Melinda. The owner of the company that the DNC had review its computers (The FBI never did review them.)is on record, at either the House or Senate SCI, stating that his company found no evidence that Russia did anything.
"Jenna McLaughlin @JennaMC_Laugh
Soo, if it's the same Peter Debbins (justice.gov/opa/pr/former-…) alleged to have spied for GRU, I totally saw him speak once in DC and remember it being SUPER weird and focused on Russia's messianic dream of cleansing the world when I was promised a cyber talk."
In 2009, I attended a veteran's lunch, where Kendall Myers was the guest speaker. I remember thinking at the time that there was something off about the way he talked about the USA and its policies. A few weeks later, the FBI arrested Myers and his wife, both charged with spying for Cuba for 30 years.
“ So now the average man in the street does not know what his natural rights are, what tools are at his disposal to protect them, nor does he even know what that tool is for and how he would use it.”
I guess I must be one of them. Armed uprising or costly law suits (big free rider problem there) aside, what tools do we have? What adds to the problem is that people like Cuomo are, bullies all, kicking small business when they’re already down. People who are struggling to survive aren’t in a position to mount legal battles or start mass movements.
MissM had posted a link with videos decribing the terrible morale our police are experiencing. I was just telling her about my sons low morale.
OL,
Although he attended public schools, the kid never saw a grade lower than A, k-12. That changed when he got to college, The students all refer to Saint Anselm as Saint C's, no one gets A's. Point being, he's a smart guy and could easily change course. He recently broke up with his girlfriend of 10 years, so there's really nothing holding him back. I keep telling him to go back to school.
>They protest in person against having to in person.
>The FBI framed innocent people, fabricated evidence, and defrauded federal courts to spy on their political foes because they did not vote for Hillary Clinton.
>The MSM covers real news ... with a pillow ... until it stops breathing.
>Democracy dies in darkness — Slogan of the Washington Post, creating darkness one article at a time.
Rocco, the other day I read an article online at the NH Union Leader. Apparently St. A's sent an email to all parents advising them that the students are expected to adhere to wearing masks, social distancing, etc. 7,000 posters were posted around campus reminding students of the rules. Apparently there have been *gatherings* of large groups on and off campus. I sent the article to the daughter. The administrators really think the students aren't going to party? The article cited UNC-Chapel Hill sending students home. BC has hired security details to monitor students Thursday-Saturday night. I believe peter has both sons at BC now?
This over at Althouse is excellent. Never heard of this guy but he is right on target:
"In a society that respects science, expertise confers power.... Illegitimate political power can be disguised as expertise...."
"In late February, [Italian philosopher Giorgio] Agamben began... to criticize the 'techno-medical despotism' that the Italian government was putting in place through quarantines and closings.... The emergency declared by public-health experts replaces the discredited narrative of 'national security experts' as a pretext for withdrawing rights and privacy from citizens. 'Biosecurity' now serves as a reason for governments to rule in terms of 'worst-case scenarios.' This means there is no level of cases or deaths below which locking down an entire nation of 60 million becomes unreasonable.
Laughter IS the best medicine, after all. (An old Reader's Digest feature that I used to read at my grandparents' house.)
The kids from the projects a couple of blocks away showed up again today looking for work. I paid them $6.00 to pull some weeds, water all of the potted flowers, cut dead stuff off of the flowers in the pots, and sweep the porch. They did a pretty good job and even cleaned up the mess.
I am trying to encourage work, since I assume they don't have much job for pay as examples and I don't want to encourage the idea that money is readily available. I also make it plain that I am not rolling in dough, and that I won't have any more cash until my pension check is deposited.
They are well-behaved but the oldest, a girl who is 12, is a real wheeler-dealer, so today I told them about my great-aunt Lola, that I remembered this morning when my daughter was asking me about western states and what I knew about them. Aunt Lola retired in Albuquerque because after she graduated from teachers' college (which is what the small university near us used to be) she went to teach at one of the government schools on the Navajo Reservation. That was in the early 1920's. I cannot even imagine how she gathered up the courage to go out there by herself.
Since we are having a quiet day hanging around the house, I am organizing my self for the fall. A total drag, but must be done. In the process of clearing all the paperwork off of the dining room table I find a few items I really have put off. First is an BCBS required survey for the one guy who has health insurance thru the store. I attempt to fill it out online. Site is down. I call and the line is out. Pfft, into the circular file it goes. Next up, personal medical bills for family. I try to call in or pay at an online site with my HSA credit card if possible. No online available for all. Offices are closed (and always seems to be no matter when I call - lunch time or a Friday). Anyway I decide to go thru UHC's HSA bank service. I swore years ago that I would stop using this service. Total pain in the arse!! Texts to verify adding a new payee, etc. Plus it's a very unfriendly user site.
Anyway, my point is that all the govt. intervention into health care has just about caused me to throw my lap top through the window, along with the phone. That can't be good for my health. It's done now, but took wayyyy tooo loongg! It's a perfect example of how all these "do-gooders" screw up everything they touch. I'm joining OL out on the ledge, with an early cocktail! Prganizing is much easier with a drink in hand (at least to start!).
Oh wait, last item is to download and print the application for my LTC!

