To be honest, while I haven't read it carefully, I am skeptical, though these guys are top tier economists. My take is that lockdowns at least have a temporary effect, but no cumulative effect. They can delay and flatten the curve, but ultimately the virus is going to spread until there's herd immunity. And, as I like to say (to paraphrase a quote attributed to Keynes), the virus can be viral longer than we can remain solvent.
The Dems' goal is to keep down the recovery and have flatten the curve so it goes beyond November 4th. Two birds with one stone.
In nonpolitical news, MrsJ and I harvested, crushed, and destemmed our grapes this morning. The small, hand-cranked crusher/destemmer we bought recently worked really well!
The crop looks great! Huge clusters, and the fruit tastes superb. Our favorite vine, Jerry Garcia, gave 24 clusters by himself. He is so named, because he was the 13th of the original vines, and was not trellised to start with. He just kept on truckin' along, and is our most productive vine.
I've not done the testing yet, which you are supposed to do prior to harvest, but the bird indicator was positive (they eat only when the grapes are ripe). I'll spend the afternoon with the testing. I have a chemistry lab, and I may as well do something useful with it!
Necessary adjustments then will be made (pH, sugar, sterilizer, and so forth).
It is hard to tell how much finished wine we'll get out of this, but I'd guess about 20 bottles. I'm also correcting some processing issues I've had since the beginning, and hope to reverse my adage that "it is easy to make wine. It is hard to make good wine."
The harvest shows that we are getting older. I am very sore from cleaning and sterilizing all the vessels yesterday, and operating the crusher today. MrsJ nearly passed out and had to eat.
All in all, though, it was successful. There's no smoke flavor, and the fruit looks good. That's all I ask for at this point.
Why is it when I go to put in a load of laundry and maybe some other housework and I return, I feel like I missed some important stuff in the meantime?

Portland’s mayor and Oregon’s governor have been deplorable in the ongoing crisis gripping the city. The chaos continues nightly. If they can’t control their streets and keep their citizens safe from agitators and anarchists, then call in the National Guard. This has to stop now.
Not my prediction, but his. In my opinion, 1984 seems more likely, so we will see.
I know of no other candidate who ever has had the number of fan clubs, people who have started web sites, theme songs, art work, clothing, podcasts, etc. It's amazing to me.

As NYC Mayor, I didn’t blame crime on Clinton. If I did, the NYT would have said I was a failed leader.
I think the backlash against the Left is building. The Kenosha shooting was after a known felon resisted arrest. Tough shit, known felon. Clean up the mess vigorously and if necessary violently after the election. It sounds like there are some DOJ elements that are tracking these clowns. Post election, my feeling is they will try to slink away back to wherever they came from. Rounding them up in onesies and fivesies and quietly breaking them into giving up the whole organization is the way to go.
This is ALL about the election.
Until then, shoot straight, know the law, and keep your lawyer on speed dial.

Ted Wheeler, the wacky Radical Left Do Nothing Democrat Mayor of Portland, who has watched great death and destruction of his City during his tenure, thinks this lawless situation should go on forever. Wrong! Portland will never recover with a fool for a Mayor....
....He tried mixing with the Agitators and Anarchists and they mocked him. He would like to blame me and the Federal Government for going in, but he hasn’t seen anything yet. We have only been there with a small group to defend our U.S. Courthouse, because he couldn’t do it....
..The people of Portland, like all other cities & parts of our great Country, want Law & Order. The Radical Left Democrat Mayors, like the dummy running Portland, or the guy right now in his basement unwilling to lead or even speak out against crime, will never be able to do it!
That said, Biden's "seeking conflict" statement looks a lot like victim blaming. He should be attacked from the left, like this: Are women walking down urban streets in short skirts "seeking rape"?
I was in western Kenosha County the past two days. I have location services off, but my phone still got the Kenosha “7 pm curfew in effect” and “ shut off all gas pumps” warnings on my phone.
Saw lots of Illinois license plates, lots of cops, and zero Biden signs.
First autumn-like day here with temps around 78F. But most importantly, finally cleared out the smoke. I credit C&E coming through town. Tata until later. Cheers.
For those interested, we (census enumerators) weren't trained until July for a census based on April 1st. Then, we didn't go into the field for a few more weeks. Finally, everything was "You have to get it done right now! We have to turn everything in to Washington of Friday!" So we hurried, and often found that the location had filled out the info online, or another census person had been there. We also got help from the Chicago region late in the game. They seemed to be more hindrance than help.
We are paid by the hour (and not a lot, but I'm retired and did it mostly to avoid boredom), but we also are paid the government rate of $.58 per mile. I drive an older car, which was paid off long ago, and it costs me about $.07 per mile for gas, and nearly nothing for oil, repairs, etc. I think I make nearly as much in mileage as in salary. This past week, we had 20 people on a conference call. Each of us reported on our progress over the week. We were paid for the time on the call. Each person took just a few minutes, but we each got paid for a couple of hours for being on the call, just listening to stuff that didn't concern us. We could have each called in separately, or they could have called each of us, and saved the government almost 40 hours of pay overall.
We aren't done yet. I was doing group quarters (as opposed to knocking on doors), and will be doing transitory locations this week. It looks like another goat roping.
I'm not complaining about the work. It's interesting. It's just the standard bureaucratic mess that gets to me. There are some very good and very sharp who are working for the census bureau, but there are also a lot of pretty much useless drones. As I said, normal for government work.
If the peaceful rioters are becoming a negative for the Dems, they can just sit back and wait for the public to read that Trump's cousin says his sister doesn't admire him very much. Last Sunday, Chris Wallace led with this compelling topic when interviewing Mark Meadows, so you know it's big! Bigger than Omarosa's book, or Michael Woolf's! It's 11th on the Amazon best-seller list, which currently boasts 4 children's books in its Top Ten....they've got Trump now!
Oh no! The Dems don’t want Trump to visit Kenosha! Just because he got Evers to accept several thousand NG from out of state to stop the burning, looting, and mobs that Evers and the alt Gov egged on. Enjoy the recall you two pussies. The R party isn’t playing, but you will see grass roots will not put up with your crap. (Tweet is a Urinal Central aka Gannett turd)

