So electricity, cable and cell service is all disrupted in most of my town. I can get online intermittently from a secure remote location. The normal sounds of suburbia have been replaced by the roar of generators and chainsaws. First world problems!
Got a lot of rain, but my trees were pre-diastered so I was spared the rest.

Partly cloudy here and in the 70's. Amazing weather for the Midwest in August, when it's usually 90 degrees with 95% humidity.
The big news from the New York AG is that she has filed a lawsuit against the National Rifle Association, seeking to dissolve it for not using their money charitably.

Missed the discussion last night re the Beirut explosion. One of the video clips buried deep in one of the tweets was taken from a car on an elevated highway that I would estimate was about a mile or so from ground zero. They were obviously recording the initial column of fire. When the Big Bang happened, the shockwave was almost instantaneous, not ~5 seconds later. It shattered the glass and fired off the side airbag. Mach 5?
Posted by: Manuel Transmission | August 06, 2020 at 12:47 PM
It is hard not to see this as a political agenda in search of a legal rationale.
See the McCloskeys and many more examples going back to Tom DeLay, and this will be the rule going forward. Whether we like it or not, there's a war on, they no longer feel restrained, and they have enough judges to back them up.
Anyone not in good graces with the left needs to get out of leftist-run areas. It's surprising that the NRA is a NY entity. Let this be a warning to all other conservative organizations: get out of left-controlled areas now.

I don't doubt for a minute that should DJT not be elected president in November, this kind of harrassment will only ramp up. Is there any doubt that Dems would prosecute him and his family relentlessly for a myriad of charges until something sticks. GOPe will sit by idly and protect their six.

I opened Facebook to find a notice that they had removed a post that I had "Liked" because the WHO says it isn't true. I can't even remember the post or article, and of course since it's been deemed untrue by the WHO I'll never find out what it was that I'm not supposed to know. Imagine that happening in a free society.
Two key things: 1) the WHO with its less than stellar record determines what can be posted on Facebook; 2) This seems like a trial test. I expect that Facebook will increase the policing of its precious pages. COVID-19 has given these Internet gurus, broadcasting and government an interesting test case on how to manipulate the masses.

Update on dad-
I noticed his hands, fingers, and under his fingernails were deep purple yesterday. We are not supposed to touch the residents, but as I had mentioned I had taken stuffed pilot bear and a biplane and gotten permission to put the bear in his lap. Retrieving it was the perfect stealth way to check the temp of his hands. Cold.
He has also lost another 10 pounds in the last two weeks despite eating, which my mom doesn't understand. She does get that if I tell her it is called cachexia and happens in alzheimers as well as cancer and has been discussed all over the world, ESPECIALLY by at-home caregivers who are mystified as they know for sure what is being consumed that I can prove it.
I think she would rather blame the facility for not looking out for him than facing the inevitability of a process that cannot be stopped. I am sharing in case anyone else is in a similar situation during these lockdowns. We are lucky his facility has an outdoor covered patio where loved ones can be visited without anyone actually entering facility or residents leaving.
If anyone has any experience with timing after limbs start to go purple, even though the color drained after hospice massaged his hands. Mom thought it was a new development and it had been 2 weeks since I saw him and he said Hi to Pat the Bunny. Apparently though my brother noticed it last week and just didn't want to alarm my mom.

Much of my neighborhood is still without power. Some very large, very old trees got knocked down. I am not really sure what can be done to prevent disruptions, short of putting all power lines underground.

Facebook employees are worried about whether Trump would use the social network to invalidate the results of the 2020 presidential election. They want Zuckerberg to answer their question about it at today's all-hands meeting which is happening right now.
buzzfeednews.com/article/craigs…
Our story also outlines employee concerns that the co is giving preferential treatment to right-wing pages and publishers. In some cases, employees on internal forums said that Facebook's policy team got involved to reduce fact-check penalties. buzzfeednews.com/article/craigs…
Some examples. A FB employee found Joel Kaplan, the co's VP of public policy, personally flagged a fact check of a Charlie Kirk Instagram post for resolution.
In another case, a partner manager for PragerU argued the page should not be factchecked because it ran a lot of ads.
Zuckerberg is currently talking at the all-hands meeting right now about leaks.
"Part of that culture means we need to take a pretty heavy hand when people violate that trust," he says, threatening to fire leakers. He said someone was already fired for leaking this week.