Does ANYONE think this is by accident????????
Sorry Robin. Yahoo, ccgirl on your husband's good checkup. One of the side effects of the virus shutdowns is that online services are overwhelmed and understaffed and almost uniformly frustrating.
At least Zippy’s dad was actually AA. Neither of Cameltoe’s parents are and yet she’s being portrayed as “black.” How is this not insulting to real black people?
ccgirl, Today was my first weekend in a couple months where I wasn’t helping a friend move. (I’m now fit and energetic, after carrying too many heavy boxes and a week of ice packs on my back). Part of the move was “parking” some antique furniture at my place. As in fabricated in early 18th century England and shipped to the Pennsylvania Colony. Beautiful “old brown stuff” that didn’t fit in my friend’s new house. I spent the morning applying oil (1880s formula) to it all. Yes, total zen. Curious if you know about brass screws... three hinges are popped loose. I assume step one is rehydration of the wood via oiling. So no hurry, that can take a month or three. Where can you get replacement screws that might be a bit longer or fatter to tighten things back up? Is there a wood fill that can repair the receiving screw holes? These are 300-350 year old pieces, and I enjoy making them happy in my home.
Gus, I was listening to Trump's speech yesterday while stuck in traffic on way to hospital. I heard that very part. It wasn't a "tear" at all. He was very calmly laying out the case that this country will go down the toilet if the dems win. And what they are doing now regarding over 50 million mail in ballots is the start of it. He says it's going to be a mess. Again, all stated in a calm, measured tone.
Miss M, I figured you meant your daughter. And I hope the house plan works out. It a sounds like a good plan.
very sorry robin. hope you mend quickly and your family spoils you a bit. no advice to offer on the crutches, maybe just have a beer cooler next to the couch.
sorry to read that as well. has he thought of work private or corporate security. ten years, even if he's been unhappy, could be a good base for a private career.
Jane that's nonsense!!!!! If LEGS UP'S family had made their fortune from selling nEGRO'S, surely the MEDIA would have told us that. I mean they tore down statues of people who owned slaves.
i think this is my first weekend over the last couple of weeks where i haven't had to go into work. and a spot of good news at the salt mine is that a project that had been cancelled is now back on and should start spooling up in september.
Hi Henry, You have a lot of options, but if you want to re-use the old brass hinges I suggest you use the existing screws or replace them with new ones the same size. That way they will nest properly in the hinges. You can use any number of wood fillers, and if the hinge covers the holes then so much easier. Some fillers are harder than others, and without knowing how much weight or work the hinge will be taking on I suggest a lighter weight wood filler in not used much, and if more weight/activity then perhaps a two-part epoxy filler. Minwax, jb weld, etc. If the screws are small then you may get away with an expandable gorilla glue. But that's tricky with antiques as the glue can bubble up and then you need to sand.
My suggestion is if you can find a small hardware store, even an Ace or True Value they will give you the same advice, but as they can perhaps see the parts, even better advice.
If they are valuable antiques you may want to check with a dealer. Some repairs done incorrectly can cause a devaluation. If you're like me you are just glad it is done:-)
rich, my brother has all our family’s museum pieces. A carved mahogany elephant side table (single piece of wood), carved Philippine (Indonesian?) mahogany (perhaps cocobola) chests, 8’x10’ tapas cloths, rice paper water color scrolls painted by the Empress Dowager a couple centuries ago, and more. It’s great to be the conquering General in charge of reverting property to locals after WWII. I grew up in such a museum, I greatly appreciate my friend trusting me with his heritage.
>>>Its diameter is 0.002 km, or about 6.5 feet, according to NASA's data. It was first identified at Palomar Observatory in California in 2018.<<<
that isn't even a glass rattling kaboom, but greenland is coming out soon, and the central conflict in that movie is that experts missed a meteror shower by just a bit. by-and-by it is probably part of the taurids which has two peaks late october and early novermber for the primary and late june early july for the beta part.
