaching due to WuFlu.

Dare to mention that their precious darlings are more likely to suffer an issue with their mandatory vaccinations than from getting WuFlu and just dayum they go berzerk.

Approximately 500 kids die a year from vaccine complications and what 20? so far from WuFlu. These people are insane.

What exposure do they think a teacher at a whiteboard 10 feet in front of the kids is at risk for? They are outside the mandatory 6 foot 'social distancing' CDC requirement. Add a mask and whoops... risk mitigated. It's not like the SJW are all for hugs and closeness in the classroom as that is sexual harassment anyway, so the teachers are not going to be substantially at more risk.

Jim,SunnyvaleCA,USA

Remember this inconvenient fact when University lawyers try to argue that the ONLY reason foreign students are being bounced for online classes is because Trump is mean. And vindictive.

Via InstaPundit:

ONCE AGAIN, THE MEDIA IS LYING: I’ve seen countless stories about ICE’s “new” student visa requirement barring student visas for students who would be taking only online classes. The idea that this is “new” is false. Foreign students are required to take a “full course of study” to fulfill visa requirements. The longstanding rule is that a study may take only one online class per semester as part of the full course of study. ICE *may* allow a student to take more than one online course, but any additional course must be taken in the physical presence of a university instructor. Here is the DHS webpage from 2012, in the Obama years:

An F-1 student may only count one online or distance education course without the physical oversight of a school employee (or the equivalent of three credits) toward a full-course of study per academic term. F-1 students may be eligible to take more than one online class to maintain their status as long as the class is physically proctored or monitored by a school employee.

ICE waived the rule for the Spring and Summer 2020 semesters due the Covid emergency. Given that Congress has now had four months to address the issue but has not, it’s not clear what the “emergency” would be that would allow ICE to ignore a binding regulation.

In any event, given that the regulation is clear that foreign students may not stay in the U.S. on student visas if they are taking online only classes, and given that universities knew they may have to go all online this Fall, why are so many university “leaders” acting like the government actually enforcing the rule once the immediate emergency has passed is a complete surprise?

lyle

Here you go, rse:

They’re not even trying to hide this anymore. Black Lives Matter co-founder Patrice Cullors repeatedly says “We are trained Marxists.” Antifa’s imagery, dogma, public statements — all straight from the Marxist playbook. The bleatings of the Democrat Socialist crowd, including AOC, Ilhan Omar, Ayanna Pressley and the rest — unabashedly Marxist. What do you think every one of these “community organizing” outfits catching oversized checks from the Soroses of the world are teaching to their new recruits? Where do you think critical race theory, repressive tolerance, and intersectionalism, the tools of the cultural revolutionaries setting fire to all our traditions and institutions, came from? They came from the Frankfurt School, all of whom were Marxists.

This playbook was written long ago. If you think that Bernie Sanders or Kshama Sawant or Alicia Garza are smart enough to dream up a plan for taking down the greatest society the world has ever known, you are out of touch with reality. The only way they could have been as effective as they have so far is to follow somebody else’s plan. Which they are doing.

The reason you believe a Marxist revolution on these shores is far-fetched is that your faith in America’s institutions makes you believe the loss of your freedom and prosperity are impossible.

That confidence isn’t a flaw in your character. To the contrary, it’s a sign of your patriotism. But this moment makes that confidence unwarranted, if not obsolete.

Joe Biden is telling you that if he wins in November he will “transform” America. He’s telling you that he will institute massive, crushing tax increases. He’s talking about getting the Post Office into the banking business (not just putting the Post Office in charge of ballot security, banking as well), while his fellow Democrats are talking about creating a cashless society — the combination of which will effectively eliminate private finance and the cash economy, meaning no escape from the tender mercies of the IRS and government regulators who will then be able to audit and analyze all of your financial transactions.

lyle

More:

Bezmenov didn’t dream that up. It wasn’t even a secret. Nikita Khrushchev, who ran the Soviet Union from 1958 to 1964, was quite open in predicting the destruction of the United States and furthermore said it would happen in the way that every society eventually collapses — internally.

