A participant in the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine trial has developed a dire inflammatory disease which can be a result of infection, or, er, things that mimic infection, such as vaccines.
The program is on pause pending a safety review. Obviously they are not un-vaccinating anyone, but no new patients will get jabbed. And since the protocol (in the US anyway) calls for two vaccinations 4 weeks apart, a long safety pause will disrupt that timing for those awaiting their second shot.
Derek Lowe has more.

All these quantum questions seem like the reverse of the shortcomings of Newtonian physics.
Newtonian physics work quite well at the normal, physical, non subatomic level. Because of that it was tried desperately to fit it to the subatomic world.
Now that the quantum world is better understood the same bonehead mistake is being made in reverse by trying to imply or even prove that quantum uncertainties therefore apply to trees falling in the woods, actual cats not just theoretical ones and free will and reality itself.
It's one of those ideas one has to have a PhD to be stupid enough to believe.

He names the names and says what the President should order Secretary of Defense Mark Esper to do if Esper doesn't do it himself.

--Ig may disagree but these dueling headlines are powerful.--
First, studies are ambiguous on whether beetle killed trees are actually worse or better as far as promoting wildfires. Intuitively you would think they would be better at promoting wildfire but after the first year they lose their needles which are one of the prime ways fires spread as they are launched into the air ahead of the fire. The old dead wood does burn intensely hot [that's why that pic of the Creek Fire I posted looked like an A-bomb] in a way a living tree does not so overall it is probably a bit of a wash.
Second, there is no market for those dead trees and no market for even green ones in significant enough numbers to make much difference.
It's not that different policies won't in the end work. But it took decades of inattention and most importantly intense fire suppression to get to where we are.
Consequently it will take decades of expensive attention to logging, thinning, clearing and prescribed burning and sorry to say, large wildfires to retame the monster that has been created.
As an instance of how the large wildfires are helping, the El Dorado fire in Riverside county is bound on its southeast edge because it has run into the Apple fire from earlier this year.
And right now in the county to the north of mine, to the west of Tahoe, a fire that started yesterday is burning into the fire scar from the King fire from about 5 years ago, so its potential to grow is greatly reduced.

1. Indoor restaurant dining will finally come back on 9/30, in time for cooler weather (though too late for thousands of failed businesses).

2. The hotels-turned-homeless-shelters near us will cease being homeless shelters by the end of the month. Rumor has it that bigshot attorney Randy Mastro (hired by a local citizens group) threatened to expose the corrupt sweetheart deal DeBlasio made with the hotel owner (just coincidentally a big financier of DeBlasio's campaigns).

Now I’m watching Biden. He’s reading well, but the stuff he’s saying is mind blowing. He said before the pandemic, Trump was the worst jobs President in history. ‘He rewards people who send jobs overseas” and on and on. The only applause was about 4 people who clapped when he praised Gov Whitmore ( is that her name?). Repeating the Atlantic lies. Now praising what a great job he and Obama did on the economy. Does he think everyone slept thru the last 4 years?