I remember reading a few weeks ago that the dumbass green power MANDATES PG&E was forced to "invest" in not only caused our power to cost twice as much, or more, as neighboring states it also squeezed the maintenance budget until it was about a 30-1 ratio.
That's effin prog coercion all over; sky high rates, crappy service and product, perverse incentives, unintended consequences and even worse intended ones and terrible maintenance and in this case with deadly consequences. And when their choices to coerce the private sector blow up, they pretend they're the enforcers to protect the people from the greedy old capitalists and robber barons and murderers.
They always deliver the worst of all possible worlds and yet they sucker enough people to keep hanging around.
I'm thinking I may replace Edmund Burke, George Washington and Von Mises` as my political and economic role models and just advocate the Hulagu Khan route from now on.

I also have stopped reading Jalopnik, a website of goofy New York based car enthusiasts, because they accused the owner of another car buff website called Petrolicious, of being a racist. His crime? He posted on Facebook his opinion that BLM was a domestic terrorist organization. Petrolicious is a pretty cool site, so I haven't missed Jalopnik at all. However, I learned that the Petrolicious founder is now a victim of cancel culture and was forced to sell the website. You can read about it here.

The funny thing is the NRA is by almost all standards the most conciliatory and least junkyard doggy of the 2nd amendment orgs.
If that dingbat NY AG did succeed in dissolving the NRA she would like even less what would fill the vacuum.
In fact, not a few of the other orgs and gunowners agree with her criticism that it largely exists as a lavish club for the fossils inhabiting its upper echelons. That's what led to the Cincinnati revolt in the 70s, but eventually the new boss met the old boss in the mirror.

The yards are full of logs this summer,so the lack of paper products should ease up. :) PPE takes priority over Lysol/Clorox wipes, that shortage might continue. I'm not sure Moochelle has been to the Vineyard altho the daughters have. My friend is determined to meet them for cocktails - he's their next door neighbor and as conservative as me, but much nicer and a big CEO. he'a been there every weekend, but hasn't seen them yet. But "next door neighbor" is pretty far apart.

Top Democrats contemplate civil war if Biden loses
I know we had already discussed this a bit, but does anyone think they're just kidding?

In my LeMay days as an officer in SAC, I know exactly how the military would react in that situation. 7 Days in May would be eclipsed to One day in January.

--It's like they're all afraid of the mob.--
They are so much at the mercy of the state mob of regulators and mandates and rate setters that they are only nominally quasi-private. They have no choice.
That's a lot more of an excuse than silicon valley and most other woke private enterprises who do it voluntarily.
Nominally quasi private is right. The good news is you get a mostly captive market. The bad news is everything else.

"does anyone think they're just kidding?"
IMO their fantasy of revenge for losing the 1st civil war.

Big Mike told the NPR hack that she's been having "low grade depression".
Wonder if she's been tested for low-T?

Ig, thanks for the comment about case peaks etc.
Before the surge, I was very good at dismissing the whole thing as a nothing burger except for the well know risk groups. As others said "Very serious for some; not at all for virtually everybody else".
That line was gathering steam, so all of a sudden it was drowned about my Oh NO...cases are skyrocketing.
If my previous conclusion that it is a nothing burger (except for those groups), then I continue to say "So F*king What?" Until it burns as far though the population as it will, this will not end. So let it burn, baby.

Well now this is an interesting little bit of history:
CDC Director Robert Redfield: the letter that should have destroyed his career
Long before Robert Redfield ascended to the CDC directorship, and also assumed a key post on the White House COVID Task Force, he was a US Army researcher working on an AIDS vaccine.
He ran into a great deal of trouble. His career was almost derailed. The Army finally saved him, through what some investigators assert was a complete whitewash.

Ext "...‘In that scenario, California, Oregon, and Washington then threatened to secede from the United States if Mr Trump took office as planned.’..."
Sounds like Br'er Rabbit and the Brier Patch to me.

The money quote::
"“We are writing to request that your Subcommittee hold a hearing, as soon as possible, to investigate charges of grave impropriety committed by U.S. Department of Defense’ AIDS researchers. We have obtained Internal memoranda, not previously made public, from the Department of Defense that allege a systematic pattern of data manipulation, inappropriate statistical analyses and misleading data presentation by Army researchers in an apparent attempt to promote the usefulness of the GP160 AIDS vaccine…The Phase I and Phase II studies in which this alleged misconduct occurred were conducted by researchers at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR), led by Lt. Col. Robert Redfield, M.D., Chief of the Department of Retroviral Research, and misleading results from these trials were reported in…the New England Journal of Medicine in June 1991, the Journal AIDS Research and Human Retroviruses in June 1992 and the annual International AIDS Conference in Amsterdam in July 1992. In addition, overstated conclusions have been presented on two occasions at hearings before your Subcommittee."

A little deep into the body’s biochemistry but worth a read. We’re being lied to. BIG TIME.

does anyone think they're just kidding?
They can bluster all they want before the election. That’s First Amendment latitude.
Now, after Democrats losing the election, such conversation would have a different meaning and be treated a different way.
