I guess its similar over here, the teachers union found a hawaiian judge and the state wide school reopening falls to each county.

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-storm-laura/louisiana-avoided-lauras-wall-of-water-not-so-says-forecaster-idUSKBN25O29R

"The highest surge hit about 15 miles east of where Laura was forecast to make landfall but it “wobbled” at the last moment. That slight change likely saved the city of Lake Charles, said Jamie Rhome, head of the storm surge team at the National Hurricane Center (NHC)."

"Fresh data on Friday from an Army Corps of Engineer gauge 15 miles east indicates that the storm surge was right at the 15- to 20-feet forecast that was Rhome’s highest in his 20-year career, he said."

Yes Jim, I was there a couple of weeks ago and the Trump support was visible.

The Dem mayor endorsements in MN-8 (which Pete Stauber flipped to R in 2018 after it had been held by Democrats for approximately ever) suggest that the surge of Trump support in MN already exists. The endorsements are a reaction to it.

So, if it exists in MN-8 it exists all over the state. The only question is, will it be big enough?

Well, Trump and Biden are now tied in the latest MN poll.

Here's the MN polling for 2016:
https://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/2016/president/mn/minnesota_trump_vs_clinton-5591.html

Note Trump was +3 in one early RV poll and tied in one late LV poll. But otherwise it was all Clinton by at least 5 points and sometimes by double digits.

When Trump went to MN for a last minute rally in early November 2016, the MSM laughed at him. "MN a swing state? Ridiculous," they said.

Yet Trump ended up losing the state by only ~45K votes.

Pence was in Duluth today btw.

I wasn’t planning on posting, but TK dragged me in. I have no idea why Charlie Baker called in the NG last night. First I am hearing about it, and I like to think I am up to date. I have a few thoughts, and certainly all could be wrong.

1. As much as I hate to say it he somehow manages to stay ahead of the curve. When he shut things down here and the numbers improved I almost thought he knew what he was doing. (Whatt!.). Well, he pretty much blew it after that.

2. His new State Police Colonel is someone I know. I used to work with his wife, and we text on occasion. Recently she said that she’s a “big fan of CP, and he works so hard behind the scenes.” I respect her husband, and maybe he has his ear. Just a guess. (By the way I replied that I did not care for CP, but it’s okay to have differing opinions.)

3. He is not a compete idiot. I loathe the man, but if he heard the rioters want to mess with Boston, he’s ready to fight.

I first posted here late night on Good Friday. I wrote about how weird things were in my town as I waited to pick up seafood takeout. It was all so bizarre and a bit scary back then.

Tonight I picked up takeout from the same place. It was a bit strange still as things are not normal here yet. But on the way out I had to ask a man to excuse me so I could walk out. He had on a Trump mask. Told him I liked it, and caught his eye. He thanked me. Weird world we live in these days.

I’m out. I can’t fight about whether he is good or bad if he is bringing in the NG. Personally I am glad. And he probs got himself into this situation. Blah, blah.

Somewhat related articles.

https://www.cnbc.com/2020/08/27/25percent-of-us-malls-are-set-to-shut-within-5-years-what-comes-next.html

https://www.multihousingnews.com/post/s-hekemian-group-lands-116m-loan-for-new-jersey-project/

The second article is about the redevelopment of the old Mercedes USA headquarters. They have moved, or are moving to Atlanta.

There was a long-term trend of companies opening up large corporate headquarters campuses in NJ. NJ, becoming business-unfriendly some time ago, or due to takeovers, has led to many headquarters moving elsewhere or closing. It's hard to find such large packages of land in NJ so they are ripe for new residential redevelopment.

As to what happens to older retail malls, they continually re-invent themselves or they go under. I've seen that in my area. The Hackensack-Paramus corridors of RTE 4 & 17 host 4 regional malls only a couple of miles from each other.

