i poked around a blm website and didn't find anything that could be considered a manifesto.

DrJ,

I am late answering because the stupid system logged me out. I wonder why typuspad does that!

I still smoke. Have since I was in high school. At one time all of us girls in my family (including my mom) smoked (and my dad and brother used Copenhagen snuff) but only my brother and I are left with the habit.

I smoke too. A *lot*. That has to change one of these days.

There is a tendency for people to think their era is uniquely bad or uniquely corrupt or their fellow citizens uniquely weak.
Sometimes they're right. Usually they're wrong.
Do you think the people were all the same all those other times but now they're different?

No. But the internet and social media and 24/7 news with no breaks or downtime ever amplifies all the worst traits of people, and accelerates the harm they can do. In that regard, things are worse now than in previous times of trouble.

Narciso

Indeed james d, its as if yeats had been looking at this world from 1919.

Iran Dismisses Leaked Details of Proposed China Deal

I'm curious about this proposed deal. Iran isn't bargaining from strength and I expect China will want to include their usual pitfalls.

Narciso

Well since they probably lost leverage in sudan with the new regime, they have to enmesh themselves with iran, then again isnt iran supplying maduro.

i would agree though that this is the most polarized time during my life and i'd never quite believe that both sides would believe the system as it is has failed (not dissimilar to the end of the weimer republic).

Thanks, rich!

evening jim. you made a comment a few nights back about the ice age and wanted to look it back up. was it an article you had flagged up?

i can do some more poking around but i'm in a grouchy mood and looking at that trash just makes me more grouchy.

Well, I drink too much, and so should not be posting - but! Smoking, that’s so old school. Yet I do enjoy a cigarette now and then. Never been a regular, but there’s something about cigs that’s very satisfying.

As usual I can not keep up. I read TK’s post about his anxiety in the hospital, and I really feel the need to post. I am so glad TK that you are ok, and clearly the increase in your posts is a good sign. But I read it, and I needed to share it with my husband. Certainly he has not been in your shoes, but he was told to stop working, use up vacation time, and then possibly go on unemployment back in March. He was spinning. And he kept it to himself, and lost weight due to stress and is now on high blood pressure meds. It was really hard on him, and I did not realize how hard it was for him. Being the comforting wife told him that “he just had anxiety and was not allowed to go to the hospital, because if he had covid” (which I was sure he did not have) my business could be closed for two weeks. He was just keeping it all in, and he never told me. He was worried that he was deprived of his position as provider. We do laugh about it now. He is a gem. And he’s working on talking more about his worries and eating better. So TK thanks for posting about your experience. It really helped me see.

As to everything else, it’s all nuts. Husband tells us that the local Catholic Bishop who told us that being non racist isn’t enough... now the same diocese is saying that we are open to new students in the Catholic schools. Hmm

i'm up to 2 packs a day. this covid coup has increased my intake by a extra pack.

but i remember a brief bit in the numbers when i was paying attention to those things that for some reason current smokers were not getting the commie cough as would be expected. my smoking co-worker must have seen the same thing because we were joking about doctors issuing scripts for 5 packs of cigarettes for 10 days as a treatment.

But the internet and social media and 24/7 news with no breaks or downtime ever amplifies all the worst traits of people, and accelerates the harm they can do. In that regard, things are worse now than in previous times of trouble.

This, about the Internet, was briefly mentioned in a thread at ace's and nobody wanted to pursue it much but if not for the internet I doubt that I'd know any of you guys. I mean never say never but it's difficult imagining a grouping like us conservatives in other types of settings, whatever they might be. I guess you could say it produces insular thinking on all sides but most of us are aware of bad things happening when some things are done so we're not like a bunch of theoretical eggheads. Mostly. But those on the left consider us doctrinaire goose steppers so...

Anyway I've learned more about music through the internet so there's that.

Cable news is just the continued bastardization of news into infotainment by not particularly intelligent people. Ailes at least had the sense to have it delivered by top shelf cooch which he pretty much admitted (not that it wasn't completely obvious).

Doctor Simone Gold was on Tucker’s show tonight.
She was fired from Hospital After Attending
'White Coat Summit'.

Not sure of the legalities--many employees have restrictions on what they can say in public, but it's hard to imagine doctors being restricted on speaking about medical matters. I wonder what kind of pressure was brought to bear on the hospital and by whom.

I repeat that she's hawt, but maybe needs to cut back on the caffeine just a tad.

rich,

I posted an article on a lake-bed study in one of the Carolinas that showed evidence of particles deposited from a supposed meteor strike 12,800 years ago. It was a new find that supports other similar finds elsewhere and that got me riffing about what we don't know about paleontology.

Smoking: it’s weird. Both my parents were 2-pack/day smokers. At one point my dad started smoking Laredo’s the homemade cigarette kit. I must have assembled a thousand of them. They stopped when dad got his hypertension diagnosis. All three grandparents smoked. All my uncles. Both my siblings smoke and still do.

Other than two packs when I was seventeen, I didn’t and don’t. Except for the occasional cigar, and that’s become even more occasional.

Captain Hate

it's hard to imagine doctors being restricted on speaking about medical matters.

I hate to say it but we've learned some really ugly things regarding freedoms we'd taken for granted here. It sounds alarmist to say that but we'd previously been led to believe that discussions of research and work experiences, subject to confidential proprietary information, are strongly encouraged.

sbwaters

I've said it before.

Smoking. Don't stop.

Just wait five minutes before having the next one. Then if you want it, have it.

Your cigs will get spaced out over time until you don't want anymore.

Stopping smoking is traumatic and when you face trauma you want a smoke.

My last cigarette under this regimen — 1984.

rich,

Here's the underlying theory. The "Clovis point" technology has no Asian analogue but does have a European one.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solutrean_hypothesis

This tends to down-play the theory, but I think it may eventually be proved.

Right now the arguments are that there isn't a definitive archaeological find in North America to prove this and there is no European DNA to be found in present-day Native Americans.

Some, including myself, wonder if that meteor from 12,800 years ago may have wiped out a small, fledgling European colony.

interesting. most researchers stop digging at about 13k years in north america so of course that is where the story ends. and no way would human remains fall outside of colvis first.

https://www.smithsonianmag.com/science-nature/jacques-cinq-mars-bluefish-caves-scientific-progress-180962410/

wonder why.

jim nj

Thanks rich,

I'm willing to let others fight it out for now.

Neither theory is well liked because both are not consistent with the prior theories that humans first arrived in NA 13,000 years ago and all the large mammals died shortly thereafter at the hand of the new arrivals.

So new studies suggest that Asians first came to the Americas as early as 35,000 years ago, which means there is a huge gap in our knowledge. Once the paleontologists had to acknowledge that, there is room for all kinds of possibilities, including taking another look at the "Clovis point" origins.
