Rhetorical question: So why is it a crime to lie to a bank? Is it a crime to lie to, say, a car dealer? Or a Landlord? Or to X,Y, or Z?

If a tenant lies to me and that damages me, then I can sue him in civil court if I can make the case. If somebody lies to me on a leasing application, I assume that is why I do Due Diligence before I accept the claims as fact.

If all of a sudden such lies become crimes and I can send them to jail, then why should I work so hard checking out the claims?

Maybe the banks should be more careful before risking the money of others?