The last mall to be built was The Shops at Riverside, in Hackensack, they opened up with the upscale market in mind. Lord & Taylor was their anchor, with smaller luxury name brand stores and typical mall food. When Lord & Taylor closed they rebuilt its old space into a new cinema, high-end restaurants and more shops suitable for the upscale retailers.

The two original malls in Paramus started out as open air malls. Both enclosed and re-built over the years. The Bergen Mall ran into difficulties after its two anchor stores closed. Sterns went defunct and Bambergers was bought by Macys, which already had a store at the Garden State plaza, only a mile away. The two Macys co-existed for a while, but as the Bergen Mall started going downhill Macys pulled the plug there.

New owners came up with a new name and a new concept and The Outlets at Bergen Town Center was born. If you're a bargain shopper you shop there now.

Garden State Plaza has always been the premier mall in north Jersey. It has re-built itself in several major renovations over the years always getting larger. The last renovation added an entertainment wing with a multi-screen cinema and several restaurants.

The Paramus Park mall lost two anchor stores. They reconfigured one into smaller shops and a cinema. The other they used to lure Stew Leonards, a well-respected NY high-end grocer, to open their first NJ store.

The best malls are going to feel like a downtown and what do you normally find in a downtown, but people. And what else do people need - housing.

The Garden State Plaza has submitted plans to build high-end high-rise housing on surplus parking spaces.

I almost forgot the fifth smallest mall The Fashion Center in Paramus. It's always been an also-ran. They went the supermarket route too when they had an anchor closed. They brought in Midway, another respected NY grocer, in 2009, even before the Paramus Plaza went the supermarket route.

Midway, alas, was bought out with too much debt, over-expanded and went public in an IPO. In 2016 they went Chapter 11, found a new owner, and did Chapter 11 again this year. The Fashion Center still lists it as a tenant, but I presume it's dead now.

This started out intending to be a short comment and then I decided to fact-check against my memory. Sorry about the length.

Narciso

Good persoective the big local mall declared bankruptcy this week, others oemed ths same company have not yet.

cathyf

jim -- in the city closest to me, the mall has been completely dead for a couple of years. There were 4 anchor stores. The JC Penney's has been taken over by a warehouse bargains place that sells overstock construction materials, furniture, etc. The K-Mart has been taken over as a U-Haul store, with a storage facility. Everything else is empty and derelict. The parking lot looks like it's been under mortar fire...

The next closest city is in Iowa, and their mall still has a couple of stores. The parking lot looks like a war zone, too.

It's always amazing to me when we go to Chicago or South Bend and see bustling retail. It's like there's money there, LOL!

jim nj

deBlasio snark

https://nyc.streetsblog.org/2020/08/28/mayors-motorcade-parks-in-queens-bike-lane-so-mayor-can-make-ferry-announcement/

jim nj

Narciso, cathyf, yes, your perspectives will differ.

Hudson Yards, a mega-billion mall and associated properties in NYC closed only a few months after it opened due to the Covid-19 lockdown. At least one of the anchors has since gone bankrupt and won't reopen.

American Dream in the NJ Meadowlands was all set for a soft open after decades of development when the Covid-19 lockdown closed it just before it opened. Over half of it was geared to entertainment with an indoor water park and downhill ski run among other amenities.

I've seen photos of abandoned malls that are just sitting there in smaller markets. Photographers sneak in to take semi-spooky pictures. If they haven't been demolished it's because no one has come up with an idea of how to use the land that would justify the cost of demolishing the buildings.

Then you have the in-between malls. Too old, too small, not enough purchasing power in the community, that won't have an opportunity to re-invent themselves. They'll move further and further down-scale until they too are abandoned.

This was going to happen anyway. Now it will just happen a lot faster.

Narciso

Oh yes i remember that one, it had the spiral skeleton.

narciso,

You almost got me to say yes, that's right, then wait a minute.

https://www.hudsonyardsnewyork.com/discover/vessel

"The extraordinary centerpiece of Hudson Yards is its spiral staircase, a soaring new landmark meant to be climbed. This interactive artwork was imagined by Thomas Heatherwick and Heatherwick Studio as a focal point where people can enjoy new perspectives of the city and one another from different heights, angles and vantage points.