“We will take America without firing a shot,” Khrushchev said. “We do not have to invade the U.S. We will destroy you from within.”

Khrushchev and the Soviets weren’t just bragging. What he was talking about was an entire system of Marxist indoctrination and takeover they had perfected and executed in country after country during the 20th century. Eastern Europe. North Korea. North Vietnam, then all of Vietnam. Cuba. Nicaragua. Later, Venezuela. Various African countries, including South Africa, the communist bloom of which has only recently come to pass. Some of those countries went communist because the Soviets rolled the tanks in; most went communist because the pre-communist society collapsed for various reasons. All went communist after they had been infiltrated with Marxist revolutionaries.

The point being that there was a template in place for how to penetrate a society with Marxist ideals and implode it so that the revolutionaries would control the ruins. Bezmenov, whose father was a high-ranking Soviet military official and who was trained to be an elite KGB overseas operative, was taught the template and put to work in India attempting to infiltrate that country and bring it into the Warsaw Pact. He also worked at the Soviet RIA Novosti news organization, editing and planting propaganda materials into foreign media. The man knew exactly what he was talking about when he outlined how a Marxist revolution might be America down without firing a shot, just as Khrushchev had predicted.

It’s even worse than that, because the cultural Marxist project not just in our schools but in our media and entertainment institutions has poisoned those against the country. Remember when the NFL was an escape from politics? Remember when the movies Hollywood made extolled American values and made viewers feel good about their country?

When was the last time you saw anything from American education or corporate media that made you feel good about your country?

The first goal of revolutionary propaganda, particularly the Marxist variety, is to demoralize. It’s to depress you and make you believe your civilization is lost. Once you succumb to that, you are, in the words of Ming the Merciless, “satisfied with less.” Why do you think ordinary white people are so willing to apologize for the sins of their ancestors and to confess to being racist without even knowing it? Why do you think corporate America is blindly endorsing a Marxist revolutionary organization that openly declares war on the nuclear family?

That’s demoralization, and according to Bezmenov it’s the first step in engineered societal collapse.

Bezmenov describes that as a rapid decline in the structure of a society — its economy, its military, its international relations. We’ve discussed in this space the unquestionable impetus on the part of Democrats to keep the economy as hamstrung as possible with COVID-19 shutdowns, and those continue despite a precipitous decline in death rates as testing ramps up across the country. It’s clear the virus is no longer a significant threat to the health of Americans who don’t already have serious medical issues, and yet COVID hysteria is increasing, rather than decreasing. Just Wednesday the Ivy League shut down all its sporting events planned for the fall semester, an absurd decision that is nonetheless likely to be copied by other universities dominated by leftist political activists (the Big Ten, ACC, and SEC are all in various stages of planning conference-only schedules this fall, which makes no sense whatsoever). The virus is the perfect platform by which to impose the economic destabilization the Left has wanted all along.

No, that isn’t a conspiracy theory. They’re telling you it’s what they’re after. Do you believe Ilhan Omar was off-script when she suggested dismantling America’s economy as a system of oppression earlier this week? Ilhan Omar, who paid a political consultant $900,000 in fees last year, money that came from somewhere, isn’t smart enough to say these things without having the script written for her. She’s being trotted out to introduce them because she’s already radioactive and a lightning rod for criticism, and also because she’s (1) black, (2) Muslim, and (3) an immigrant, and even an illegal one. To criticize her statements as cracked bears the signature not of incisive reasoning but rather racism. So when other Democrats join her call you are no longer allowed to object.

Google Omar’s statements and what you’ll find is a loud cacophony of gaslighting by left-wing media outlets like Common Dreams, The Nation, the Washington Post, and others attacking Republicans for reacting to what they saw and heard on video as “meltdowns” and “losing their minds.” Even Snopes, the left-wing site purportedly acting as a fact-check operation, declares that Omar didn’t actually say what she said.

That’s destabilization. They’re fully engaged in it, whether you believe they’ve been successful or not.