Rocco, last night Tucker had on a ex-military guy who has written a book about how the regular person can defend themselves these days. (sorry I don't recall who he is). He stated that gun sales and requests for gun licences are skyrocketing, and that there will be plenty of qualified people to train newbies as many are leaving the military and the police forces. They are going into private security and fire arms safety and teaching. Personally, when I took my MA required safety class last week I spoke with a man who said it was his first day back in a year working at Cape Gun Works. They are busy. They went from one class a week to seven a week. Having said that, it's terribly hard to leave a job with benefits and a decent salary, especially if he has family. Just my unsolicited thought that there may be private options out there. Take care, and best to him.
Well this kind of procrastination is much better (not as good as a cocktail! No offense intended!)
Yikes Henry! That second link brought up a video with big ol' Joe Biden's face in it!
If the hinges are in good shape re-use them. It's very hard to shop for specific hinges having the same hole locations and such. There are a million different types and measurements. I cringe when people want me to match up old ones.
Should you need to replace the hinges, I recommend looking for an online hinge shop. Probably easier that way.
Bring one of each kind of hinge into the store, and you can find the proper flat head brass screw that will "nest" in the hole on the hinge. If the brass is bright, no worries, it will darken over time. You can also use an "oval" head screw. Both types are beveled on the underside of the head and so "nest" in what I am guessing is a beveled hole in the hinge. if not beveled then use a round head (flat on the underside of the head). This is much easier in person! No worries though!
Hope that helps. The secretary desk looks beautiful. Enjoy!
Of course while giving you advice I am sitting in an antique dining room chair with a cookbook over the hole in the caning (under a cushion). So maybe you don't want my advice- ha!
I kept one piece of family antiques with me when I moved: an American Gothic hand-carved walnut washstand with marble top, which came from my maternal great-grandparents' home in Corydon, IN and which my own grandfather refurbished with attention to detail. Everything else got farmed out to family members.
Nothing, however, dated from prior to 1840 or so. All of my relatives settled in the state after 1820, and came from Germany, France, or Scotland and were dirt-poor and farmed. Honestly, around here any 18th-century antiques mostly come from places like the Lilly or Ayres Estates and were donated to their respective museums.
I made squash puppies today. The recipe did not involve flattened juvenile canines, but did use shredded yellow squash, egg, corn meal, and various herbs and spices. They turned out quite nice; almost sort of like hash browns.
Yikes again, Henry. I went back to the video prepared for Joe, and this time it was Stacy A! Time for a cocktail pronto! The melodian is something I have never seen before.
Miss M, my mother acquired a lot of nice pieces and some interesting things. Some look great, but my guess is she bought items at a low price and refinished them. I am glad to have them, but I do laugh. These chairs, for example, she glued black rubber tips to the legs. I tried to remove and put proper tips on them, but so much work. One of these days! (She was a big believer in duct tape and phenoseal. I have a picture hanging
that I thought I would properly frame. Well it still has her angle brackets, plexiglass and caulking holding it together on the back-LOL). Too much work to take apart. It looks great hanging there.
I hate this shamdemic. If I hear one more teacher (really the union ones) bitch about being in danger I think I will start a counter protest with a sign saying, "Essential Retail Lives Matter! FU Teachers' Union. Go To Work!
Most teachers I know just want to work, and work in normal conditions. Also I missed the end " there. I give up on spelling, grammar, and punctuation on this site. And caps too!
My mother roomed with the first curator of John Herron Art Museum (later Indianapolis Museum of Art), one of those old maid professor types like my Aunt Lola.
The one family thing I have in my glass-door secretary, which I got at an auction, is a carved soapstone teapot that the lady brought over from China when she went with one of the American groups who visited the country when we first opened trade with them. THAT dates to the 18th century, according to what she told my mother, and has a silhouette like Aladdin's teapot with a rim trimmed with carved dogwood blossoms and a handle with a bird perched on top. I kept that for my daughter, since she graduated from the same art school that had been the original site of the museum.
MM, The latest I hear is the hurricanes are joining forces and headed for Louisiana. First time hurricanes have joined forces since the 30's. Pray for NO.
And Jane, I heard a man on the radio some time ago stating that all prostitutes are really just victims of the predatory market, which makes sense. I have to say that since then I have not considered hookers to be bad, but the people who have forced them into it, and those that enable them. (Sorry to be so serious). Just got really dark quickly here. Gotta go!