Comprised of 154 intricately interconnecting flights of stairs -- almost 2,500 individual steps and 80 landings -- the vertical climb offers remarkable views of the city, the river and beyond."

and

https://www.thespiralny.com/home/

"The Spiral, developed by Tishman Speyer and designed by architectural firm Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG), is an instantly recognizable addition to the New York City skyline.

THE SPIRAL’s unique design features classic Manhattan step-backs that twist and taper towards the sky, allowing light and air to reach the streets below, and provides lush outdoor terrace space to tenants on every tower floor.

THE SPIRAL represents the future of connected workspace for industry leaders."

So, yeah, it has spirals galore, but it didn't start out as the skeleton it has become.

jim nj

Thank you Porch, I think Kenosha does matter to a lot of people that could ignore Seattle, Portland, Chicago, LA, NYC, Minneapolis and other large cities that had riots. It just doesn't look organic anymore.

In a liberal blue city with stringent gun laws it might seem to be a grassroots thing for a spontaneous demonstration to arise.

More power to them for being woke. The riots and looting that followed were astro-turfed.

They deliberately overwhelmed the ability of the local police to respond effectively to the after-protests.

The concept of a party and then an after-party is not lost on me living minutes from NYC. We could close a bar in NJ and venture into NYC for a bar or pop-up site that didn't obey the rules.

If doing so, you had to be cognizant that the rules changed.

Moving an astro-turfed riot to an open-carry state was a mistake. The rules changed.

That people sought to try to intimidate armed people shows that some people didn't understand the new rules.

That a 17 year-old became a target suggests to me that somebody went after what they thought was someone who could be intimidated. Meaning that I think someone was deliberately looking for what they thought was a weak target.

Take this person out and the resistance might crumble.

I mean why wasn't someone older, who might have been a former Marine, not targeted. Someone who might have instinctively used his rifle butt to ward off an attack.

I withheld judgement the night this happened. I wanted more information. I've seen the videos since. I've decided. This 17 year-old was tested beyond his normal expectations and should not face charges.

Pinandpuller

I think what really got Jerry Falwell Jr in trouble was his eisegesis of “Harpazo”.

Pinandpuller

I don’t know if it’s been raised, jim, but Kyle borrowed his rifle from a friend in Wisconsin, so it never crossed state lines.

I’m amazed at how conscientious leftists are about borders and boundaries now. I’m sure Door Dash doesn’t allow their drivers to cross state lines like that.

jim nj

Hi Pin,

I saw that. It removed the possibility of a federal crime. No firearm crossed over state lines in the commission of the "crime."

Much of what we are hearing is "spin." Blake's lawyers say he didn't resist arrest. He didn't fight back. With no police bodycam videos it's going to be a contest of how many perjurers can we find.

Sound familiar?

cathyf

Given the amount of video, it’s hard to believe that a bunch of perjurers could come up with stories consistent with the video and with each other.

Salena's story strikes me as a "water is wet" reflection.

The Kenosha riots could matter re: election?

How about this lawlessness in Kenosha WILL DETERMINE the outcome?

I know two months (til early voting starts) is a long time, but Kenosha is the kind of thing that allows you to make up your mind, and stop having to pay attention to the noise and ads if you are one of those mysterious "undecided" voters.
Especially if you live in what you thought was a sleepy, safe suburban area or small town.

I posted a few tidbits from the close of POTUS's Night Four remarks on the inside door of my back porch bathroom. One being:

1000 blacks were murdered in four D run cities last year.

The other:

The ten most violent cities in this country are D run.

There are two totally separate legal actions going on here. The first is the criminal defense, where Lin Wood has recruited the best criminal defense lawyer he knows. The second is the defamation suit against the media for printing things like “white supremicist” and “unarmed”— that’s the one Lin Wood is doing for contingency.