i now almost feel bad. i gave the census worker who was pestering me a really hard time.
i kept the control number from when i filled out the census online but she persisted until i started accusing her of running a scam to get personal information.
Remember when the TV show "Cops" use to feature the Sheriff of Multonomah County (Portland) tracking down the bad guys. Today the bad guys are now in charge and he would be riding out of town on a rail, tarred and feathered.
It's very interesting: The dems are getting more and more aggressive, and the repubs are getting more and more strong. They don't need to fight back against the pussies, they just need to act like patriotic adults. It's very nice to see.
I got a census visit at the lake, and she was kind of a babe, too. I was just off the boat and wasn’t in the mood to mess with it, so she gave me the card with the numbers and said if I didn’t fill it out online then she’d be back.
And I hope y’all know how difficult it was for me - especially since ‘off the boat’ is synonymous with well-lubricated - not to tell her that I’d be nekkid and ready, but I behaved...
Anyhoo, I didn’t fill it online, of course, and I missed her second visit. She left behind another form in the door but I didn’t read either, of course.
I'm not so sure it's wise to sit on our hands for fear of jeopardizing public opinion. What happens if Trump loses? Then do we defend ourselves? Won't that appear to be a bunch of sore losers refusing to accept the results of an election?
i have to agree on this rocco. the trump supporters had every right to have a rally and had every right not to be pestered by fascists.
although, i'm thinking 'not accepting the results' is baked into the cake at this point. maryland is going to have an amazing 100% response rate and go for (player to be named later) by 25 points. places in pa and mi are going to have 100%+ turnout.
A situation so perfectly Trumpian that it could have been created just for him.
But I hope Trump supporters in the area stay home when he visits. The last thing we need is MSM replaying videos of Trump folks clashing with BLM/Antifa.
the trump supporters had every right to have a rally and had every right not to be pestered by fascists.
Absolutely. But they are trying to bait us into a violent response which they would then use to crush us. Communist takeover 101. It's not fair and it's not right, but I still don't want to hand them any ammunition two months from the election.
And so it begins

Soylent at 4:56, exactly.

"right wing" ... humm someone minding his own business got gunned down for no other reason than he was wearing a patriots prayer hat and something that was considered 'back the blue'.
and the shitheads in portland dribbled down their shirts muh orangeman.
got it.
for 90+ days terrorists can run roughshod over civil society in portland because their violence is speech but when portland's civil society gets tired of being bullied it is violence.

i now almost feel bad. i gave the census worker who was pestering me a really hard time.
i kept the control number from when i filled out the census online but she persisted until i started accusing her of running a scam to get personal information.

the soros da is even worse.
this all goes back to the end of the cold war and not having a truth commission of all the traitors and terrorists.
we won. we should have rounded up our enemies here.

Remember when the TV show "Cops" use to feature the Sheriff of Multonomah County (Portland) tracking down the bad guys. Today the bad guys are now in charge and he would be riding out of town on a rail, tarred and feathered.
How times change.

Change my mind.

i have to agree on this rocco. the trump supporters had every right to have a rally and had every right not to be pestered by fascists.
although, i'm thinking 'not accepting the results' is baked into the cake at this point. maryland is going to have an amazing 100% response rate and go for (player to be named later) by 25 points. places in pa and mi are going to have 100%+ turnout.
Posted by: rich | August 30, 2020 at 06:54 PM
Wow, Evers sounds desperate.
A situation so perfectly Trumpian that it could have been created just for him.
But I hope Trump supporters in the area stay home when he visits. The last thing we need is MSM replaying videos of Trump folks clashing with BLM/Antifa.

Absolutely. But they are trying to bait us into a violent response which they would then use to crush us. Communist takeover 101. It's not fair and it's not right, but I still don't want to hand them any ammunition two months from the election.