Representatives of the Post Office have repeatedly stated that they DO NOT NEED MONEY, and will not make changes. This is all another HOAX by the Democrats to give 25 Billion unneeded dollars for political purposes, without talking about the Universal Mail-In Ballot Scam....
....that they are trying to pull off in violation of everything that our Country stands for. Vote NO to the Pelosi/ Schumer money wasting HOAX which is taking place now. Then fight the $51 million unasked for Ballots. Only ABSENTEE BALLOTS are acceptable!

Rocco "...10 years in, not enough to get out and too much to start over."
Statistically, his life expectancy is probably for another 50-60 years of healthy living. Perhaps even more with new aging discoveries.
I'd call the first ten years water under the bridge and move on to something that gives him joy to do.
My two cents, unrequested.

ccgirl, Today was my first weekend in a couple months where I wasn’t helping a friend move.

Jane that's nonsense!!!!! If LEGS UP'S family had made their fortune from selling nEGRO'S, surely the MEDIA would have told us that. I mean they tore down statues of people who owned slaves.

My beer kid just arrived!!

A TRAIN MUSEUM RICH.
Posted by: GUS | August 22, 2020 at 03:56 PM
rich, my brother has all our family’s museum pieces.

Jeepers - you all get the typo thing!
No offense intended!)

ccgirl, thanks! The screws are long gone. Seems a two part epoxy filler would be best. One hinge is the fold down desktop of a walnut secretary desk. Similar to this one https://www.google.com/search?q=secretary+desk+with+bookcase&client=safari&hl=en-us&tbm=isch&source=iu&ictx=1&fir=pZb1GtDt0YFQ4M%252Cu1cgbOf-cXoMvM%252C_&vet=1&usg=AI4_-kTrPfhwvx7iV-d8llDNfNI_YSK7Pg&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwiorJThza_rAhVDBs0KHVVMBJwQ9QEwB3oECAQQMA&biw=1261&bih=1521&dpr=2#imgrc=pZb1GtDt0YFQ4M). The other hinges are a rosewood melodian (likely late 1800s, like this

Enjoy!

ccgirl,
I kept one piece of family antiques with me when I moved: an American Gothic hand-carved walnut washstand with marble top, which came from my maternal great-grandparents' home in Corydon, IN and which my own grandfather refurbished with attention to detail.

Seems like a good way to spread the infection might be a contaninated swab. Might even be a targeted weapon.

It looks great hanging there.

ccgirl,
My mother roomed with the first curator of John Herron Art Museum (later Indianapolis Museum of Art), one of those old maid professor types like my Aunt Lola.