The Infamous Ignatz

Taiwan has ~24 million people crammed mostly onto one third of the island which makes it very crowded.
It never required masks on people out of doors or even on public transportation.
They had their first case January 21st, same as us.
They only banned flights from Wuhan at first, not all of Chain. It wasn't until mid March they banned foreign nationals from coming in.
They've had ~450 cases and seven deaths.
Why?
There's a whole lot about this bug that doesn't make much sense.

The third stage is crisis, the catalyzing event that builds on the first two stages to bring on the change the revolutionaries are looking for. Looking for a crisis? Take your pick. We barely even remember the fact that we just had only the third presidential impeachment in American history half a year ago, a constitutional crisis that was wholly and completely manufactured directly out of thin air. We progressed immediately from that to COVID-19, which was unquestionably a manufactured crisis — not that the virus itself isn’t deadly to a certain portion of the population, but if you think the panic and destruction it’s caused doesn’t smack of manufacture then it’s clear you’ve been demoralized.

And then the George Floyd riots and the paroxysms of violence and virtue-signaling those have brought on, complete with the current campaign to bowdlerize American history and culture in an increasingly indiscriminate fashion. That’s a crisis, everybody, and it’s a completely manufactured one. The speed of the cultural collapse that followed Floyd’s death — when the legal system moved very swiftly against the police officers responsible for it — makes it undeniable this was planned and only needed a catalyst.

What’s the fourth stage? Normalization. As in, a “new normal.” The statues and monuments are gone, the ball games are out, or at least you aren’t allowed in the stadium to watch them (and you’ve got to watch them on TV interspersed with commercial spots and in-game messaging pushing whatever memes and narratives the ESPNs and NBCs of the world and their Madison Avenue partners wish to implant in your mind), the schools have purged American history and culture, the Universal Basic Income checks have replaced your job, which you can’t do because the small business where you used to work has gone under thanks to the virus.

DC Circuit stayed writ of mandamus. Flynn fucked, again.

Typhuspad won’t let me stay signed in long enough to c&p a link to the order.

The finale:

But just to be sure, let’s make damned sure Biden and the Democrats take an historic beating in November. We don’t want to find out what’s behind the curtain in Biden’s basement. Too many nasty things are already peeking out at us from there.

Yep.

Ig: Taiwan "never required masks on people out of doors or even on public transportation" (yet few cases and few deaths)

I've read that Taiwan is quite steamy/humid and uncomfortable. Doubtless a breeding ground for mosquitoes.
I wonder if there is wide spread HCQ use there?

Great series, lyle!

Captain Hate

The cult of pieces always stays on offense too

Hagia Sophia must revert to its prior status as a mosque, a Turkish court ruled. The U.S. and Russia had pressed to keep it a museum.

Thanks lyle. I listened to anne- marie slaughter last week (she heads the new america F) and she was already referring to President B and his planned transformative agenda.

When we treat people, economies, cities, and society itself as 'human activity systems' that can be manipulated into new goals declared by government, we are entering into dangerous territory and that, unfortunately, is the Bipartisan push here and globally.

This morning I was working on a new big oil F report just released called "AI-1: Shaping Our Integrated Future" and it had Tim O'Reilly announcing that "we pretend that the market is a natural phenomenon best left alone, and we fail to hold its mechanism designers to account. We need to tear down and rebuild that machine, reprogramming it so that human flourishing, not corporate profit, becomes its goal."

That's Marxism pure and simple coming to the US and the globe. When an article like that one only uses the M word in the context of the Soviet Union and the Frankfurt School's plans we miss some of the other ways the M vision is coming at us.

If you want to get rid of teachers' unions and the terrible school system there is only one real solution;
abolish public schools.

That is EXACTLY what I want to happen. I'm with Team Shut Down Schools, Furlough Employees, Waive School Taxes, Reimburse State Money to Families.

I like my teacher friends, they're nice people with mostly good intentions. They are also clueless about everything UNLESS teaching is their second career. Those teachers are GEMS.
